형통을 위해 기도하는 사람은 지혜로운 사람입니다. 성경에서 말하는 형통은 하나님이 맡기신 과업을 성취하는 것입니다(수 1:8; 대상 22:11). 성경적 형통이란 하나님의 뜻을 이루는 것을 의미합니다. 성경에서 형통을 위해 최초로 기도한 사람은 아브라함의 충성된 종, 엘리에셀입니다. 아브라함은 엘리에셀에게 아들 이삭의 신붓감을 자기 고향 자기 족속에 가서 선택해 오라는 사명을 맡깁니다(창 24:2-4). 사명이란 다른 말로 심부름입니다.

우리 모두는 사명을 가지고 태어났습니다. 하나님이 우리 각 사람을 이 땅에 보내신 이유가 있습니다. 그 이유는 하나님이 이 땅에 보내신 사명을 완수하는 것입니다. 하나님이 맡기신 사명을 완수하는 것은 곧 하나님이 맡기신 심부름을 잘 완수한다는 뜻입니다. 엘리에셀은 자기 주인 아브라함이 맡긴 사명을 완수하는 일을 위해 하나님께 형통의 은혜를 구합니다. “그가 이르되 우리 주인 아브라함의 하나님 여호와여 원하건대 오늘 나에게 순조롭게 만나게 하사 내 주인 아브라함에게 은혜를 베푸시옵소서”(창 24:12).

엘리에셀이 간구한 은혜는 형통의 은혜였습니다. 그의 기도는 주인의 아들의 신붓감을 순조롭게 만나는, 형통의 은혜를 베풀어 달라는 기도였습니다. 나중에 엘리에셀은 그의 기도가 형통을 구하는 기도였다고 말합니다. “내가 오늘 우물에 이르러 말하기를 내 주인 아브라함의 하나님 여호와여 만일 내가 행하는 길에 형통함을 주실진대 내가 이 우물 곁에 서 있다가 젊은 여자가 물을 길으러 오거든 내가 그에게 청하기를 너는 물동이의 물을 내게 조금 마시게 하라 하여 그의 대답이 당신은 마시라 내가 또 당신의 낙타를 위하여도 길으리라 하면 그 여자는 여호와께서 내 주인의 아들을 위하여 정하여 주신 자가 되리이다”(창 24:42-44).

하나님은 엘리에셀의 기도를 들으시고 리브가를 순조롭게 만나게 해 주셨습니다. 리브가를 이삭의 아내로 선택하도록 도와주셨습니다. 그가 하나님께 간구한 형통의 기도는 응답되었습니다. 그는 주인의 아들의 신붓감으로 리브가를 선택한 후에 그녀의 가족에게 말합니다. “여호와께서 내게 형통한 길을 주셨으니 나를 보내어 내 주인에게로 돌아가게 하소서”(창 24:56하).

우리는 형통을 통해 성장하고 고난을 통해 성숙합니다. 형통은 하나님의 아이디어입니다. 형통한다는 것이 고난이 없거나 고난을 면제받는다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 하나님이 형통의 은혜를 베풀어 주시면 고난 중에도 형통하게 됩니다. 성경 속에서 발견한 형통의 비밀을 몇 가지 나눕니다.

첫째, 하나님이 함께하시면 형통하게 됩니다. 하나님이 요셉과 함께하실 때 그는 형통했습니다. “여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시므로 그가 형통한 자가 되어 그의 주인 애굽 사람의 집에 있으니 그의 주인이 여호와께서 그와 함께 하심을 보며 또 여호와께서 그의 범사에 형통하게 하심을 보았더라”(창 39:2-3). 하나님이 함께하실 때 요셉은 그가 하는 모든 일에 형통했습니다.

둘째, 하나님의 말씀을 통해 형통하게 됩니다. 하나님의 말씀이 역사할 때 하나님이 기뻐하시는 뜻이 성취됩니다. 하나님의 말씀이 역사할 때 하나님이 보낸 일에 형통하게 됩니다. “내 입에서 나가는 말도 이와 같이 헛되이 내게로 되돌아오지 아니하고 나의 기뻐하는 뜻을 이루며 내가 보낸 일에 형통함이니라”(사 55:11). 하나님의 말씀은 지혜의 원천이며 지혜의 보고(寶庫)입니다. 하나님의 말씀은 형통케 하는 말씀일 뿐 아니라 형통의 지혜를 선물해 주는 말씀입니다. 하나님의 말씀을 읽고 암송하고 묵상하고 실천할 때 형통의 지혜를 얻게 됩니다.

셋째, 하나님의 지혜를 통해 형통하게 됩니다. 이사야는 장차 오실 예수님의 형통에 대해 예언합니다. “보라 내 종이 형통하리니 받들어 높이 들려서 지극히 존귀하게 되리라”(사 52:13). 예수님의 형통은 십자가와 부활을 통해 인류 구원의 과업을 성취하신 형통입니다. 형통하기 위해서는 지혜로워야 합니다. 어리석으면 형통할 수 없습니다. 형통은 지혜와 밀접한 관계가 있습니다. 구약에 나오는 형통이란 단어는 히브리어로 “사칼(שָׂכַל)”입니다. 그 뜻은 “지혜롭게 행하다” 또는 “신중하게 다루다”는 뜻입니다. 형통한다는 것은 지혜롭게 행하는 것입니다. 형통이란 히브리 단어 속에는 지혜가 담겨 있습니다. 그런 까닭에 형통을 구하는 것은 곧 지혜를 구하는 것입니다.

넷째, 하나님은 좋은 만남을 통해 형통케 하십니다. 느헤미야가 기도했던 형통의 은혜는 좋은 만남을 통해 베풀어 주시는 하나님의 은혜입니다. “주여 구하오니 ... 오늘 종이 형통하여 이 사람 앞에서 은혜를 입게 하옵소서”(느 1:11, 개역한글). 느헤미야는 그에게 맡겨진 성벽 재건의 사명을 완수하기 위해서는 아닥사스다 왕의 도움이 필요한 것을 알았습니다. 혼자서 하나님의 과업을 완수할 수는 없습니다. 하나님의 과업을 성취하기 위해서는 반드시 좋은 만남의 은혜가 있어야 합니다. 각자에게 맡겨진 과업을 성취하기 위해 형통의 은혜를 구하십시오. 또한 우리 자녀들을 위해 형통의 은혜를 구하십시오. “여호와여 우리가 구하옵나니 이제 형통케 하소서”(시 118:25). 형통의 은혜를 통해 사명을 잘 완수하시길 빕니다.

Wisdom of Praying for Success

A person who prays for success is wise. Success in the Bible is to fulfill the task that God has entrusted to you (Joshua 1:8; 1 Chronicles 22:11). Biblical success means fulfilling God's will. In the Bible, Abraham's faithful servant, Eliezer, was the first person to pray for success. Abraham entrusted Eliezer with the mission of choosing a wife for his son Isaac from his hometown and his own family (Genesis 24:2-4). A mission is, in other words, an errand.

We are all born with a mission. There is a reason why God sent each of us to this earth. The reason is to complete the mission God sent us to complete on this earth. Fulfilling the mission entrusted to us by God means successfully completing the errands entrusted to us by God. Eliezer asked God for the grace of prosperity to complete the mission entrusted to him by his master, Abraham. “Then he prayed, “O Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham” (Genesis 24:12).

The grace Eliezer asked for was the grace of success. His prayer was to grant him the grace of success in meeting his master's son's wife smoothly. Eliezer later testifies that his prayer was the reason for his success. “When I came to the spring today, I said, ‘O Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success to the journey on which I have come. See, I am standing beside this spring; if a maiden comes out to draw water and I say to her, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,” and if she says to me, “Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels too,” let her be the one the Lord has chosen for my master’s son’” (Genesis 24:42–44).

God heard Eliezer's prayer and allowed him to meet Rebekah smoothly. He helped choose Rebekah to be Isaac's wife. The prayer of success that he prayed to God was answered. After he chooses Rebekah to be his master's son's wife, he tells her family. He said, “But he said to them, ‘now that the Lord has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master’” (Genesis 24:56b).

We grow through success and mature through suffering. Success is God's idea. Being successful does not mean that there is no suffering or that we are exempt from suffering. If God bestows the grace of success, you will succeed even in the midst of suffering. I would like to share some of the secrets of success found in the Bible.

First, if God is with us, we will succeed. When God was with Joseph, he succeeded. “The Lord was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,” (Genesis 39:2–3). When God was with Joseph, he succeeded in everything he did.

Second, we will succeed through the word of God. When the word of God works, the will that pleases God is fulfilled. When the word of God begins its work, the work commissioned by God will succeed. “So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). The word of God is the source of wisdom and the treasure house of wisdom. The word of God not only leads to success but also, the word of God is a gift to understand the wisdom of success. When you read, memorize, meditate on, and practice the Word of God, you will gain the wisdom of success.

Third, we will succeed trough the wisdom of God. Isaiah prophesies of the future success of Jesus. “See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted” (Isaiah 52:13). The success of Jesus is the success of accomplishing the task of saving mankind through the cross and the resurrection. In order to succeed, you must be wise. If you're foolish, you can't succeed. Success is closely related to wisdom. The word “success” in the Old Testament is “Saqal(שָׂכַל)” in Hebrew. It means “to act wisely” or “to handle with care.” To succeed is to act wisely. The Hebrew word for success contains wisdom. Therefore, to seek success is to seek wisdom.

Fourth, God makes people successful through good encounters. The grace of success that Nehemiah prayed for is God's grace bestowed through good encounters. “‘O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.’ I was cupbearer to the king” (Nehemiah 1:11). Nehemiah knew that he needed the help of King Artaxerxes to complete the mission God entrusted to him - to rebuild the walls. He could not complete God's task alone. In order to accomplish God's task, there must be the grace of a good encounter. Seek the grace of success to accomplish the task entrusted to you. Also, ask for the grace of success for our children “O Lord, save us; O Lord, grant us success” (Psalm 118:25). I hope that you will complete your mission well through the grace of success.
