[목회서신] 위기를 기회로 만드는 지혜 (2020.2.9)

위기(危機)는 위험(危險)과 기회(機會)라는 두 단어의 합성어입니다. 위기는 어떤 관점에서 보느냐에 따라 위험이 될 수도 있고 기회가 될 수도 있습니다. 가장 중요한 것은 관점입니다. 어떤 관점으로 위기를 보느냐에 따라 모든 것이 달라집니다. 위기를 위험으로 보는 사람들은 위험에 빠질 확률이 높습니다. 위기를 위험으로 여기면 두려워하게 됩니다. 두려워하게 되면 분별력을 상실하게 됩니다. 위기를 위험으로 보면 위기 속에 담긴 기회를 보지 못합니다. 위기를 기회로 보는 사람들은 위기 속에 담긴 기회를 포착해서 놀라운 결과를 만들어 낼 수 있습니다.

어떤 일에든지 양면이 있습니다. 양면을 보면서 문제를 풀어나가는 사람이 지혜로운 사람입니다. 오래 전에 읽은 글입니다. 신발을 파는 세일즈맨이, 아프리카에 가서 아무도 신발을 신지 않은 것을 보고 즉시 본사에 전문을 띄웠습니다. “신발 판매 불가. 아무도 신을 신지 않음.” 똑같은 지역에 다른 세일즈맨이 도착해서 원주민들이 아무도 신발을 신지 않은 것을 보고 즉시 본사에 전문을 띄웠습니다. “신발주문 배가. 수많은 사람들이 신발을 필요로 함.” 똑같은 사건을 보고도 한 사람은 부정적으로 해석하고, 다른 한 사람은 긍정적으로 해석했습니다.

우리는 가끔 우리가 전혀 예측하지 못한 위기에 직면하게 됩니다. 가장 중요한 것은 어떤 상황이든 침착하게 대응하는 것입니다. 어떤 사건이 갑자기 전개될 때 두려움이나 염려에 사로잡히지 않도록 해야 합니다. 무엇보다 평정심을 유지하는 것이 중요합니다. 물론 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 하지만 두려움이나 염려는 어떤 도움도 주지 않습니다. 제가 그동안 배우고 경험한 지혜 가운데 위기를 기회로 만드는 지혜를 몇 가지로 나누고 싶습니다.

첫째, 위기를 만났을 때 현실을 직시하십시오. 문제를 인정하십시오. 급히 대처해야 할 것은 대처하십시오. 불이 났으면 급히 불을 끄도록 하십시오. 몸이 아프면 바로 의사 선생님을 만나십시오. 필요하다면 마스크를 쓰십시오. 손을 비누로 자주 씻도록 하십시오. 동시에 위기가 기회가 될 수도 있다는 긍정적인 생각을 갖도록 하십시오. 지도자는 현실을 무시하는 사람이 아니라 현실을 규명(糾明)하는 사람입니다. 또한 지도자는 어려운 현실 속에서도 희망을 주는 사람입니다. 지도자는 문제 속에서 새로운 비전을 볼 줄 아는 사람입니다. 지도자는 위기를 기회로 만들어 낼 줄 아는 사람입니다.

둘째, 위기를 만났을 때 하나님께 나아가 기도하십시오. 위기의 때는 기도의 때입니다. 어떤 위기는 인간의 힘과 지혜로 해결하기 어렵습니다. 그때는 초자연적이며 초월적인 하나님의 지혜와 능력이 필요합니다. 어떤 위기는 오직 하나님이 개입해 주셔야 해결할 수 있는 위기가 있습니다. 하나님은 우리가 볼 수 없는 것을 보시는 분입니다. 우리가 알지 못하는 해결책을 갖고 계시는 분입니다. 전능하신 하나님은 위기를 기회로 만드실 수 있는 분입니다.

기도란 문제가 아닌 하나님을 바라보는 것입니다. 우리가 하나님을 바라보게 될 때 하나님이 보여 주시는 문제의 해결책을 깨닫게 됩니다. 우리가 기도를 드림으로 하나님이 개입하시게 되면 놀라운 일이 전개 됩니다. 역전의 드라마가 전개 됩니다. 기도할 때 하나님은 위기를 기회로 바꾸어 주십니다. 기도할 때 하나님은 어려운 문제를 통해 더욱 뻗어나가도록 도와주십니다.

셋째, 위기를 만났을 때 적합한 사람들의 도움을 받도록 하십시오. 우리가 기도할 때 하나님은 우리가 만나야 할 사람과 만나지 말아야 할 사람을 알려 주십니다. 위기의 순간은 급박한 순간입니다. 그런 까닭에 급박한 순간에, 긴급한 문제를 해결해 줄 수 있는 소수의 사람을 만나야 합니다. 위기를 기회로 만들어낼 수 있는 적합한 사람들에게 도움을 요청해야 합니다. 힘들 때는 도움을 받아야 합니다. 하나님은 사람을 통해 우리를 도우신다는 사실을 기억하십시오.

다니엘은 위기를 기회로 만드는 일에 탁월했던 인물입니다. 그가 직면했던 위기 중의 하나는 느부갓네살 왕이 꾼 꿈을 알아내고 그 꿈을 해석하는 일이었습니다. 그렇지 못하면 바벨론의 모든 지혜자가 죽임을 당하게 되어 있었습니다. 다니엘과 그의 친구들도 그 사람들 속에 포함되어 있었습니다(단 2:1-13). 다니엘은 위기에 처했을 때 현실을 인정했습니다. 상황이 급박하게 돌아가는 것을 감지했습니다. 그는 급히 왕의 친위대장 아리옥을 찾아가서 왕을 만나게 해 달라고 부탁했습니다. 그는 왕을 만나 바벨론의 지혜자들을 죽이는 것을 잠시 연기해 달라고 부탁했습니다. 그는 현실을 규명하고, 우선 급한 불을 끌 줄 알았습니다. 그는 왕에게, 기한을 주면 반드시 왕의 꿈과 그 꿈을 해석해 주겠다고 약속했습니다. 그 다음에 친구들을 찾아가서 중보 기도를 부탁했습니다(단 2:17-18). 그리고 하나님께 나아가 기도했습니다. 하나님은 다니엘에게 왕의 꿈과 해석을 알려 주셨습니다(단 2:19-23). 결국 위기는 기회가 되었습니다. 지금 우리 민족이 처한 위기가 하나님의 도우심으로 기회가 되도록 중보해 주십시오.

Wisdom of Turning Crisis into Opportunity

Crisis is a compound word of these two words: risk and opportunity. Crisis can either be a risk or an opportunity, depending on which perspective you view with. The most important thing is perspective. Everything depends on what kind of perspective you have in crisis. People who see crisis as a risk are more likely to be at risk. If you consider crisis as a risk, you will be afraid. If you fear, you will lose discernment. If you see crisis as a risk, you cannot see the opportunity within the crisis. People who see crisis as an opportunity can seize the opportunity in a time of crisis and produce amazing results.

There are two sides to everything. A wise person is one who solves problems by looking at both sides. This is a story I read a long time ago. A salesman, who sold shoes, went to Africa and immediately saw that no one wore shoes. He then sent a telegram saying, “Selling shoes is impossible. Nobody wears shoes.”Another salesman arrived in the same area and immediately saw that the native people did not wear shoes. Then he sent a telegram saying, “Double the order of shoes. Millions of people need shoes.” Though they saw the same situation, one person interpreted it negatively and the other interpreted it positively.

We sometimes face crises that we never could have predicted. The most important thing is to respond calmly in any situation. When an event suddenly unfolds, we should not be caught in fear or anxiety. Above all, it is important to remain calm. Of course it is not easy. But fear or worry does not help you. I would like to share with you some of the wisdom I have learned and experienced that made crisis into an opportunity.

First, face reality when you encounter crisis. Admit the problem. Do what you need to do, quickly. If there is a fire, make sure to put it out quickly. If you are sick, see the doctor right away. Use a mask if necessary. Wash your hands often with soap. At the same time, think positively about the crisis as an opportunity. A leader is not one who ignores reality but one who identifies it. And a leader gives hope even in difficult realities. A leader is someone who can see a new vision in a problem. A leader is someone who can turn a crisis into an opportunity.

Second, pray to God when you encounter crisis. The time of crisis is the time to pray. Some crises are difficult to solve with human strength and wisdom. We then need God’s supernatural and transcendent divine wisdom and power. Some crises can only be solved by God's intervention. God sees what we cannot see. He has the solution that we do not know. The Almighty God can make crises into opportunities.

Prayer is looking upon God, and not the problem. When we look upon God, we understand God's solution to the problem. When God intervenes as we pray, something amazing happens. The drama of reversal unfolds. When you pray, God turns crisis into an opportunity. When you pray, God helps us move forward through difficult problems.

Third, seek help from the right people when you encounter crisis. When we pray, God tells us whom we should meet and whom we should not meet. The moment of crisis is an urgent moment. Therefore, in an urgent moment, we need to meet a few people who can solve urgent problems. We need to ask for help from the right people who can make crisis into an opportunity. We need help when we are having a hard time. Remember that God helps us through people.

Daniel was excellent at making crises into opportunities. One of the crises he faced was to find out and interpret the dreams of King Nebuchadnezzar. Otherwise, all the wise men of Babylon would be killed. Daniel and his friends were among them (Daniel 2:1-13). Daniel admitted the reality in times of crisis. He sensed the urgent situation. He urgently went to visit the king's captain, Arioch, and asked him to meet the king. He met the king and asked him to postpone the killing of the Babylonian wise men. He knew the reality and, first of all, was able to deal with the most urgent problem. He promised that if the king gave him a deadline, he would find out and interpret the king’s dream. Then he went to his friends and asked for intercessory prayer (Daniel 2:17-18). Then he went to God and prayed. God told Daniel the king's dream and its interpretation (Daniel 2:19-23). In the end, the crisis became an opportunity. Please intercede for the current crisis of our people to become an opportunity with God's help.
