[목회서신] 다섯 가지 지혜의 원천 | Five Sources of Wisdom

지혜는 보석보다 귀합니다. 고기가 물을 떠나 살 수 없듯이 인간은 지혜 없이 풍성한 삶을 살 수 없습니다. 성경은 지혜의 중요성을 많이 강조합니다. 지혜를 얻는 자가 복이 있다고 말씀합니다. “지혜는 그 얻은 자에게 생명 나무라 지혜를 가진 자는 복되도다”(잠 3:18). 지혜가 제일이라고 말씀합니다. “지혜가 제일이니 지혜를 얻으라 네가 얻은 모든 것을 가지고 명철을 얻을지니라”(잠 4:7). 우리는 예수님의 어릴 적의 모습 속에서 지혜의 중요성을 배웁니다. “아기가 자라며 강하여지고 지혜가 충만하며 하나님의 은혜가 그의 위에 있더라”(눅 2:40). “예수는 지혜와 키가 자라가며 하나님과 사람에게 더욱 사랑스러워 가시더라”(눅 2:52). 부모는 자녀를 키울 때 예수님처럼 지혜가 자라고, 지혜가 충만하도록 키워야 합니다.

저는 지혜에 관심이 많습니다. 왜냐하면 지혜를 얻는 것이 금과 은을 얻는 것보다 귀하기 때문입니다. “지혜를 얻는 것이 금을 얻는 것보다 얼마나 나은고 명철을 얻는 것이 은을 얻는 것보다 더욱 나으니라”(잠 16:16). 사도 바울은 성도들에게 그리스도와 함께 모든 지혜를 가르치기 원했습니다. “우리가 그를 전파하여 각 사람을 권하고 모든 지혜로 각 사람을 가르침은 각 사람을 그리스도 안에서 완전한 자로 세우려 함이니”(골 1:28). 지혜를 얻기 위해서는 지혜를 얻을 수 있는 원천을 아는 것이 중요합니다. 제가 경험한 다섯 가지 지혜의 원천을 나누고 싶습니다.

첫째, 성삼위 하나님이 지혜의 원천이십니다. 하나님 아버지는 모든 지혜의 원천이십니다. 하나님 아버지는 예수님 안에 지혜와 지식의 모든 보화를 담아 주셨습니다. “그 안에는 지혜와 지식의 모든 보화가 감추어져 있느니라”(골 2:3). 또한 성령님은 지혜와 지식의 영이십니다(사 11:2). 지혜를 얻는 가장 좋은 길은 하나님을 가까이하는 것입니다. 지혜가 필요할 때마다 하나님께 기도함으로 지혜를 얻는 것입니다. “너희 중에 누구든지 지혜가 부족하거든 모든 사람에게 후히 주시고 꾸짖지 아니하시는 하나님께 구하라 그리하면 주시리라”(약 1:5).

둘째, 성경이 지혜의 원천입니다. 하나님은 성경 속에 하나님의 지혜를 담아 두셨습니다. 특별히 구약의 잠언, 전도서, 시편 그리고 욥기, 신약의 산상수훈과 야고보서는 지혜의 보고입니다. 성경을 읽는 것만 가지고는 안 됩니다. 성령님의 도우심을 따라 성경을 읽고 암송하고 묵상할 때 지혜를 얻게 됩니다. 성경을 읽고 깊이 묵상할 때 깨달음을 얻게 됩니다. 깨달음이 지혜입니다. 깨달음이 영감입니다. 우리는 깨달음을 통해 놀라운 아이디어를 얻게 됩니다. 깨달음을 통해 문제의 원인을 분별하게 됩니다. 깨달음을 통해 직면한 문제의 해결책을 얻게 됩니다.

셋째, 자연이 지혜의 원천입니다. 자연을 창조하신 분은 하나님이십니다. 하나님은 자연 속에 일정한 질서와 원리를 담아 두셨습니다. 자연 속에 생명이 태어나고 성장하고 성숙하고 열매를 맺는 원리가 담겨 있습니다. 자연 속에 아름다움이 있습니다. 적절한 균형과 절제와 조화가 담겨 있습니다. 자연을 가까이하고, 자연을 관찰하고 묵상할 때 놀라운 지혜를 얻게 됩니다. 자연 속에서 우리는 사계절을 만납니다. 우리 인생에도 사계절이 있습니다. 사계절을 거스를 수 없습니다. 자연 속에는 변하지 않는 법칙이 있습니다. 그 법칙을 따라 살 때 우리는 풍성한 삶을 살게 됩니다. 반면에 자연의 법칙을 깨뜨리면 우리가 깨뜨린 법칙이 우리를 깨뜨릴 수 있습니다.

넷째, 역사가 지혜의 원천입니다. 제가 성경이 지혜의 원천이라고 말씀드리는 이유는 성경 속에 역사가 담겨 있기 때문입니다. 성경 속에는 하나님이 어떻게 역사 속에서 어떤 사람과 함께 일하셨고, 어떤 방식으로 일하셨는지를 배우게 됩니다. 또한 역사 속에 담긴 문명의 흥망성쇠를 통해 우리는 많은 지혜를 얻을 수 있습니다. 조지 산타야나는 “과거를 기억하지 못하는 자들은 그것을 반복하기 마련이다.”라고 말했습니다. 그의 말은 역사 속에서 배우지 못하면 잘못된 실수를 반복할 수밖에 없다는 교훈입니다.

다섯째, 좋은 만남이 지혜의 원천입니다. 지혜로운 자와 동행하면 지혜를 얻게 됩니다. “지혜로운 자와 동행하면 지혜를 얻고 미련한 자와 사귀면 해를 받느니라”(잠 13:20). 좋은 만남은 훌륭한 스승과의 만남입니다. 탁월한 리더와의 만남입니다. 우리에게 지혜를 나누어 주는 현인과의 만남입니다. 하나님은 우리를 축복하실 때 만남을 통해 축복해 주시고, 만남을 통해 지혜를 공급해 주십니다. 좋은 만남 속에는 좋은 책이 포함되어 있습니다. 좋은 책은 우리에게 놀라운 지혜를 공급해 줍니다. 좋은 책은 우리의 지성을 자극하고, 우리 내면에 감추인 지혜를 끌어내도록 도와줍니다. 무엇보다 생각의 게으름에 빠져들지 않도록 도와줍니다. 스캇 펙은 그의 책 《아직도 가야할 길》에서 원죄를 생각의 게으름으로 보았습니다. 아담과 하와가 생각을 게으르게 함으로 사단의 유혹에 빠져들었다는 것입니다. 세상이 어려울 때일수록 지혜가 필요합니다. 지혜의 원천을 통해 풍성한 지혜를 얻어 어려울 때 더욱 빛을 발하시길 빕니다.

Five Sources of Wisdom

Wisdom is more precious than jewels. Just as fish cannot survive without water, humans cannot live abundantly without wisdom. The Bible emphasizes the importance of wisdom a lot. It says blessed are those who find wisdom. "She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed." (Proverbs 3:18). It says wisdom is the best. "The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding." (Proverbs 4:7). We learn the importance of wisdom from Jesus' childhood. "And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him." (Luke 2:40). "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." (Luke 2:52). When parents raise their children, like Jesus, they should grow in wisdom and nurture them to be full of wisdom.

I am interested in wisdom. It is because gaining wisdom is more precious than gold and silver. "How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!" (Proverbs 16:16). The apostle Paul wanted to teach the saints all wisdom with Christ. "He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ." (Colossians 1:28). In order to gain wisdom, it is important to know the source from which it can be obtained. I would like to share five sources of wisdom that I have experienced with you.

First, the Triune God is the source of wisdom. God the Father is the source of all wisdom. God the Father has put all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge in Jesus. "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." (Colossians 2:3). The Holy Spirit is also the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge (Isaiah 11:2). The best way to gain wisdom is to draw near to God. Whenever you need wisdom, you get it by praying to God. "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." (James 1:5).

Second, the Bible is the source of wisdom. God has put His wisdom in the Bible. In particular, the Old Testament Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Psalms, and Job, and the New Testament Sermon on the Mount and James are treasures of wisdom. It is not enough just to read the Bible. You will gain wisdom when you read, memorize, and meditate on the Bible with the help of the Holy Spirit. When you read the Bible and meditate deeply, you will gain enlightenment. Enlightenment is wisdom. Enlightenment is an inspiration. Enlightenment gives us amazing ideas. Through enlightenment, you can discern the cause of the problem. Through enlightenment, you will find a solution to your problem.

Third, nature is the source of wisdom. It is God who created nature. God has placed a certain order and principle in nature. It contains the principle that life is born, grows, matures, and bears fruit in nature. There is beauty in nature. It contains the right balance, moderation, and harmony. When you get close to nature, observe and meditate on nature, you gain amazing wisdom. In nature, we meet the four seasons. There are also four seasons in our life. You can't go against the four seasons. There are unchanging laws in nature. When we live by that law, we will live an abundant life. On the other hand, if we break the laws of nature, the laws we break can break us.

Fourth, history is the source of wisdom. I say the Bible is the source of wisdom because it contains history. In the Bible, you learn how God worked with certain people in history and in what ways He worked. Also, we can gain a lot of wisdom through the rise and fall of civilizations in history. George Santayana said, "Those who do not remember the past are bound to repeat it." His words are a lesson that we will inevitably repeat the wrong mistakes if we don't learn from history.

Fifth, good encounters are the source of wisdom. If you walk with a wise person, you will gain wisdom. "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm." (Proverbs 13:20). A good meeting is an encounter with a good teacher. It is a meeting with an outstanding leader. It is an encounter with the most discerning one who imparts wisdom. When God blesses us, He blesses us through encounters and provides wisdom. A good encounter includes a good book. A good book provides us with wonderful wisdom. A good book stimulates our intellect and helps us to unleash the wisdom hidden within us. Most of all, it helps you not to fall into the laziness of thinking. In his book The Road Less Traveled, Scott Peck viewed original sin as laziness of thought. It is said that Adam and Eve fell into Satan's temptation by being lazy in their thinking. The more difficult the world is, the more we need wisdom. May you receive abundant wisdom through the source of wisdom and shine even brighter in difficult times.
