     십자가에서 상처 입으신 예수님을 만납니다. 로마 병사들은 예수님을 채찍질했습니다. 그들이 사용한 채찍은 단순한 도구가 아닙니다. 고통을 극대화하기 위해 설계된 형벌 도구입니다. 짧은 손잡이에 여러 가닥의 가죽 끈이 매여 있고, 그 끝마다 뼛조각이나 납덩어리가 매달려 있습니다. 이 채찍은 단순히 때리는 것이 아니라 피부를 찢어내기 위해 만들어졌습니다. 채찍이 내리쳐지고 다시 당겨질 때마다 살점이 뜯겨 나갔습니다.

로마 병사들은 예수님의 머리에 가시 면류관을 씌웠습니다. 가시는 상처를 내어 피를 흘리게 했습니다. 그러나 육체의 고통보다 더 깊은 상처는 마음의 고통입니다. 사람들은 예수님을 조롱하고 희롱하며 침을 뱉었습니다. 갈대로 머리를 때리고 뺨을 치며, 옷을 벗겨 수치와 모멸을 안겼습니다. 예수님은 거절과 버림받음의 깊은 상처를 받으셨습니다. 사람들은 예수님을 욕하고 저주했습니다.

예수님은 인간이 받을 수 있는 모든 상처를 몸과 마음에 받으셨습니다. 상처투성이가 되셨고, 피투성이가 되셨습니다. 마지막에는 로마 병사가 창으로 예수님의 옆구리를 찔렀습니다. 그 옆구리에서 피와 물이 흘러나왔습니다(요 19:34). 예수님이 받으신 고난과 상처는 우리의 죄 때문입니다. 흠 없고 점 없는 어린 양 같은 예수님께서 우리를 위해, 우리의 죄를 대신하여 상처를 받으셨습니다. 예수님의 가장 큰 고통은 하나님 아버지께 버림받는 경험이었습니다. “나의 하나님, 나의 하나님, 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까”(마 27:46).

상처는 아픕니다. 상처는 피를 흘리게 합니다. 상처가 깊어지면 고름이 생기고, 치유되지 않으면 생명을 위협합니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 극심한 상처를 받으셨습니다. 왜 하나님 아버지는 사랑하는 독생자 예수님께 이토록 혹독한 고난을 허락하셨을까요? 우리의 죄를 용서하시기 위함입니다. 우리의 죄를 십자가에서 심판하시고, 죄인 된 우리를 구원하시기 위함입니다. 죄의 삯은 사망입니다(롬 6:23). 죄에는 반드시 대가가 따릅니다. 그 대가는 사망입니다. 예수님께서 우리 대신 그 값을 치르셨습니다.

사람들과 제자들은 십자가에서 모든 것이 끝났다고 생각했습니다. 그러나 십자가는 끝이 아니라 부활로 가는 길이었습니다. 사탄은 예수님의 발꿈치를 쳤지만, 예수님은 십자가에서 사탄의 머리를 치셨습니다. 사망을 이기시고 죽음을 깨뜨리셨습니다. 그리고 사흘 만에 부활하셨습니다. 무덤은 빈 무덤이 되었습니다. 빈 무덤은 부활의 증거입니다.

예수님의 상처는 치유되었지만, 부활하신 후에도 상흔(傷痕)은 남아 있었습니다. 그 상처에서 인류의 죄를 씻는 피와 물이 흘러나왔습니다. 예수님의 피는 하나님의 아들의 피입니다. 곧 하나님의 피입니다. 구약에서는 속죄를 위해 짐승의 피를 사용했습니다. 그러나 그 피는 죄를 덮을 뿐, 제거하지는 못했습니다. 하지만 예수님의 피는 죄를 완전히 제거하는 능력의 피입니다.

우리는 예수님의 십자가를 사랑합니다. 그 이유는 예수님께서 우리를 사랑하셔서 대신 상처를 받으셨기 때문입니다. 더욱 놀라운 사실은 예수님의 상처가 우리의 상처를 치유한다는 것입니다. “상처가 상처를 치유한다,”는 말이 있습니다. 예수님은 상처를 경험하셨기에 상처 입은 우리의 고통을 아십니다. 그래서 상처 입은 치유자로 우리를 치유하십니다. 그리고 우리에게 부활의 은총을 베푸십니다.

부활은 다시 살아나는 것입니다. 다시 시작하는 것입니다. 부활은 치유입니다. 회복입니다. 그러나 부활은 그것을 넘어서는 영광입니다. 부활하신 예수님의 몸은 시간과 공간을 초월하는 신비로운 몸이었습니다. 예수님은 부활이요 생명이십니다(요 11:25). 그를 믿는 자는 부활에 참여하게 됩니다. 그러므로 우리의 가장 복된 소망은 부활의 소망입니다. 바울은 그 부활의 능력이 성령님 안에서 우리 안에 역사한다고 말합니다. “그의 힘의 위력으로 역사하심을 따라 믿는 우리에게 베푸신 능력의 지극히 크심이 어떠한 것을 알게 하시기를 구하노라”(엡 1:19).

예수님은 상처 입은 십자가 나무에서 피어난 부활의 꽃이십니다. 또한 부활의 첫 열매이십니다(고전 15:20). 부활의 소식은 우리 모두에게 복된 소식입니다. 우리는 십자가를 사랑합니다. 우리는 부활의 능력을 의지합니다. 우리가 가진 상처는 끝이 아닙니다. 하나님은 언제나 상처 위에 부활의 꽃을 피우시는 분입니다. 예수님의 상흔은 실패의 흔적이 아니라 사랑의 증거입니다. 오늘도 주님의 상처가 우리의 상처를 품고 치유합니다. 그러므로 우리는 절망하지 않습니다. 우리는 십자가에서 끝나는 사람이 아니라 부활로 다시 시작하는 사람입니다. 우리는 상처 때문에 무너지는 사람이 아니라 부활 때문에 다시 일어서는 사람입니다. 하나님은 우리의 끝에서 시작하시는 분입니다. 부활하신 예수님을 바라보십시오. 당신의 상처 위에도 반드시 부활의 꽃이 피어날 것입니다. 십자가의 사랑과 부활의 능력으로 날마다 승리하시길 빕니다.

The Flower of Resurrection Blooming on the Wounded Tree of the Cross

   We encounter Jesus, wounded upon the cross. The Roman soldiers flogged Him. The whip they used was not a simple instrument—it was a tool designed to maximize pain. Multiple leather strands were attached to a short handle, and at the ends were pieces of bone or lumps of lead. This whip was not meant merely to strike, but to tear flesh apart. Each time it lashed and was pulled back, His flesh was ripped away.

The Roman soldiers placed a crown of thorns on Jesus’ head. The thorns pierced His skin and caused Him to bleed. Yet deeper than physical pain is the pain of the heart. People mocked Him, ridiculed Him, and spat on Him. They struck His head with a reed, slapped His face, stripped Him of His clothes, and subjected Him to shame and humiliation. Jesus bore the deep wounds of rejection and abandonment. People hurled insults and curses at Him.

Jesus endured every kind of wound that a human being can suffer, in both body and soul. He was covered in wounds and drenched in blood. In the end, a Roman soldier pierced His side with a spear, and blood and water flowed out (John 19:34). The suffering and wounds He bore were because of our sin. Jesus, the spotless and blameless Lamb, was wounded for us, taking our place. His greatest agony was the experience of being forsaken by God the Father: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).

Wounds are painful. Wounds cause bleeding. When they deepen, they fester, and if left untreated, they threaten life itself. Jesus suffered extreme wounds on the cross. Why would God the Father allow His beloved Son to endure such severe suffering? It was to forgive our sins. It was to judge our sins at the cross and to save us who are sinners. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Sin always carries a cost, and that cost is death. Jesus paid that price on our behalf.

People and even His disciples thought that everything had ended at the cross. But the cross was not the end—it was the path to resurrection. Satan struck at His heel, but through the cross Jesus crushed the serpent’s head. He overcame death and broke its power. On the third day, He rose again. The tomb became empty, and the empty tomb stands as the evidence of resurrection.

Although Jesus’ wounds were healed, the scars remained even after His resurrection. From those wounds flowed the blood and water that cleanse humanity’s sin. The blood of Jesus is the blood of the Son of God—the very blood of God. In the Old Testament, the blood of animals was used for atonement, but it could only cover sin, not remove it. The blood of Jesus, however, has the power to completely take away sin.

We love the cross of Jesus because He loved us and was wounded in our place. Even more astonishing is this truth: His wounds heal our wounds. There is a saying, “Wounds heal wounds.” Because Jesus experienced suffering, He understands the pain of our wounds. As the wounded healer, He restores us and grants us the grace of resurrection.

Resurrection means coming back to life. It means beginning again. Resurrection is healing and restoration—but it is also glory beyond them. The resurrected body of Jesus transcended time and space. Jesus is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25). Whoever believes in Him will share in that resurrection. Therefore, our greatest and most blessed hope is the hope of resurrection. The Apostle Paul declares that this resurrection power is at work within us through the Holy Spirit: “That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead” (Ephesians 1:19).

Jesus is the flower of resurrection that bloomed on the wounded tree of the cross. He is also the first fruits of the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:20). The message of resurrection is good news for all of us. We love the cross, and we rely on the power of the resurrection. The wounds we carry are not the end. God is the One who causes resurrection flowers to bloom upon our wounds. The scars of Jesus are not marks of failure, but testimonies of love. Even today, His wounds embrace and heal ours. Therefore, we do not despair. We are not people who end at the cross, but people who begin again in resurrection. We are not those who collapse because of our wounds, but those who rise again because of resurrection. God is the One who begins at our end. Fix your eyes on the risen Jesus. Upon your wounds, too, the flower of resurrection will surely bloom. May you live each day in victory through the love of the cross and the power of the resurrection.
