[목회서신] 대나무처럼 매듭을 짓고 새롭게 시작하십시오! | Tie the Knot as The Bamboo and Start Anew!

하나님이 새해를 선물로 주셨습니다. 하나님이 새해를 선물로 주신 까닭은 새롭게 시작하도록 우리를 돕기 위해서입니다. 하나님은 우리가 정기적으로 새롭게 시작하길 원하십니다. 쓰레기통을 정기적으로 비우는 것처럼 우리가 정기적으로 과거를 떠나 새롭게 시작하길 원하십니다. 우리가 정기적으로 과거를 떠날 때 새롭게 시작할 수 있습니다. 과거를 떠난다는 것은 어떤 의미에서 쓰레기통을 비우는 것과 같습니다. 과거를 통해 배운 교훈과 지혜는 남겨 두십시오. 하지만 쓰레기와 같은 과거는 과감하게 버리십시오. 우리의 앞길을 막는 과거는 버려야 합니다. 쓰레기통만 비울 것이 아니라 마음의 쓰레기통도 비워야 합니다. 집에 있는 쓰레기통보다 우리 마음의 쓰레기통이 더 문제가 될 수 있습니다. 쓰레기통을 비우면 새로운 공간이 생깁니다. 새로운 공간이 생기면 숨통이 트이는 경험을 하게 됩니다.

쓰레기는 비우지 않으면 악취가 납니다. 악취가 나는 쓰레기를 좋아할 사람은 없습니다. 하지만 악취가 나는 쓰레기도 그 나름대로의 쓸모가 있고 제 자리가 있습니다. 쓰레기를 집에 쌓아두면 쓰레기가 우리를 불쾌하게 하고 불행하게 만듭니다. 하지만 그 쓰레기를 밭에 뿌리고 흙을 덮는다면 땅을 기름지게 할 수 있습니다. 쓰레기가 비료가 되어 땅을 기름지게 만들면 땅에서 아름다운 꽃이 피게 됩니다. 기름진 땅은 우리를 건강하게 만드는 먹거리를 제공해 줍니다. 우리가 쓰임새를 올바로 알고 있으면 모든 것을 유익하게 만들 수도 있습니다.

새로운 시작을 위해서는 버릴 줄 알고 비울 줄 알아야 합니다. 때로는 사용하지 않는 물건을 비울 때 마음이 새로워지는 것을 경험합니다. 우리가 쌓아둔 물건 중에 우리 가슴을 뛰게 하지 않는 물건은 비워도 됩니다. 가슴 뛰게 만들지 않은 물건을 필요한 사람에게 나누어 주는 것도 좋습니다. 우리 가슴을 뛰게 만들지 않은 물건이, 어떤 사람의 손에 들어가면 그 사람의 가슴을 뛰게 만들 수도 있습니다.

새롭게 시작한다는 것은 매듭을 잘 짓고 새롭게 출발한다는 것을 의미합니다. 저는 대나무를 좋아합니다. 그 이유는 대나무가 주는 교훈 때문입니다. 모소라는 대나무는 씨앗을 심으면 4년 정도 땅속에서 뿌리를 키웁니다. 겉으로 자신을 드러내지 않고 뿌리를 키웁니다. 대나무는 순을 내기 전에 먼저 땅속으로 멀리 뻗어나갑니다. 5년째가 되면 대나무 밭에서 죽순이 돋기 시작합니다. 일단 죽순이 돋기 시작하면 6주가 채 되기도 전에 15미터 이상 자라게 됩니다. 사실 6주 만에 자란 것이 아닙니다. 4년 동안 땅속에서 숨어 자란 것입니다. 그리고 5년 째 되었을 때 죽순이 돋아난 것입니다. 대나무는 미래를 준비하고 가꾸면서 때가 되면 힘차게 뻗어나갈 줄 압니다. 대나무에게서 우리는 자신을 감출 줄 아는 지혜를 배웁니다. 대나무에게서 보이지 않은 뿌리를 가꾸는 지혜를 배웁니다. 대나무에게서 오랫동안 기다리며 인내하는 지혜를 배웁니다.

대나무는 매듭을 지어가며 자랍니다. 대나무의 지혜입니다. 그냥 쭉 위로 뻗어 오르지 않고 매듭을 짓고 새롭게 성장하고, 또 다시 매듭을 짓고 새롭게 성장합니다. 그런 까닭에 대나무는 폭풍이 불어와도 잘 꺾이지 않습니다. 대나무는 유연합니다. 굽힐 줄 알지만 꺾이지 않습니다. 저는 굽힐 줄 알지만 꺾이지 않는 대나무의 유연함을 좋아합니다. 너무 강하고 거치면 부러집니다. 반면에 유연하면 부러지지 않습니다. 한 해를 마감하고 새 해를 시작하는 것은 대나무가 매듭을 짓고 새롭게 성장하는 것과 같습니다. 희망찬 새 해를 새롭게 성장하는 기회로 삼으십시오.

하나님은 늘 만물을 새롭게 하십니다(계 21:5). 하나님은 과거에 머물지 않으십니다. 하나님은 새 일을 창조하시는 분입니다(렘 31:22). 새 일을 행하시는 분입니다(렘 33:2). 하나님은 우리도 새 일을 행하길 원하십니다. 새 노래를 부르길 원하십니다(시 96:1). 새 시를 쓰고 새 책을 읽고 새 책을 쓰길 원하십니다. 새 그림을 그리길 원하십니다. 새로운 제품을 만들기 원하십니다. 새 생명을 구원하길 원하십니다. 새로운 사람을 만나길 원하십니다. 새로운 사람을 예수님께 인도하고 그 사람을 그리스도의 제자로 삼길 원하십니다.

하나님과 함께 새해를 시작하십시오. 하나님의 말씀과 함께 새해를 시작하십시오. 말씀을 통독하는 일에 새롭게 도전하십시오. 하나님을 앙망함으로 새해를 시작하십시오(사 40:31). 하나님을 앙망하는 사람은 새 힘을 얻게 됩니다. 독수리처럼 비상하게 됩니다. 거룩한 기대를 품고 새해를 시작하십시오. 거룩한 기대 속에 우리의 믿음이 담겨 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 기대를 따라 역사하십니다. 하나님께 기도함으로 새롭게 시작하십시오. 하나님은 우리가 구하는 것보다 더욱 풍성하게 채워 주십니다(엡 3:20). 하나님을 경외하는 마음으로 새해를 시작하십시오(잠 9:10). 하나님이 마음에 품게 하신 소원과 함께 새해를 시작하십시오(빌 2:13). 하나님이 새해에 큰 은혜를 한 분 한 분 위에 부어 주시길 기도드립니다.

Tie the Knot as The Bamboo and Start Anew!

God has given us a New Year as a gift. The reason God gave us a New Year as a gift is to help us start anew. God wants us to make a fresh start on a regular basis. Just as we regularly empty our trash cans, He wants us to regularly leave the past and start anew. When we regularly leave the past, we can start anew. Leaving the past is, in a sense, like emptying the trash can. Store the lessons and wisdom learned from the past and boldly throw away the past like garbage. We must throw away the past that blocks our future. We need to empty not only the trash can, but also the trash in our hearts. The trashcan in our hearts can be more of a problem than the trashcan in the house. Emptying the trashcan creates new space. With the new space created, you will experience yourself breathing more easily.

Garbage stinks if not emptied. No one likes stinky garbage. But even stinky garbage has its uses and its place. When we pile up trash in our house, it makes us unpleasant and unhappy. But you can make the land fertile if you spread the garbage on a field and cover it with soil. When garbage becomes fertilizer and make the land nourish, beautiful flowers bloom on the land. The fertile land provides food that makes us healthy. If we know how to use it properly, we can make everything useful.

For a new start, we need to know how to let go and empty ourselves. At times, when we empty out things we don't use, we feel refreshed. We may empty out the things that have piled up, that do not make our hearts flutter. It's also a good idea to give something that doesn't make your heart flutter to those in need. Something that doesn't make our heart flutter can make another person's heart flutter when it falls into the hands of that person.

Starting anew means tying a good knot and making a fresh start. I like bamboos. The reason is because of the lessons that bamboos teach. A bamboo called “Moso” grows roots in the ground for about 4 years after its seeds are planted. It grows its roots without revealing itself outwardly. Bamboos first stretches far into the ground before it sprouts. In the fifth year, the bamboo shoots start to sprout in the bamboo fields. Once the bamboo shoots start to sprout, they can grow to over 15 meters (50 ft) in less than six weeks. In fact, it didn't just grow in six weeks. It grew secretly in the ground for 4 years. And in the fifth year, the bamboo shoots sprouted. Bamboos know how to grow vigorously when the time comes, while preparing and nurturing the future. From bamboos we learn the wisdom in hiding ourselves. We learn the wisdom of cultivating invisible roots from bamboos. From bamboos we learn the wisdom of long waiting and perseverance.

Bamboos grow in knots. It is the wisdom of the bamboos. It doesn't just stretch upwards, but ties a knot and grows anew, and again ties a knot and grows anew. That's why bamboos don’t break easily even in storms. Bamboos are flexible. It knows how to bend, but it doesn't break. I like the flexibility of bamboos which can bend but doesn't break. If it’s too strong and rough, it will break. On the other hand, if it is flexible, it will not break. Closing the year and starting a new year is like a bamboo tying a knot and growing anew. Use the hopeful new year as an opportunity for new growth.

God always makes all things new (Revelation 21:5). God does not dwell in the past. God is the creator of new things (Jeremiah 31:22). He is the doer of new things (Jeremiah 33:2). God wants us to do new things too. He wants us to sing a new song (Psalm 96:1). He wants to write new poems, read new books, and write new books. He wants us to paint a new picture. He wants us to create a new product. He wants us to save a new life. He wants us to meet new people. He wants us to lead new people to Jesus and make them disciples of Christ.

Start the new year with God. Start the new year with the Word of God. Take on a new challenge in reading the Word. Start the new year by hoping in God (Isaiah 40:31). Those who hope in God will receive new strength. They will soar like an eagle. Start the new year with holy expectations. Our faith is contained in holy expectations. God works according to our expectations. Start anew by praying to God. God provides more abundantly than we ask (Ephesians 3:20). Start the new year in the fear of God (Proverbs 9:10). Start the new year with a wish that God has placed in your heart (Philippians 2:13). I pray that God will pour out great grace on each and every one of you in this new year.
