[목회서신] 달팽이는 끈기로 방주에 도착했다. | The Snail Reached the Ark Through Perseverance.

찰스 스펄전은 “달팽이는 끈기로 방주에 도착했다”라고 설교했습니다. 정말 놀라운 통찰입니다. 달팽이가 언제 방주를 향해 어디서 출발했는지 모릅니다. 달팽이의 지혜는 자기 속도를 따라 묵묵히 방주를 향해 떠난 것입니다. 하나님은 모든 만물을 한계 안에서 살아가도록 만들었습니다. 사람마다 속도가 다릅니다. 중요한 것은 느리더라도 계속 정진하는 것입니다. 거북이가 토끼의 상대가 아니듯이 달팽이도 토끼의 상대가 아닙니다. 중요한 것은 자신의 속도를 알고 그 속도를 따라 살아가는 것입니다. 이솝 우화에 나오는 “토끼와 거북이”의 경주를 기억하실 것입니다.

옛날 옛적에, 토끼와 거북이가 살고 있었습니다. 토끼는 매우 빨랐습니다. 거북이는 매우 느렸습니다. 어느 날 토끼가 거북이를 느림보라고 놀려댔습니다. 거북이는 자극을 받고 토끼에게 달리기 경주를 청했습니다. 경주를 시작한 토끼는 거북이가 한참 뒤진 것을 보고 안심을 하고 중간에서 낮잠을 잤습니다. 그런데 토끼가 낮잠을 길게 자자 거북이는 토끼를 추월하게 됩니다. 잠에서 문득 깬 토끼는 거북이가 자신을 추월했다는 사실을 깨닫고 급히 뛰어갔지만 결과는 거북이의 승리였습니다. 이 우화는 끈기 있게 노력하는 사람이 승리한다는 것을 교훈에 줍니다. 솔로몬도 “빠른 경주자들이라고 선착하는 것이 아니며”(전 9:11상)라고 말씀합니다.

중요한 것은 각자의 속도를 잘 아는 것입니다. 하나님은 각 사람에게 적절한 속도를 허락해 주셨습니다. 중요한 것은 자신의 속도를 알고, 그 속도를 따라 살아가는 것입니다. 달팽이는 세상에서 가장 느린 동물로 시속 0.03mph의 최대속도를 냅니다. 달팽이는 부드러운 진흙투성이의 몸으로 건조하지 않게 습한 환경에서 살아가고 있습니다. 거북이는 종류에 따라 다르지만 가장 느린 거북이는 시속 0.03-0.13mph입니다. 이 거북이가 바다로 가면 속도는 22mph로 빠릅니다.

제가 목회를 시작하면서 좋아했던 것은 거북이와 독수리입니다. 이솝 우화에 나오는 거북이를 좋아했던 까닭은 거북이의 성실함 때문입니다. 거북이는 비록 속도는 느렸지만 성실했습니다. 목표가 분명했습니다. 한 방향을 선택한 후에는 다른 방향을 포기할 줄 아는 지혜가 있었습니다. 거북이는 작은 걸음을 소중히 여겼습니다. 우직함이 그의 철학이었습니다. 결국 거북이는 경주에서 이겼습니다. 저는 거북이처럼 성실하게 사는 것을 목표로 삼았습니다. 약삭빠른 것이 싫었습니다. 우직한 것이 좋았습니다. 늦지만 목표가 분명한 삶을 살기로 했습니다. 늦는 다해도 좌로나 우로나 치우치지 않는 삶을 살기로 했습니다. 정도를 걷기로 했습니다. 늦어도 날마다 정진하는 삶을 살기로 했습니다.

제가 목회의 길에 들어섰을 때 받은 유혹은 조급함에 있었습니다. 빠르고 쉬운 길을 걷고 싶은데 있었습니다. 그런 유혹을 받을 때마다 거북이를 생각하며 늦어도 정도의 길을 걷기에 힘썼습니다. 거북이의 삶은 단순합니다. 작은 일을 잘해 냅니다. 나이가 들어가면서 배운 교훈이 있다면 위대한 것은 작은 일에서 시작된다는 것입니다. 위대한 사람은 작은 일을 잘 해내는 사람이요, 평범 속에서 위대함을 발견할 줄 아는 사람입니다. 저는 사소한 일을 사소하게 생각하지 않으며, 사소한 일을 가치 있게 여길 줄 아는 사람이라면 누구나 위대한 사람이라고 생각합니다.

저는 거북이를 좋아하는 것만큼 독수리를 좋아합니다. 제가 독수리를 좋아하는 이유는 독수리의 눈 때문입니다. 독수리는 태양을 직시하는 눈을 가졌습니다. 독수리의 눈은 예리합니다. 분별력이 탁월합니다. 독수리는 앞을 내다보고, 전체를 볼 줄 아는 눈을 소유했습니다. 멀리 있는 것을 보고, 깊이 볼 줄 아는 눈을 소유했습니다. 저는 비둘기의 부드러운 눈과 함께 독수리의 예리한 눈을 동경합니다. 그 이유는 인생에서 중요한 것은 분별력이기 때문입니다. 또한 독수리는 필요할 때는 엄청난 속도를 가지고 움직입니다. 속도가 중요한 시대에 거북이의 속도만 찬양할 수는 없습니다. 인내 중에 좋은 기회가 찾아왔을 때 빠르게 좋은 기회를 포착하는 것은 지혜입니다.

The Snail Reached the Ark Through Perseverance.

Charles Spurgeon preached, “By perseverance, the snail reached the ark.” What an amazing insight. We don't know when or where the snail set off from to get to the ark. The snail's wisdom was in setting its own pace and quietly setting out for the ark. God created all things to live within limits. Everyone's speed is different. The important thing is to keep going, even if it's slow. The tortoise is no match for the hare, and the snail is no match for the hare. The important thing is to know your pace and live at it. You may remember the race between “The Tortoise and the Hare” in Aesop's fable.

Once upon a time, there lived a Hare and a Tortoise. The Hare was very fast. The Tortoise was very slow. One day, the Hare teased the Tortoise for being slow. The Tortoise got irritated and challenged the Hare to a race. The Hare, who started the race, was relieved to see that the Tortoise was far behind and took a nap in the middle of the race. But while the Hare was taking a long nap, the Tortoise overtakes the Hare. The Hare suddenly woke up and realized that the Tortoise had overtaken her, and quickly ran towards the finish line, but the race resulted with Tortoise's victory. This fable teaches its readers a lesson; that those who persevere in their efforts win. Solomon also says, “The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong” (Ecclesiastes 9:11a).

The important thing is to know your own pace. God has given each person the right pace. The important thing is to know your own pace and live at that pace. Snails are the slowest animal in the world, reaching a maximum speed of 0.03 mph. Snails live in a humid environment with their soft, muddy body that does not dry out. Tortoise vary in species, but the slowest tortoise is between 0.03 and 0.13 mph. But when this tortoise goes to sea, it speeds up to 22 mph.

When I started my ministry, my favorite things were tortoises and eagles. I liked Tortoise in Aesop's fable because of Tortoise's diligence. Although Tortoise was slow, he was diligent. His goal was clear. After choosing one direction, there was wisdom in knowing how to give up on the other direction. Tortoise valued small steps. Honesty was his philosophy. In the end, Tortoise won the race. I made it my goal to live faithfully like Tortoise. I hated being shrewd. It was good for me to be simple and honest. Although it might take longer, I decided to live my life with a clear goal. Even if it's late, I decided to live my life that doesn't swerve to the right or to the left. I decided to walk the right path. I decided to live a life of devotion every day even if it’s late.

The temptation I received when I entered the path of ministry was impatience. I wanted to take the quick and easy route. Every time I was tempted, I thought of the tortoise and tried my best to walk the right path even if it the longer path. The life of a tortoise is simple, focusing on doing small things. If there's one lesson I've learned as I've gotten older is that great things start with small things. Great people are those who are good at even the small things and who know how to find greatness in the ordinary. I don't believe little things are little things, and I believe that anyone who can value little things is a great person.

I like eagles as much as I like tortoises. The reason I like eagles is because of their eyes. The eagle has eyes that face the sun. The eagle's eye is keen. Their discernment is excellent. The eagle possesses eyes that can see ahead and see the whole picture. They have eyes that can see far and see deeply. I long for the keen eyes of an eagle with the tender eyes of a dove. The reason is that the important thing in life is discernment. Eagles also move with great speed when needed. In an era where speed matters, we can't just praise the tortoise's speed. It is wise to seize a good opportunity quickly when a good opportunity comes while you persevere.

The reason I like both tortoise and eagle is because of the balance I see between both animals. To be able to, both, prepare by laying down like a tortoise and prepare by soaring like an eagle, if necessary. What matters is balance. Be sincere and honest like a turtle. Prepare for the future. Also, if God gives you a chance, train yourself to soar through the sky like an eagle. Snails and turtles aren't the only ones with tenacity. Eagles are also persistent. Young eagles go through countless repetitions of persevering training to soar into the sky. Speed doesn't happen overnight. During repetitions, the speed increases. You will reach the pinnacle of excellence. Even if it is a little late, persevere in what you are doing. Persistence is wisdom. Perseverance is the key to achieving your goals. Louis Pasteur said, “Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal. My strength lies solely in my tenacity.” May you live a victorious life with the wisdom of persistence.
