[목회서신] 가치 있는 것에 투자하는 지혜 | The Wisdom of Investing in What is Valuable

“투자(投資)란 이익을 얻기 위해 어떤 일이나 사업에 자본을 대거나 시간이나 정성을 쏟는 것.”이라고 사전은 알려 줍니다. 투자와 투기는 다릅니다. 투자는 장기적인 안목을 가지고 시도하는 것입니다. 투기(投機)는 근시안적입니다. 투자하는 사람은 투자하기 전에 연구하고 분석합니다. 반면에 투기하는 사람은 연구하거나 분석하지 않습니다. 투자하는 사람은 냉철한 분석과 분별력을 갖기 위해 노력합니다. 반면에 투기하는 사람은 충동적이며 감정적입니다. 투자하는 사람은 투자하는 과정에서 치러야 할 대가를 정확히 알고 있습니다. 반면에 투기하는 사람은 치러야 할 대가나 과정에는 관심이 없습니다. 오직 자신의 이익만 생각합니다. 투자하는 사람은 투자하는 대상에 관심이 있습니다. 반면에 투기하는 사람은 투자하는 대상에 관심이 없고 오직 돈에만 관심이 있습니다. 훌륭한 투자가는 가치를 중요하게 생각합니다. 반면에 투기하는 사람은 가치에는 관심이 없습니다.

우리는 하나님의 말씀을 통해 투자하는 지혜를 배울 수 있습니다. 또한 지혜로운 스승들을 통해 투자하는 지혜를 배울 수 있습니다. 짧은 글 속에 투자의 지혜를 모두 담을 수 없지만 소중하게 생각하는 투자의 지혜를 몇 가지 나누고 싶습니다.

첫째, 사람에게 투자하는 것이 지혜입니다. 하나님은 우리 영혼을 구원하기 위해 독생자를 투자하셨습니다. 정말 값진 투자입니다. 하나님은 사람을 구원하고, 사람을 키우고, 사람을 남기는 일에 투자하십니다. 사람을 키우는 길은 교육입니다. 교육에 투자할 때 사람을 키우고, 남길 수 있습니다. 하나님은 교육을 소중히 여기십니다. 예수님도 제자들을 선택하고 그들을 교육을 통해 훌륭한 인물로 키우고 남기셨습니다. 저는 교육에 관심이 많습니다. 그래서 교육에 투자하고, 성도님들이 평생학습자로 성장할 수 있도록 도서관을 준비하고 있습니다.

하나님이 생각하시는 교육은 머리만 키우는 교육이 아닙니다. 하나님이 생각하시는 교육은 지, 정, 의가 조화를 이루는 것입니다. 지식과 지혜와 성품이 조화를 이루는 것입니다. 머리가 없는 가슴, 가슴이 없는 머리는 모두 위험한 것입니다. 하나님의 관심은 우리의 지성과 감성과 영성이 조화를 이루는 것입니다. 예수님이 성장하시는 모습을 보십시오. “예수는 지혜와 키가 자라가며 하나님과 사람에게 더욱 사랑스러워 가시더라”(눅 2:52).

둘째, 하나님의 말씀에 투자하는 것이 지혜입니다. 하나님이 우리에게 원하시는 것은 말씀 충만입니다(골 3:16). 그 이유는 하나님이 성경 속에 하나님의 뜻, 하나님의 지식, 하나님의 지혜, 하나님의 능력, 하나님의 성품, 하나님의 복의 원리를 담아 두셨기 때문입니다. 성경을 읽고, 듣고, 지키는 자가 복이 있습니다(계 1:3).

“성경이 만든 사람”이라고 알려진 사람이 있습니다. 존 워너메이커입니다. 그는 공교육을 별로 받지 못했지만 성경을 통해 배운 지식과 지혜로 성공한 인물입니다. 존 워너메이커는 그의 생애 가장 성공적인 투자는 10살 때 2달러 75센티를 주고 성경을 구입한 것이라고 말합니다. 기자가 “그렇다면 성경만 구입하면 성공할 수 있나요?”라고 그에게 물었습니다. 워너메이커는 다음과 같이 짧게 대답했습니다. “그렇지 않습니다. 먼저 하나님을 믿고, 말씀을 실천해야 합니다. 하나님을 신뢰하고 즐겁고 기쁘게 일하다 보면 성공은 어느새 우리 곁에 다가와 있게 됩니다.”

셋째, 좋은 만남을 가꾸는 일에 투자하는 것이 지혜입니다. 하나님은 만남을 통해 축복하십니다. 좋은 스승, 좋은 친구, 그리고 성경과 함께 좋은 책을 만나는 것이 축복입니다. 좋은 만남을 가꾸기 위해서는 겸손해야 합니다. 교만하면 배우지 못합니다. 서로를 존중해야 합니다. 존중은 상대방의 가치를 인정하는 것입니다. 우리는 사랑하고 존경하는 대상을 통해 가장 많이 배웁니다. 누군가를 비판하면서 그 사람에게서 배울 수는 없습니다.

지혜자를 만나 지혜를 배우는 것은 축복입니다. 탈무드는 “지혜자를 초대하지 않는 식탁에서는 하나님의 복을 받을 수 없다.”라고 말합니다. 워런 버핏과의 점심 식사 자리가 1,900만 불에 낙찰된 적이 있습니다. 그의 지혜를 듣기 위해 엄청난 투자를 한 것입니다. 또한 버핏은 점심자리 경매에서 받은 돈을 자선단체에 기부합니다.

우리의 시간과 건강과 물질과 에너지는 유한합니다. 그래서 가치 있는 일에 투자할 줄 알아야 합니다. 전도와 봉사와 선교와 구제에 투자하는 것이 가치 있는 일입니다. 자신이 꾸준히 성장할 수 있도록 평생학습에 투자하는 것이 가치 있는 일입니다. 성도들을 그리스도의 제자로 키우기 위해 교육하고 훈련하는 것이 가치 있는 일입니다. 자녀 교육에 투자하는 것이 가치 있는 일입니다. 말씀을 암송하고 묵상하고 연구하고 실천하기 위해 투자하는 것이 가치 있는 일입니다. 좋은 만남을 가꾸는 일에 투자하는 것이 가치 있는 일입니다. 아름다운 성품을 형성하는 것이 가치 있는 일입니다. 영원한 하나님의 나라와 주님의 교회를 위해 투자하는 것이 가치 있는 일입니다. 가치 있는 일에 투자하는 지혜를 통해 하나님의 큰 상을 받으시길 빕니다.

The Wisdom of Investing in What is Valuable

The dictionary defines "investment" as "the act of providing capital for a business or project to gain profit, or devoting time and effort to something." However, investment and speculation are different. Investment involves a long-term perspective, while speculation is short-term and often short-sighted. Investors conduct thorough research and analysis before committing their resources, whereas speculators do not. Investors strive for rational analysis and discernment, whereas speculators tend to be impulsive and emotional. Investors understand the costs and processes involved, while speculators are primarily concerned with their own profit. Investors care about what they invest in, while speculators are only interested in money. Excellent investors prioritize value, while speculators are indifferent to it.

We can gain wisdom about investing through God's Word and wise teachers. Although a brief essay cannot encompass all the wisdom of investing, I would like to share a few valuable insights.

First, it is wise to invest in people. God invested His only begotten Son to save our souls. It was a precious investment. God invests in saving, nurturing, and appointing people. The way to nurture people is through education. By investing in education, we can develop and appoint individuals. God places a high value on education. After choosing His disciples, Jesus nurtured and educated them, ultimately appointing them to become great leaders. I am deeply interested in education. That is why I am investing in education and preparing a library to support lifelong learning for our congregation.

God's view of education goes beyond intellectual development. It includes the harmonious growth of intellect, emotion, and will. It involves the balance of knowledge, wisdom, and character. An intellect without a heart, or a heart without intellect, is dangerous. God's interest lies in the harmonious development of our intellect, emotions, and spirituality. Consider how Jesus grew: “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52).

Second, it is wise to invest in God's Word. God desires us to be filled with His Word (Colossians 3:16) because the Bible contains His will, knowledge, wisdom, power, character, and principles of blessing. Blessed are those who read, hear, and keep the Word (Revelation 1:3).

John Wanamaker, often referred to as a "man made by the Bible," is a prime example. Despite limited formal education, he achieved success through the knowledge and wisdom gained from the Bible. Wanamaker once said that his most successful investment was buying a Bible for $2.75 when he was ten years old. When a reporter asked him, “Can one succeed just by buying a Bible?” he replied succinctly, "No. First, you must believe in God and practice His Word. If you trust in God and work joyfully, then success will eventually come to you.“

Third, it is wise to invest in cultivating good relationships. God blesses us through encounters. Meeting wise teachers, good friends, and enriching books, alongside the Bible, is a blessing. Cultivating good relationships requires humility. Arrogance hinders growth and learning. We must honor one another. Honoring others means acknowledging their value. We learn the most from those we love and respect. We cannot learn from those we are criticizing.

Meeting wise people and learning from them is a blessing. The Talmud says, “A table without wise guests cannot receive God's blessing.” Once, the auction of a private lunch with Warren Buffett resulted in a bid of $19 million. This astonishing investment was made to gain insights from Buffett’s wisdom. Furthermore, Buffett donated the proceeds from the auction to charity.

Our time, health, material possessions, and energy are finite. Therefore, we must know how to invest in what is valuable. Investing in evangelism, service, missions, and giving to the needy is valuable. Investing in lifelong learning for continuous personal growth is valuable. Educating and training believers to be raised as disciples of Christ is valuable. Investing in children’s education is valuable. Investing in memorizing, meditating on, studying, and practicing the Word is valuable. Investing in cultivating good relationships is valuable. Forming a beautiful character is valuable. Investing in God's eternal kingdom and the Lord's church is valuable. May you receive great rewards from God through the wisdom of investing in what is valuable.
