[목회서신] 동경은 깊이 숨어 있는 갈망입니다! | Longing is a Deeply Hidden Desire!

이민자들은 누구나 모국(母國)을 동경합니다. 모국은 어머니의 나라입니다. 모국은 우리를 낳아준 나라입니다. 이민자들이 모국을 그리워하는 이유는 모국에 고향이 있기 때문입니다. 우리는 고향을 그리워합니다. 최근에 모국을 방문하는 이민자가 아주 많아졌습니다. 모국이 그립고, 고향이 그립기 때문입니다. 고향을 동경하는 것은 지극히 자연스러운 것입니다. 귀소본능(歸巢本能)이란 말을 들어보셨을 것입니다. 귀소본능이란 동물이 자기 서식처나 둥지로 되돌아오는 성질이나 능력을 의미합니다.

연어는 민물 하천에서 알을 까고 태어나 하류로 여정을 떠나 바다로 향합니다. 연어는 보통 3,000개에서 4,000개의 알을 낳는다고 합니다. 그중에 세 마리 정도가 다시 모천(母川)으로 돌아옵니다. 바다에서 성장한 연어는 산란(産卵) 시기가 되면 자신이 태어났던 상류로 알을 낳기 위해 거슬러 오릅니다. 연어가 태어난 곳으로 향할 때, 거센 역류를 헤쳐나갑니다. 때로는 폭포를 뛰어오릅니다. 연어가 모천(母川)에 도착하면 민물에 다시 적응하면서 알을 낳습니다. 알을 낳은 연어는 일주일 이내에 거의 죽습니다.

비둘기와 제비도 집을 중심으로 귀소를 학습시키고 점차 그 반지름을 넓혀나갑니다. 그리고 때가 되면 아주 먼 곳에서도 처음 성장했던 곳으로 되돌아옵니다. 놀라운 본능입니다. 참으로 신비롭습니다. 귀소본능은 창조주 하나님이 그들 속에 넣어준 본능입니다. 하나님은 사람들 안에도 귀소본능을 넣어주셨습니다.

사람이 고향을 그리워하는 본능을 동경(憧憬)이라고 부릅니다. 동경은 여러 가지 말로 표현될 수 있습니다. 동경은 그리움입니다. 동경은 갈망입니다. 동경은 소원입니다. 동경은 소망입니다. 동경은 사모함입니다. 동경은 연모입니다. 동경은 흠모입니다. 동경은 목마름입니다. 우리는 살아 있는 동안 동경과 더불어 삽니다. 나이가 들었다고 동경이 사라지는 것이 아닙니다. 나이가 들어도 동경은 여전히 우리 안에 살아 약동합니다.

동경은 굉장한 힘입니다. 거대한 에너지입니다. 동경은 무엇인가를 바라고, 무엇인가를 성취합니다. 생텍쥐페리는 “당신이 배를 만들고 싶다면 사람들에게 목재를 가져오게 하고 일을 지시하고 일감을 나눠주는 일을 하지 말라. 대신 그들에게 저 넓고 끝없는 바다에 대한 동경심을 키워줘라.”고 말했습니다. 바다에 대한 동경심을 품은 사람들은 배를 만듭니다. 동경심이란 배를 만들게 하는 힘입니다.

이민자들이 동경했던 고향을 방문하고 돌아올 때 공허함을 느낍니다. 그 이유는 방문한 고향이 더 이상 그리워했던 고향이 아니기 때문입니다. 어릴 적 성장했던 고향의 모습은 사라져 버렸습니다. 몇 년 전에 고향을 방문한 적이 있습니다. 제가 살던 집을 찾아보았지만 찾을 수가 없었습니다. 고향을 방문했을 때 제가 늘 그리워하며 상상했던 어릴 적 고향은 많이 변했습니다. 바닷가에 있던 세 개의 작은 섬이 육지와 연결되어 있었습니다. 더 이상 섬이 아니었습니다.

인간에게는 더욱 원초적인 고향이 있습니다. 그것은 어머니의 자궁입니다. 어머니의 품입니다. 나이가 들어보니 우리를 낳아주신 어머니는 우리 곁을 떠나셨습니다. 어머니를 그리워하지만, 어머니를 만날 수가 없습니다. 그런데 마음의 고향인 어머니를 그리워하는 것보다 더 깊은 동경이 우리 안에 있습니다. 그것은 하나님의 나라입니다. 본향입니다. 우리를 만드신 하나님이십니다.

우리는 모두 하나님께로부터 왔습니다. 우리는 이 세상에 사는 동안 수많은 것들로 목말라합니다. 성공과 성취와 권력과 재력과 쾌락을 통해 목마름을 해소하려고 합니다. 하지만 성공은 더 큰 성공을 바라고, 성취는 더 큰 성취를 바랍니다. 쾌락에 대한 목마름은 오히려 공허를 낳습니다. 그 이유는 하나님만이 채워주실 수 있는 갈망 때문입니다. 어거스틴의 고백이 맞습니다. “오, 하나님께서 당신을 향하도록 우리를 지으셨기에 우리 마음은 당신 안에서 안식할 때까지 쉴 수 없습니다.” C.S. 루이스는 “이 세상 어떤 경험으로도 만족하지 못하는 어떤 갈망이 있다면, 내가 이 세상이 아닌 다른 세상을 위해 만들어졌기 때문이라는 것이 가장 개연성이 높은 설명이다.”라고 말했습니다.

동경은 좋은 것입니다. 동경하고 있다는 것은 아직 살아 있다는 증거입니다. 동경은 기대하는 마음입니다. 동경 속에 꿈이 있습니다. 동경 속에 비전이 담겨 있습니다. 지금보다 더 나은 미래가 있을 것이라는 희망이 담겨 있습니다. 동경은 희망처럼 우리를 지탱하는 힘입니다. 고난을 견디게 하는 힘입니다. 이 세상에서 우리가 동경했던 것 때문에 실망한다고 해서 동경을 포기하지 마십시오. 무엇보다 더 깊고 영원한 것을 동경하십시오. 하나님과 하나님의 나라를 동경하십시오. 모국집회를 떠나면서 동경이란 단어가 자꾸 떠올라서 동경에 대한 글을 썼습니다. 부족한 종을 위해 기도해 주시는 성도님들에게 감사드립니다. 성도님들을 사랑합니다.

Longing is a Deeply Hidden Desire!

All immigrants long for their motherland (母國). The motherland is the country of our mothers. The motherland is the country that gave birth to us. Immigrants long for the motherland because it is where their hometown is. We long for our hometown. Recently, the number of immigrants visiting their motherland has increased significantly. They miss their motherland and their hometown. Longing for the hometown is a perfectly natural thing. You would have heard of the term 'homing instinct' (歸巢本能). Homing instinct refers to the property or ability of an animal to return to its habitat or nest.

Salmon hatch from eggs in freshwater streams, then journey downstream to the sea. It is said that salmon lay between 3,000 and 4,000 eggs. Of those, only about three manage to return to their mother river (母川). When it is time for spawning (産卵), the salmon that have grown in the sea swim upstream to the place of their birth to lay their eggs. When salmon head towards the place they were born, they fight against strong currents. Sometimes, they even jump over waterfalls. Once the salmon reach the mother river (母川), they readapt to the freshwater and lay their eggs. Most of the salmon die within a week after laying their eggs.

Pigeons and swallows also learn to home, gradually extending the radius from their home. And when the time comes, they return to the place where they first grew. It is an amazing instinct. Truly mysterious. The homing instinct is an instinct that the Creator God has placed within them. God has also placed the homing instinct within people.

The instinct that people have to long for their hometown is called aspiration (憧憬). Aspiration can be expressed in many ways. Aspiration is longing. Aspiration is craving. Aspiration is wish. Aspiration is hope. Aspiration is yearning. Aspiration is affection. Aspiration is admiration. Aspiration is thirst. We live alongside aspiration as long as we are alive. Age does not make aspiration disappear. Aspiration still throbs vigorously within us even as we age.

Aspiration is an incredible power. It is a massive energy. Aspiration hopes for something, achieves something. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said, " If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea." People who harbor a longing for the sea build ships. Aspiration is the force that causes a ship to be built.

When immigrants who have longed for their hometown visit and return, they feel a sense of emptiness. The reason is that the visited hometown is no longer the hometown they longed for. I once visited my hometown a few years ago. I tried to find the house I lived in, but I couldn't find it. The hometown I always longed for and imagined when I visited had changed a lot. Three small islands that were by the sea were connected to the mainland. They were no longer islands.

Humans have an even more primal hometown. It is the womb of the mother. It is the embrace of the mother. As I grew older, I realized our mother who gave birth to us had left our side. We miss our mother, but we cannot meet her. However, there is a longing deeper than longing for the maternal homeland of the heart within us. It is the Kingdom of God. Our true home. It is our Creator God.

We all came from God. While we live in this world, we thirst for many things. We try to quench our thirst through success, achievement, power, wealth, and pleasure. But success breeds the desire for greater success, and achievement leads to the desire for greater achievement. Thirst for pleasure actually gives birth to emptiness. Because this is due to the yearning that only God can satisfy. Augustine's confession is correct. "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You." C.S. Lewis said, "If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world."

Aspiration is a good thing. The fact that we are aspiring means we are still alive. Aspiration is a heart that expects. Dreams are in aspiration. Visions are contained in aspiration. Hope for a better future than the present is contained in aspiration. Aspiration is a force that sustains us, like hope. It is a power that enables us to endure hardship. Do not give up aspiration just because we are disappointed with what we have aspired for in this world. Aspire for something deeper and more eternal. Aspire for God and His Kingdom. I wrote about aspiration as the word kept coming to mind after leaving the motherland meeting. I thank the saints for praying for a lacking servant. I love you, saints.
