[목회서신] 책 속에서 보화를 캐내는 지혜 | The Wisdom of Digging for Treasures in Books

책을 존중할 때 보화를 선물해 줍니다. 존중은 좋은 것을 끌어오는 원리입니다. 우리가 만나는 사람들을 존중할 때 사람들은 최상의 것을 선물해 줍니다. 반면에 우리가 만나는 사람들을 멸시하고 함부로 대하면 좋은 것을 선물해 주지 않습니다. 예수님께서 고향을 방문하셨을 때 고향 사람들이 예수님을 존경하지 않았습니다. 예수님을 마리아의 아들 목수라고 멸시하면서 예수님을 배척했습니다(막 6:3). 예수님은 자신을 존경하지 않는 고향에서 아무 권능도 행하실 수 없었습니다(막 6:5). 예수님은 안타까운 마음으로 말씀하셨습니다. “예수께서 그들에게 이르시되 선지자가 자기 고향과 자기 친척과 자기 집 외에서는 존경을 받지 못함이 없느니라”(막 6:4).

책을 읽을 때 책을 존중해야 합니다. 책을 쓴 저자를 존중해야 합니다. 책을 폄하(貶下)하면 책을 읽어도 도움이 되지 않습니다. 반면에 책을 존귀히 여기고, 책의 가치를 인정하고, 책을 쓴 저자를 존중할 때 책에서 많은 보화를 캐낼 수 있습니다. 책에서 캐내는 보화는 지식과 정보와 지혜입니다. 책 속에는 감추어진 보화가 많이 담겨 있습니다. 책을 쓰는 사람은 아무렇게나 책을 쓰지 않습니다. 책을 쓰는 사람은 자신이 10년, 20년 또는 평생 동안 배운 것 중에서 가장 좋은 것을 책에 담습니다. 물론 책 중에는 읽어서는 안 될 책도 있습니다. 하지만 대부분의 책은 저자가 심려(深慮)를 기울여 쓴 책입니다. 그러므로 존중하는 마음으로 책을 읽으면 보석을 발견하게 됩니다.

책을 사랑할 때 보화를 선물해 줍니다. 책을 좋아하는 단계를 넘어 책을 사랑하는 단계로 들어가야 합니다. 책을 사랑하는 단계에서 책을 즐기는 단계로 들어가야 합니다. 사랑의 극치는 즐김과 누림에 있습니다. 사랑은 배움의 원리입니다. 우리는 사랑하는 대상에게 가장 잘 배웁니다. 우리가 어떤 과목을 사랑했다면, 그것은 그 과목을 사랑했다기보다 그 과목을 가르친 선생님을 사랑했을 가능성이 높습니다. 우리는 사랑하는 선생님이 가르친 과목을 가장 잘 배운 경험이 있습니다. 사랑하면 즐기게 되고, 즐기게 되면 이해가 쉬워집니다. 우리는 사랑하는 것만큼 이해하게 됩니다. 우리는 사랑하는 것을 소중히 여기고, 사랑하는 것을 오래 기억하게 됩니다. 사랑하면 가슴에 새깁니다. 책을 사랑한다는 것은 책을 쓴 저자를 사랑한다는 것을 의미합니다.

책을 신뢰할 때 보화를 선물해 줍니다. 책을 신뢰하라는 것은 책 속에 길이 있다고 믿는 것을 의미합니다. 저는 책 속에 길이 있다고 믿습니다. 길은 도(道)입니다. 도(道)는 우리가 깨달아야 할 이치(理致)를 의미합니다. 길은 인생 문제의 해결책입니다. 길은 곧 생명입니다. 추운 겨울에 산속에서 길을 잃으면 죽을 수 있습니다. 책을 신뢰하라는 것은 책을 우상화하라는 뜻이 결코 아닙니다. 책을 신뢰하라는 말은 책 속에 보화가 담겨 있다는 것을 믿으라는 의미입니다. 책을 읽을 때 가장 좋지 않은 자세는 냉소주의입니다. 책을 읽어도 별 도움이 안 된다는 냉소주의는 아주 좋지 않은 자세입니다. 책을 읽을 때 책을 대하는 태도에 따라 많은 것이 결정됩니다. 책을 읽을 때 호기심을 가지고 읽으십시오. 기대를 가지고 읽으십니다. 물론 한 권의 책에 너무 큰 기대를 갖는 것은 비현실적입니다. 한 권의 책이 담을 수 있는 지식과 정보와 지혜는 한계가 있습니다. 적절한 기대를 갖고 책을 읽을 때 우리에게 필요한 적합한 지혜를 얻을 수 있습니다.

왜 제가 책을 읽는 방법을 소개하는 것일까요? 제가 소개하는 책 읽는 방법이 하나님의 말씀을 읽을 때 적용할 수 있는 방법이기 때문입니다. 하나님의 말씀을 읽을 때 말씀을 존중하십시오. 말씀의 원저자가 되시는 성령님을 존중하십시오(딤후 3:16). 하나님의 말씀을 읽을 때 말씀을 사랑하십시오. 말씀 속에서 만나는 하나님을 사랑하십시오. 하나님의 말씀을 읽을 때 말씀을 신뢰하십시오. 또한 말씀 속에서 만나는 하나님을 신뢰하십시오. 책 중의 책은 성경입니다. 성경 속에서 길이 있습니다. 성경 속에서 길 되시는 예수님을 만나게 됩니다(요 14:6). 다른 책들과 달리 성경을 읽을 때는 천천히 깊이 읽어야 합니다. 성경을 읽을 때는 우리가 성경에 의해 읽히는 것이 더욱 중요합니다. 성경은 거울과 같습니다. 성경은 우리 자신의 진면모를 보여주는 거울입니다. 성경을 읽을 때 우리는 자신을 발견하고 변화와 성숙을 추구하게 됩니다. 깊어 가는 가을, 성경과 좋은 책들 속에서 보화를 캐내어 사용하시길 바랍니다.

The Wisdom of Digging for Treasures in Books

There are treasures contained in a book. But some people cannot find the treasures even though they ready the book. I found treasures while reading books. So, I like books, and I am close to books. So I write books and give them as gifts. Just reading the book is not always helpful. You must learn the wisdom of digging for treasure from books. Above all, it is important to learn how to read constantly. Goethe said, "I devoted 80 years to learning how to read, still it's not enough." I am still learning how to read. I would like to share with you some of the ways of reading books that I have learned over the years.

When you honor a book, it presents a treasure. Honor is a principle that draws good things. When we honor the people we meet, they gift us the best. On the other hand, if we recklessly treat the people we meet, they will not gift us anything good. When Jesus visited His hometown, the people of His hometown did not respect him. They rejected Jesus, despising Him as the carpenter, son of Mary (Mark 6:3). Jesus could not perform any miracles in his hometown, where He was not respected (Mark 6:5). Jesus said with a sad heart. "Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor." (Mark 6:4)

When you read a book, you should honor it. You should honor the author who wrote the book. Reading a book will not help you if you disparage it. On the other hand, when you honor a book, appreciate its value, and honor its author, you can dig up a lot of treasure from it. The treasures found in books are knowledge, information, and wisdom. The book contains many hidden gems. A person who writes a book does not write a book randomly. A person who writes a book puts in a book the best of what he or she has learned in 10 years, 20 years, or a lifetime. Of course, there are some books you shouldn't read. However, most of the books are written with great care by the author. Therefore, if you read the book with honor, you will find a jewel.

When you love books, they give you treasures. You have to go beyond the level of liking books to the level of loving books. You need to go from the level of loving books to the level of enjoying books. The ultimate in love lies in delighting and enjoying. Love is the principle of learning. We learn best from those we love. If you loved a subject, you likely loved the teacher who taught the subject rather than the subject itself. We have the best experience of learning subjects taught by our beloved teachers. If you love it, you will enjoy it, and if you enjoy it, it will be easy to understand. We understand as much as we love. We value what we love and remember what we love for a long time. If you love it, it will be engraved on your heart. To love a book means to love the author who wrote it.

When you trust books, they give you treasures. To trust books means to believe that there is a way in them. I believe there is a way in books. The way is called Tao(道). The way (道) is the principle we need to understand (理致). The way is the solution to life's problems. The way is also life. Getting lost in the mountains in the cold winter can kill you. Trusting a book never means idolizing it. To trust a book means to believe in the treasures contained in the book. The worst posture for reading is cynicism. The cynicism of reading a book doesn't help much is a terrible attitude. When you read a book, a lot depends on how you treat it. When you read a book, read it with curiosity. Read it with anticipation. Of course, it is unrealistic to have too high expectations for one book. There is a limit to the knowledge, information, and wisdom that one book can contain. When we read with proper expectations, we can obtain the appropriate wisdom we need.

Why am I introducing how to read a book? It is because the reading method I am introducing is a method that can be applied when reading the Word of God. When you read the Word of God, honor it. Honor the Holy Spirit, the author of the Word (2 Timothy 3:16). Love the Word as you read it. Love God you meet in the Word. When you read the Word of God, trust the Word. Also, trust God you meet in the Word. Book of the Books is the Bible. There is a way in the Bible. You will meet Jesus, who is the way in the Bible (John 14:6). Unlike other books, when you read the Bible, you have to read it slowly and deeply. When we read the Bible, it is even more important that the Bible reads us. The Bible is like a mirror. The Bible is a mirror that reveals our true nature. When we read the Bible, we discover ourselves and pursue change and maturity. I hope you dig up treasures from the Bible and good books in the deepening autumn and use them.
