[목회서신] 배움은 소중한 선물입니다!

배움은 하나님이 우리에게 주신 소중한 선물입니다. 예수님은 “내게 와서 배우라”(마 11:29)고 초청하십니다. 누가는 예수님이 12살 때, 성전에서 겸손히 “선생들 중에 앉으사 그들에게 듣기도 하시며 묻기도 하시니”(눅 2:46)라고 기록했습니다. 예수님이 친히 배움의 모범을 보여주신 것을 기록한 것입니다. 배운다는 것은 참으로 아름다운 것입니다. 배움이 아름다운 것은 배우는 사람의 겸손한 성품 때문입니다. 교만한 사람은 배우지 않습니다. 하지만 자신이 부족하다고 느끼는 사람은 늘 배웁니다. 일평생 배웁니다. 나이가 들어도 지속적으로 배우는 사람은 아름답습니다.

우리는 지난주일 오대원(David Ross) 목사님과 엘렌 로스(Ellen Ross) 사모님을 만나는 축복을 누렸습니다. 저는 지난주일 엘렌 사모님께서 쓰신 《기쁨의 여정》이란 책을 꼭 읽으시도록 추천해 드렸습니다. 많은 분들이 구입해 주셔서 감사드립니다. 사모님께서 책을 출판하신 후에 저자 인터뷰를 하신 중에 “종신 선교사로 60년간 한국을 품으며 가장 기억에 남는 건 무엇인가요?”라는 질문을 받으셨습니다. 사모님은 “참 사랑을 배운 것 같아요.”라고 대답하셨습니다. 엘렌 사모님은 “결국 사랑한 것만 남았습니다.”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 특별히 저자 인터뷰 마지막에 남기신 말씀이 가장 큰 울림으로 다가왔습니다. “지금도 하나님이 주시는 사랑을 계속 배우고 있어요.” 정말 놀라운 고백이 아닐 수 없습니다. 우리도 계속 하나님의 사랑을 배워야 합니다.

저는 인생을 아름답게 마무리한 분들의 생애에 관심이 많습니다. 이번에 오대원 목사님을 만나면서, 다시 한 번 아름다운 끝마무리를 하고 싶다는 소원을 품게 되었습니다. 《하프 타임》이란 책으로 알려진 밥 버포드(Bob Buford)가 달라스 신학교의 하워드 헨드릭스 교수님께 다음과 같이 질문했습니다. “삶을 잘 마무리한 사람은 어떻습니까? 그 사람들의 특징은 무엇이던가요?” 교수님의 답변은 지속적인 배움에 대한 강조였습니다. “우선 그 사람들은 끊임없이 배웁니다. 살아 있는 한 배우는 것입니다. 오늘 배우기를 멈추면, 내일 성장도 멈춥니다. 나이 든 사람 중에는 모든 것을 내던지고 사는 사람이 많더군요. ... 아주 위험한 일입니다.”

헨드릭스 교수님은 삶을 잘 마무리한 사람의 또 하나의 특징은, 목적 지향적인 삶을 사는 것이라고 강조합니다. 목적 지향적인 삶이란 사명을 따라 사는 것입니다. 돈이나 어떤 위치와 상관없이 하나님이 부르신 일을 지속하는 것입니다. 시몬 드 보부아르는 《노년》이란 책에서 인생을 잘 마무리하는 확실한 두 가지 비법을 소개합니다. “첫 번째는 은퇴하기 전에 하는 일과 은퇴한 후에 하는 일 사이에 연관성을 유지하는 것입니다. 두 번째는 노년에도 계획을 세우고, 추구하는 일을 품고 살아가는 것입니다.”(밥 버포드, 『하프타임 고수들』, 국제제자훈련원, 380쪽, 재인용). 오스 기니스는 “직업에서 은퇴할 수 있어도 소명에서 은퇴할 수 없다.”라고 말합니다. 이 땅에 태어난 각 사람에게는 사명이 주어져 있습니다. 그 사명을 따라 살 때 각 사람은 영원한 청춘으로 살아갈 수 있습니다. 가장 열정적으로 살아갈 수 있습니다.

사람은 오직 배움을 통해 지속적으로 성장하도록 창조되었습니다. 하나님이 인간에게 주신 가장 강력한 본능 중 하나는 “성장 본능”입니다. 사람은 배움을 통해 성장하고, 성장을 통해 놀라운 기쁨을 경험하게 됩니다. 하지만 성장은 저절로 되는 것이 아닙니다. 저절로 자라는 것은 잡초뿐입니다. 성장을 위해서는 의도적으로 배움을 선택해야 합니다. 육체적 성장은 고등학교를 졸업할 때가 되면 거의 멈추게 됩니다. 하지만 지적, 정서적, 그리고 영적 성장은 일평생 계속됩니다. 계속해서 배우십시오. 배움은 무거운 짐이 아니라 특권입니다. 하나님의 보배로운 선물입니다.

배움의 열매는 아름다운 성품입니다. 저는 아름답고 향기로운 성품으로 자신을 가꾸신 분들을 만날 때 감동을 받곤 합니다. 그분들은 겸손하고 온유합니다. 사람들을 차별 없이 존중합니다. 범사에 감사하고, 자족하며 살아갑니다. 신중하며 절제할 줄 압니다. 사랑과 선행을 격려합니다. 칭찬에 인색하지 않습니다. 용서하고 관용을 베풀 줄 압니다. 슬픈 일을 당하는 분들을 진심으로 위로해 줍니다. 가장 아름다운 배움의 열매는 사랑입니다. 참된 사랑은 네 가지 사랑으로 조화를 이룹니다. 하나님 사랑, 참된 자기 사랑, 가족 사랑 그리고 이웃 사랑입니다. 우리가 관심을 가져야 할 가장 소중한 배움이 하나 더 있습니다. 언제나 주님 얼굴을 바라보는 법을 배우는 것입니다.

엘렌 로스 사모님은 “기쁠 때에도 눈물이 날 때에도 혹 근심이 있을 때에도 주님 얼굴을 바라본 것이 내가 가장 잘한 일입니다.”라고 말씀합니다. 믿음의 눈으로 주님 얼굴을 늘 바라보십시오. 우리는 바라보는 대상을 사랑하고 닮게 되어 있습니다. 예수님의 얼굴을 늘 바라보는 중에 예수님을 닮아가는 것이 영화에 이르는 길입니다. 우리 함께 날마다 예수님의 얼굴을 바라보며 살아가도록 합시다. 기쁠 때도 슬플 때도 예수님의 얼굴을 바라봅시다.

Learning is a Precious Gift!

Learning is a precious gift that God has given us. Jesus invites us to "come and learn " (Mt 11:29). Luke wrote that when Jesus was twelve years old, he was humbly, "sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions” (Lk 2:46). Luke showed Jesus being a role model of learning. It is truly beautiful to learn. The beauty of learning is in respect to the humble character of the learner. Those who are prideful cannot learn. But those who feel insufficient always learn. They learn throughout their lives. Those who learn continuously, even when they become older, are beautiful.

We had the blessing of meeting Pastor David Ross and his wife, Ellen Ross last Sunday. I recommended reading the book, "Journey of Joy" by Mrs. Ellen last Sunday. I appreciated that many of you purchased the book. When she was being interviewed, after publishing her book, she was asked, “What is your most memorable experience of living in Korea for sixty years as a lifelong missionary?" She answered, "I think I learned true love." Mrs. Ellen said, "In the end, the only thing that was left was what I loved." Especially at the end of the interview, the words that she said echoed deeply in my heart, "I am still learning the love that God has given me." What a truly amazing confession! We must continue to learn the love of God.

I am interested in the life of those who have finished their lives beautifully. As I met with Pastor David Ross this time, I again had a desire that I would like to finish my life beautifully. Bob Buford, known as the author of "Half Time", asked Professor Howard Hendricks at Dallas Seminary: "What about those who did finish well? What traits would characterize them?” Prof. Hendricks’ answer emphasized on continuous learning. "For one thing, they continued to learn. As long as you live, you learn. If you stop learning today, you’ll stop growing tomorrow. I find that a lot of older people have thrown in the towel … That’s really risky.”

Prof. Hendricks emphasized that another characteristic of a person who had finished his life well was living a purpose-oriented life. Purpose-oriented life is to live according to a mission. Regardless of money or any position, it is to continue to do what God has called. In The Coming of Age, Simon de Beauvoir says there are really two secrets to finishing well. “One is maintaining continuity between what you do before you retire and what you do afterward. Second is having a sense that you have a project or task to pursue in your latter years.” (Bob Buford, “Finishing Well,” Zondervan, pg. 246) Os Guinness said, “We can retire from our jobs, but we can never retire from our calling.” Each person born on this earth is given a mission. When you live according to that mission, you can live as an eternal youth. You can live with the most passion.

Man is created to grow continuously only through learning. One of the most powerful instincts God has given to man is the "growth instinct." People grow through learning and experience wonderful joy through growth. But growth does not happen naturally. Only weeds grow naturally. To grow, you must intentionally choose to learn. Physical growth almost stops when you graduate from high school. But intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth will continue for a lifetime. Continue to learn. Learning is not a burden but a privilege. It is the precious gift of God.

The fruit of learning is beautiful character. I am impressed when I meet people who have cultivated themselves with beautiful and fragrant character. They are humble and gentle. They honor people without discrimination. They give thanks in all circumstances and live with contentment. They know how to be prudent and self-control. They encourage love and good deeds. They are not stingy with compliments. They know how to forgive and be generous. They sincerely comfort those who are in sorrow. The most beautiful fruit of learning is love. True love harmonizes with the four kinds of love. They love God, love the self, love family, and love their neighbors. There is one more precious lesson we should be interested in. It is to always learn to look upon the Lord's face.

Ellen Ross said, "It is best thing that I do; to look upon the face of the Lord when I was happy, when I had tears, and even when I had worries.” Always look upon the face of the Lord with the eyes of faith. We tend to love and resemble the one we look upon. It is the way to glorification to be like Jesus while always looking upon Jesus' face. Let us live each day, looking upon Jesus' face, together. Let us look upon Jesus' face when we are happy and sad.
