[목회서신] 나무에게 배우는 기다림의 영성 (2018.11.25)

가을이 깊어지고 있습니다. 또한 겨울이 서서히 찾아오고 있습니다. 가을이 되면 왠지 낙엽의 영성을 노래하는 글이 쓰고 싶습니다. 가을이 깊어지면 나목(裸木)이 된 겨울나무에 대한 글을 쓰고 싶습니다. 수많은 시인들이 낙엽을 노래했습니다. 그 이유는 낙엽을 통해 깊은 영성을 배울 수 있기 때문입니다. 낙엽은 가을이 오기까지 조용히 기다립니다. 낙엽은 오랜 기다림 끝에 붉고 아름답게 자신을 물들인 다음, 나무에서 사푼히 내려옵니다. 그가 할 일을 다 한 후에 땅으로 내려옵니다. 낙엽은 땅으로 내려와 거름이 되어 다시 나무를 키웁니다. 낙엽은 끝까지 자신을 희생함으로 그의 생애를 마감합니다. 낙엽에게서 내려오는 영성을 배웁니다. 자신을 낮추는 영성을 배웁니다. 끝까지 자신을 희생하는 영성을 배웁니다. 비료가 되어 자신을 감추면서 나무를 살찌우는 영성을 배웁니다.

저는 겨울나무에게서 깊은 영성을 배웁니다. 나무는 겨울이 되면 서서히 옷을 벗습니다. 그렇게 함으로 자신을 가볍게 합니다. 그렇게 함으로 자신을 비웁니다. 벗음과 비움은 참으로 깊은 영성입니다. 벗음이 있기에 입음이 있고, 비움이 있기에 채움이 있습니다. 하나님은 베옷을 벗기시고 기쁨으로 띠를 띠우시는 분입니다(시 30:11). 하나님은 요셉이 감옥에서 입었던 죄수의 옷을 벗기시고 국무총리의 옷을 입혀 주셨습니다. 고난의 옷을 벗기시고, 환희의 옷을 입혀 주셨습니다. 예수님은 가나혼인 잔치에서 포도주가 떨어졌을 때 빈 항아리 여섯을 포도주로 가득 채워 주셨습니다. 빈 항아리의 역설적 축복입니다. 비움이 있었기에 풍성한 채움이 있었습니다.

겨울나무의 벗음과 비움은 새로운 시작을 위한 몸짓입니다. 겨울나무의 몸짓을 통해 우리는 봄을 기다립니다. 어느덧 겨울 속에 봄이 시작되었음을 느낍니다. 겨울나무 속에 푸른 봄이 담겨 있고, 아름다운 꽃이 담겨 있습니다. 우리는 늘 전체적으로 보는 눈을 키워야 합니다. 멀리 보는 안목을 키워야 합니다. 모든 것을 연결시켜 볼 줄 알아야 합니다. 조금 더 깊이 볼 줄 알아야 합니다. 나무의 뿌리가 땅 속에서 은밀하게 자라고 있는, 성스러운 변화를 응시할 수 있는 눈을 키워야 합니다. 그때 우리는 서두르거나 조급해 하지 않을 수 있습니다.

나무는 조급해 하지 않습니다. 나무는 언제나 서서히 자랍니다. 조급한 것은 어리석은 것입니다. 조급한 사람들이 사람을 속입니다. 무엇이든지 당장, 지금 끝장을 보자는 사람들을 조심해야 합니다. 또한 서두르는 사람들이 쉽게 속임을 당합니다. 급할수록 돌아가야 합니다. “서두름에는 축복이 깃들지 않는다.”라는 아프리카 격언을 기억할 필요가 있습니다. 필요할 때 속도를 내는 것은 중요합니다. 응급환자를 치료하기 위해 속도를 내는 것은 필요합니다. 하지만 무슨 일이든지 조급하게 처리하려는 것은 결코 지혜롭지 않습니다. 아름다운 일들은 기다림 속에 이루어집니다. 우리 자녀들은 기다림을 통해 성장합니다. 견고한 건물은 서서히 건축됩니다.

겨울나무는 옷을 벗은 후에 뿌리를 가꾸기 시작합니다. 겨울이 되면 나무는 모든 외부 활동을 중단합니다. 겨울을 나는 동안 모든 에너지를 뿌리를 키우는데 집중합니다. 겨울의 기다림은 나무에게, 뿌리를 키우는 시간입니다. 기다림은 키움입니다. 기다리는 동안 뿌리는 커집니다. 든든해집니다. 뿌리를 가꾼다는 것은 근본(根本)을 다지는 것입니다. 근본이라는 단어는 “뿌리” 근(根)과 “밑” 본(本)이라는 단어의 조합입니다. 이 단어 속에 뿌리, 기본, 근원, 근간, 기초라는 뜻이 내포되어 있습니다. 고수(高手)는 기본에 충실하며, 정기적으로 기본을 다집니다. 깊은 영성은 뿌리 깊은 영성입니다. 예수님께 깊이 뿌리를 내리는 영성이 깊은 영성입니다(골 2:6-7). 아래로 성장하는 영성이 뿌리 깊은 영성입니다. 내면을 돌보는 영성이 뿌리 깊은 영성입니다. 속사람을 성령님의 능력으로 강건하게 하는 영성이 뿌리 깊은 영성입니다(엡 3:16).

저는 나무를 통해 기다림의 영성을 배웁니다. 기다림의 시간은 낭비가 아닙니다. 성스러운 투자입니다. 기다림은 기도의 시간입니다. 기다림은 하나님을 의지하며, 모든 것을 하나님께 맡기는 시간입니다. 우리가 기도하며 기다릴 때 하나님이 우리를 대신해서 일해 주십니다. 요셉이 감옥에서 기다리는 동안, 하나님은 요셉을 위해 바로의 꿈을 준비해 주셨습니다. 요셉은 바로의 꿈을 해석해 줌으로 역사의 무대에 서게 됩니다. 산모가 아이를 잉태하고 기다리는 동안 아이는 엄마의 자궁 안에서 서서히 자랍니다. 생명은 서두르지 않습니다. 생명은 서서히 자랍니다. 그래서 생명이 고귀한 것입니다. 인생이란 기다림입니다. 사랑한다는 것은 기다리는 것입니다. 우리는 사랑하는 것만큼 기다리고, 사랑하는 것만큼 오래 참습니다(고전 13:4, 7). 기다림은 동경입니다. 이 시대의 비극은 기다림 속에 싹트는 그리움이 사라지고 있다는 것입니다. 깊어져 가는 가을, 우리 함께 기다림의 영성을 가꾸는 성숙한 그리스도인이 되었으면 좋겠습니다.

The Spirituality of Waiting That We Learn from Trees

Autumn is passing. Winter is slowly coming. I want to write a song about the spirituality of fallen leaves in this time of autumn. When autumn deepens, I want to write about a winter tree that becomes a bare tree. Many poets sang about fallen leaves. The reason is because you can learn deep spirituality through the fallen leaves. The fallen leaves wait silently until autumn. At the end of their long waiting, the leaves color themselves beautifully red, then lightly descend from the tree. After finishing all their tasks, they fall to the ground. The fallen leaves go down to the ground and become manure for the tree to grow. The fallen leaves end their lives by sacrificing themselves to the end. We learn the spirituality coming from fallen leaves. We learn the spirituality of lowering oneself. We learn the spirituality of sacrificing oneself to the end. We learn the spirituality of being manure and fattens the trees while hiding itself.

I learn deep spirituality from the winter tree. When winter comes, trees slowly take off their clothes. By doing so, they lighten themselves. They empty themselves. Taking off and emptying is truly a deep spirituality. There is wearing because there is taking off, and there is filling because there is emptying. God removes our sackcloth and clothes us with joy (Ps 30:11). God removed the prison’s garments from Joseph while he was in prison and clothed him with the garments of a prime minister. He removed the clothes of suffering and clothed him with joy. Jesus filled up six empty jars with wine when the wine was gone during the wedding banquet at Cana. It was a paradoxical blessing of an empty jar. There was abundant filling because there was emptying.

The taking off and emptying of winter trees is a gesture for a new beginning. Through the gestures of the winter trees, we wait for spring. We feel, without realizing, that spring has started in winter. Winter trees are filled with the greenery of spring and beautiful flowers. We must always enlarge our eyes to see the whole. We need to develop our eyes to see afar. We must know how to see and connect everything. We need to know how to look a little deeper. We must develop eyes that can gaze upon sacred changes like the roots of trees growing secretly in the ground. Then we won’t be haste or impatient.

Trees are not impatient and always grow slowly. Impatience is foolishness. People who are impatient deceive people. You must be careful with those who want to end whatever right now. Also, people who are in a hurry are easily deceived. You must go around as you are hurried. You need to remember the African proverb that "haste has no blessing." Speed is important when you need it. It is necessary to speed up when treating emergency patients. But it is never wise to do anything urgently. Beautiful things are done through waiting. Our children grow through waiting. Solid buildings are built up slowly.

Winter trees begin to cultivate their roots after taking off their clothes. During the winter, the tree stops all “outside” activities. They put all their energy on growing their roots during the winter. For the trees, waiting during the winter is to grow their roots. Waiting is to nurture and raise up. The roots grow while waiting. It becomes strong. Cultivating the roots means to master the basis. The word “basis (根本)” in Chinese is a combination of the words "root" (根) and "bottom" (本). This word implies root, basis, origin, foundation, and basics. Master(高手) is faithful to the basics and regularly learns the basics. Deep spirituality is the deep-rooted spirituality. Deep spirituality is when you are deeply rooted in Jesus (Col 2:6-7). Spirituality that grows downwards is the deep-rooted spirituality. Spirituality that cares for the inner-self is the deeply-rooted spirituality. It is the deeply-rooted spirituality that strengthens the inner man by the power of the Holy Spirit (Eph 3:16).

I learn the spirituality of waiting through trees. Waiting is not a waste of time. It is a sacred investment. Waiting is the time for prayer. Waiting is the time to trust God and entrust everything to God. When we pray and wait, God works on our behalf. While Joseph waited in prison, God prepared Pharaoh's dream for Joseph. Joseph stands on the stage of history by interpreting Pharaoh’s dream. While the mother conceives and waits for a child, the child slowly grows in her mother's womb. Life does not haste. Life grows slowly. Life is noble. Life is waiting. To love is to wait. We wait as long as we love, and we persevere as long as we love (1Co 13:4,7). Waiting is longing. The tragedy of this age is that the nostalgia that sprouts while waiting is disappearing. I hope that we will become a mature Christian who will grow in the spirituality of waiting in the deepening autumn.
