[목회서신] 책을 좋아하는 목사 | A Pastor Who Loves Books

저는 날마다 책을 읽는 목사입니다. 저는 책을 좋아하는 목사입니다. 책이 좋아서 날마다 책을 읽습니다. 책 중의 책인 성경을 읽습니다. 어느 날 제가 무엇을 좋아하는지 생각해 보았습니다. 깊이 생각하는 중에 제가 좋아하는 것은 책이라는 사실을 새삼 깨달았습니다. 우리는 좋아하는 것을 지속하고 반복합니다. 제가 책을 늘 가까이하고 책을 읽는 것을 보면 제가 책을 좋아하는 것이 분명합니다. 가족 휴가 중에도 틈틈이 책을 읽는 것이 저의 즐거움입니다. 책을 좋아하는 제게는 책을 좋아하는 이유가 있습니다.

제가 책을 좋아하는 이유는 책이 저를 성장시켜 주기 때문입니다. 제 안에는 성장에 대한 갈망이 있습니다. 성장에 대한 갈망은 하나님이 모든 사람에게 넣어주신 성장 본능입니다. 하지만 제게는 성장에 대한 갈망이 다른 사람보다 더 강렬한 것 같습니다. 아주 오래 전에 어떤 분이 제게 성장 과욕이라는 말을 해 주셨습니다. 그 말을 처음 들을 때 조금 불편했습니다. 하지만 저는 그 말을 좋게 해석했습니다. 성장에 대한 의욕 없이 살아가는 것보다 성장을 갈망하며 사는 것이 좋다고 스스로를 위로했습니다.

제가 책을 좋아하는 이유는 책이 저의 눈을 열어 주기 때문입니다. 읽는다는 것은 본다는 것입니다. 글자를 본다는 것이 아니라 책 속에 담긴 인생을 보는 것입니다. 책 속에서 만나는 사람들을 본다는 것입니다. 무엇보다 제 자신을 보는 것입니다. 책은 거울 같습니다. 그래서 저를 보게 만들어줍니다. 책은 저의 죄와 거짓된 욕망을 보게 해 줍니다. 제 자신을 성찰하는 데 책보다 좋은 것은 없었습니다. 소크라테스는 “성찰하지 않은 삶은 살 가치가 없다.”라고 말했습니다. 성찰은 자신을 아는 데 있습니다. 자신의 장점과 단점을 아는 것입니다.

저는 책을 통해 저를 보고, 저를 바로잡고, 저를 고쳐 나갔습니다. 책을 통해 받은 가장 큰 상은 제 자신의 죄를 본 것입니다. 제 자신의 죄를 본 까닭에 누구도 함부로 정죄하지 않습니다. 비난하지 않습니다. 책은 저의 죄만 보게 해 준 것이 아니라 제 안에 있는 무한한 가능성을 보게 해 주었습니다. 우리 안에는 두 가지 본성이 있습니다. 하나는 괴물이 될 수 있는 악한 본성입니다. 다른 하나는 천사보다 더 아름다운 인간이 될 수 있는 선한 본성입니다. 중요한 것은 어느 본성에 초점을 맞추고 그 본성을 키우느냐에 따라 우리 인생은 달라집니다.

제가 책을 좋아하는 이유는 생각을 유연하게 해 주기 때문입니다. 책을 읽으면 인생을 다각적으로 보게 됩니다. 인생의 문제를 다각적으로 해석하고 반응하게 됩니다. 책을 읽지 않으면 생각이 고정됩니다. 생각이 딱딱해집니다. 과거의 경험에 집착하게 됩니다. 그래서 고집스러운 사람이 됩니다. 자기가 알고 있는 것이 전부이며 최고인 것처럼 고집을 부리게 됩니다. 고집을 부리는 사람은 쉽게 싸웁니다. 자신의 입장만 보고 상대방의 입장을 보지 못하면 싸움을 하게 됩니다. 문제는 고집을 부리는 것으로 끝나는 것이 아닙니다. 그 고집은 교만의 모습으로 드러납니다. 반면에 생각이 유연하게 되면 다른 사람의 관점을 받아들이게 됩니다. 생각이 유연하면 잘 싸우지 않습니다. 생각이 유연하면 사람들의 다양한 생각을 이해하게 되고 용납하게 됩니다. 물론 다른 사람의 생각을 용납한다고 해서 그 사람의 생각이나 행동이 다 옳다고 인정해 주는 것은 아닙니다.

제가 책을 좋아하는 이유는 깨달음의 기쁨을 선물해 주기 때문입니다. 책을 읽게 되면 새로운 깨달음을 얻게 됩니다. 깨달음의 경험은 “아 하!”의 경험입니다. 이 경험은 열림의 경험입니다. 생각이 열리고 마음이 열리고 인생이 열리는 경험입니다. 깨달음의 경험은 막힌 것이 뚫리는 경험입니다. 막힌 것이 뚫려 통하는 경험입니다. 통하지 않으면 고통이 옵니다. 하지만 통하면 유쾌함이 찾아옵니다. 저는 읽은 책의 내용을 비교적 많이 기억하는 편입니다. 그 이유는 “아 하”의 감동을 많이 받기 때문입니다. 자신이 깊이 감동을 받은 내용은 기억하기 쉽습니다. 잘 잊혀지지 않습니다. 깨달은 내용을 다른 분들과 나누게 될 때 깨달음의 기쁨은 배가 됩니다. 또한 깨달은 내용은 단기 기억에서 장기 기억으로 넘어가서 우리 뇌에 각인되는 경험을 하게 됩니다.

제가 책을 좋아하는 이유는 저를 변화시켜 주기 때문입니다. 톨스토이의 말처럼 우리는 모두 사람들이 변화되어야 한다고 생각하지만 자신이 변화되어야 한다고 생각하지 않습니다. 하지만 변화되어야 할 대상은 누구 보다 우리 자신입니다. 책은 다른 사람을 변화시키기 전에 우리 자신이 변화되도록 도와줍니다. 어떤 책을 읽은 후에는 그 책을 읽기 전과는 다른 사람이 됩니다. 제가 책을 읽는 것 같지만 책이 저를 읽어줍니다. 책은 제가 변화되어야 할 것을 알려줍니다. 책 읽는 사람이 누리는 기쁨은 자신의 변화와 성숙에 있습니다. 저는 성도님들과 함께 책 읽는 공동체를 세우고 싶습니다. 책 중의 책인 성경을 날마다 읽고 삶에 적용하는 공동체를 세우고 싶습니다. 우리 함께 책을 읽는 아름다운 공동체를 세우도록 합시다.

A Pastor Who Loves Books

I am a pastor who reads books every day. I am a pastor who loves books. I love books, so I read them every day. I read the Bible, which is the book of books. One day I thought about what I like. As I was thinking deeply, I realized that my favorite thing was books. We continue and repeat what we like. When I see that I am always close to books and read all the time, it is clear that I like books. It is my pleasure to read books in my spare time even during family vacation. As a book lover, there are reasons for why I love books.

I love books because they make me grow. I have a longing for growth within me. The desire for growth is a growth instinct that God has put in every person. But it seems to me that the longing for growth is stronger than that of others. A long time ago, someone told me that I am excessively greedy about growing. When I first heard that, I was a little uncomfortable. But I interpreted it in a good way. I comforted myself by saying that it is better to live longing for growth than to live without it.

I love books because they open my eyes. To read is to see. It's not about looking at the letters; it's about seeing life in the book. It is to see the people you meet in the book. Above all else, it is to see myself. Books are like mirrors. So it makes me see myself. Books make me see my sins and my false desires. There is nothing better than a book for self-reflection. Socrates said, "An unexamined life is not worth living." Reflection lies in knowing yourself. It is to know our own strengths and weaknesses.

I, through the books, saw myself, corrected myself, and fixed myself. The greatest reward I have received through books is seeing my own sins. Because I have seen my own sins, I do not judge anyone recklessly. I don't criticize anyone. The book made me see not only my sins, but the infinite possibilities within me. There are two natures within us. One is the evil nature that can make us a monster and the other is the good nature of being able to become a human who is more beautiful than an angel. What matters is that our life will be changed depending on which nature we focus on and what we nurture.

I love books because they make my thoughts flexible. Reading books gives us different perspectives on life. It enables us to interpret and respond to life's problems in multiple ways. If you don't read books, your thoughts are fixed. Your thoughts are hardened. You become obsessed with past experiences. So you become a stubborn person. You will insist that you know everything and you are the best. A stubborn person quarrels easily. If you only look at your own point of view and don't see the other person's point of view, you will quarrel. The problem doesn't end with being stubborn. That stubbornness is shown in the form of pride. On the other hand, if you are flexible, you will accept other people's points of view. If your mind is flexible, you won't quarrel often. If you are flexible in your thoughts, you will understand and tolerate the different opinions of people. Of course, accepting another person's thoughts does not mean that all of their thoughts or actions are correct.

I love books because they present the joy of realization. Reading books gives us new realizations. The experience of a realization is an “Ah-ha!” moment. This experience is a moment of opening. It is an experience that opens our mind, opens our heart, and opens up our life. The experience of realization is the experience of breaking through the blockages. It is an experience through which the blockages are cleared. If it is not connected, pain will come. But when it is, you will find joy. I tend to remember a lot of the contents of the books I read. The reason is because I get a lot of “Ah-ha!” moments. It is easy to remember the things that deeply touch you. It is not well forgotten. The joy of realization is doubled when you share what you have learned with others. In addition, the learned content is transferred from short-term memory to long-term memory, and experiences are imprinted in our brain.

I love books because they change me. As Tolstoy said, we all think that people need to be changed, but we don't think ourselves should be changed. But the one that needs to be changed is ourselves more than anyone else. Books help us change ourselves before we change others. After reading a book, you become a different person than before you read the book. I feel like I'm reading a book, but the book reads me. Books tell me what I need to change. The joy that readers enjoy lies in their own transformation and maturity. I want to build a reading community with the saints. I want to build a community that reads the Bible, the book of books, every day and applies it to life. Let's build a beautiful community by reading together.
