[목회서신] 아직 두드려 보지 않은 문이 남아 있습니다. | There Is Still a Door You Have Not Knocked On

     이번 주간에 독일 시인 라이너 쿤체의 짧은 시를 만났습니다. 시의 제목은 조금 충격적입니다. 《자살》입니다. “모든 문 가운데 마지막 문. 그러나 아직 모든 문을 다 두드려 보지는 않았다.” 불과 몇 줄밖에 되지 않는 시입니다. 그러나 이 짧은 시에는 절망을 넘어 생명을 붙들게 하는 깊은 울림과 따뜻한 희망이 담겨 있습니다. 이 시는 마지막 문 앞에 서 있다고 느끼는 사람에게 잠시 멈추어 생각해 보라고 권합니다. 지금 보이는 문이 마지막 문처럼 느껴질지라도, 아직 두드려 보지 않은 문이 남아 있다는 것입니다. 우리에게는 아직 만나지 못한 사람이 있습니다. 아직 받아 보지 못한 도움이 있습니다. 아직 경험하지 못한 내일이 있습니다.

절망은 우리의 시야를 좁게 만듭니다. 눈앞의 한 문이 닫히면 모든 문이 닫혔다고 생각하게 만듭니다. 그러나 한 문이 닫혔다고 모든 가능성이 사라진 것은 아닙니다. 우리가 발견하지 못했을 뿐, 새로운 길이 남아 있을 수 있습니다. 이 짧은 시는 삶의 마지막 결론을 너무 서둘러 내리지 말라고 조용히 일깨워 줍니다. 조금 더 기다리고, 조금 더 문을 두드리고, 조금 더 살아 내라고 권합니다. 우리는 아직 모든 문을 두드려 보지 않았기 때문입니다.

홍해 앞에 선 이스라엘 백성은 절망했습니다. 앞에는 홍해가 가로막고 있었고, 뒤에서는 바로의 군대가 추격해 오고 있었습니다. 아무도 홍해 가운데 길이 있으리라고 생각하지 못했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 홍해 속에 감추어진 길을 보셨습니다. 우리가 길을 보지 못한다고 길이 없는 것은 아닙니다. 우리가 문을 발견하지 못한다고 문이 없는 것도 아닙니다. 하나님이 길을 만드시면 바다도 길이 됩니다. 하나님이 문을 여시면 막힌 곳도 출구가 됩니다.

인생은 수많은 문을 통과하는 여행입니다. 우리는 태어나면서 생명의 문을 엽니다. 배움의 문을 엽니다. 사랑의 문을 엽니다. 일터의 문을 엽니다. 사명의 문을 엽니다. 때로는 실패의 문도 엽니다. 고난의 문도 엽니다. 눈물의 문도 엽니다. 처음에는 왜 이런 문을 지나야 하는지 이해할 수 없습니다. 그러나 시간이 흐른 뒤에 깨닫습니다. 실패의 문을 지나며 겸손을 배웠습니다. 눈물의 문을 지나며 기도를 배웠습니다. 상실의 문을 지나며 하나님의 위로를 만났습니다.

하나님은 우리가 통과한 모든 문을 통해 우리를 더 깊은 사람으로 빚어 오셨습니다. 하지만 살다 보면 정말 마지막 문 앞에 선 것 같은 순간이 찾아옵니다. 병이 찾아왔을 때입니다. 사랑하는 사람과 이별했을 때입니다. 소중히 여기던 것을 잃었을 때입니다. 오랫동안 품었던 꿈이 무너졌을 때입니다. 나이가 들어 더 이상 새로운 문이 열리지 않을 것처럼 느껴질 때입니다. 그때 우리 마음에 어두운 음성이 들려옵니다. “이제 끝이다. 아무 문도 남아 있지 않다.” 그러나 믿음은 우리에게 말합니다. “아직 끝이 아니다. 하나님이 준비하신 미래가 남아 있다.”

우리가 보지 못하는 동안에도 하나님은 다음 문을 준비하십니다. 하나님은 우리보다 먼저 그 문 앞에 서 계십니다. 그러므로 포기하지 마십시오. 조금 더 견디십시오. 견딘다는 것은 아무 도움도 받지 않고 혼자 버티는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께 도움을 구하는 것입니다. 사랑하는 사람에게 마음을 여는 것입니다. 믿음의 가족과 함께 아픔을 나누는 것입니다. 필요할 때는 전문적인 도움의 손길을 붙드는 것입니다.

절망은 우리를 고립시키지만, 소망은 우리로 하여금 손을 내밀게 합니다. 혼자 감당하기 어려운 고통 가운데 있다면 혼자 머물지 마십시오. 누군가에게 마음을 여십시오. 도움을 청하는 것은 약함이 아닙니다. 생명을 지키는 용기입니다. 무엇보다 우리에게는 예수님이 계십니다. 예수님은 문이십니다. “내가 문이니 누구든지 나로 말미암아 들어가면 구원을 받고 또는 들어가며 나오며 꼴을 얻으리라”(요 10:9). 모든 문이 닫힌 것 같아도 우리를 기다리는 문이 있습니다. 그 문은 예수님이십니다. 예수님은 은혜의 문이십니다. 회복의 문이십니다. 생명의 문이십니다.

성경은 닫힌 문이 새로운 문으로 바뀐 이야기로 가득합니다. 요셉에게 감옥은 끝이 아니라 총리의 자리로 나아가는 문이었습니다. 모세에게 광야는 끝이 아니라 부르심의 문이었습니다. 다윗에게 아둘람 굴은 끝이 아니라 왕의 길로 들어서는 문이었습니다. 제자들에게 십자가는 끝이 아니라 부활의 문이었습니다. 하나님은 언제나 마지막처럼 보이는 자리에서 새로운 역사를 시작하셨습니다. 눈앞의 닫힌 문보다 하나님의 약속을 바라보십시오.

오늘 닫힌 문이 내일도 닫혀 있으리라는 법은 없습니다. 닫힌 문 앞에서 너무 빨리 인생의 결론을 내리지 마십시오. 아직 경험하지 못한 은혜가 있습니다. 아직 하나님이 쓰실 이야기가 남아 있습니다. 무엇보다 우리에게는 문이신 예수님이 계십니다. 그분 안에는 언제나 새로운 은혜가 있습니다. 새로운 소망이 있습니다. 새로운 시작이 있습니다. 그러므로 오늘도 걸음을 멈추지 마십시오. 문이신 예수님을 바라보십시오. 아직 열어 보지 않은 문이 남아 있습니다.

There Is Still a Door You Have Not Knocked On

   This week I came across a short poem by the German poet Reiner Kunze. Its title is startling: Suicide. The poem reads: “The last door of all. But no one has yet knocked on them all.” It is only a few lines long. Yet within those few words is a profound message that leads us beyond despair and invites us to hold on to life with hope. The poem gently asks those who feel they are standing before the last door to pause and think for a moment. Even if the door before us appears to be the last one, there are still doors we have not yet knocked on. There are still people we have not yet met, help we have not yet received, and tomorrows we have not yet experienced.

Despair narrows our vision. When one door closes, it convinces us that every door has closed. But the closing of one door does not mean every possibility has disappeared. There may still be another path we have not yet discovered. This brief poem quietly reminds us not to reach life's final conclusion too quickly. Wait a little longer. Knock on one more door. Live one more day. We have not yet knocked on every door.

The Israelites despaired when they stood before the Red Sea. The sea blocked their way, and Pharaoh's army was closing in behind them. No one imagined there could be a path through the sea. But God saw the hidden way. Just because we cannot see a path does not mean there isn't one. Just because we have not found the door does not mean it does not exist. When God makes a way, even the sea becomes a road. When God opens a door, even what seems blocked becomes an exit.

Life is a journey through many doors. We begin by entering the door of life. We open the door of learning, the door of love, the door of work, and the door of mission. At times we also pass through the door of failure, the door of suffering, and the door of tears. At first we do not understand why we must walk through such doors. But with time we discover that the door of failure taught us humility. The door of tears taught us how to pray. The door of loss led us to experience the comfort of God.

Through every door we have passed, God has been shaping us into deeper and wiser people. Yet there are moments when it truly feels as though we are standing before the final door. When illness comes. When we lose someone we love. When something precious is taken away. When a dream we have cherished for years collapses. When age makes us feel as though no new doors will ever open again. In those moments a dark voice whispers, "This is the end. There are no doors left." But faith tells us something different: "This is not the end. God still has a future prepared for you."

Even when we cannot see it, God is preparing the next door. He is already standing there before we arrive. So do not give up. Endure a little longer. Enduring does not mean struggling alone without help. It means asking God for help. It means opening your heart to someone who loves you. It means sharing your pain with your family of faith. And when needed, it means receiving the care of trained professionals.

Despair isolates us, but hope reaches out. If you are carrying a burden too heavy to bear alone, do not remain alone. Open your heart to someone. Asking for help is not weakness; it is the courage to protect the gift of life. Above all, we have Jesus. Jesus is the Door. "I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture" (John 10:9). Even when every other door seems closed, one door is still waiting for us. That door is Jesus Christ. He is the Door of Grace, the Door of Restoration, and the Door of Life.

The Bible is filled with stories of closed doors becoming new beginnings. For Joseph, prison was not the end but the door to the palace. For Moses, the wilderness was not the end but the door to his calling. For David, the cave of Adullam was not the end but the doorway to the throne. For the disciples, the cross was not the end but the door to the resurrection. God has always begun a new work where everything seemed finished. So fix your eyes not on the closed door before you, but on the promises of God.

There is no guarantee that the door closed today will still be closed tomorrow. Do not reach the final verdict on your life too quickly while standing before a closed door. There is grace you have not yet experienced. There is still a story God intends to write through your life. Most of all, we have Jesus, who is the Door. In Him there is always fresh grace, new hope, and a new beginning. So do not stop walking today. Keep your eyes on Jesus, the Door. There is still a door you have not yet opened.
