“거미줄이 모이면 사자도 묶을 수 있다”라는 말은 에티오피아 속담입니다. 거미와 사자는 비교의 대상이 아닙니다. 거미는 작고 사자는 거대합니다. 거미는 약하고 사자는 강합니다. 거미의 무기는 거미줄입니다. 반면에 사자의 무기는 무서운 이빨입니다. 사자는 30개의 이빨을 가지고 있습니다. 그 중 네 개의 큰 송곳니는 먹이를 죽이는데 사용합니다. 그런데 에티오피아 속담은 거미줄이 모여 사자를 묶을 수 있다고 말합니다.

속담(俗談) 속에는 깊은 뜻이 담겨 있습니다. 속담이란 오랫동안 민간에 전해 내려온 쉬운 격언이나 잠언을 의미합니다. 속담은 잠언처럼 놀라운 교훈이 담겨 있습니다. 에티오피아 속담에는 에티오피아 사람들의 지혜가 담겨 있습니다. 속담 속에 담긴 지혜는 오랜 세월이 흐르면서 농축된 지혜입니다. 속담은 하루아침에 생겨나는 것이 아닙니다. 속담은 오랜 세월을 거쳐 구전으로 전해 내려온 것입니다. 속담이란 우리를 생각하게 만듭니다. 교훈과 지혜를 선물해 줍니다. 속담은 우리를 움직여 실천하게 만듭니다. 제가 에티오피아 속담을 통해 배운 지혜를 나누고 싶습니다.

첫째, 작은 것 속에 담긴 무한한 잠재력을 보게 만드는 지혜입니다. 사람들은 작은 것을 작다고 생각합니다. 작은 것을 하찮게 여깁니다. 하지만 하나님은 작은 것 속에 무한한 잠재력을 담아 두셨습니다. 거미는 작습니다. 하지만 거미에게는 무한한 잠재력이 있습니다. 예수님을 만난 후로 성경을 통해 배운 것은 작은 것 속에 담긴 무한한 잠재력입니다. 작은 겨자씨 속에 담긴 무한한 잠재력을 배웠습니다. 도토리 한 알 속에 거대한 참나무가 담긴 것을 배웠습니다. 작은 것이 작은 것이 결코 아닙니다. 작은 것을 소중히 여기는 사람이 지혜로운 사람입니다.

둘째, 작지만 자신이 가진 것의 소중함을 아는 것이 지혜입니다. 거미가 가진 것은 거미줄입니다. 거미는 거미줄을 가지고 집을 짓습니다. 거미줄은 아주 작습니다. 때로는 잘 보이지 않습니다. 하지만 거미는 거미줄을 통해 집을 짓고 그 안에 거합니다. 또한 거미줄에 걸려드는 작은 벌레를 잡아먹습니다. 하나님은 우리가 갖지 않은 것을 요구하시는 분이 결코 아닙니다. 하나님은 우리에게 이미 주신 것을 가지고 무엇을 했으며 어떻게 했느냐에 관심을 갖고 계십니다. 남이 가진 것이 중요한 것이 아니라 내가 이미 가지고 있는 것이 소중한 것입니다.

셋째, 작지만 반복해서 실행하는 지혜입니다. 우리가 배우는 것은 앎을 위해서입니다. 하지만 배운 것을 실천하기 전까지는 진정으로 아는 것이 아닙니다. 배움이, 앎이 되기 위해서는 배운 것을 반복해서 실천해야 합니다. 진리란 실천을 통해 경험되는 지혜입니다. 거미가 큰 사자를 거미줄로 묶기까지 수없는 반복의 과정을 거쳤을 것입니다. 진짜 거미줄로 사자를 묶었느냐고 제게 따지시면 곤란합니다, 속담과 잠언 속에는 비유와 은유가 함께 담겨 있습니다. 영감과 통찰을 주는 시와 명언과 글들은 비유와 은유가 함축된 예술임을 기억해야 합니다.

저는 반복의 능력을 믿는 사람입니다. 인생 승리는 단순한 행위를 누가 오랫동안 반복하느냐에 따라 결정됩니다. 오랫동안 반복하기 위해서는 지루함을 견뎌야 합니다. 때로는 사람들의 비웃음을 견뎌야 합니다. 노아가 120년에 걸쳐 방주를 만들었을 때 지루함과 사람들의 비웃음을 견뎌야 했습니다. 최진석 교수는 “반복해야 넓어지고, 차이가 생긴다. 깨달음이란 묘한 경지는 누가 단순한 행위를 오랫동안 반복하느냐로 결정된다.”라고 말합니다.

“칠전팔기(七顚八起)”라는 말이 거미를 통해 유래했다는 사실을 아시는지요? 칠전팔기란 일곱 번 실패해도 다시 일어나 여덟 번째로 도전한다는 뜻입니다. 오래전 한 전투에서 패해 쫓긴 장수가 작은 굴에 숨었습니다. 간신히 비집고 앉은 굴 입구에 거미 하나가 줄을 쳤습니다. 장수는 신세를 한탄하며 거미줄을 계속 흩어버렸습니다. 거미줄을 일곱 번이나 흩어 버렸는데 거미는 묵묵히 여덟 번째 거미줄을 쳤습니다.

그 때 갑자기 적병의 수색대가 굴 입구에 들이닥쳤습니다. 장수는 꼼짝없이 죽었다 싶어 몸을 납작 엎드린 채 숨을 죽이고 있었습니다. 노련한 적군 병사 하나가 굴 입구로 다가와 거미줄로 입구가 막힌 것을 보았습니다. 거미줄을 본 적군 병사는 아무도 안에 들어가지 않았을 것이라 확신했습니다. 수색할 필요가 없다고 생각해서 동료들을 이끌고 돌아섰습니다. 거미 덕분에 목숨을 건진 장수는 거미를 통해 배운 불굴의 정신으로 다시 재기해 큰 공을 세웠다고 합니다.

반복해서 도전하십시오. 반복해서 배우고, 배운 것을 실천하십시오. 변화를 경험하려면 멈추지 않고 반복해야 합니다. 물론 때로 잠시 쉴 수 있습니다. 잠시 멈출 수 있습니다. 하지만 계속 멈추면 안 됩니다. 멈추면 끝입니다. 딱 거기까지입니다. 저는 잠시 멈출 때가 있지만 계속 전진합니다. 계속 배웁니다. 계속 행동합니다. 계속 기도합니다. 계속 글을 씁니다. 지금은 나이 탓을 할 수가 없습니다. 105세의 나이에도 계속 강의를 하시고 글을 쓰시는 김형석 교수님을 보십시오. 이제 나이는 숫자에 불과합니다. 날마다 새롭게 배우고, 새롭게 변화를 시도하십시오. 반복해서 실천하십시오. 놀라운 변화와 진보를 경험하게 되실 것입니다.

If Spider Webs Unite, They Can Tie Up a Lion.

The saying, "If spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion" is an Ethiopian adage. Spiders and lions are not comparable. Spiders are small, and lions are enormous. Spiders are weak, and lions are strong. The spider's weapon is its web, whereas the lion's weapon is its fearsome teeth. Lions have thirty teeth. Four of which are large canines used to kill their prey. However, the Ethiopian adage suggests that spider webs, united, can unite to tie up a lion.

Adages contain deep meaning. They are simple maxims or proverbs passed down through generations. Like the Proverbs of the Bible, adages contain astonishing lessons. Ethiopian adage contains the wisdom of the Ethiopian people. The wisdom found in adages is the concentrated wisdom accumulated over many years. Adages are not created overnight but instead are handed down orally over time. Adages make us think. They give us gifts of lessons and wisdom. Adages inspire us to take action. I would like to share the wisdom I have learned through the Ethiopian adage.

First, it is the wisdom that allows us to see the infinite potential in small things. People think small things are insignificant. They regard small things as trivial. However, God has placed immense potential within small things. Spiders are small, but they possess infinite potential. Since I met Jesus, I have learned from the Bible about the tremendous potential in small things. I have learned about the infinite potential contained in a tiny mustard seed. I have learned that a giant oak tree grows from a single acorn. Small things are never just small things. A wise person values small things

Second, wisdom lies in recognizing the value of what you have, no matter how small. A spider has its web, which it uses to build its home. The web may be tiny and hard to see, but it allows the spider to create a place to live and catch small insects to eat. God never asks for what we don't have. Instead, He cares about what we do with what He has given us. It's not about what others have; it’s about appreciating and valuing what we already possess.

Third, it is wise to repeatedly practice even the small things. We learn to gain knowledge. However, until we put what we've learned into practice, we don't truly know it. For learning to become true knowledge, we must repeatedly apply what we've learned. Truth is wisdom experienced through practice. A spider likely underwent countless repetitions to be able to tie up a lion with its web. If you ask if a spider actually can tie up a lion with its web, you’re missing the point. Adages and Proverbs often use parables and metaphors. Remember that inspiring and insightful poems, quotes, and writings are art forms rich with parables and metaphors.

I believe in the power of repetition. Success in life is determined by who can perform simple actions consistently over a long period. To persist in something for a long time, you must endure boredom and sometimes the ridicule of others. When Noah built the ark for over 120 years, he had to endure both boredom and mockery. Professor Jin-seok Choi said, "Repetition broadens and creates differences. The profound state of enlightenment is determined by who can repeat simple actions for the longest time."

Did you know that the phrase 'Fall down seven times, get up on the eighth (七顚八起)' originated from a spider? It means to rise again for the eighth time even after failing seven times. In an old battle, a defeated general sought refuge in a small cave. As he sat desperately at the entrance, a spider spun a web. The general, in frustration, kept tearing apart the web. Despite tearing it apart seven times, the spider silently spun its web for the eighth time.

Just then, an enemy scouting party unexpectedly stumbled upon the cave's entrance. The general, fearing he'd be discovered, lay perfectly still, barely daring to breathe. An adroit enemy soldier approached the cave entrance and saw it blocked by spider webs. Convinced that no one could have entered inside, he decided there was no need to search further and led his comrades away. Thanks to the spider, the general's life was spared, and he drew upon the unwavering resilience he learned from the spider to rise again and achieve significant success.

Keep challenging yourself again and again. Learn through repetition, and then put what you've learned into action. To experience change, you must keep repeating without stopping. Of course, you can take a break occasionally. You can pause for a moment. But you must not stop altogether. Because if you stop, it's over. That's it. I sometimes pause briefly, but I keep moving forward. I keep learning. I keep practicing. I keep praying. I keep writing. Now, age cannot be an excuse. Look at Professor Kim Hyung-seok, who at 105 years old continues to teach and write. Age is just a number now. Learn something new every day and try new changes. Keep practicing repeatedly. You will experience remarkable transformations and progress.
