[목회서신] 변화는 성장에 있습니다. | Change Lies in Growth.

살아 있다는 것은 변화한다는 것입니다. 무덤은 변화하지 않습니다. 하지만 살아 있는 생명체는 변화합니다. 로버트 하퍼 목사님은 “당신이 변화를 거부하는 순간이 당신의 죽음이 시작되는 순간이다.”고 말했습니다. 변화는 성장을 의미합니다. 변화가 중요한 까닭은 변화를 통해 성장할 수 있기 때문입니다. 변화하는 시대에 변화하지 않으면 도태(淘汰)하게 됩니다. 게일 쉬이는 “변화하지 않으면 성장할 수 없다. 성장하지 않으면 진정으로 사는 것이 아니다.”고 말했습니다.

우리는 이전에 한 번도 겪어보지 못한 변화 속에 있습니다. 어느 때보다 변화를 자각해야 할 때입니다. 많은 분들이 어려움에 직면해 있습니다. 하지만 현실이 어렵다고 해서 낙심해서는 안 됩니다. 자포자기해서도 안 됩니다. 하나님의 사람들은 역전의 하나님을 믿습니다. 우리 인생의 마지막은 하나님이 섭리하시고 주관하십니다. 죽음의 수용소에서 살아남아 수많은 사람들에게 영감을 준 빅터 프랭클의 말을 기억하십시오. “영화는 수천 개의 장면으로 이뤄져 있고 각각의 장면에 다 뜻이 있고 의미가 있지만, 영화의 전체적 의미는 마지막 장면이 나오기 전까지 드러나지 않는다. 삶도 마찬가지가 아닐까 한다.”

새해를 맞이한 우리에게 하나님이 원하시는 것은 변화입니다. 우리는 변화를 원하면서도 변화를 두려워하는 존재입니다. 다른 사람들에게 변화를 요구하면서, 정작 자신의 변화는 뒤로 미룰 때가 많습니다. 저는 수많은 변화를 통해 성장을 거듭했습니다. 경험을 통해 저는 변화가 얼마나 힘들고 불편한 일인지를 압니다. 하지만 변화하지 않으면 성장할 수 없습니다. C. S. 루이스는 “달걀이 새로 변화하는 것은 어려울지도 모른다. 달걀이 달걀인 채로 나는 법을 배우는 것은 조금 더 어려울지도 모른다. 우리는 지금 달걀과 같다. 그리고 당신은 그냥 계속 평범하고 상하지 않은 달걀로 있을 수는 없다. 우리는 부화하거나 상할 수밖에 없다.”고 말했습니다. 그렇다면 우리는 질문하게 됩니다. 변화는 어떻게 일어나는 것일까요?

변화는 생각에서 시작됩니다. 생각이 모든 변화의 근원입니다. 생각이 변화되면 언어가 변화됩니다. 언어가 변화되면 행동이 변화됩니다. 행동이 변화되면 습관이 변화됩니다. 습관이 변화되면 성품이 변화됩니다. 성품이 변화되면 우리 미래가 변화됩니다. 그렇다면 생각은 어떻게 변화될 수 있을까요? 새로운 접촉을 통해 생각이 변화될 수 있습니다. 새로운 접촉은 어떻게 일어날 수 있을까요? 우리가 읽는 것과 우리가 만나는 사람들을 통해 새로운 접촉이 일어나게 됩니다. 무엇보다 성경과의 접촉이 중요합니다. 하나님의 말씀을 읽을 때 우리 마음은 새로워집니다. 우리 마음이 새로워질 때 변화가 일어납니다. 성경은 “너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별하도록 하라”(롬 12:2)고 말씀합니다. 하나님은 말씀을 통해 우리를 새롭게 하십니다. 우리가 성경을 읽을 때 하나님의 말씀이 우리 생각을 자극합니다. 생각이 자극받을 때 생각이 새롭게 태어납니다. 생각이 새롭게 태어날 때 새로운 깨달음이 임하게 됩니다. 우리는 새로운 깨달음을 통해 변화와 성장의 열매를 맺게 됩니다.

변화는 용기 있는 결단을 통해 이루어집니다. 변화를 생각한다고 변화되는 것이 아닙니다. 변화를 위해서는 선택하고 결단하고 행동에 옮겨야 합니다. 생각만 가지고는 안 됩니다. 변화가 중요하다고 말하는 것만으로도 안 됩니다. 실천에 옮겨야 합니다. 올바른 변화를 위해 변화를 추구할 때 잠시 실패를 맛볼 수 있습니다. 그것은 실패가 아닙니다. 더 나은 변화를 위한 성장통입니다.

변화를 위해서는 바울처럼 날마다 죽고 새롭게 태어나야 합니다. 변화는 역설적이며 극적입니다. 바울은 “나는 날마다 죽노라”(고전 15:31)고 말했습니다. 그는 날마다 옛사람을 벗어 버리고(골 3:9) 새 사람을 입었습니다(엡 4:24). 예수님은 “우리에게 뱀 같이 지혜롭고 비둘기 같이 순결하라”(마 10:16)고 말씀하십니다. 뱀에게 배우는 지혜는 허물을 벗을 줄 아는 지혜입니다. 뱀의 몸은 자라는데, 허물은 자라지 않습니다. 뱀은 허물을 벗지 못하면 몸이 짓눌려 죽습니다. 허물을 벗어야 성장할 수 있습니다. 우리가 벗어야 할 허물은 우리의 옛사람입니다. 우리는 옛사람을 날마다 벗어버리고 새사람을 입어야 합니다. 그때 우리는 새로운 변화를 경험하게 됩니다.

우리는 결코 변하지 않는 것을 지키기 위해 변화해야 합니다(고전 13:13). 은혜의 복음은 변하지 않습니다. 우리는 변하지 않는 복음을 지키고 전하기 위해 변화되어야 합니다. 변화의 기술 중의 하나는 작은 변화를 시도해 보는 것입니다. 중국의 현인은 “한 발짝이 쌓이지 않으면 천 리 길을 갈 수 없고, 작은 흐름이 쌓이지 않으면 강과 바다가 이뤄질 수 없다.”고 말했습니다. 새해에 새로운 변화를 시도함으로 더욱 성장하시길 빕니다.

Change Lies in Growth

To be alive is to change. There is no change in the grave. But living things change. Pastor Robert Harper said, "The moment you resist change is the moment your death begins." Change means growth. Change is important because change can lead to growth. If you do not change in a changing era, you will fall behind. Gail Sheehy said, “If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we aren't really living.”

We are in a changing time that we have never seen before. Now is the time to be aware of change more than ever. Many people are facing difficulties. But don't be discouraged just because the reality is difficult. Do not be in despair. People of God believe in a God of reversal. God rules and is provident over the way our lives will end. Remember the words of Victor Frankl, who survived the death camp and inspired millions of people. “(A Movie) consists of thousands upon thousands of individual pictures, and each of them makes sense and carries a meaning, yet the meaning of the whole film cannot be seen before its last sequence is shown. However, we cannot understand the whole film without having first understood each of its components, each of the individual pictures. Isn’t it the same with life?”

What God wants us to do in the new year is change. We want change, but we are afraid of it. While asking others to change, we often delay in our own change. I have grown through numerous changes. From experience, I know how difficult and inconvenient change can be. But if you don't change, you cannot grow. C. S. Lewis said, “It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for a bird to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.” Then we ask questions. How does change happen?

Change starts with our thoughts. Thoughts are the source of all change. When thoughts change, language changes. When language changes, behavior changes. When behavior changes, habits change. When habits change, character changes. When our character changes, our future changes. So how can we change our thinking? New contacts can change our thinking. How can new contact happen? New contacts arise through what we read and through the people we meet. Above all else, contact with the Bible is important. When we read the Word of God, our hearts are renewed. Change happens when our minds are renewed. The Bible says, ““Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2). God renews us through His Word. When we read the Bible, the Word of God stimulates our thoughts. When a thought is stimulated, a new thought is born. When a new thought is born, a new understanding comes. We bear the fruits of change and growth through new understanding.

Change comes through courageous decisions. Thinking about change does not make you change. Change requires choices, decisions, and action. Don't just think about it. It's not enough just to say that change is important. It must be put into practice. When you seek change for the right change, you might taste failure for a while. But it is not failure. They are growing pains for better change.

In order to change, we must die and be born anew every day like Paul. Change is paradoxical and dramatic. Paul said, “I die every day” (1 Corinthians 15:31). Every day he put off the old man (Colossians 3:9) and put on the new man (Ephesians 4:24). Jesus says, “Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16). The wisdom we learn from snakes is the wisdom to shed their skins. A snake's body grows, but its skin does not. If the snake does not shed its skin, its body will be crushed to death. We can grow only when we get rid of our skins. The skins we must put off is our old self. We must put off the old self every day and put on the new self. Then we will experience new change.

We must change to keep the things that never change (1 Corinthians 13:13). The gospel of grace does not change. We must change in order to keep it and preach the unchanging gospel. One of the skills of change is to try small changes. A Chinese sage said, “Thus if you do not accumulate little steps, you will not have the means to journey a thousand li(miles), and if you do not pile up small streams, you will have no way to fill a river or a sea." I hope you will grow even more by trying new changes in this new year.
