[목회서신] “마침내” 속에 담긴 지혜 | The Wisdom Contained in “Finally”

제가 좋아하는 단어 중에 “마침내”라는 단어가 있습니다. 왜 좋아하게 되었는지는 잘 모릅니다. 하지만 사람마다 좋아하는 단어 몇 개씩은 가슴에 품고 사는 것은 분명합니다. 제가 좋아하는 “마침내”라는 단어 속에는 깊은 뜻과 놀라운 지혜가 담겨 있습니다. 성경을 읽는 중에 제가 만난 “마침내”가 담긴 말씀을 먼저 몇 개 소개해 드리겠습니다.

   “아브람이 그의 아내 사래와 조카 롯과 하란에서 모은 모든 소유와 얻은 사람들을 이끌고 가나안 땅으로 가려고 떠나서 마침내 가나안 땅에 들어갔더라”(창 12:5). “이삭이 그 땅에서 농사하여 그 해에 백 배나 얻었고 여호와께서 복을 주시므로 그 사람이 창대하고 왕성하여 마침내 거부가 되어”(창 26:12-13). “네 조상들도 알지 못하던 만나를 광야에서 네게 먹이셨나니 이는 다 너를 낮추시며 너를 시험하사 마침내 네게 복을 주려 하심이었느니라”(신 8:16). “마침내 위에서부터 영을 우리에게 부어 주시리니 광야가 아름다운 밭이 되며 아름다운 밭을 숲으로 여기게 되리라”(사 32:15). “그 남은 사람들은 널조각 혹은 배 물건에 의지하여 나가게 하니 마침내 사람들이 다 상륙하여 구조되니라”(행 27:44). 제가 좋아하는 성경 말씀입니다. 이 말씀 안에 담겨 있는 “마침내” 속에 담긴 지혜를 몇 가지 나누고 싶습니다.

   첫째 “마침내”를 통해 장기적 사고의 지혜를 배웁니다. 인생의 문제는 조급함에 있습니다. 서두름에 있습니다. 근시안적 안목과 사고에 있습니다. 조금 멀리 보면 여유가 생깁니다. 조금 멀리 보면 흥분하지 않아도 됩니다. 인생은 마라톤입니다. 단거리 경주가 아닙니다. 그런 까닭에 조금 멀리 바라보며 달려야 합니다. 지혜로운 사람은 장기적인 안목과 사고를 가지고 삽니다. 그런 까닭에 쉽게 판단하지 않습니다. 쉽게 결론을 내리지 않습니다. 조금 더 지켜봅니다.

   둘째, “마침내”를 통해 절차와 과정의 지혜를 배웁니다. 아브라함이 마침내 가나안 땅에 들어갔다는 말씀을 묵상해 보십시오. 긴 여정이었습니다. 아브라함은 갈대아 우르에서 떠나 하란을 거처 마침내 가나안 땅에 들어갔습니다. 절차와 과정을 소중히 여기십시오. 바둑은 한 수씩 두게 되어 있습니다. 최고의 지름길은 절차와 과정을 거치는 것입니다. 급히 결정해야 할 일이 있어도 절차와 과정을 거치는 것이 지혜입니다.

   셋째, “마침내”를 통해 농작의 지혜를 배웁니다. 이삭은 유목민입니다. 하지만 흉년의 때에 블레셋 땅에서 농사하여 그 해에 백 배나 얻었습니다. 하나님이 복을 주심으로 창대하고 왕성하여 마침내 거부가 되었습니다. 변하지 않는 법칙 중의 하나가 농작의 법칙입니다. 심지 않고 거둘 수는 없습니다. 먼저 심어야 거두게 됩니다. 또한 심은 씨앗의 종류대로 거두게 됩니다. 농부는 씨앗을 심을 때 믿음을 갖고 심습니다. 씨앗 속에 담긴 무한한 잠재력과 생명력을 신뢰합니다. 또한 농부는 기다릴 줄 압니다. 하루 아침에 씨앗이 자랄 수 없다는 것을 압니다. 씨앗을 심은 후에 씨앗은 보이지 않는 곳에서 먼저 자랍니다. 보이지 않는다고 자라지 않는 것이 아닙니다. 보이지 않지만 성장하는 신비를 아는 사람이 지혜로운 사람입니다.

   넷째, “마침내”를 통해 겸손의 지혜를 배웁니다. 하나님이 이스라엘 백성을 광야에서 40년 동안 훈련시키신 이유는, 그들을 낮추신 후에 마침내 복을 주시기 위해서입니다. 하나님의 복은 겸손이라는 성품의 그릇에 담을 때 가장 안전합니다. 가장 오래갑니다. 하나님이 어떤 사람에게 큰 일을 맡기실 때 먼저 그를 낮추십니다. 그를 시험하시고 연단하십니다. 철저히 겸손케 하신 후에 그에게 일을 맡기십니다.

   다섯째, “마침내”를 통해 하나님의 때를 분별하는 지혜를 배웁니다. 하나님의 때는 가장 적합합니다. 우리는 조급합니다. 다급합니다. 그래서 하나님의 때를 육신의 힘과 방법으로 앞당기려고 합니다. 모세가 그런 경험을 했습니다. 그의 나이 40세에 서둘러 자기 백성을 구원하려고 했습니다. 그가 육신의 힘과 방법으로 이룬 것은 애굽 사람을 죽인 것입니다. 그가 생각했던 때와 하나님이 생각하신 때는 달랐습니다. 하나님의 때는 그의 나이 80세가 되었을 때 그를 통해 하나님의 백성을 구원하는 것이었습니다. “마침내” 속에는 하나님의 섭리가 담겨 있습니다. 합력하여 선을 이루시는 하나님의 지혜가 담겨 있습니다. 하지만 하나님은 가장 적합한 때를 아십니다. 가장 적합한 때에 모든 것을 합력하여 선을 이루십니다.

   하나님은 때가 찼을 때 예수님을 보내셨습니다. 우리가 결코 이해할 수 없는 십자가를 통해 우리를 구원해 주셨습니다. 하나님은 가장 적합한 때에 성령님을 보내 주셨습니다. 역사의 주관자는 하나님이십니다. 그런 까닭에 당장 눈앞에 나타난 결과로 너무 흔들릴 필요 없습니다. 하나님의 지혜와 섭리를 신뢰하십시오. 그렇다고 방관만 하며 살라는 뜻은 아닙니다. 농부처럼 씨앗을 심으십시오. 날마다 최선을 다하십시오. 하지만 결과는 하나님께 맡기십시오. 하나님은 “마침내”의 하나님이십니다. “마침내” 놀라운 일을 이루실 것입니다. “마침내” 풍성한 복을 부어 주실 것입니다. “마침내” 모든 것을 합력하여 선을 이루실 것입니다.

The Wisdom Contained in “Finally”

  One of my favorite words is finally. I’m not sure exactly why I came to love this word, but I do believe that everyone carries a few words close to their heart. Within the word finally lies a depth of meaning and surprising wisdom. Let me begin by sharing a few Bible verses where I encountered this word finally while reading Scripture.

  “He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they (finally) set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there” (Genesis 12:5); “Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him. The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he (finally) became very wealthy” (Genesis 26:12–13); “He gave you manna to eat in the desert, something your fathers had never known, to humble and to test you so that in the end it might go well with you (finally)” (Deuteronomy 8:16); “(Finally) till the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the desert becomes a fertile field, and the fertile field seems like a forest” (Isaiah 32:15); “The rest were to get there on planks or on pieces of the ship. In this way everyone (finally) reached land in safety” (Acts 27:44). These are some of my favorite verses. Let me share a few reflections on the wisdom found in the word finally that is embedded in these Scriptures.

  First, finally teaches us the wisdom of long-term thinking. The problem with life is often our impatience. We rush. We think short-term. But when we take a longer view, peace begins to settle in. When we look ahead, there’s no need to be anxious or overly excited. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. That’s why we must run with a vision that reaches farther. A wise person lives with long-term perspective. That’s why they don’t judge quickly or draw conclusions in haste. They wait and see a little longer.

  Second, finally teaches us the wisdom of process and order. Reflect on the verse that says Abraham finally entered the land of Canaan. It was a long journey. Abraham left Ur of the Chaldeans, passed through Haran, and eventually entered Canaan. Learn to value process and procedure. In a game of Go (baduk), you take one move at a time. The best shortcut is to follow proper steps. Even when decisions must be made urgently, it is wise to honor the process.

  Third, finally teaches us the wisdom of sowing and harvesting. Isaac was a nomad. Yet in a time of famine, he planted crops in the land of the Philistines and reaped a hundredfold that year. Because the Lord blessed him, he grew rich and finally became very wealthy. One of the unchanging laws of life is the law of sowing and reaping. You cannot reap without first sowing. What you reap is determined by what you sow. A farmer sows with faith, trusting in the infinite potential and life contained in the seed. A farmer also knows how to wait. Seeds do not grow overnight. After sowing, the seed begins to grow where it cannot be seen. Just because it’s not visible doesn’t mean it isn’t growing. Those who understand this hidden growth are wise.

  Fourth, finally teaches us the wisdom of humility. God trained the Israelites in the wilderness for forty years in order to humble them and then, finally, to bless them. The blessing of God is safest when it is poured into a vessel of humility. It lasts longer. When God entrusts someone with something great, He first humbles them. He tests them and refines them. Only after thoroughly humbling them does He assign them to His work.

  Fifth, finally teaches us the wisdom of discerning God’s timing. God’s timing is always perfect. But we are often impatient and urgent. So we try to bring about God’s timing through human strength and methods. Moses once did this. At age forty, he rushed to save his people by his own strength. What he achieved was the killing of an Egyptian. His timing was not God’s. God’s time came when Moses was eighty—when God used him to deliver His people. Within finally lies the providence of God—the wisdom that works all things together for good. And yet, God alone knows the perfect time. At the right time, He works all things together for good.

  God sent Jesus when the time had fully come. Through a cross we can never fully understand, He saved us. At the perfect time, He sent the Holy Spirit. God is the sovereign Lord of history. So don’t be shaken by results that appear suddenly before your eyes. Trust in God's wisdom and providence. This does not mean we should live passively. Be like a farmer—sow the seeds. Do your best each day. But entrust the results to God. God is the God of finally. He will finally accomplish amazing things. He will finally pour out abundant blessings. He will finally work all things together for good.
