섬 밖을 나오니 섬이 보입니다!

이른 아침 오션사이드에서 목회서신을 씁니다. 저희 가족은 오랫동안 오션사이드에서 여름휴가를 보내고 있습니다. 언제부턴가 우리 가족의 전통이 되었습니다. 왜 오션사이드를 반복해서 찾아오는지 그 이유를 잘 모릅니다. 하지만 오션사이드를 재방문하는 것을 보면 오션사이드가 제게 주는 아름다움이 있는 것이 분명합니다. 하워드 가드너는 《진선미》라는 책에서 아름다움을 재방문하고 싶은 마음으로 표현했습니다(북스넛, 81쪽). 우리는 아름다운 자연이나, 아름다운 광경이나, 아름다운 사람을 보면 우리 눈길이 오랫동안 머무는 것을 경험하게 됩니다. 또한 다시 방문하고 싶고, 다시 보고 싶은 느낌을 갖습니다.

하워드 가드너는 그의 책에서 아름다움이 주는 기억에 대해 언급합니다. 그는 아름다움은 놀라운 기억을 형성한다고 말합니다. 우리는 아름다운 광경을 보면 오랫동안 기억합니다. 기억은 정말 신비로운 것입니다. 아름다운 추억을 오랫동안 간직한다는 것이 신비롭습니다. 오션사이드는 바닷가에 위치해 있습니다. 파도 소리와 함께 거대한 바닷소리를 듣게 됩니다. 끝이 보이지 않는 바다를 바라보면 가슴이 확 트이는 느낌입니다. 정말 태평양 바다는 거대합니다. 하나님은 이토록 큰 수족관을 소유하고 계신 분입니다. 바다 속의 부요함과 풍성함은 상상을 초월합니다. 바다는 72억의 인류에게 먹거리를 제공해 줍니다. 수많은 고기를 나누어 주고, 매년 수많은 고기를 다시 키웁니다. 그런 면에서 바다는 인류의 보배입니다. 아끼고 잘 돌보아야 하는 생명줄입니다.

우리 기억 속에는 좋은 기억만 있는 것이 아닙니다. 작년 7월에 오션사이드를 내려오는 길에 기억하고 싶지 않은 소식을 들었습니다. 아내가 폐암일 수 있다는 소식이었습니다. 수많은 검사를 앞에 두고 우리 가족은 휴가를 보내야 했습니다. 휴가를 마치고 돌아오는 길에, 우리 부부는 다시 오션사이드를 방문할 수 있을까라는 생각을 했습니다. 우리는 말이 없었지만 생각은 같았습니다. 지난 일 년은 수많은 강을 건너고 산을 넘었던 해입니다. 뜨거운 풀무 불을 통과했던 해입니다. 제 아내에게는 큰 수술을 한 흔적이 남아 있습니다. 아직도 연약한 가운데 있지만 아내와 가족과 더불어 오션사이드를 다시 찾게 된 것은 놀라운 하나님의 은혜입니다.

저는 누구보다 안식의 중요성을 강조하는 목회자입니다. 안식은 하나님의 원리입니다. 안식을 통해 우리 삶은 더욱 풍성해 집니다. 하나님은 일주일에 한번은 안식하도록 명하셨습니다. 또한 땅도 7년에 한번은 안식할 수 있도록 배려해 줄 것을 명하셨습니다. 인간은 유한합니다. 그래서 정기적으로 안식의 시간을 가져야 합니다. 마치 면도기를 정기적으로 충전해 주는 것처럼 우리에게는 재충전하는 시간이 필요합니다. 안식은 사치가 아니라 풍성한 삶을 살도록 배려해 주신 하나님의 아이디어입니다. 가장 위험한 지도자는 쉬지 않는 지도자라고 말합니다. 쉼이 없으면 여유가 없습니다. 쉼이 없으면 짜증이 납니다. 쉼이 없으면 쉽게 지치고, 화를 내게 됩니다. 쉼이 없으면 분별력을 상실함으로 잘못된 선택과 결정을 할 수 있습니다.

인간은 안식을 통해 영감을 받게 됩니다. 안식을 통해 하나님과 교제하게 됩니다. 하나님의 음성에 귀를 기울이게 됩니다. 안식을 통해 신비로운 지혜를 얻게 됩니다. 창조적인 아이디어를 얻게 됩니다. 안식은 나무꾼이 도끼날을 가는 것과 같습니다. 나무꾼의 도끼날이 무디면 나무를 잘 벨 수가 없습니다. 도끼날을 가는 것은 낭비가 아니라 지혜입니다(전 10:10). 안식은 철 연장의 날을 가는 시간입니다. 물론 휴가를 떠나야만 안식할 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. 우리는 주일마다 안식하며 하나님을 예배하며 성도님들과 교제하는 중에 안식할 수 있습니다. 날마다 말씀 앞에 머물러 안식할 수 있습니다. 하지만 때로는 삶의 터전을 잠시 떠나 안식하는 시간이 필요합니다.

며칠 전에 서울하남교회 방성일목사님이 제게 보내주신 글을 읽는 중에 울림이 있었습니다. “섬 밖을 나오니 섬이 보입니다.”라는 글이었습니다. 섬 안에 있으면 섬의 모습을 볼 수 없습니다. 섬 밖을 나와야 섬이 보입니다. 여행이 좋은 것은 여행을 통해 우리 삶을 멀리서 바라 볼 수 있기 때문입니다. 문제 속에 있는 사람은 자신의 문제를 잘 모릅니다. 문제 속에 산다는 것은 고통스러운 일입니다. 하지만 고통에 익숙해지면 고통 속에 사는 것이 인생인줄 알게 됩니다. 문제를 해결하려면 먼저 문제를 인식해야 합니다. 문제를 문제로 바라볼 줄 알아야 합니다. 그래야 해결책을 찾게 됩니다. 인생의 문제는 관점의 문제입니다. 무엇을 보고, 어디서 보느냐에 따라 모든 것이 달라집니다. 휴가는 우리 관점을 새롭게 만들어줍니다. 저는 이민 목회를 오랫동안 하면서 일년에 며칠이라도 휴가를 낼 수 없는 분들이 많다는 것을 압니다. 그래서 휴가를 올 때마다 미안한 마음을 갖습니다. 이민 생활이 무척 힘이 드실 것입니다. 하지만 올해는 꼭 시간을 내어 하루 이틀만이라도 안식의 시간을 가지시면 좋겠습니다. 섬 밖을 나오니 섬이 보입니다.

Now That I Got Off The Island, I Can See The Island!

I write this pastoral letter, early in the morning, in Oceanside. My family has spent summer vacations in Oceanside every year for a long time. It has become a tradition of our family. I do not know why we come to Oceanside again and over again. But, when I see myself revisiting Oceanside, there must be some kind of beauty that Oceanside has. Howard Gardner expressed beauty as, “a desire to revisit” in his book called "Truth, Beauty, and Goodness Reframed.” When we see the beauty of nature, the beautiful scenery, or beautiful people, we experience our gaze to be lengthened. We have a desire to revisit and to see again.

In his book, Howard Gardner talks about how we have memories that is given by beauty. He says that beauty forms a wonderful memory. We remember a beautiful sight for a long time. Memory is indeed mysterious. It is mysterious to keep beautiful memories for a long time. Oceanside is located on a beach. I hear a huge sea sound with the sound of waves. When I look at the endless sea, my heart feels refreshed. The Pacific Ocean is huge. God has such a large aquarium. The richness and abundance in the sea is beyond our imagination. The sea provides food for 7.2 billion people. It distributes a lot of fish and grows a lot of new fish every year. In that sense, the sea is the treasure of mankind. It is a lifeline that we should look after with care.

Not all of our memories are good. Last year in July, on my way down to Oceanside, I received news of something that I do not want to remember. It was the news of how my wife might have lung cancer. Our family had to spend vacation with waiting for countless upcoming exams. On the way back from our vacation, we wondered if we could revisit Oceanside again. We did not say anything, but we shared the same thought. The past year was like crossing many rivers and mountains. It was like passing through the blazing furnace. My wife now has a scar from her big surgery. It is through the amazing grace of God that my wife and our family can revisit Oceanside even though she is still in weakness.

I emphasize the importance of rest more than anyone else. Rest is the principle of God. Through rest, our lives become more abundant. God commanded us to rest once a week. He also commanded us to take care of the land so that it can rest once every seven years. Humans are finite. That is why men and women should have a time of rest periodically. We need time to recharge just as an electronic shaver needs to be regularly charged. Rest is not luxury, but God's idea for us to live a rich life. It is said that the most dangerous leaders are those who do not rest. Where there is no rest, there is no space. We get annoyed when there is no rest. We become easily tired and angry when we don’t rest. Where there is no rest, we lose a sense of discernment, which leads to wrong choices or decisions.

Human gets inspired through rest. Through rest we have fellowship with God. We listen to God’s voice. Through rest we obtain mysterious wisdom. We get creative ideas. Rest is like the woodcutter sharpening the edge of an ax. Sharpening the edge of an ax is not a waste of time but wisdom. (Ecc 10:10) Rest is the period of sharpening the edge of the iron tools. Of course, it is not necessary to take a vacation to rest. We can rest every Sunday by worshiping God and having fellowship with the saints. We can rest by staying before the Word every day. But we sometimes need a time of rest leaving our lives behind for a while.

A few days ago, there was an echo while reading an article sent by Pastor Bang Seong Il from Seoul Ha Nam Church. In the article it said, "When I get off of the island, I can see the island." If you are on an island, you cannot see the island. You can see the island once you get off of it. Traveling is good because we can look at our lives from a distance. Those who are in the midst of trouble cannot see their problem well. Living in trouble is painful. But once you get used to the pain, you understand that living in pain is life. You must recognize the problem before you can fix it. You need to be able to look at the problem as it is. That’s how you can find a solution. The problem of life is a matter of perspective. Everything depends on what you choose to see and where you look. Vacation renews our perspectives. As I ministered to the immigrant community for a long time, I know that there are many who can’t take a vacation for even just a few days in a year. So, I feel sorry whenever I take a vacation. Immigration life will be very tough. But I wish you can take off a day or two to rest. When I get off of the island, I can see the island.
