[목회서신] 무릎 꿇은 나무에게 배우는 지혜 | Wisdom Learned from a Kneeling Tree

에베레스트 정상은 위험한 곳입니다. 그곳에는 산소가 희박합니다. 정상은 춥습니다. 정상에 오르는 이유는 잠시 머물다 내려오기 위함입니다. 정상에 도전하는 것은 아름다운 것입니다. 정상에 도전하는 사람들은 인간의 한계를 초월하고 싶은 열망을 품고 있습니다. 2001년에 시각장애인 가운데 최초로 에베레스트산(8550m) 등정에 성공한 미국인이 있습니다. 에렉 웨이헨메이어입니다. 그는 중학교 교사와 레슬링코치를 지냈습니다. 1살 때 희귀한 눈병으로 시력을 잃은 그는 시각장애를 극복하고 등산에 도전했습니다. 그는 33살에 시각장애인으로 사상 처음, 세계 7대륙 최고봉에 모두 올랐습니다.

정상을 정복한 사람들은 겸손합니다. 저는 정상을 정복한 사람들을 만나보면 생각보다 겸손한 것을 봅니다. 하나님을 믿는 사람들은 한결같이 “하나님의 은혜입니다.”라고 말합니다. 하나님을 믿지 않은 사람들은 “운이 좋았습니다.”라고 말합니다. 또한 “많은 분들이 도와주셨기 때문에 가능했습니다.“라고 말합니다. 혼자서 정상을 정복한 사람은 없습니다. 그런 까닭에 정상을 정복한 사람은 겸손해야 하며, 겸손할 수밖에 없습니다.

히말라야 8,000m급 16좌를 모두 오른 산악인 엄홍길은 “산은 정복하는 게 아니라 정상을 잠시 빌리는 것이다.”라고 말했습니다. 또한 그는 “산이 나를 받아 주었기 때문에 올라갈 수 있는 것이지 산이 나를 거부하면 내가 아무리 잘났어도 절대로 올라갈 수 없다. 산에서 가장 먼저 배워야 할 것은 자신을 낮추는 것이다.”라고 말했습니다.

정상으로 올라갈수록 나무를 포함해 모든 식물은 자세를 낮춥니다. 정상의 바람은 거셉니다. 그런 까닭에 언제나 자세를 낮추고 뿌리를 깊게 내립니다. 위로 성장하고 싶은 욕구를 자제하며 깊이 뿌리를 아래로 내립니다. 그래야 정상에서 살아남을 수 있기 때문입니다. 로키산맥 3천 미터 높이에 수목 한계선인 지대가 있습니다. 이 지대의 나무들은 매서운 바람 때문에 곧게 자라지 못합니다. 한결같이 “무릎 꿇고 있는 모습”을 한 채 지내야 합니다. 이 나무들은 열악한 환경에 살아남기 위해 무서운 인내를 발휘합니다. 그런데 세계적으로 가장 공명이 잘 되는 명품 바이올린은 바로 이 “무릎 꿇은 나무”로 만든다고 합니다.

사람도 마찬가지입니다. 높은 곳에 올라설수록 자세를 낮추어야 합니다. 겸손해야 합니다. 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 무릎 꿇은 나무처럼 날마다 무릎을 꿇고 기도해야 합니다. 하나님이 존귀하게 쓰신 인물들은 한결같이 겸손했습니다. 자신을 낮출 줄 알았습니다. 요셉은 모든 공을 하나님께 돌렸습니다. 바로가 요셉에게 “너는 꿈을 들으면 능히 푼다 하더라”(창 41:15)고 말했습니다. 그때 요셉이 바로에게 “내가 아니라 하나님께서 바로에게 편안한 대답을 하시리이다”(창 41:16)라고 대답합니다.

다니엘은 바벨론에 포로로 끌려가서 오랫동안 총리의 자리를 지킨 사람입니다. 그의 승리의 비밀은 겸손에 있습니다. 다니엘이 느부갓네살의 꿈을 해석해 줄 때 “그가 아니라 하나님”이심을 분명하게 밝힙니다. “다니엘이 왕 앞에 대답하여 이르되 왕이 물으신 바 은밀한 것은 지혜자나 술객이나 박수나 점쟁이가 능히 왕께 보일 수 없으되 오직 은밀한 것을 나타내실 이는 하늘에 계신 하나님이시라”(단 2:27-28상). 그는 바벨론에 포로로 끌려간 후에 하나님 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 하루에 세 번씩 기도했습니다. “다니엘이 이 조서에 왕의 도장이 찍힌 것을 알고도 자기 집에 돌아가서는 윗방에 올라가 예루살렘으로 향한 창문을 열고 전에 하던 대로 하루 세 번씩 무릎을 꿇고 기도하며 그의 하나님께 감사하였더라”(단 6:10).

예수님은 하나님의 아들이십니다. 하나님이십니다. 하지만 예수님은 십자가를 지시기 위해 무릎을 꿇고 기도하셨습니다. “그들을 떠나 돌 던질 만큼 가서 무릎을 꿇고 기도하여”(눅 22:41). 예수님은 겸손하신 주님이십니다. 예수님은 무릎을 꿇고 기도하셨습니다. 무릎을 꿇고 제자들의 발을 씻으셨습니다. 누군가의 발을 씻어 주기 위해서는 무릎을 꿇어야 합니다. 예수님은 제자들의 발을 씻어 주시기 위해 무릎을 꿇으셨습니다. 무릎 꿇음은 비굴함이 아닙니다. 무릎을 꿇고 기도하고, 무릎을 꿇고 섬기는 것은 지혜입니다. 낮춤이 높임입니다. 낮출 줄 알아야 더 높은 정상에 오를 수 있습니다. 또한 높은 정상에서 겸손히 만민을 섬길 수 있습니다(창 50:20).

뿌리 깊은 나무는 밝은 태양만 좋아하지 않습니다. 뿌리 깊은 나무는 어둠까지 사랑합니다. 뿌리는 빛 가운데 자라지 않고 어둠 가운데 자랍니다. 뿌리는 어둠 가운데 점점 깊이 뿌리를 내립니다. 우리는 나무에게서 배워야 합니다. 무릎 꿇은 나무에게서 명품 바이올린이 탄생합니다. 시련과 역경을 이겨낸 무릎 꿇은 나무가 아름다운 선율을 발합니다. 우리 모두 자신을 낮추어 무릎 꿇은 나무가 되는 지혜를 갖고 살아가면 좋겠습니다.

Wisdom Learned from a Kneeling Tree

The peak of Everest is a dangerous place. Oxygen is scarce there. It's cold at the summit. The purpose in climbing to the mountain’s peak is to only stay for a while and climb back down. The challenge to reach the peak of a mountain is a beautiful thing. Those who challenge to reach the summit aspire to transcend human limitations. In 2001, an American succeeded in climbing Mount Everest (8550m) for the first time among blind people. It was Erik Weihenmayer. He has been a middle school teacher and wrestling coach. Having lost his sight due to a rare eye disease, he overcame his visual disability and challenged himself to the peak. At the age of 33, he climbed the highest peaks on all seven continents for the first time ever as a blind man.

Those who have conquered the summit are humble. When I meet people who have conquered the summit, I see that they are humbler than I thought. People who believe in God always say, “It is God’s grace.” People who don't believe in God say, "I was lucky." They always say, “It was only possible because of the help of many people.” There is no one who conquered the summit alone. Therefore, those who have conquered the summit must be humble and cannot help but to be humble.

Mountaineer Um Hong-gil, who has climbed all 16 Himalayan 8,000-meter peaks, said, "We don’t conquer mountains. Their peaks are rented for a while." He also said, “I can climb because the mountain accepts me, but if the mountain rejects me, no matter how good I am, I can never climb it. The first thing to learn on the mountain is to humble yourself.”

As you climb to the top, all plants, including trees, lower their posture. The wind at the top is strong. That's why they always keep their posture low and grow their roots down deeply. They resist their desire to grow upward and rather deeply root downward. Because only then can they survive at the top. At a height of 3,000 meters in the Rocky Mountains, there is a timberline. Trees in this area do not grow straight because of the fierce winds. They must remain “on their knees” at all times. These trees display dreadful perseverance to survive in harsh environments. However, it is said that the world's most resonant luxury violin is made of this “kneeling tree.”

The same goes for humans. The higher you go, the lower your posture should be. We must be humble. Those who believe in Jesus must kneel and pray like a kneeling tree every day. Those who were used by God honorably were all humble. They knew how to humble themselves. Joseph gave all the credit to God. Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it” (Genesis 41:15). At that time, Joseph replied, “I cannot do it, but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires” (Genesis 41:16).

Daniel was taken captive to Babylon and held the position of prime minister for a long time. The secret of his victory lies in humility. When Daniel interpreted Nebuchadnezzar's dream, he made it clear that "it is not him, but God." “Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries” (Daniel 2:27–28a). After he was taken captive to Babylon, he knelt before God and prayed three times a day. “Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before” (Daniel 6:10).

Jesus is the Son of God. He is God. But Jesus got down on his knees and prayed to carry his cross. “He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed” (Luke 22:41). Jesus is a humble Lord. Jesus got down on his knees and prayed. He knelt down and washed the feet of his disciples. You must get down on your knees to wash someone's feet. Jesus knelt to wash the feet of his disciples. Kneeling is not humiliation. Kneeling to pray and kneeling to serve is wisdom. Lowering is lifting. You need to know how to lower yourself so that you can climb a higher peak. You can also humbly serve all people from the top (Genesis 50:20).

Deep-rooted trees don't just like bright sun. Deep-rooted trees love even darkness. Roots do not grow in light, but in darkness. The roots grow deeper and deeper in the darkness. We must learn from trees. A luxury violin is born from a kneeling tree. A kneeling tree that has overcome trials and adversities sounds a beautiful melody. I hope we all humble ourselves and live with the wisdom of becoming a kneeling tree.
