[목회서신] 사랑의 세 가지 비밀 | Three Secrets of Love

사랑한다는 것은 아름다운 것입니다. 고귀한 것입니다. 인간은 사랑하고 사랑을 받을 때 행복합니다. 프랑스의 작가이며 시인인 빅토르 위고는 “삶의 최상의 행복은 자신이 사랑을 받고 있다는 확신이다.”라고 말했습니다. 헨리 나우웬은 기도의 핵심을 하나님의 사랑의 음성을 듣는 데 있다고 말합니다. “기도란 당신을 ‘내 사랑하는 딸’, ‘내 사랑하는 아들,’ ‘내 사랑하는 자녀’라 부르시는 그분의 음성을 듣는 것이다. 기도란 그 음성을 내 존재의 중심에서, 내면에서 듣고, 그 음성이 내 전 존재에 울려 퍼지게 하는 것이다. ‘나는 누구인가?’ ‘나는 사랑받는 존재다.’”(헨리 나우웬, 『헨리 나우웬의 공동체』, 두란노, 30-31쪽).

우리는 날마다 세상에서 말하는 소리를 듣고 삽니다. 그것은 “너는 부족하다”라는 소리입니다. “너는 아직 멀었다”라는 소리입니다. 그 소리는 율법의 소리와 같습니다. 율법은 우리가 아무리 노력해도 “부족하다”라고 말합니다. 반면에 복음은 우리를 무조건적으로 사랑합니다. 하나님의 사랑 때문에 부족함이 없다고 말해줍니다. 하나님은 우리 각자를 상품이 아닌 걸작(傑作, masterpiece)으로 만드셨다고 말해줍니다(엡 2:10). 세상은 서로를 비교하게 만들어 교만하거나 또한 비참하게 만듭니다. 하나님이 만드신 불후의 걸작품을 상품으로 전락시킵니다.

우리는 하나님의 사랑에 뿌리를 내릴 때 가장 안전합니다. “너희가 사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어져서”(엡 3:17하). 하나님의 사랑을 알고 그 사랑의 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이를 깨달을 때 충만함을 경험하게 됩니다(엡 3:18-19). 우리 삶은 하나님의 사랑을 깨닫고, 그 사랑을 경험하고, 그 사랑을 다른 사람과 나눌 때 풍성해집니다. 저는 하나님의 풍성한 사랑 가운데 세 가지 비밀을 나누고 싶습니다.

첫째, 사랑은 주는 것입니다(Give). 누군가를 진정으로 사랑하면 가장 소중한 것을 주게 됩니다. 옥합을 깨뜨린 여인은 예수님을 사랑한 까닭에 매우 값진 향유 곧 순전한 나드 한 옥합을 아낌없이 깨뜨려 예수님의 머리에 부어드렸습니다(막 14:3). 하나님의 사랑은 주는 사랑입니다. 하나님 아버지는 우리를 사랑하셔서 독생자를 주셨습니다. “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니”(요 3:16상). “자기 아들을 아끼지 아니하시고 우리 모든 사람을 위하여 내주신 이가 어찌 그 아들과 함께 모든 것을 우리에게 주시지 아니하겠느냐”(롬 8:32). 사랑의 비밀은 주는 데 있습니다. 사랑의 풍성함은 움켜쥐는 것이 아니라 두 손을 펴서 사랑을 베푸는 데 있습니다.

주는 것은 씨앗을 심는 것과 같습니다. 밀알 하나가 완전히 자라 밀 이삭이 되면 30-50배의 열매를 맺게 됩니다. 한 조각의 감자를 심으면 60개의 감자를 얻는다고 합니다. 사과 씨앗을 심으면 사과나무가 되어 매년 풍성한 사과를 선물해 줍니다. 주는 것은 씨앗을 심는 것 같아 우리 삶을 더욱 풍성하게 만들어 줍니다.

둘째, 사랑은 용서하는 것입니다(Forgive). 사랑은 주는 것뿐만 아니라 용서해 주는 것입니다. 용서란 쉬운 것이 아닙니다. 우리를 괴롭히고, 우리의 소중한 것을 빼앗아 간 사람들을 용서한다는 것은 결코 쉬운 것이 아닙니다. 하지만 하나님은 우리가 용서의 사랑을 베풀기를 원하십니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 자신을 못 박은 사람들을 용서해 주셨습니다(눅 23:34). 예수님은 우리 죄를 대신 담당하시고 우리를 용서해 주시기 위해 오셨습니다(사 53:6; 마 1:21). 용서 받고 용서를 베푸는 것은 위대한 일입니다. 하나님은 우리가 용서의 사람이 되길 원하십니다. 그 이유는 누군가를 미워하고 원한을 품고 복수하려는 마음은 우리의 행복을 파괴하기 때문입니다. 우리는 용서함으로 자유함에 이를 수 있습니다. 우리를 괴롭힌 사람들을 잊을 수 있는 길은 그들을 용서할 때 가능합니다. 용서란 과거를 떠나보내는 것입니다. 용서란 새로운 미래를 열어주는 것입니다.

셋째, 사랑은 상대방의 죄와 허물을 잊어주는 것입니다(Forget). 하나님의 사랑은 우리 죄와 허물을 용서하실 뿐 아니라 다시는 기억하지 않으시는 것입니다. “내가 그들의 불의를 긍휼히 여기고 그들의 죄를 다시 기억하지 아니하리라 하셨느니라”(히 8:12). 하나님은 우리 죄를 용서하신 후에는 다시 기억하지 않으십니다. 우리 과거의 죄와 우리를 불리하게 만드는 죄 문서를 십자가에서 완전히 도말해 버리셨습니다(골 2:13-14). 인류가 만드는 가장 위대한 발명품 중의 하나는 지우개입니다. 잘못 쓴 것을 지울 수 있는 지우개는 최대의 발명품입니다. 컴퓨터의 기능 가운데 가장 좋은 기능은 “Delete(삭제하다)”입니다. 우리도 하나님의 사랑을 따라 다른 사람을 용서할 뿐만 아니라 죄를 잊어주는 사랑을 베푸는 훈련을 해야 합니다. 사랑은 훈련입니다. 저절로 자라는 것은 잡초뿐입니다. 참된 사랑은 정원을 가꾸듯이 날마다 가꾸어야 합니다. 그때 우리의 삶은 풍성해집니다. 우리는 “하나님의 사랑을 받은 자”(마 3:17)입니다. 그러므로 우리도 성령님 안에서 하나님의 사랑을 힘입어 이웃을 사랑하도록 합시다(롬 5:5).

Three Secrets of Love

To love is a beautiful thing. It is noble. Humans are happy when they love and are loved. The French writer and poet Victor Hugo said, "The greatest happiness in life is the conviction that you are loved." Henri Nouwen says that the essence of prayer is to hear the voice of God's love. "To pray is to listen to the One who calls you 'my beloved daughter,' 'my beloved son,' 'my beloved child.' To pray is to let that voice speak to the center of your being, to your guts, and let that voice resound in your whole being. Who am I? I am the beloved." (Henri Nouwen, Community).

Every day we live by hearing the voices of the world. It is the sound of "you are not enough." "You are still far away" is the sound. Its sound is like the sound of the Law. The Law says that no matter how hard we try, "it is not enough." The gospel, on the other hand, loves us unconditionally. It tells us that nothing is lacking because of God's love. It tells us that God has made each of us a (傑作) masterpiece, not a commodity (Ephesians 2:10). On the other hand, the world makes us compare each other, making us proud or miserable. It turns the immortal masterpiece created by God into a commodity.

We are safest when we are rooted in God's love. "Being rooted and established in love." (Ephesians 3:17b). When we know God's love and realize that love's breadth, length, height, and depth, we experience the fullness (Ephesians 3:18-19). Our lives are enriched when we recognize God's love, an experience that love, and share that love with others. I would like to share three secrets of God's abundant love.

First, love is to give. When you truly love someone, you give them the most precious thing. Because she loved Jesus, the woman who broke the alabaster jar of pure nard, a precious perfume, and poured it on Jesus' head (Mark 14:3). God's love is giving love. God the Father loves us so much that He gave His only begotten Son. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son." (John 3:16a). "He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?" (Romans 8:32). The secret of love is in giving. The riches of love are not grasping but giving love with outstretched hands.

Giving is like planting seeds. When a grain of wheat is fully grown and becomes a head of grain, it produces 30-50 times more fruit. It is said that planting one potato yields 60 potatoes. If you plant an apple seed, it becomes an apple tree and presents abundant apples every year. Giving is like planting a seed, which enriches our lives.

Second, love is to forgive. Love is not only about giving but also forgiving. Forgiveness is not easy. Forgiving those who torment us and take away what we value is never easy. But God wants us to show forgiveness. Jesus forgave those who crucified Him (Luke 23:34). Jesus came to take our sins and forgive us (Isaiah 53:6; Matthew 1:21). It is a great thing to be forgiven and to forgive. God wants us to be people of forgiveness. The reason is that hating someone, holding a grudge, and wanting revenge to destroy our happiness. We can achieve freedom through forgiveness. We can only forget those who bullied us when we forgive them. Forgiveness is letting go of the past. Forgiveness opens up a new future.

Third, love is to forget the other person's sins and faults. God's love is not only to forgive our sins and transgressions but to remember them no more. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." (Hebrews 8:12). After God forgives our sins, He does not remember them again. He completely blotted out the sins of our past and the documents of sin that put us at a disadvantage (Colossians 2:13-14). One of humankind's greatest inventions is the eraser. The eraser that can erase wrong writing is the greatest invention. One of the best features of the computer is the "Delete" key. Following God's love, we, too, need to train ourselves to forgive others and give love that forgets others' sins. Love is training. The only thing that grows on its own is weeds. True love needs to be nurtured daily, just like a garden. Then our lives will be enriched. We are loved by God (Matthew 3:17). Therefore, let us also love our neighbor through the love of God in the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5).
