[목회서신] 물을 구하지 말고 샘을 구하십시오! | Don’t Look for Water, But Look for a Spring!

하나님은 부모님을 공경하는 자녀에게 놀라운 축복을 약속하셨습니다. 십계명 가운데 부모 공경은 다섯 번째 계명입니다(출 20:12). 십계명은 하나님을 향한 계명과 사람을 향한 계명으로 나누어져 있습니다. 첫 번째 계명에서 네 번째 계명까지는 하나님을 향한 계명입니다. 다섯 번째 계명에서 열 번째 계명은 사람을 향한 계명입니다. 사람을 향한 계명 가운데 첫 번째 계명이 부모 공경에 대한 계명입니다. 사도 바울은 성령 충만의 열매 중의 하나인 부모 공경에 대해 기록하고 있습니다. “자녀들아 주 안에서 너희 부모에게 순종하라 이것이 옳으니라 네 아버지와 어머니를 공경하라 이것은 약속이 있는 첫 계명이니 이로써 네가 잘되고 땅에서 장수하리라”(엡 6:1-3).

부모님을 공경하는 것은 당연한 일입니다. 부모 공경은 옳은 일입니다. 부모 공경은 인간의 도리입니다. 하지만 부모님을 공경하는 사람이 많지 않기 때문에 하나님이 계명으로 부모 공경을 명하셨습니다. 또한 다른 계명과 달리 부모님을 공경하는 사람에게는 형통의 복과 장수의 복을 약속해 주셨습니다(신 5:16). 하나님이 우리에게 계명을 주신 이유는 우리를 힘들게 하기 위함이 아닙니다. 우리의 행복을 위해서입니다. “내가 오늘 네 행복을 위하여 네게 명하는 여호와의 명령과 규례를 지킬 것이 아니냐”(신 10:13). 그렇다면 왜 부모님을 공경하면 복을 받고 행복한 삶을 살게 되는 것일까요? 부모 공경 속에 숨겨진 축복의 비밀은 무엇일까요?

첫째, 부모 공경 속에 원천을 소중히 여기는 지혜가 담겨 있습니다. 지혜란 근원을 살피는 것입니다. 무엇이든 시작이 있습니다. 부모님은 우리 생명의 시작입니다. 우리 존재의 근본입니다. 부모님은 우리 생명의 뿌리가 되십니다. 우리는 부모님을 통해 태어났습니다. 부모님이 아니면 우리는 이 세상에 존재할 수 없습니다. 부모님은 우리 존재의 원인이십니다. 부모님을 공경하는 사람은 부모님을 허락해 주신 하나님을 공경할 줄 압니다. 그 이유는 하나님은 만물의 원천이 되시기 때문입니다. 지혜란 원천을 알고, 원천을 소중히 여기고, 원천을 가까이하는 것입니다. 거듭 원천으로 돌아가 원천에 머무는 것이 지혜입니다. 에스겔 47장에 보면 성전 문지방에서 생수가 흘러나옵니다. 그 생수가 나중에 강이 되어 바다로 흘러갑니다. 그 강이 흐르는 곳마다 치유와 회복의 역사가 나타납니다. 생수가 흐르는 곳에서 자라는 나무는 풍성한 열매를 맺게 됩니다.

신약에서 생수의 근원이 되는 성전은 예수님이십니다. 주님의 몸된 교회입니다. 지혜로운 사람은 생수의 근원되시는 예수님을 가까이합니다. 주님의 몸된 교회를 가까이합니다. 주님의 몸된 교회에서 흘러나오는 생수는 세 가지입니다. 성령의 생수, 말씀의 생수, 그리고 보혈의 생수입니다. 큰 강과 바다는 저절로 된 것이 아닙니다. 원천에서 출발된 것입니다. 그와 같이 부모님을 공경하는 사람은 원천을 소중히 여기는 까닭에 복을 받게 됩니다. 물을 구하지 말고 샘을 구하십시오. 물을 구하지 말고 원천에 머무십시오. 그때 우리는 지속적으로 생수를 공급받게 됩니다.

둘째, 부모 공경 속에 존중의 지혜가 담겨 있습니다. 존중은 하나님의 원리이며 하나님의 지혜입니다. 하나님은 그를 존중히 여기는 사람을 존중히 여기십니다. 하나님은 그를 멸시하는 사람을 멸시하십니다. “나를 존중히 여기는 자를 내가 존중히 여기고 나를 멸시하는 자를 내가 경멸하리라”(삼상 2:30하). 존중이란 존귀히 여기는 것입니다. 가치 있게 여기는 것입니다. 반면에 경멸이란 무가치하게 여기는 것입니다. 함부로 대하는 것입니다. 존중 속에 사랑의 비밀이 담겨 있습니다. 사랑한다는 것은 아낀다는 것입니다. 사랑은 소중히 여기는 것입니다. 정말 누군가를 사랑하거나 어떤 것을 사랑하면 함부로 대하지 않습니다. 조심스럽게 대하고 소중히 대합니다. 부모 공경을 통해 존중하는 법을 배운 사람은 만나는 사람을 존중하고, 자신에게 맡겨진 일을 소중히 여깁니다. 또한 다른 사람들이 하는 일도 존중하게 됩니다. 사탄의 문화는 경멸과 멸시의 문화입니다. 폭력의 문화입니다. 반면에 하나님의 문화는 존경과 존귀의 문화입니다. 온유의 문화입니다. 인생은 농작의 법칙에 따라 움직입니다. 존중을 심으면 존중을 거둡니다.

셋째, 부모 공경 속에 순종의 지혜가 담겨 있습니다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지께 순종하셨습니다. 또한 육신의 부모님께 순종하셨습니다(눅 2:51). 순종은 축복의 비밀입니다. 하나님은 순종하는 사람들에게 놀라운 축복을 부어 주시는 것을 보게 됩니다. 아브라함이 순종할 때 큰 복을 약속해 주십니다(창 22:16-18). 순종 속에 사랑이 담겨 있습니다. 우리는 사랑하는 대상에게 순종합니다. 순종 속에 겸손이 담겨 있습니다. 겸손한 사람은 순종합니다. 순종 속에 온유한 성품이 담겨 있습니다. 성경에서 불순종하는 사람의 모습은 교만합니다. 완고합니다. 반면에 순종하는 사람은 온유합니다. 하나님은 존중, 순종, 사랑, 겸손, 그리고 온유의 성품 속에 축복과 행복을 담아 두셨습니다. 부모 공경을 통해 하나님이 예비하신 놀라운 축복을 누리시길 빕니다.

Don’t Look for Water, But Look for a Spring!

God promised amazing blessings to children who honor their parents. Of the Ten Commandments, honoring one’s parents is the fifth commandment (Exodus 20:12). The Ten Commandments are divided into commandments for God and commandments for people. The first four commandments are for God. The fifth to the tenth commandments are for how to treat others. The first commandment for how to treat others is to honor one’s parents. The apostle Paul writes about honoring one’s parents which is one of the fruits of being filled by the Holy Spirit. “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother—which is the first commandment with a promise— that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth” (Ephesians 6:1–3).

It is natural to honor your parents. Honoring your parents is the right thing to do. Honoring one’s parents is the duty of human beings. However, not many people honor their parents, so God gave a command to honor one’s parents. Also, unlike other commandments, God promises the blessings of prosperity and longevity to those who honor their parents (Deuteronomy 5:16). The reason God gave us this commandment is not to make things difficult for us. It is for our happiness. “And to observe the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today is for your own good? ” (Deuteronomy 10:13). So, why does honoring your parents lead to a blessed and happy life? What is the secret of the blessings hidden in the honoring one’s parents?

First, the wisdom of valuing the source is contained in honoring one’s parents. Wisdom is to look at the source. Everything has a beginning. Our parents are the beginning of our lives. They are the basis of our existence. Parents are the root of our lives. We were born through our parents. We cannot exist in this world without our parents. Parents are the cause of our existence. Those who honor their parents know how to honor God, who gave us our parents. The reason is that God is the origin of all things. Wisdom is knowing the source, valuing the source, and getting near to the source. It is wise to return and stay at the source, again and again. In Ezekiel chapter 47, living water flows from the threshold of the temple. The living water later becomes a river and flows into the sea. Wherever the river flows, the work of healing and restoration appears. Trees that grow where living water flows will produce abundant fruit.

The temple that is the source of living water in the New Testament is Jesus. It is the church – the body of the Lord. A wise person draws close to Jesus, who is the source of living water. He gets closer to the church which is the body of the Lord. There are three kinds of living water that flows out of the church which is the body of the Lord. They are the living water of the Holy Spirit, the living water of the Word, and the living water of the precious blood of Jesus. The big rivers and seas did not come by themselves. They started from the source. Those who honor their parents are blessed because they value the source. Don't ask for water, but ask for the spring. Do not seek water but stay at the source. Then, we will continue to be supplied with living water.

Second, the wisdom of honor is contained in honoring one’s parents. Honor is God's principle and God's wisdom. God honors those who honor Him. God despises those who despise Him. “Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained” (1 Samuel 2:30b). Honoring is to cherish. It is to value. On the other hand, despising is to consider things worthless. It is to treat them carelessly. The secret of love is contained in honor. To love is to care. Love is to cherish. If you really love someone or something, you don't treat them carelessly. You treat them with care and with respect. Those who learn how to honor through honoring their parents will honor those they meet and value the work entrusted to them. They also respect what others do. Satanic culture is a culture of contempt and despise. It's a culture of violence. On the other hand, God's culture is a culture of respect and honor. It is a culture of gentleness. Life moves according to the laws of farming. When you plant honor, you will reap honor.

Third, the wisdom of obedience is contained in honoring one’s parents. Jesus obeyed his Heavenly Father. He also obeyed his physical parents (Luke 2:51). Obedience is the secret of blessing. We see that God poured out amazing blessings on those who obeyed. When Abraham obeyed, God promised him great blessings (Genesis 22:16-18). Love is contained in obedience. We obey our loved ones. Humility is contained in obedience. The humble person obeys. A meek character is contained in obedience. The disobedient person in the Bible is proud. He is stubborn. On the other hand, those who obey are meek. God has placed blessings and happiness in the characteristics of honor, obedience, love, humility, and meekness. May you enjoy the wonderful blessings which God has prepared through honoring your parents.
