[목회서신] 뜻밖에 베푸신 은혜에 대한 감사 | Gratitude for Unexpected Grace

저는 아브라함 인물 강해설교를 하면서 당황했던 적이 몇 번 있습니다. 그 이유는 하나님이 그에게 베푸신 뜻밖의 은혜 때문이었습니다. 창세기 12장에서 아브라함이 애굽에 내려갔을 때 아내 사라를 누이라고 속입니다. 만약 사라를 아내라고 하면 애굽 사람들이 아름다운 사라를 보고 그를 죽일 것이라고 생각한 까닭입니다. 바로가 아리따운 사라를 그의 궁으로 이끌어 들입니다. 그때 하나님이 사라의 일로 바로와 그 집에 재앙을 내리십니다.

바로가 아브라함을 불러 왜 사라를 아내라고 말하지 않았느냐고 책망하고 사라를 돌려보냅니다. 성경은 아브라함이 애굽에서 나왔을 때 모습을 “아브람에게 가축과 은과 금이 풍부하였더라”(창 13:2)고 기록합니다. 저는 하나님이 거짓말을 한 아브라함을 책망하신 것이 아니라 오히려 바로의 집에 재앙을 내리시는 것을 보면서 놀랐습니다. 아브라함에게 가축과 은과 금이 풍부하도록 축복하시는 것을 보면서 놀랐습니다. 그것은 뜻밖에 베푸신 하나님의 은혜였습니다.

비슷한 사건이 창세기 20장에 등장합니다. 아브라함이 그랄에 거할 때 그의 아내 사라를 누이라고 속입니다. 사라가 아브라함의 누이인 줄 알고 그랄 왕 아비멜렉이 사람을 보내어 사라를 데려갑니다. 하나님이 꿈에 아비멜렉에게 나타나 사라 때문에 그가 죽을 것이라고 말씀합니다. 그 이유는 사라가 남편이 있는 여자라는 것입니다. 하나님이 그 일로 아비멜렉의 집의 모든 태를 닫으십니다. 잘못은 이번에도 아브라함에게 있습니다. 그는 같은 거짓말을 반복했습니다. 그런데 하나님이 아비멜렉을 책망하십니다.

하나님은 아브라함을 아비멜렉 앞에 선지자로 세워 주십니다. 아브라함이 기도할 때 하나님은 아비멜렉과 그의 아내와 여종을 치료해 주심으로 닫힌 태를 열어주십니다. 그들로 출산케 하십니다. 사라 때문에 죽을 뻔한 아비멜렉이 그녀를 아브라함에게 돌려보내고 양과 소와 종들을 선물로 줍니다. 저는 다시 한번 당황했습니다. 거짓말을 한 것은 아브라함인데 오히려 하나님은 아비멜렉을 책망하시고, 그의 집에 벌을 내리십니다. 하나님은 아브라함을 선지자로 세우시고 풍성한 물질적인 복을 받게 하십니다. 그것은 뜻밖에 베푸신 하나님의 은혜였습니다.

저는 하나님이 아브라함을 은혜로 이끄시는 것을 보면서 책망보다 은혜가 사람을 더 변화시킨다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 물론 필요할 때는 책망을 통해 잘못된 길에서 돌이키게 해야 합니다. 아브라함이 거짓말을 한 것은 잘못한 것입니다. 아브라함은 자신의 잘못을 압니다. 그런데 하나님은 압도적인 은혜로 그의 죄를 덮어 주십니다. 그의 죄를 용서해 주십니다. 그가 직면했던 위기를 축복의 기회로 만들어 주셨습니다.

야곱에게 베푸신 은혜도 뜻밖의 은혜입니다. 그는 아버지 이삭을 속여, 형 에서가 받아야 할 축복기도를 대신 받습니다. 형 에서가 그 사실을 알고 분노해서 그를 죽이려고 했습니다. 야곱은 형 에서를 피해 삼촌 라반의 집으로 도망갑니다. 그런데 하나님은 그를 광야에서 만나 축복해 주십니다. 그에게 놀라운 축복을 약속해 주십니다. 뜻밖에 베푸신 하나님의 은혜였습니다.

야곱이 삼촌 라반의 집에서 생활한 지 20년이 되었을때 야반도주를 합니다. 라반이 그 사실을 알고 야곱을 추적합니다. 그때 하나님이 꿈속에서 라반에게 나타나셔서 “너는 삼가 야곱에게 선악간에 말하지 말라”(창 31:29)고 말씀하십니다. 하나님이 야곱을 해하려는 라반의 손에서 그를 보호해 주십니다. 야곱을 통해 이스라엘 12지파가 태어나게 하십니다. 그 아들 중에서 요셉을 애굽의 국무총리로 세워 그를 공경하게 하십니다. 유다를 통해 예수님이 태어나게 하십니다. 뜻밖에 베푸신 하나님의 은혜입니다.

성경에는 뜻밖에 베푸신 하나님의 은혜를 받은 사람들의 이야기로 가득 차 있습니다. 예수님의 족보를 보면 뜻밖의 은혜를 받은 사람들의 이름이 등장합니다. 기생 라합, 모압 여인 룻, 시아버지와 동침한 다말, 간음자요 살인자였던 다윗의 이름이 등장합니다. 그들은 모두 뜻밖의 은혜를 받은 사람들입니다. 그들이 변화된 것은 그들의 도덕이나 수양이 아니었습니다. 하나님의 풍성한 은혜와 하나님의 압도적인 은혜였습니다. 모두 하나님의 은혜로 선택을 받았고, 하나님의 은혜로 용서를 받았습니다. 하나님의 은혜로 쓰임을 받았습니다.

추수감사절에 우리가 드려야 할 감사는 하나님이 베풀어 주신 뜻밖의 은혜입니다. 누가 거짓말한 아브라함과 야곱을 정죄할 수 있을까요? 누가 기생 라합을 정죄할 수 있을까요? 누가 다윗을 정죄할 수 있을까요? 우리 모두 주님의 십자가를 통해 뜻밖의 은혜를 받은 사람들입니다. 우리가 해야 할 일은 하나님의 은혜를 찬양하며 감사하는 일입니다. 하나님의 은혜 안에서 변화되고 성숙해져가는 것입니다. 아브라함이 뜻밖의 은혜를 받으며, 그의 믿음이 성장했을 때 하나님께 이삭을 제물로 드리는 것을 봅니다. 다윗이 뜻밖의 은혜를 받으며 왕의 길을 계속 걸을 때 늘 하나님의 은혜를 찬양하는 것을 봅니다. 추수감사절을 맞이해서 그동안 받은 하나님의 풍성한 은혜, 뜻밖의 은혜를 기억하며 감사합시다.

Gratitude for Unexpected Grace

I have been taken aback several times while delivering expository sermons on the character of Abraham. The reason for that was due to the unexpected grace that God had given him. In Genesis 12, when Abraham went down to Egypt, he lies by saying his wife Sarah is his sister. He thought that if the Egyptians knew Sarah was his wife, they would kill him because of her beauty. Pharaoh, captivated by Sarah’s beauty, brings her into his palace. Then God inflicts disaster upon Pharaoh and his house because of Sarah.

Pharaoh summons Abraham and rebukes him for not saying that Sarah was his wife, and he sends her away. The Bible records that when Abraham left Egypt, “Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold” (Genesis 13:2). I was surprised to see that God did not rebuke Abraham for lying, but instead, inflicted disaster on Pharaoh’s house and blessed Abraham with wealth in livestock and in silver and gold. It was an unexpected grace from God.

A similar event appears in Genesis 20. When Abraham was staying in Gerar, he lies again by saying his wife Sarah was his sister. Thinking Sarah was Abraham’s sister, King Abimelech of Gerar sends for her. God appears to Abimelech in a dream and tells him he is about to die because of Sarah, for she is a married woman. Because of this matter, God closes all the wombs in Abimelech’s house. The wrong was again on Abraham’s part. He repeated the same lie. But it is Abimelech whom God rebukes.

God sets Abraham before Abimelech as a prophet. When Abraham prays, God heals Abimelech, his wife, and his maidservants, thus opening their wombs. Abimelech, who was nearly killed because of Sarah, returns her to Abraham and gives him sheep, oxen, and servants as gifts. I was taken aback once more. The one who lied was Abraham, but it was Abimelech whom God rebuked and punished his house. God establishes Abraham as a prophet and allows him to receive material blessings. It was an unexpected grace from God.

I realized that God leads Abraham by grace, and it is grace, more than rebuke, that transforms people. Of course, rebuke is necessary at times to turn people away from the wrong path. Abraham did wrong by lying. Abraham knew his wrongdoing. Yet, God covers his sin with overwhelming grace. He forgives his sin. He turns the crisis Abraham faced into an opportunity for blessing.

The grace bestowed upon Jacob was also unexpected. He deceived his father Isaac and received the blessing meant for his elder brother Esau. When Esau learned of this, he became angry and sought to kill Jacob. Jacob flees from Esau and goes to his uncle Laban’s house. There, God meets him in the wilderness and blesses him. It was an unexpected grace from God.

When Jacob had lived in his uncle Laban’s house for 20 years and decides to flee, Laban learns of this and pursues Jacob. Then God appears to Laban in a dream and warns him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad (Genesis 31:29). God protects Jacob from Laban’s harmful intentions. Through Jacob, the twelve tribes of Israel are born. Among his sons, Joseph is established as the prime minister of Egypt, and he is honored. Through Judah, Jesus is born. It is the unexpected grace of God.

The Bible is filled with stories of people who have received unexpected grace from God. In the genealogy of Jesus, we see names of people who received such grace: Rahab the prostitute, Ruth the Moabite woman, Tamar who slept with her father-in-law, and David, an adulterer and murderer. They all received unexpected grace. They were transformed not because of their morality or discipline, but because of God’s abundant grace and overwhelming grace. They were all chosen by God’s grace, forgiven by God’s grace, and used by God’s grace.

The gratitude we should express at Thanksgiving is for the unexpected grace God has given us. Who can condemn Abraham and Jacob for their lies? Who can condemn Rahab the prostitute? Who can condemn David? We are all recipients of unexpected grace through the Lord’s cross. What we need to do is to praise and thank God for His grace. It is to be transformed and matured within God’s grace. When Abraham received unexpected grace, we see his faith growing as he offers Isaac as a sacrifice to God. When David received unexpected grace, we see him continue on the path of kingship, always praising God’s grace. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let us remember and give thanks for the abundant and unexpected grace we have received from God.
