[목회서신] 지혜를 나누는 즐거움 | The Joy of Sharing Wisdom

저는 하나님의 지혜를 보배처럼 여깁니다. 하나님의 은혜 없이 살아갈 수 없는 것처럼 하나님의 지혜 없이 살아가는 것은 힘든 일입니다. 우리는 날마다 하나님께 은혜를 구해야 합니다. 하나님의 은혜를 받아야 풍성한 삶을 살 수 있습니다. 하나님의 은혜가 임할 때 놀라운 축복이 함께 합니다. 하나님의 축복이 함께 할 때 닫혔던 문이 열립니다. 오랫동안 풀지 못했던 문제가 풀리게 됩니다. 하나님의 축복이 함께 할 때 복된 만남을 갖게 됩니다. 요셉에게 하나님의 은혜가 함께할 때 그는 복된 만남을 갖게 됩니다. 복된 만남을 통해 새 길이 열리게 됩니다. 복된 만남을 통해 닫혔던 옥문이 열리고 국무총리가 되어 만민의 생명을 살리게 됩니다.

은혜와 함께 날마다 구해야 할 것이 하나님의 지혜입니다. 하나님은 기도하는 사람에게 지혜를 허락해 주십니다. “너희 중에 누구든지 지혜가 부족하거든 모든 사람에게 후히 주시고 꾸짖지 아니하시는 하나님께 구하라 그리하면 주시리라”(약 1:5). 지혜를 구하는 사람이 되기 위해서는 지혜의 중요성을 절실하게 깨달아야 합니다. 지혜의 가치를 아는 사람만이 지혜를 얻기 위해 기도하게 됩니다. 잠언은 지혜서입니다. 잠언은 지혜를 얻은 사람이 복이 있다고 말씀합니다. “지혜를 얻은 자와 명철을 얻은 자는 복이 있나니 이는 지혜를 얻는 것이 은을 얻는 것보다 낫고 그 이익이 정금보다 나음이니라 지혜는 진주보다 귀하니 네가 사모하는 모든 것으로도 이에 비교할 수 없도다”(잠 3:13-15). “지혜는 그 얻은 자에게 생명나무라 지혜를 가진 자는 복되도다”(잠 3:18).

부모는 하나님께 자신의 자녀가 지혜로운 자녀가 되게 해 달라고 기도해야 합니다. 예수님의 어릴 적 성장하는 모습이 누가복음에 기록되어 있습니다. “아기가 자라며 강하여지고 지혜가 충만하며 하나님의 은혜가 그의 위에 있더라”(눅 2:40). “예수는 지혜와 키가 자라가며 하나님과 사람에게 더욱 사랑스러워 가시더라”(눅 2:52). 예수님은 지혜가 자라고 지혜가 충만한 가운데 성장하셨습니다.

지혜가 무엇이기에 성경은 그토록 지혜를 소중히 여기는 것일까요? 지혜의 근본은 하나님을 경외하는 데 있습니다(잠 9:10). 지혜는 겸손한 성품입니다. 잠언은 하나님을 경외함에 대해 언급할 때 겸손을 함께 언급합니다. “여호와를 경외하는 것은 지혜의 훈계라 겸손은 존귀의 길잡이니라”(잠 15:33). “겸손과 여호와를 경외함의 보상은 재물과 영광과 생명이니라”(잠 22:4). 교만한 사람은 어리석습니다. 교만한 사람은 눈이 어두워 보지 못합니다. 하나님은 교만한 사람을 대적하시고 물리치십니다. 반면에 겸손한 사람에게 더욱 큰 은혜를 베풀어 주십니다. “그러나 더욱 큰 은혜를 주시나니 그러므로 일렀으되 하나님이 교만한 자를 물리치시고 겸손한 자에게 은혜를 주신다 하였느니라”(약 4:6). 겸손한 사람은 영의 눈이 밝습니다. 그래서 총명합니다.

지혜는 분별력입니다. 때를 분별하고, 장소를 분별하고, 사람을 분별하고, 해야 할 말과 삼가야 할 말을 분별하는 것입니다. 지혜는 자기 한계를 아는 것입니다. 또한 우리 안에 담아 두신 하나님의 잠재력을 아는 것입니다. 지혜는 문제를 해결하는 능력입니다. 지혜로운 사람은 문제 속에서 비전을 봅니다. 문제를 기적 창조의 재료로 사용합니다. 문제를 성장의 기회로 만듭니다. 지혜는 적응력입니다. 지혜로운 사람은 변화에 잘 적응합니다. 잘 적응하는 사람은 어떤 환경에서도 살아남습니다. 지혜는 소통력입니다. 지혜로운 사람은 대화를 잘합니다. 지혜는 과업을 성취하는 능력입니다. 지혜로운 사람은 하나님이 맡겨주신 과업을 성취해서 하나님께 영광을 돌립니다. 지혜는 자원을 동원하는 능력입니다. 지혜로운 지도자는 과업을 성취하기 위해 지적, 인적, 물질적, 영적 자원을 잘 동원할 줄 압니다. 지혜는 지식과 정보를 활용하는 능력입니다. 아무리 지식을 많이 습득해도 그것을 적용하고 활용하고 연결시키는 능력이 없다면 거의 쓸모가 없습니다.

지혜는 집중력입니다. 스마트폰 시대를 살고 있는 우리는 집중력을 점점 상실해 가고 있습니다. 산만이 유행병이 되었습니다. 최근 연구에 의하면 스마트폰 사용자들은 하루에 평균 2,617번 자신의 스마트폰을 만진다고 합니다. 앤드류 설리번은 “산만이라는 이 새로운 유행병은 우리 문명의 약점이다. 이 병은 우리 마음을 변질시키는데, 이는 마음을 위협한다기보다는 영혼을 위협한다.”고 말합니다. 지혜로운 사람은 산만을 정복하고 가장 중요한 것에 집중할 줄 압니다. 지혜로운 사람은 하나님께 집중합니다. 하나님의 말씀에 집중합니다. 하나님이 맡기신 과업에 집중합니다. 지혜는 나눔에 있습니다. 깨달은 지혜를 나누는 것이 지혜입니다. 하나님이 제게 부흥회와 목회자들을 섬기는 기회를 주시면 제가 하나님께 받은 지혜를 나눕니다. 그 이유는 받은 지혜는 나눌수록 더욱 풍성해지기 때문입니다(눅 6:38). 지혜를 나누는 것이 즐겁기 때문입니다. 모처럼 볼티모어 벧엘교회와 와싱턴중앙장로교회에서 말씀을 전합니다. 또한 목회자들을 위한 세미나를 인도합니다. 성도님들의 중보 기도를 부탁드립니다.

The Joy of Sharing Wisdom

I consider God’s wisdom like treasure. Just as we cannot live without God's grace, it is difficult to live without God's wisdom. We should seek God's grace every day. It’s only when we receive God's grace that we can we live an abundant life. When God's grace comes upon us, amazing blessings follow us. When God's blessing is with us, closed door opens. The problems which couldn’t be solved for a long time will be solved. When God's blessing is with us, we will have blessed encounters. When God's grace was with Joseph, he had blessed encounters. A new path was paved through the blessed encounters. Through those blessed meetings, the closed prison door was opened and Joseph became the prime minister - saving the lives of all his people.

Along with grace, we should also seek God’s wisdom. God grants wisdom to those who pray. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5). In order to become a seeker of wisdom, you must desperately realize the importance of wisdom. Only those who know the value of wisdom will pray for wisdom. Proverbs is a book of wisdom. The book of Proverbs says those who find wisdom are blessed. “Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her” (Proverbs 3:13–15). “She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed” (Proverbs 3:18).

Parents should pray to God for their children to become wise. The story of Jesus growing up as a child is recorded in the Gospel of Luke. “And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him” (Luke 2:40). “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:52). Jesus grew in wisdom and in the fullness of wisdom.

What is wisdom that the Bible cherishes it so much? The root of wisdom lies in the fear of God (Proverbs 9:10). Wisdom is a humble characteristic. When Proverbs speaks of the fear of God, it also refers to humility. “The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 15:33). “Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life” (Proverbs 22:4). A proud person is foolish. A proud person is blind and cannot see. God opposes and defeats the proud. On the other hand, He gives greater grace to the humble. “But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble’” (James 4:6). A humble person has bright eyes. So, he is brilliant.

Wisdom is discernment. It is to discern the time, the place, the person, and it is to discern what to say and what to refrain from saying. Wisdom is knowing your limits. It is also knowing the potential that God has put within us. Wisdom is the ability to solve problems. A wise person sees vision in a problem. He uses problems as raw materials for creating miracles. He turns problems into opportunities for growth. Wisdom is adaptability. A wise person adapts well to change. A well-adapted person will survive in any environment. Wisdom is communication. A wise person is a good communicator. Wisdom is the ability to accomplish a task. A wise person brings glory to God by accomplishing the task God has entrusted to him. Wisdom is the ability to mobilize resources. A wise leader knows how to mobilize the intellectual, human, material, and spiritual resources to accomplish a task. Wisdom is the ability to use knowledge and information. No matter how much knowledge you acquire, it is of little use without the ability to apply, use, and connect it.

Wisdom is concentration. We are living in the age of smartphones and we are losing our concentration. Distraction has become an epidemic. According to a recent study, smartphone users touch their smartphone an average of 2,617 times a day. Andrew Sullivan said, “This new epidemic of distraction is our civilization’s specific weakness. And its threat is not so much to our minds, even they shape-shift under the pressure. The threat is to our souls.” A wise man knows how to conquer distractions and focus on what matters most. A wise man focuses on God. He focuses on the Word of God. He focuses on the task God has entrusted to him. Wisdom is in sharing. Wisdom is sharing the wisdom you have gained. When God gives me the opportunity to serve in conferences and for pastors, I share the wisdom I received from God. The reason for this is because the wisdom we receive grows more abundantly as we share more of it (Luke 6:38). It is also fun to share wisdom. It has been a very long time since I had this opportunity, and I will preach at Bethel Church in Baltimore and Central Presbyterian Church in Washington. I am also leading seminars for pastors.
