[목회서신] 거목(巨木)은 흔들려도 고목(枯木)은 흔들리지 않는다! | Even if the Giant Tree Shakes, the Old Tree Does Not Shake!

거목(巨木)은 크지만 살아 있기에 바람에 흔들립니다. 하지만 고목(枯木), 즉 오래된 나무 중에 말라서 죽어버린 나무는 바람에 흔들리지 않습니다. 살아 있다는 것은 흔들린다는 것입니다. 흔들리지 않는다면 죽은 것입니다. 거목이 흔들리면서도 쓰러지지 않은 까닭은 뿌리를 깊이 내린 까닭입니다. 나무의 중심은 뿌리입니다. 나무는 흔들리면서 거듭 중심을 잡고, 그 중심인 뿌리를 땅속 깊이 내리게 됩니다. 뿌리를 깊이 내린 거목은 거센 바람에 흔들릴지언정 견고히 서 있습니다. 하지만 거목이 생을 마감하면서 고목(枯木)으로 바뀌면 더 이상 흔들리지 않습니다. 고목은 어느 순간 거센 바람이 불면 부러지거나 쓰러질 뿐입니다.

거목은 큰 인물을 상징합니다. 큰 인물도 거센 바람이 불면 흔들립니다. 겉으로 보기에 고요해 보이지만 사실 내면은 흔들립니다. 다만 큰 인물은 오랜 풍파 중에 흔들리는 마음을 잘 다스리는 법을 터득한 사람입니다. 오랜 세월 동안 거센 폭풍우와 폭염을 통과하면서 뿌리를 깊이 내리는 법을 터득한 사람입니다. 오랜 세월 동안 거센 인생의 시련이 그를 흔들 때마다 거듭 중심을 다잡고 성장을 거듭한 사람입니다.

크고 굵은 나무라고 늘 편하고 좋은 것은 아닙니다. 거목은 좋은 햇빛만 받는 것이 아닙니다. 타는 듯한 폭염과 땅에서 멀어질수록 심해지는 건조함을 견뎌내야 합니다. 또한 태풍 같은 위기가 올 때마다 가장 먼저, 그리고 가장 많이 노출됩니다. 가장 먼저 흔들리고 가장 마지막까지 부대낍니다. “가지 많은 나무는 바람 잘 날이 없다.”는 옛말이 있습니다. 이 말의 뜻은 자식을 많이 둔 어버이에게는 근심이 끊일 날이 없음을 비유로 한 말입니다. 가끔 저를 아끼는 성도님들이 제가 인용한 옛말을 하시면서 위로한 분들이 있습니다. 크고 많다는 것이 언제나 좋은 것만은 아닙니다.

우리는 나무를 통해 많은 것을 배울 수 있습니다. 강판권 교수는 “나무는 오로지 살아남기 위해서 치열하게 살아갈 뿐이다.”라고 말했습니다. 저는 나이가 들면서 살아간다는 것이 얼마나 소중한 것인지를 생각합니다. 살아간다는 것이 얼마나 힘든지도 생각합니다. 또한 살아가고 살아낸다는 것이 참으로 위대하다는 생각을 합니다. 그래서 제가 만나는 모든 사람이 위대해 보입니다.

거목이 된다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 모두 거목이 될 수 없습니다. 또한 모두 거목이 될 필요도 없습니다. 모든 나무가 소중하듯이 모든 사람은 그 나름대로 아름답습니다. 다만 우리는 나무를 통해 조급증을 내려놓고 오래 기다리는 법을 배워야 합니다. 나무는 서서히 자랍니다. 나무가 하루아침에 자라는 법은 없습니다. 어느 순간에 빨리 자라는 듯이 보이는 대나무도 사실은 오랜 세월 동안 깊이 뿌리를 내린 후에 자라는 것입니다.

제가 자주 인용한 중국의 대나무 가운데 모소라는 대나무가 있습니다. 중국 극동지방에서만 자라는 희귀종인 모소대나무는 씨앗에서 싹이 트고 농부가 정성을 들여도 4년간 고작 3cm밖에 자라지 못한다고 합니다. 하지만 이 대나무는 5년째 되는 날부터 하루에 무려 30cm가 넘게 자라기 시작합니다. 그렇게 6주 만에 15m 이상 자라게 되고 주변은 빽빽하고 울창한 대나무 숲이 됩니다. 울창한 대나무 숲을 이루기 위해서는 땅속에서 오랫동안 뿌리를 내리는 인고의 세월을 견뎌야 합니다.

속도가 중요한 시대에 기다림을 강조하고, 느림의 미학을 찬미하는 제가 어리석게 보일지 모릅니다. 하지만 하나님의 원리는 변하지 않습니다. 자연의 원리와 생명의 원리는 변하지 않습니다. 하나님의 원리를 거스르며 과속하는 것들은 엄청난 비극을 언젠가는 초래하게 됩니다. 고통이 없는 인생을 꿈꾸지 마십시오. 고통을 인정하십시오. 피할 수 없는 고통이라면 환영하십시오. 고통을 선용하십시오. 신비롭게도 하나님의 축복은 고통을 통해 풍성하게 임합니다. 위대한 작품은 하루아침에 탄생하지 않습니다. 또한 쉽게 탄생하지 않습니다. 거쳐야 할 모든 과정을 거치고, 치러야 할 충분한 대가를 치른 후에 위대한 작품은 완성됩니다.

나무 가운데 가장 소중한 나무가 있습니다. 나무 십자가입니다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들이십니다. 그런데 나무 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으실 때 흔들리셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 거절당하시고, 버림받으시고, 배신당하시고 모욕을 당하셨습니다. 하지만 예수님은 십자가에서 내려오지 않으시고 우리를 위해 죽으시고 부활하셨습니다. 나무 십자가에 부활의 꽃이 피었습니다. 부활의 열매가 맺었습니다. 흔들리지 않은 나무는 없습니다. 흔들리지 않은 인생은 없습니다. 예수님도 십자가에서 흔들리셨습니다. 하지만 예수님의 중심이 하나님 아버지께 깊이 뿌리내린 까닭에 끝까지 사명을 완수하셨습니다. 그래서 우리는 날마다 예수님의 나무 십자가 아래로 나아갑니다. 그곳에서 안식하고, 생명을 얻습니다. 하나님의 사랑을 공급받습니다. 제가 나무를 통해 배우고 깨달은 교훈이 도움이 되셨으면 합니다.

Even if the Giant Tree Shakes, the Old Tree Does Not Shake!

The giant tree(巨木) is big but sways in the wind because it is alive. However, the old tree (枯木), specifically dried and dead trees amongst the old trees, do not shake in the wind. To be alive is to be shaken. If it doesn't shake, it's dead. The giant tree does not fall even when shaken because its roots are deeply rooted. The heart of a tree is its root. As trees sway, they hold their center again and again, and their roots, which are the center, go deep into the ground. A giant tree with deep roots stands firm despite being shaken by strong winds. However, when a giant tree dies and turns into an old tree, it no longer shakes. An old tree is only broken or knocked down by a strong wind that may blow at any moment.

A giant tree symbolizes a great person. Even a great person sways when strong winds blow. He looks quiet on the outside, but in fact, he is shaken on the inside. However, a great person knows how to manage a wavering mind well, during the storms of life. He learns how to grow his roots down deeply going through years of raging storms and heat waves. He is a person who has refocused and grown over the years whenever the harsh trials of life shook him.

A big and thick tree is not always comfortable and good. Giant trees don't just get good sunlight but it must endure scorching heat and dryness that gets worse the farther it is from the ground. Also, whenever a crisis like a typhoon comes, it is the first to get wet and is most exposed. It is the first to shake and the last to suffer. There is an adage saying, “A tree with many branches has an unceasing windy day.” This adage is a metaphor about how parents with many children never cease to worry. Sometimes there are people who care about me and comfort me by saying the old saying I quoted. Bigger and more is not always better.

We can learn a lot from trees. Professor Kang Pan-kwon said, “Trees only live fiercely to survive.” As I get older, I think about how precious it is to live. I think about how difficult it is to live. Also, I think about how it's so great to be alive and to be surviving. So, everyone I meet looks like they are doing great things.

Being a giant tree is not an easy task. Not everyone can be a giant tree and not everyone needs to be a giant tree. Just as every tree is precious, every person is beautiful in their own way. It's just that we must learn how to put aside our impatience and learn to wait through the imagery of trees. Trees grow slowly. Trees don't grow overnight. Bamboo, which seems to grow quickly, actually grows after being deeply rooted for many years.

Among the Chinese bamboos I often talk about, there is a specific kind of bamboo called Moso. It is said that the Moso bamboo, a rare species that only grows in the Far East of China, sprouts from a seed and grows only 3 cm (1.2 in) in 4 years even if the farmer works hard. However, from the 5th year onwards, this bamboo tree starts to grow more than 30 cm (1 ft) per day. In just six weeks, it grows more than 15 m (50 ft) tall, and the surrounding area becomes a dense bamboo forest. In order to grow a dense bamboo forest, it is necessary to persevere and endure the years of growing one’s roots underground.

In an era where speed matters, it may seem foolish to emphasize waiting and praising the aesthetics of slowness. But God's principles do not change. The principles of nature and life do not change. Speeding things that go against God's principles will one day lead to great tragedy. Don't dream of a life without pain. Acknowledge the pain. If the pain is unavoidable, welcome it. Use the pain for good. Mysteriously, God's blessings come abundantly through suffering. Great works don't happen overnight. It also doesn't come easily. A masterpiece is completed after all the necessary processes have been passed and the sufficient price to be paid has been paid.

Among all the trees, there is a tree that is most precious. It is the wooden cross. Jesus is the Son of God. But he was shaken when he was nailed to the wooden cross and died. Jesus was rejected, abandoned, betrayed and insulted on the cross. But Jesus did not come down from the cross but died and rose again for us. The flower of resurrection bloomed on the wooden cross. The fruit of resurrection was produced. There is no tree that is not shaken. There is no life that is not shaken. Even Jesus was shaken on the cross. However, because Jesus' center was deeply rooted in the Heavenly Father, he completed his mission to the end. So, we see ourselves go under the wooden cross of Jesus every day. We can rest there and gain life. We can receive God's love. I hope the lessons I have learned and realized through trees will be helpful to you all.
