[목회서신] 기록을 남길 줄 아는 사람의 지혜 (2020.5.17)

우리가 하는 말에는 놀라운 힘이 있습니다. 우리가 하는 말이 사람들을 치유할 수 있습니다. 쓰러진 사람을 일으켜 세울 수 있습니다. 우리가 하는 말이 절망 중에 있는 사람에게 소망을 심어줄 수 있습니다. 칭찬 한 마디가 한 사람의 전 생애를 바꾸어 놓을 수도 있습니다. 하지만 우리가 하는 말은 많은 경우에 쉽게 잊혀지게 됩니다. 그래서 기록이 중요합니다. 기록이 왜 중요할까요? 기록한다는 것이 왜 지혜로운 것일까요?

첫째, 기억하기 위해 기록해야 합니다. 기록하지 않으면 오래 기억할 수 없습니다. 한비야씨는 “나는 또렷한 기억보다 희미한 연필자국이 낫다고 확신한다.”라고 말합니다. 잘 기억하기 위한 기록의 중요성을 강조한 말입니다. 성경은 반복해서 하나님이 베푸신 은혜를 “기억하라”고 말씀합니다. 아브라함 허셀은 “성경이 명하고 있는 것들 가운데 많은 것은 ‘기억하라’는 한마디 말로 함축될 수 있다.”라고 말합니다. 예수님이 제자들에게 명하신 성찬도 기억을 위한 것입니다. “너희가 이를 행하여 나를 기념하라”(눅 22:19). “기념하라”는 것은 곧 “기억하라”는 것을 의미합니다.

기억한다는 것은 다시 경험하는 것입니다. 결혼기념일은 결혼 초기의 사랑을 기억하고 새롭게 경험하는 날입니다. 다시 경험할 때 다시 헌신하게 됩니다. 기억이 중요한 이유는 좋은 사랑의 기억이 현실의 어려움을 지탱할 수 있는 힘을 제공해 주기 때문입니다. 우리는 때로 예측하지 못한 역경을 경험하게 됩니다. 그때 필요한 것은 과거의 고난 중에 경험한 하나님의 사랑에 대한 기억입니다. 우리는 그 기억을 통해 지금 찾아온 시련을 견디고 이겨낼 수 있습니다. 하나님께 받은 은혜와 사랑의 기억은 고난 중에도 지탱할 수 있는 힘을 제공해 줍니다. 또한 과거의 아름다운 기억은 장래에 대한 소망을 품도록 도와줍니다. 소망을 품고 미래를 향해 전진하도록 도와줍니다.

둘째, 깊이 배우기 위해 기록해야 합니다. 저는 하나님의 말씀을 묵상할 때 기록하면서 묵상합니다. 그때 더욱 깊이 깨닫게 됩니다. 또한 훌륭한 분들을 만나서 좋은 가르침을 받을 때 기록하면서 배웁니다. 제가 기록하면서 그분들의 말씀에 경청하면 더 좋은 지혜를 나누어 주시는 것을 경험했습니다. 또한 우리는 배운 것을 기록하는 중에 더욱 깊은 배움에 이르게 됩니다. 기록하는 중에 이전에 배운 것들과 관련을 맺게 되면 더욱 깊은 깨달음의 경지에 이르게 됩니다.

셋째, 전수하기 위해 기록해야 합니다. 배운 것을 기록하게 되면 배운 것을 다른 사람에게 전수할 수 있게 됩니다. 기록은 전수를 낳습니다. 저는 좋은 지혜는 반드시 나누어야 된다고 생각합니다. 제가 설교하고, 글을 쓰고, 책을 출판하는 이유는 제가 전수 받은 좋은 지혜를 나누기 위해서입니다. 그런 의미에서 저는 기록을 통해 좋은 지혜를 유통하는 사람입니다. 우리가 전수해야 할 것 중의 하나는 역사적 사건입니다. 역사적 사건을 기록하는 이유는 과거의 실수를 반복하지 않기 위함입니다. 또한 잘한 것은 후대에 전수하여 계속해서 좋은 결과를 산출하기 위해서입니다. 역사적 사건을 기록한다는 것은 그 당시의 문화를 함께 담는 것을 의미합니다. 문화는 그 시대의 산소와 같은 것입니다.

넷째, 아름다운 공동체를 형성하기 위해 기록해야 합니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들에게 유월절, 오순절, 그리고 초막절을 기억하여 지키라고 명하셨습니다. 그리함으로 그들은 하나님의 백성의 공동체를 형성할 수 있었습니다. 예수님이 제자들에게 성찬을 행함으로 예수님을 기념하라고 말씀하신 이유도 공동체를 형성하기 위함입니다. 예수님을 중심으로 한 공동체, 예수님의 살을 함께 먹고 그 피를 함께 마신 공동체를 형성하는 것입니다.

마지막으로, 거룩한 기대를 가지고 기록해야 합니다. 우리는 과거에 기록된 하나님의 말씀을 통해 엄청난 혜택을 누리고 있습니다. 만약에 성경이 기록되지 않았다면 우리가 어떻게 하나님의 구원의 비밀을 알 수 있겠습니까? 기록은 하나님의 아이디어입니다. 지금 우리가 읽고 있는 고전은 과거에 기록된 오래된 책입니다. 우리는 고전을 통해 인생이란 무엇이며, 인간이란 누구인가를 배웁니다. 또한 기독교 고전을 통해 하나님이 어떤 분이신가를 배웁니다. 우리가 과거에 기록된 책들의 혜택을 지금 누리고 있는 것처럼 우리가 기록한 것들을 우리 후손들이 장차 누리게 될 것입니다.

기록은 때로 우리 인생을 역전시키는 은총의 도구가 됩니다. 모르드개는 아하수에로 왕을 암살하려는 음모를 꾸미는 것을 알고, 그것을 알려 왕을 위기로부터 구해줍니다. 그 사건이 왕 앞에서 궁중 일기에 기록됩니다(에 2:23). 이스라엘 민족이 하만의 음모에 의해 진멸될 위기에 처했을 때 밤에 왕이 바로 그 궁중 일기를 읽게 됩니다. 그리고 모르드개에게 상을 베풀게 됩니다. 그리함으로 역전의 드라마가 전개됩니다. 기록이 보여준 놀라운 사건입니다. 기록을 통해 기억하며, 기억을 통해 풍성한 삶을 누리시길 빕니다.

The Wisdom of Those Who Can Keep Records

There is an amazing power in what we say. What we say can heal people. What we say can help raise a fallen person up. What we say can instill hope in someone in despair. A single compliment can change a person's entire life. But what we say is easily forgotten in many cases. That's why keeping record is important. Why is recording important? Why is it wise to record?

First, we must record in order to remember. If we don't record it, we won’t remember it for long. “I am sure that faint pencil marks are better than clear memories,” says Han Bi-ya. She puts emphasis on the importance of recording, in order to remember well. The Bible repeatedly says, "Remember," the grace which God has given you. Abraham Heschel said, “Much of what the Bible demands can be comprised in one imperative: Remember!” The sacrament of communion, which Jesus commanded his disciples to do is also in order to remember. “... Do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19). “In remembrance” means to “remember.”

Remembering is to re-experience. One’s wedding anniversary is a day when we remember and experience the love of the early stages in marriage. When you re-experience it, you will commit to the marriage again. Memory is important because a good memory of love provides the power to sustain in the midst of the difficulties of reality. Sometimes we experience unpredictable adversity. What you need, then, is a memory of God's love that you experienced in your past troubles. With that memory, we can endure and overcome the present trials that have come. The memory of God’s grace and love gives us the strength to sustain even in times of suffering. Also, the beautiful memories of the past help us to have hope for the future. It helps us move forward with hope, into the future.

Second, we must keep record in order to learn deeply. When I meditate on the Word of God, I usually write down what I meditate on. Then, I can understand more deeply. We also learn by taking note of what is said when we meet people who are great and have good teaching. I have experienced that when I take note of what is being said and listen to their words, the person shares more wisdom. Also, as we record what we learn, we come to deeper level of learning. As you relate to what you have learned previously while writing, you reach a deeper level of enlightenment.

Third, we must keep record in order to pass it on. By recording what we learn, we can pass on what we learned to others. Keeping record leads to passing it on. I think good wisdom must be shared. The reason I preach, write, and publish books is to share the good wisdom I have received. In that sense, I am a person who distributes good wisdom through the act of recording. One of the things we need to pass on is historical events. The reason for keeping record of historical events is to avoid repeating past mistakes. Also, it is to pass on what is good to future generations and to continue to produce good results. Recording historical events means capturing the culture of that time. Culture is like the oxygen in that era.

Fourth, we must keep record in order to form a beautiful community. God commanded the Israelites to remember and observe the Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacle. In doing so, they were able to form a community of God's people. The reason Jesus told his disciples to remember Jesus by celebrating the communion is to form a community. It is to build a community centered on Jesus, a community that eats the flesh of Jesus and drinks his blood together.

Lastly, we must keep record with holy expectations. We enjoy tremendous benefits through the Word of God written in the past. If the Bible was not written, how would we know the mystery of God's salvation? Keeping record is God's idea. The classics we are reading now is an old book written in the past. Through classics, we learn what life is and who humans are. It also shows who God is like through a Christian classic. As we are now enjoying the benefits of books written in the past, our descendants will enjoy what we have written.

The records we have are often a tool of grace to reverse our lives. In Esther 2, Mordecai finds out that there is a plot to assassinate King Ahasuerus and informs it to save the king from the crisis. The incident is recorded in the chronicles in the presence of the king (Esther 2:23). When the Israelites are in danger of being wiped out by Haman's conspiracy, the king reads the very same chronicles at night. And he allows Mordecai to be rewarded. In result, the drama of a reversal is unfolded. This is an amazing event that shows what recording is. I hope you will remember through keeping records and enjoy an abundant life through memory.
