[목회서신] 책을 만나면 가슴이 설렙니다! | Encountering a Book Makes My Heart Flutter!

사람마다 가슴을 설레게 만드는 것이 다릅니다. 또한 인생의 계절에 따라 마음을 설레게 하는 것이 다릅니다. 제 가슴을 설레게 하는 것은 책입니다. 말씀을 묵상하기 위해 성경을 펼 때 마음이 설렙니다. 묵상한 말씀이 깨달아질 때 마음이 설렙니다. 또한 깨달은 말씀을 나누려고 강단에 설 때 마음이 설렙니다. 설교를 준비하는 것은 힘든 일입니다. 때로는 격한 노동입니다. 정신적 노동만이 아니라 육체적 노동이기도 합니다. 말씀을 묵상하고, 그 말씀을 성령님의 도움을 받아 하나님의 은혜 안에서 깨닫는 것은 정신적 노동입니다. 정신만 움직이는 것이 아니라 감정도 움직입니다. 그래서 감정 노동이기도 합니다. 또한 깨달은 것을 책상에 앉아 몇 시간씩 설교원고를 쓰고 글을 쓰는 것은 육체노동입니다. 책은 머리로 쓰는 것 같지만 사실 엉덩이로 씁니다. 의자에 앉아 집중하지 않으면 글을 쓸 수 없습니다.

노동(勞動)이라고 하면 어떤 사람에게는 좋은 이미지가 아닙니다. 노동을 저주로 생각하는 분이 있습니다. 하지만 노동은 하나님의 은총의 통로입니다. 노동은 일하는 것입니다. 하나님은 일하시는 분입니다. 지금도 일하십니다. “예수께서 그들에게 이르시되 내 아버지께서 이제까지 일하시니 나도 일한다 하시매”(요 5:17).

노동(勞動)이란 단어는 “일할” 노(勞)와 “움직일” 동(動)의 합성어입니다. 노동은 일하는 것입니다. 육체적 그리고 정신적으로 일하는 것입니다. 하나님은 일을 통해 우리에게 복을 주십니다. 일을 통해 잠재력을 발휘하게 하십니다. 일을 통해 성취감을 맛보게 하십니다. 일을 통해 의미를 발견하고 보람을 얻습니다. 하나님이 맡기신 일을 하는 중에 좋은 만남의 복을 누리게 됩니다. 하나님이 맡기신 일을 성취하는 중에 하나님의 공급하시는 은혜를 경험하게 됩니다. 일을 통해 창의력을 발휘하게 하십니다. 일을 통해 하나님의 선물인 재능과 은사가 빛을 발하게 됩니다. 그런 면에서 일은 복된 것입니다. 사람은 일을 할 때 건강합니다.

움직일 동(動)이라는 한자가 흥미롭습니다. 움직일 동(動)은 “나다, 살다, 살아나다, 변하다.”라는 뜻이 있습니다. 움직일 때 생명이 약동합니다. 움직여야 삽니다. 움직여야 변화됩니다. 노동이라는 단어를 숙고하는 중에 놀라운 사실을 하나 더 발견하게 됩니다. 노동(勞動)이라는 두 단어 속에는 “힘” 력(力)이라는 단어가 내포되어 있습니다. 노동은 힘을 쓰는 일입니다. 또한 힘을 얻는 일입니다. 움직여야 삽니다. 머리도 움직이고, 가슴도 움직이고, 몸도 움직여야 건강합니다.

책을 읽고 글을 쓰는 것은 움직이는 것입니다. 책을 읽고 글을 쓰는 것은 생각을 잉태하고 출산하는 일입니다. 책을 읽고 글을 쓸 때 생각이 움직입니다. 마음이 움직입니다. 손이 움직입니다. 책을 읽고 글을 쓸 때 제가 그동안 읽은 책들과 배운 것들이 관련을 맺고 통합되고, 융합되는 것을 경험합니다. 제 존재 안에서 놀라운 움직임이 시작되는 순간이 바로 책을 읽고 글을 쓰는 순간입니다. 사람은 움직일 때 성장하고, 변화하고, 성숙합니다. 책을 읽는 사람은 지속적으로 성장합니다. 책을 지속적으로 읽는 사람의 미래를 아무도 예측할 수 없습니다. 책은 아름다운 미래를 창조하는 하나님의 도구이며, 하나님의 아이디어입니다. 하나님은 성경이라는 책을 쓰게 하시고, 또한 우리에게 선물해 주셨습니다. 하나님은 성경을 통해 일하시고, 책을 통해 역사하십니다.

저는 모국을 방문할 때마다 서점에 들릅니다. 서점에 들르기 위해 차를 타면 마음이 설렙니다. 책은 저의 연인입니다. 저의 친구입니다. 저의 스승입니다. 책을 통해 기도수업을 받습니다. 인생수업을 받습니다. 상실수업을 받습니다. 연애수업과 결혼수업을 받습니다. 감사수업을 받습니다. 경영수업을 받습니다. 책을 통해 문제를 해결하는 지혜를 얻습니다. 위기를 기회로 만드는 지혜를 얻습니다. 역경을 역전시키는 지혜를 배웁니다. 책을 통해 마음의 정원을 가꾸는 지혜를 배웁니다. 책을 통해 하나님과 친밀한 교제를 나누는 법을 배웁니다. 책을 통해 시간관리, 실패관리, 위기관리, 갈등관리, 그리고 재정관리를 잘하는 지혜를 배웁니다. 책 속에 길이 있습니다.

책은 제게 깨달음을 주고, 영감을 줍니다. 책을 읽는 것은 펌프를 통해 물을 끌어 올리기 위해 마중물을 붓는 것과 같습니다. 마중물을 붓고 펌프질을 하면 깊은 생수가 솟구쳐 올라옵니다. 책은 제 안에 있는 베데스다 연못을 동하게 만드는 것과 같습니다. 책은 마음의 상처를 치유해 줍니다. 책은 과거를 새롭게 해석하도록 도와줍니다. 과거를 새롭게 해석하면 과거가 새롭게 탄생합니다. 책은 과거를 떠나 꿈을 꾸게 합니다. 제 생애 하나님께 받은 복중의 하나는 말씀을 맛보아 알게 된 것입니다(시 19:10, 119:103). 말씀을 통해 하나님의 선하심을 맛보아 알게 된 것입니다(시 34:8). 또한 책 맛을 알고, 글맛을 알게 된 것입니다. 말씀 묵상의 깊이 속으로 들어가게 된 것입니다. 우리 함께 성경을 읽고, 책을 읽도록 합시다. 성경과 책을 읽는 중에 변화와 성숙을 경험하도록 합시다. 모국 집회의 많은 일정 중에도 책 읽는 일은 계속하고 있습니다. 모국 집회를 인도하고 있는 저희 부부를 위해 중보기도 해 주셔서 진심으로 감사드립니다. 곧 뵙겠습니다.

Encountering a Book Makes My Heart Flutter!

What excites people varies from one person to another and changes with the seasons of life. For me, it is books. My heart flutters when I unfold the Bible to meditate on the Word. My heart flutters when the meditated Word is understood. My heart flutters when I stand at the pulpit to share the understood Word. Preparing sermons is a tough task. Sometimes it is intense labor. It is not only mental work but also physical work. Meditating on the Word and understanding it through the Holy Spirit's help within God's grace is mental labor. It is not only the mind that moves but also the emotions. Therefore, it is emotional labor. Also, writing a sermon manuscript or other writings while sitting at a desk for hours is physical labor. Books seem to be written with the mind, but in fact, they are written with the backside. Without sitting and focusing, one cannot write.

The term 'labor' (노동 勞動) may not bring a good image to some people. There are those who consider labor a curse. However, labor is a channel of God's grace. Labor is working. God is a worker. He is still working. "Jesus said to them, 'My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.'" (John 5:17).

The term 'labor' (노동 勞動) is a compound word of "work" (노 勞) and "move" (동 動). Labor is working. It is working both physically and mentally. God blesses us through work. Through work, we express our potential. Through work, we taste achievement. Through work, we discover meaning and gain satisfaction. In the process of doing the work God has entrusted to us, we enjoy the blessing of good encounters. In accomplishing the work God has assigned, we experience the grace He provides. Through work, we express creativity. Through work, God's gifts of talents and spiritual gifts shine. In this sense, work is a blessing. People are healthy when they work.

The Chinese character for 'move' (동 動) is interesting. 'Move' (동 動) means "to emerge, to live, to revive, to change." Life pulsates when we move. We must move to live. We must move to change. While pondering the word labor, I discovered another astonishing fact. Within the two words that make up labor (노동 勞動), the word "strength" (력 力) is implied. Labor is an act of using strength. It is also an act of gaining strength. We must move to live. The head must move, the heart must move, and the body must move to be healthy.

Reading and writing books is moving. Reading and writing books is conceiving and giving birth to thoughts. When reading and writing books, thoughts move. The heart moves. The hands move. When reading and writing books, I experience the relationship, integration, and fusion of the books I have read and learned. The moment of amazing movement within me begins precisely when I read and write books. People grow, change, and mature when they move. A person who reads books grows continuously. No one can predict the future of a person who continuously reads books. Books are God's tool for creating a beautiful future, and an idea of God. God had the Bible written and gifted it to us. God works through the Bible, and He acts through books.

Every time I visit my motherland, I stop by bookstores. My heart flutters when I get in the car to go to a bookstore. Books are my lover. They are my friend. They are my teacher. Through books, I receive lessons in prayer, life, loss, love, marriage, gratitude, and management. Through books, I gain wisdom to solve problems. Wisdom to turn crises into opportunities. Wisdom to reverse adversity. Wisdom to tend the garden of the mind. Wisdom to have intimate fellowship with God. Through books, I learn to manage time, failure, crises, conflicts, and finances well. There is a way within books.

Books give me enlightenment and inspiration. Reading books is like pouring water into a pump to draw deep spring water. When you pour water and pump, deep spring water gushes out. Books make the Bethesda pool within me stir. Books heal the wounds of the heart. Books help reinterpret the past. When the past is reinterpreted, it is reborn. Books make you leave the past and dream. One of the blessings I received from God in my life is that I have tasted and known the Word (Psalm 19:10, 119:103). I have tasted and known the goodness of God through His Word (Psalm 34:8). Also, I have come to know the taste of books and writing. I have entered into the depths of meditating on the Word. Let's read the Bible together, and read books. Let's experience change and maturity while reading the Bible and books. Even amidst the busy schedule of meetings in my motherland, I continue to read books. I sincerely thank you for your intercessory prayers for my wife and me, who are leading the motherland meetings.
