[목회서신] 날마다 가꾸고 싶은 7가지 마음 | Seven Kinds of Hearts I Want to Cultivate Every Day

   마음은 정원과 같습니다. 날마다 정성스럽게 가꾸지 않으면 어느새 잡초로 가득 차게 됩니다. 정원에는 반드시 정원사가 있습니다. 정원사가 없는 정원은 황폐합니다. 정원사가 하는 일은 날마다 정원을 돌보는 일입니다. 우리 모두는 마음의 정원을 가꾸는 정원사입니다. 마음을 잘 지키고 가꾸는 것이 지혜입니다. “모든 지킬 만한 것 중에 더욱 네 마음을 지키라 생명의 근원이 이에서 남이니라”(잠 4:23). 제가 지키고 가꾸고 싶은 7가지 마음이 있습니다.

첫째, 초심(初心)입니다. 초심은 처음 마음입니다. 초심의 경험은 하나님이 우리를 부르실 때 경험했던 감동과 떨림의 경험입니다. 초심은 순수한 마음입니다. 초심은 하나님과의 첫사랑입니다. 하나님은 우리가 초심을 품고 살기를 원하십니다. 예수님이 에베소교회를 향해 하신 말씀을 들어 보십시오. “그러나 너를 책망할 것이 있나니 너의 처음 사랑을 버렸느니라”(계 2:4). 초심을 잘 가꾸기 위해서는 겸손해야 합니다. 교만이 깃들면 초심이 사라집니다. 초심이 사라지면 마음이 무디어집니다. 따뜻하고 부드러운 마음이 냉담한 마음이 됩니다. 초심은 사명에 머무는 마음입니다. 초심은 거듭 하나님께로 돌아가서 생수의 원천에 머무는 것입니다. 초심은 회복할 수 있는 마음입니다. 참된 영성은 초심을 끝까지 품는 것입니다. 초심을 잃는 순간 길을 잃지만, 초심을 회복하는 순간 다시 길이 열립니다.

둘째, 항상심(恒常心)입니다. 항상심은 한결같은 마음입니다. 항상심은 예수님의 성품을 닮는 능력입니다. “예수 그리스도는 어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 동일하시니라”(히 13:8). 항상심은 흔들리지 않는 마음의 중심입니다. 항상심은 일관성입니다. 항상심은 성실성입니다. 성실성은 신뢰를 낳습니다. 항상심은 상황과 감정에 흔들리지 않고 내면의 균형을 지키는 마음입니다. 세상은 변하지만 중심을 잃지 않는 자는 끝까지 승리합니다.

셋째, 진심(眞心)입니다. 진심은 숨김 없고 꾸밈 없는 진실한 마음입니다. 진심은 사람이 느낄 수 있는 가장 깊은 신뢰의 언어입니다. 말은 속일 수 있지만 진심은 속일 수 없습니다. 진심은 관계의 근본입니다. 신뢰는 진심에서 시작됩니다. 진심은 하나님 앞에서 중심의 진실함입니다. “보소서 주께서는 중심이 진실함을 원하시오니 내게 지혜를 은밀히 가르치시리이다”(시 51:6). 어거스틴은 “진심은 사람을 감동시킬 뿐 아니라 하나님을 기쁘시게 한다.”라고 말했습니다.

넷째, 전심(全心)입니다. 전심은 나뉘지 않은 마음입니다. 하나님을 향한 한 마음입니다. 하나님은 두 마음을 품는 것을 싫어하십니다. 전심은 마음을 다해 하나님께 헌신하는 자세입니다. 전심은 하나님께 드리는 온전한 헌신입니다. 하나님은 자기를 전심으로 찾는 자를 만나 주십니다. “너희가 전심으로 나를 찾고 찾으면 나를 만나리라”(렘 29:13). 전심은 열정이 아니라 방향입니다. 전심은 하나님을 향한 마음입니다. 전심으로 살아가는 사람은 흔들려도 방향을 잃지 않습니다. 어거스틴은 “하나님은 많은 것을 요구하지 않으신다. 다만 전심을 원하신다.”라고 말했습니다.

다섯째, 충심(忠心)입니다. 충심은 충성을 낳습니다. 충성(忠誠)이란 마음 중심에 말씀을 품고, 그 말씀을 성취하는 것입니다. 충심은 관계와 사명을 지켜 내는 영혼의 무게입니다. 충심이란 마음이 중심을 벗어나지 않는 상태입니다. 충심은 큰 일보다 작은 일에 충실함으로 드러납니다. 충심은 조용하고 깊고 묵직합니다. 사람은 겉으로 드러나는 화려함에 감탄합니다. 반면에 하나님은 작은 자리에서 묵묵히 충성하는 사람을 기뻐하십니다(마 25:21). 충심을 품은 사람은 작은 일에 충성하고, 맡겨진 일에 충성합니다. 또한 맡겨진 일에 끝까지 충성합니다. D. L. 무디는 “진정한 충성은 아무도 보지 않을 때 드러난다.”라고 말했습니다.

여섯째, 향상심(向上心)입니다. 항상심(恒常心)과 향상심(向上心)은 함께 동행합니다. 향상심은 지향성과 방향성을 드러내는 마음입니다. 향상심은 상승, 성장, 향상을 상징하는 매우 적극적이고 긍정적인 마음입니다. 향상심은 더 성장하려는 마음입니다. 향상심은 더 발전하려는 마음입니다. 향상심은 현재에 안주하지 않고 자신을 끊임없이 계발하려는 마음입니다. 향상심은 성장의 동력입니다. 성숙의 조건입니다. 향상심은 겸손과 배우는 자세에서 출발합니다. 향상심은 성공보다 성숙을 추구하는 태도입니다. 영적으로는 예수님을 더 닮아가기 원하는 내적 열망입니다. 저는 날마다 배우고, 날마다 새로워지고, 날마다 성장하길 원합니다. 제임스 클리어는 “꾸준한 작은 향상이 인생을 바꾼다”라고 말합니다. 진정한 자기 사랑은 향상심에 있습니다. 아리스토텔레스는 “향상심은 자기를 사랑하는 가장 지혜로운 방식이다”라고 말했습니다.

일곱째, 뒷심입니다. 뒷심은 끝까지 버티는 힘입니다. 뒷심은 포기하지 않고 완주하는 힘입니다. 인생은 마라톤입니다. 마라톤에서 가장 중요한 것은 완주하는 것입니다. 완주하기 위해서는 뒷심이 있어야 합니다. 뒷심의 본질은 지속력입니다. 지속력이란 잠깐 반짝이는 힘이 아니라 끝까지 버티는 힘을 의미합니다. 뒷심은 회복력입니다. 거듭 다시 일어나는 힘입니다. 뒷심은 인내력입니다. 고난과 지루함과 권태를 이겨내고 계속 전진하는 힘입니다. 왜 뒷심이 중요할까요? 성과는 끝에서 결정되기 때문입니다. 뒷심은 포기하지 않는 마음입니다. 성경은 뒷심을 강조합니다. “선을 행하되 낙심하지 말지니 포기하지 아니하면 거두리라”(갈 6:9).

하나님의 사람은 초심으로 시작하고, 항상심으로 중심을 지키며, 진심으로 관계를 세우고, 전심으로 헌신하며, 충심으로 신뢰를 쌓고, 향상심으로 성장하며, 뒷심으로 완주하는 사람입니다. 최선을 다해 마음을 가꾸십시오. 또한 우리 안에서 시작한 것을 이루시는 하나님을 신뢰하십시오. “너희 안에서 착한 일을 시작하신 이가 그리스도 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을 우리는 확신하노라”(빌 1:6). 날마다 마음의 정원을 가꾸는 지혜로운 정원사가 되시길 빕니다.

Seven Kinds of Hearts I Want to Cultivate Every Day

   The heart is like a garden. If it is not tended with care each day, it will soon become overrun with weeds. Every garden needs a gardener. A garden without a gardener quickly becomes desolate. The gardener’s task is to nurture the garden daily. Each of us is a gardener of the heart. To guard and cultivate the heart well is wisdom. “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” (Proverbs 4:23) There are seven kinds of hearts I long to nurture.

First, a beginning heart. A beginning heart is our first intention. It is the initial tenderness and awe we experienced when God first called us. It is a pure heart — a heart of first love toward God. The Lord desires that we live with this first love alive within us. Jesus said to the church in Ephesus, “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.” (Revelation 2:4) To keep the heart of the beginning, one must remain humble. When pride enters, the first love fades. When it fades, the heart grows dull — what was once warm and soft becomes cold and indifferent. The heart of the beginning is a heart that stays rooted in God’s calling. It returns again and again to the source of living water. True spirituality holds fast to this heart to the end. When we lose it, we lose our way; when we recover it, the path opens once more.

Second, a steadfast heart. A steadfast heart is a consistent heart — a reflection of the character of Jesus Christ. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) It is the stable center that does not waver. Steadfastness is integrity and faithfulness; and faithfulness builds trust. A steadfast heart remains balanced within, unshaken by circumstances or emotions. The world changes, but those who keep their center will ultimately prevail.

Third, a sincere heart. A sincere heart is honest, without pretense or disguise. It is the deepest language of trust that one person can convey to another. Words may deceive, but sincerity cannot. Sincerity is the foundation of all relationships; trust begins there. Before God, sincerity means truth in the inner being. “Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.” (Psalm 51:6) Augustine said, “Sincerity not only moves people — it pleases God.”

Fourth, a wholehearted heart. A wholehearted heart is undivided — a heart fully directed toward God. God dislikes a divided heart. To live wholeheartedly is to devote oneself fully to God. God meets those who seek Him with all their hearts: “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13) Wholeheartedness is not merely passion; it is direction. Even when shaken, a wholehearted person does not lose their way. Augustine once said, “God does not ask for much, only for all.”

Fifth, a loyal heart. A loyal heart produces faithfulness. To be faithful is to keep God’s Word at the center of one’s heart and live it out. Loyalty is the weight of the soul that preserves both relationship and calling. It shows itself not in grand acts, but in faithfulness to small things — quiet, deep, and steady. People admire outward brilliance, but God delights in those who serve faithfully in small, unseen places (Matthew 25:21). Those with loyal hearts are faithful in what they are entrusted with — and faithful to the end. D. L. Moody said, “Real loyalty is revealed when no one is watching.”

Sixth, an ascending heart. A heart that continually strives upward walks hand in hand with steadfastness. It is a heart of aspiration and direction — an active, positive desire to grow and improve. It refuses to settle for the present but seeks constant development. It is the driving force of growth and the mark of maturity. Such a heart begins with humility and a learner’s spirit. It values maturity over success and longs spiritually to become more like Christ. James Clear wrote, “Small, consistent improvements change a life.” True self-love is found in the heart that ascends. Aristotle said, “Aspiration is the wisest form of self-love.”

Seventh, a persevering heart. A persevering heart endures to the end. It is the strength to finish the race without giving up. Life is a marathon; what matters most is finishing well. Perseverance is the essence of endurance — not a brief burst of strength, but the power to keep standing. It is resilience — the ability to rise again and again. It is patience — the strength to overcome pain, boredom, and weariness while pressing forward. Why is perseverance so important? Because the outcome is determined at the end. Perseverance is the heart that refuses to give up. Scripture emphasizes it: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)

A person of God begins with a heart of the beginning, keeps a steadfast heart, builds relationships with a sincere heart, serves with a wholehearted heart, earns trust with a loyal heart, grows with an ascending heart, and finishes the race with a persevering heart. Tend your heart with all your might. And trust in God, who brings to completion the good work He has begun in you: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6) May you become a wise gardener who daily cultivates the garden of your heart.
