[목회서신] 꽃은 저마다 피는 계절이 따로 있습니다! (2019.03.31)

봄이 성큼 찾아왔습니다. 봄이 찾아온 것을 제가 알아차리도록 도와주는 것은 저희 집 대추나무입니다. 3월에 들어서면서 저희 집 대추나무에 새 싹이 나오기 시작했습니다. 오랜 기다림 속에 보게 되는 푸른 새 싹입니다. 살아 있다는 것은 위대한 것입니다. 살아 있기에 새 봄을 맞이한 것입니다. 지난겨울은 어느 해보다 비가 많이 내렸습니다. 많은 겨울비 덕분에 수많은 아름다운 야생화들이 들판을 가득 채우고 있습니다. 파피(poppy, 양귀비)를 비롯해서 이름도 잘 모르는 야생화들이 만발했습니다. 오랫동안 마른땅 속에 잠들어 있던 야생화 씨앗들이 긴 잠에서 깨어나 꽃을 피운 것입니다. 많은 분들이 꽃구경을 다녀오셔서 꽃 이야기로 꽃 피우고 있습니다.

저는 씨앗을 묵상하는 것을 좋아합니다. 씨앗 속에 아름다운 꽃이 담겨 있기 때문입니다. 풍성한 열매들이 담겨 있기 때문입니다. 거대한 나무가 담겨 있기 때문입니다. 씨앗은 신비롭습니다. 씨앗은 서두르지 않습니다. 씨앗은 기다리는 중에 적합한 때를 만나면, 싹을 틔운 후에 아름다운 꽃을 피웁니다. 어떤 씨앗은 잘 자라서 풍성한 열매를 맺고, 어떤 씨앗은 잘 자라서 거목(巨木)이 됩니다. 봄은 이미 겨울 속에 시작되었습니다. 겨울이 봄을 껴안고 살았습니다. 겨울 속에 담긴 봄을 바라볼 줄 아는 사람을 비전의 사람이라고 말합니다. 겨울 속에 담긴 봄을 볼 줄 아는 사람은 추운 겨울을 나무라지 않습니다. 오히려 추운 겨울을 고마워합니다.

우리는 계절을 통해 많은 것을 배웁니다. 우리가 계절을 통해 배울 수 있다면 서서히 철이 들기 시작한 것입니다. “철”이라는 말은 계절을 의미합니다. 철이 든다는 것은 인생의 사계절을 안다는 것입니다. 철이 든다는 것은 사계절 전체를 보고, 흐름을 파악한다는 것을 의미합니다. 사람이 철이 들 때 성장(成長)을 너머 성숙(成熟)에 이르게 됩니다. 또한 성숙(成熟)을 너머 원숙(圓熟)에 이르게 됩니다. 원숙한 사람은 전체를 보고 깊이 볼 줄 압니다. 원숙한 사람은 무엇보다 서두르지 않습니다. 그 이유는 만사에 때가 있다는 것을 알기 때문입니다. 추운 겨울에 꽃을 피게 할 수 없습니다. 하지만 봄이 되면 힘쓰지 않아도 새 싹이 돋고 꽃을 피웁니다. 인간은 조급합니다. 무엇이든 빨리 이루길 원합니다. 하지만 자연은 서두르는 법이 없습니다. 봄이 찾아오면 싹이 나오고 여름을 기다리면 녹음(綠陰)이 우거집니다. 가을을 기다리면 단풍을 구경할 수 있습니다. 겨울이 되어야 찬바람을 견디는 나목(裸木)을 볼 수 있습니다.

저는 이른 봄에 먼저 핀 꽃을 보면서 준비의 중요성을 배웁니다. 개나리와 진달래는 추운 겨울 동안 미리 준비하고 있다가, 봄이 오면 가장 먼저 꽃망울을 터뜨립니다. 우리 눈으로 개나리와 진달래가 겨울 동안 준비하는 것을 볼 수 없습니다. 하지만 남이 보지 않고 남이 볼 수 없을 때 준비하는 것이 지혜입니다. 모든 보이는 결과는, 눈에 보이지 않게 조용히 준비한 수고의 결실입니다. 봄에 준비한 꽃은, 봄에 꽃을 피우지 못합니다. 봄이 오기 전, 겨울에 준비해야 아름다운 꽃을 봄에 피울 수 있습니다.

겨울은 인생에서 시련을 의미합니다. 시련은 차갑습니다. 하지만 그 시련을 따뜻하게 껴안을 때, 그 시련 속에 축복의 씨앗이 담겨 있었다는 사실을 나중에야 깨닫게 됩니다. 시련을 껴안지 않으면 축복의 기회도 놓치게 됩니다. 봄은 기회를 의미합니다. 기회를 붙잡기 위해서는 겨울 동안 준비를 잘해야 합니다. 봄은 생각보다 빨리 지나갑니다. 봄이 왔다고 기뻐하는 중에 성큼 여름이 찾아오는 것을 봅니다. 인생의 기회도 마찬가지입니다. 기회는 생각보다 빨리 지나갑니다. 잘 준비된 사람만이 기회를 알아보고 기회를 붙잡을 수 있습니다. 지혜로운 사람은 과거를 소중히 여기되 과거에 매여 살지 않습니다. 과거는 이미 우리 곁을 떠났습니다. 과거는 돌이킬 수 없습니다. 그런 까닭에 과거를 소중히 여기되 과거로부터 과감히 떠나야 합니다. 또한 지혜로운 사람은 현재를 소중히 여기되 미래를 준비할 줄 압니다. 지혜란 미래를 준비하는 것입니다. 저는 두 가지 긴장 속에 삽니다. 그 긴장은 현재를 소중히 여기면서 동시에 미래를 준비하는 것입니다.

저는 이른 봄에 먼저 핀 꽃들을 향해 힘찬 박수를 보내지만 부러워하지는 않습니다. 초봄에 향기를 뽐내는 매화 꽃잎이 지면, 5월에 만개하는 장미꽃이 화려한 자태를 드러냅니다. 꽃은 저마다 피는 계절이 따로 있습니다. 개나리는 개나리대로, 매화는 매화대로, 장미는 장미대로, 동백은 동백대로 피어야 하는 계절이 있습니다. 세상이 아주 빠른 속도로 변화되고 있습니다. 하지만 자연은 여전히 서두르지 않습니다. 세상의 빠른 변화를 무시할 수 없습니다. 하지만 우리는 거듭 자연을 통해 서두르지 않는 법을 배워야 합니다. 그 이유는 우리 영혼은 너무 빠른 속도를 좋아하지 않기 때문입니다. 영혼은 잠잠히 하나님을 신뢰할 때 가장 큰 힘을 얻습니다(사 30:15). 그래서 오늘도 저는 하나님 앞에 고요히 머무는 시간을 갖습니다.

Each Flower Has Its Own Season of Blooming!

Spring has already come. A jujube tree in my house helps me to notice that spring is coming. As March began, new buds began to appear on the jujube tree of my house. I notice the green buds sprouted after a long wait. Being alive is a great thing. Because we are alive, we can welcome a new spring. Last winter, it was raining more than any other year. Thanks to the heavy winter rains, numerous beautiful wildflowers fill the fields. Including poppies, wildflowers that I do not even know the name of are in full bloom. Wildflower seeds that have been sleeping in dry land for a long time woke up from their long sleep and blossomed. Many people are returning from seeing the flowers and are blooming with stories of the flowers.

I like meditating on seeds. Because a beautiful flower is inside a seed. Because abundant fruit is inside a seed. Because a gigantic tree is inside a seed. Seeds are mysterious. Seeds do not haste. When seeds meet a suitable time after waiting, they bloom beautiful flowers after sprouting. Some seeds grow well to bear abundant fruit, and some seeds grow well to become gigantic trees. Spring has already begun in the winter. Winter survives embracing the spring. Those who know how to look at spring in the winter are called visionaries. Those who see the spring in the winter do not rebuke the cold winter. Rather, they appreciate it.

We learn many things through the seasons. If we can learn through the seasons, it means we have started to mature slowly. The word “철(mature)” in Korean has a meaning of season. To mature means to know the four seasons of life. It means to see the whole four seasons and grasp the flow. When people are maturing, they are led to “maturity” beyond just “growth”. Further, one is led to “full maturity” beyond “maturity”. A fully mature person can see the whole thing in depth. A fully mature person does not haste. The reason is that he knows that there is a time for everything. We cannot make a flower bloom in the cold winter. But in spring, new buds will bloom even if we do not work hard. Men are impatient. They want to accomplish everything quickly. But nature has no way to haste. When the spring comes, the buds come out, and if you wait for the summer, the trees will be leafy. If you wait for fall, you can see the fall leaves. In winter, you can see bare trees that endure cold winds.

I learn the importance of preparation when I notice the first flowers of early spring. Forsythia and azalea prepare themselves beforehand during the cold winter, and when spring comes, they are the first to bloom. We cannot see how forsythia and azalea prepare themselves during the winter with our eyes. But it is wisdom to prepare when others do not and cannot see you. All the visible results are the result of the labor that is prepared quietly and invisibly. Flowers prepared in the spring cannot bloom in the spring. Before spring comes, you must prepare during the winter so that you can enjoy beautiful flowers in the spring.

Winter means trials in life. The trial is cold. But when we embrace the trials warmly, we will realize later that the seeds of blessings were contained in the trials. If you do not accept the trials, you will miss the opportunity of blessing. Spring means opportunity. You need to be well prepared during the winter to seize the opportunity well. Spring passes faster than we think. These days, in the gladness that spring that has arrived, we find summer coming in full bloom. The same is true for life’s opportunities. Opportunity leaves us faster than we think. Only well-prepared people can recognize and seize the opportunity. A wise man cherishes the past, but does not live in the past. The past has already left us. We cannot reverse the past. Therefore, we must cherish the past, but boldly leave the past. Also, a wise man cherishes the present, and knows how to prepare for the future. Wisdom is to prepare for the future. I live between two tensions. The tension is to cherish the present and prepare for the future at the same time.

I applaud the flowers that bloom early in the spring, but I do not envy them. After the plum blossom petals, which showed off their fragrance in early spring, fall off, the rose bloom in May reveals a splendid appearance. Each flower has a season of blooming. There are seasons of blooming for each of forsythia, plum blossom, rose, and camelia. The world is changing at a very fast pace. But nature does not haste. We cannot ignore the rapid changes of the world. But we must learn from nature on how not to haste again and again. The reason is that our souls do not like the speed too fast. The soul has the greatest strength when it silently trusts in God (Isaiah 30:15). That is why today I spend time to rest quietly before God.
