[목회서신] 탁월한 목수에게 배우는 지혜 | Wisdom Learned from a Master Carpenter

예수님의 직업은 목수였습니다. 사람들이 예수님을 목수의 아들이라고 불렀습니다. “이는 그 목수의 아들이 아니냐 그 어머니는 마리아”(마 13:55상). 또한 예수님을 목수라고 불렀습니다. “이 사람이 마리아의 아들 목수가 아니냐”(막 6:3상). 예수님의 육신의 아버지라고 불린 요셉은 목수였습니다. 요셉은 예수님의 어머니의 약혼자였고 남편이었습니다(마 1:18, 20). 저는 왜 예수님은 그 많은 직업 가운데 목수라는 직업을 선택하셨을까 질문을 품은 적이 있습니다. H. 마이클 브루어는 저의 질문을 다음과 같이 답변해 줍니다.

“목수는 집을 짓고 고친다. 필요한 것을 짓고 부서진 것을 고치는 것들이 바로 목수의 일이다. 나사렛 예수는 모든 일을 잘 해낼 수 있었겠지만, 나는 예수의 소명에 이보다 더 적합한 일은 없다고 생각한다. 어린 예수는 아버지 요셉이 자신의 목공소에서 일하는 것을 지켜보며 자랐다. 필요한 것을 짓는 일과 부서진 것을 고치는 목수의 두 가지 일은 어린 예수의 인생관과 그의 소명감을 형성해 주었다.”(H. 마이클 브루어, 『예수님의 솜씨』, 시냇가의 심은나무, 13쪽)

예수님은 이 땅에 고치시는 일과 새로운 것을 창조하는 일을 위해 오셨습니다. 예수님은 병든 영혼들과 세상을 고치시기 위해 오셨습니다. 죄인을 새로운 피조물로 창조하시기 위해 오셨습니다. “그런즉 누구든지 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라 이전 것은 지나갔으니 보라 새 것이 되었도다”(고후 5:17). 우리는 예수님을 통해 새 사람이 되었습니다. “새 사람을 입었으니 이는 자기를 창조하신 이의 형상을 따라 지식에까지 새롭게 하심을 입은 자니라”(골 3:10). 또한 예수님은 새로운 공동체를 세우시기 위해 오셨습니다. 예수님은 구약의 성전을 폐하시고 그리스도의 몸된 교회를 세우셨습니다. 교회는 예수님이 새롭게 창조하신 공동체입니다. 교회는 예수님의 몸이며, 예수님의 신부입니다. 예수님을 믿는 우리는 예수님의 몸 된 교회의 지체입니다.

목수가 소중히 여기는 것은 나무입니다. 목수는 좋은 재목(材木)을 찾기 위해 산을 찾아다닙니다. 목수는 산을 찾아다니다가 좋은 나무를 만나면 표시해 둡니다. 바로 벌목(伐木)하지 않고 잘 성장하도록 기다립니다. 나무가 잘 커서 쓸 만한 재목이 되기까지 기다립니다. 목수는 인내하는 사람입니다. 또한 나무가 잘 컸을 때도 아주 적합한 때에 필요한 작품을 만들기 위해 기다립니다. 예수님은 제자들을 선택하기 위해 그들의 삶의 현장을 방문하셨습니다. 그리고 그들을 관찰하셨습니다. 그들 안에 있는 무한한 가능성을 보셨습니다. 예수님은 그들을 부르시고, 그들을 키워서 존귀하게 사용하셨습니다.

탁월한 목수는 나무 조각까지 거의 버리는 법이 없다고 합니다. 그 이유는 모든 나무는 그 나름대로 쓸모가 있기 때문입니다. 탁월한 목수는 가능한 모든 나무를 적절하게 사용합니다. 예수님의 눈에 쓸모없는 사람은 없습니다. 예수님은 사람들이 볼 때 쓸모없다고 여긴 사람들을 선택해서 쓸만한 인물로 키우셨습니다. 예수님이 선택한 제자들 가운데 어부들이 있었고, 그 당시 죄인이라고 낙인찍혔던 세리도 있었습니다. 일곱 귀신 들렸던 막달라 마리아는 예수님의 여제자 중의 하나였습니다. 예수님은 쓸모없는 것을 쓸모 있게 만드신 분입니다. 사람들이 버린 나무들을 아주 적합하게 사용할 줄 아는 탁월한 목수이십니다. 하나님은 건축자가 버린 돌을 집 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되게 하시는 분입니다. “건축자가 버린 돌이 집 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되었나니”(시 118:22). 예수님은 십자가에서 건축자의 버린 돌처럼 버림을 받으셨습니다. 하지만 예수님은 부활하심으로 집 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되셨습니다. “이 예수는 너희 건축자들의 버린 돌로서 집 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되었느니라”(행 4:11).

탁월한 목수는 철저히 준비합니다. 목수가 하는 일 중의 하나는 견적을 내는 일입니다. 또한 설계하는 일입니다. 서두르면 일을 그르칩니다. 준비가 잘 되면 그다음 단계의 일은 쉬워집니다. 많은 사람들이 준비하는 데 실패합니다. 성공에 대한 욕망은 크지만 준비를 위한 헌신이 약합니다. 성공을 위한 의지보다 중요한 것은 성공을 준비하기 위한 의지입니다. 준비에 실패하는 사람은 실패를 준비하는 것입니다. 유영만 교수는 “칼을 쓰는 시간보다 칼을 가는 시간이 길어야 한다. 그래야 단칼에 승부수를 던질 수 있다. 대패질하는 시간보다 대팻날을 가는 시간이 길어야 한다. 그래야 나뭇결을 따라 아름다운 대패질을 할 수 있다.”라고 말합니다. 에이브러햄 링컨은 “나무를 베는 데 6시간이 주어진다면, 4시간은 도끼날을 가는데 쓰겠다.”라고 말했습니다. 조급하면 쓰레기를 만듭니다. 잘 준비하고 기다리면 명작이 탄생합니다. 목수 되신 예수님의 지혜는 가장 탁월한 지혜입니다. 날마다 지혜를 구하고, 지혜를 배우고 실천함으로 풍성한 삶을 사시길 빕니다.

Wisdom Learned from a Master Carpenter

Jesus was a carpenter. People called Jesus the carpenter's son. “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?” (Matthew 13:55a). They also called Jesus a carpenter. “Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son” (Mark 6:3a). Joseph, who was called the father of Jesus, was a carpenter. Joseph was the fiancé and husband of Jesus' mother (Matthew 1:18, 20). I have wondered why Jesus chose the profession of carpenter among so many professions. H. Michael Brewer answers my question as follows:

“A carpenter builds and repairs. Those tasks comprise the whole craft of carpentry: building what is needed and restoring what is broken. Of all the jobs Jesus of Nazareth might have undertaken, I can imagine no other work that better matches the vocation of the Messiah. As young Jesus watched Joseph at work in his wood shop, the twin tasks of carpentry shaped the child’s view of life and his perception of his calling” (H. Michael Brewer, “Lesson from the Carpenter,” The Crown Publishing Group, Kindle Edition, pg. 4).

Jesus came to this earth for the vocation of restoring and creating something new. Jesus came to heal sick souls and the world. He came to make the sinner a new creation. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). We have become new people through Jesus. “And have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator” (Colossians 3:10). Also, Jesus came to establish a new community. Jesus abolished the temple of the Old Testament and established the church, the body of Christ. The church is a new community created by Jesus. The church is the body of Jesus and the bride of Jesus. We who believe in Jesus are members of the church, the body of Jesus.

What carpenters value is wood. A carpenter goes to the mountains to find good lumber. The carpenter searches the mountains and marks a good tree when he finds it. He waits for the tree to grow well without logging right away. He waits until the tree grows well and becomes usable lumber. A carpenter is patient. Also, even when the tree has grown well, he waits until the right time to make a necessary piece. Jesus visited the very places in which his disciples lived when choosing his disciples. And he observed them. He saw the infinite possibilities in them. Jesus called them, raised them, and used them honorably.

It is said that excellent carpenters rarely throw away even a piece of wood. The reason is that every tree is useful in its own way. An excellent carpenter makes good use of all available wood. Similarly, no one is useless in the eyes of Jesus. Jesus chose people who were considered useless in the eyes of people and raised them to be useful. Among the disciples chosen by Jesus were fishermen, and there were also tax collectors, whom at that time he was branded as sinners. Mary Magdalene, possessed by seven demons, was one of Jesus' female disciples. Jesus is the one who makes useless things useful. He is an excellent carpenter who knows how to make the most suitable use of discarded wood. God is the one who makes the stone the builders once rejected into being the capstone of a house. “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone;” (Psalm 118:22). Jesus was rejected on the cross like the stone the builders rejected. However, through his resurrection, Jesus became the capstone of the house. “He is the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone” (Acts 4:11).

Excellent carpenters prepare thoroughly. One of the jobs of a carpenter is to make estimates. It's also to make designs. If you are in a hurry, things get messed up. If you are well prepared, the next step will be easy. A lot of people fail to prepare. The desire to succeed is great, but the commitment to preparation is weak. More important than the will to succeed is the will to prepare for success. Those who fail to prepare are preparing for failure. Professor Yoo, Young-man said, “The time to sharpen the knife should be longer than the time of using the knife. That way, you can throw the number of wins with a single knife. The time to sharpen the carving knife should be longer than the time of carving. That way one can carve beautifully along the grain of the wood.” Abraham Lincoln said, “If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I would spend four hours sharpening my axe.” If you are in a hurry, you will create garbage. If you prepare well and wait, a masterpiece will be produced. The wisdom of Jesus who became a carpenter is the most excellent wisdom. May you live an abundant life by seeking wisdom every day, learning wisdom, and practicing it.
