[목회서신] 고난을 낭비하지 않는 지혜 (2020.05.31)

고난을 낭비하지 않는 사람은 지혜로운 사람입니다. 고난을 낭비하지 않는 사람은 고난의 소중함을 아는 사람입니다. 우리가 무엇인가를 “낭비하지 말라”고 권면한다면, 그것은 아주 소중한 것임에 틀림없습니다. “쓰레기를 낭비하지 말라”고 말하는 사람은 없습니다. 그 이유는 쓰레기는 쓸모가 없기 때문입니다. 우리는 자녀들에게 “돈을 낭비하지 말라”고 가르칩니다. 절약과 저축의 중요성을 가르칩니다. 그 이유는 돈의 가치를 알기 때문입니다.

돈이 하나님이 될 수는 없습니다. 돈을 하나님으로 삼는다면 돈을 우상으로 섬기고 있는 것입니다. 돈을 하나님처럼 사랑하거나 섬겨서는 안 됩니다. 예수님은 “하나님과 재물을 겸하여 섬기지 못하느니라”(마 6:24)고 말씀하십니다. 돈이 하나님이 될 수는 없지만 돈은 소중한 것입니다. 성경은 돈의 소중함을 가르쳐 줍니다. 경제의 소중함을 가르쳐줍니다. 돈이 인생의 전부는 아닙니다. 하지만 돈이 없을 때 우리는 고통을 받게 됩니다.

돈이 없으면 빚을 얻게 됩니다. 빚을 얻게 되면 빚진 자가 됩니다. 성경에서 빚 때문에 종으로 팔려가는 것을 봅니다. 돈이 소중한 것은 돈으로 쌀을 사기 때문입니다. 쌀은 생명의 양식입니다. 쌀을 통해 우리 생명이 보존되고 힘을 얻습니다. 돈으로 아끼는 사람들을 위해 소중한 기회를 만들어 주기도 합니다. 생활이 어려운 학생들에게 학비를 도와줌으로 배울 수 있는 기회를 만들어 주기도 합니다. 바로 그것이 기부입니다. 제가 좋아하는 “기부”라는 말의 정의는 “기회를 부여하는 것”입니다. 지금처럼 어려울 때면 돈의 소중함을 더욱 느낍니다. 돈의 소중함을 안 사람은 돈을 낭비하지 않고 평소에 저축을 하게 됩니다. 돈을 저축해서 의미 있는 일에 사용합니다. 영혼을 구원하는 일에 사용합니다.

우리는 자녀들에게 “시간을 낭비하지 말라”고 가르칩니다. “세월을 낭비하지 말라”고 가르칩니다. 그 이유는 시간의 소중함을 알기 때문입니다. 시간은 모든 사람에게, 공평하게 주어진 선물입니다. 하지만 그 시간을 어떻게 사용하느냐에 따라 모든 것이 달라집니다. 저는 시간을 소중히 여기는 사람입니다. 시간을 낭비하지 않고 시간을 최대한 선용함으로 가치 있는 삶을 살기 위해 노력합니다. 우리는 자녀들에게 “인생을 낭비하지 말라”고 가르칩니다. 그 이유는 인생은 한 번 밖에 없는 소중한 것이기 때문입니다. 우리 인생은 낭비하기에는 너무 고귀한 것입니다.

하나님은 우리에게 고난을 낭비하지 않도록 가르치십니다. 하나님이 쓰신 인물들은 한결같이 고난을 낭비하지 않았습니다. 고난 속에는 실패도 담겨 있습니다. 그들은 실패를 낭비하지 않았습니다. 실패는 아주 소중한 경험입니다. 실패를 통해 우리는 분별력을 얻게 됩니다. 실패를 통해 해야 할 일과 해서는 안 될 일을 배우게 됩니다. 실패를 낭비한다는 것은 실패로부터 배우지 못한 것을 의미합니다. 실패로부터 배우지 못하면 실패를 반복하게 됩니다. 실패를 통해 배운 사람은 실패하기 전보다 훨씬 지혜롭고 신중한 사람이 됩니다. 실패 속에는 성공의 씨앗이 담겨 있습니다. 실패를 소중히 여기는 사람은 실패 속에 담긴 성공의 씨앗을 찾아내어 키울 줄 압니다.

고난을 낭비하지 않는다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는 것일까요? 고난 속에 하나님의 섭리가 있다고 믿는 것입니다. 하나님이 우리 모든 고난을 합력해서 선을 이루어 주실 것을 믿는 것입니다(롬 8:28). 고난을 낭비하지 않는 길은 고난을 하나님께 가까이 나아가는 기회로 삼는 것입니다. 하나님을 가까이하는 것이 가장 큰 복입니다(시 73:28). 죄는 우리를 하나님으로부터 멀어지게 만듭니다. 반면에 고난은 우리를 하나님께 가까이 나아가도록 만들어 줍니다. 고난은 그릇된 행실을 떠나 하나님의 말씀을 지키도록 도와줍니다(시 119:67).

고난을 낭비하지 않는 길은 고난을 스승으로 여기는 것입니다. 고난을 배움의 기회로 여기는 것입니다. 고난은 가르침을 줍니다. 특별히 고난은 인생에서 무엇이 소중한가를 가르쳐줍니다. 우리는 고난을 통해 하나님의 음성을 듣게 됩니다. 하나님의 인도를 받게 됩니다. 우리는 고난을 통해 더욱 깊어지고 성숙해지고 원숙해 집니다. 고난 중에 있는 사람들의 마음을 이해하고 위로하게 됩니다. 무엇보다 고난을 통해 순종의 사람이 됩니다(히 5:8).

하나님은 십자가의 고난을 낭비하지 않으셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 고난을 당하셨습니다. 예수님은 그 고난을 통해 우리를 구원하셨습니다. 예수님의 고난이 없었다면 구원도 없습니다. 영생도 없습니다. 용서도 없습니다. 예수님이 고난 중에 흘린 보혈을 통해 우리 모든 죄는 사함을 받았습니다. 예수님의 고난이 없으면 부활 생명도 없습니다. 예수님의 고난은 참으로 고귀한 것입니다. 우리는 고난을 좋아하지 않지만 하나님은 고난을 통해 놀라운 복을 주신다는 사실을 기억하십시오. 부디 고난을 낭비하지 않는 삶을 사시길 부탁드립니다. 고난 속에 감추어 두신 변장된 축복을 받아 누리시길 빕니다.

Wisdom of Not Wasting Suffering

A person who does not waste suffering is wise. A person who does not waste suffering knows the value of suffering. If we urge someone, saying “Do not waste it,” it must be something very valuable. No one says, "Do not waste garbage." The reason is because garbage is useless. We teach our children and say, "Don't waste money." We teach them the importance of saving. The reason is because we know the value of money.

Money cannot be your God. If you consider money as God, you are serving money as an idol. We must not love or serve money like God. Jesus says, "You cannot serve both God and money" (Matthew 6:24). Money cannot be your God, but money is valuable. The Bible teaches us the value of money. It teaches us the importance of economy. Money is not everything in life. But when we have no money, we suffer.

If you don’t have money, you will have debt. If you have debt, you become a debtor. We see in the Bible, people being sold as slaves because of debt. Money is valuable because it can buy rice. Rice is the food of life. Through rice, our lives are preserved and strengthened. Money also creates valuable opportunities for those whom you care about. It may also provide learning opportunities for students who have financial difficulties by helping them with their tuition fees. That is donation. My favorite definition of the word "donation" is "giving opportunities." When times are difficult, like now, we recognize the value of money even more. Those who know the value of money don't waste money and usually save. They save money and use it for meaningful things. They use it to save souls.

We teach our children, "Don't waste time." We teach them “Do not to waste the opportunities throughout time.” The reason is because we know the value of time. Time is a fair gift to all. But everything depends on how you spend that time. I am a person who values time. I strive to live a valuable life by making the best use of time without wasting it. We teach our children, "Don't waste your life." The reason is because life is a precious thing that only exists once. Our life is too precious to waste.

God teaches us not to waste suffering. Those whom God uses have never wasted suffering. Failure is also contained in suffering. They do not waste failure. Failure is a very precious experience. Through failure, we acquire discernment. Through failure we learn what to do and what not to do. When we don’t learn from our failures, we waste our failures. Those who fail to learn from their failures will repeat their failures. Those who learn through their failures become wiser and more prudent than before. Failure contains the seeds of success. Those who value failure know how to find and grow the seeds of success in their failure.

What does it mean not to waste suffering? It is believing that God's providence is in our suffering. It is believing that God is in all our suffering and will work everything together for our good (Romans 8:28). The way not to waste suffering is to make it an opportunity to draw closer to God. Being drawn near to God is the greatest blessing (Psalm 73:28). Sin moves us away from God. On the other hand, suffering brings us closer to God. Suffering helps us to leave the way of wrong conduct and keep to the Word of God (Psalm 119:67).

The way not to waste suffering is to consider suffering as your teacher. It is to consider suffering as an opportunity to learn. Suffering teaches us. In particular, suffering teaches us what is valuable in life. We hear God's voice through suffering. We receive guidance of God. Through suffering, we become deeper, more mature, and fully mature. We understand and comfort the hearts of those who are in suffering. Above all, through suffering, we become people of obedience (Hebrews 5:8).

God did not waste the suffering of the cross. Jesus suffered on the cross. Jesus saved us through suffering. Without Jesus' suffering, there is no salvation. There is no eternal life. There is no forgiveness. Through the blood that Jesus shed in suffering, all our sins are forgiven. There is no resurrection life without Jesus' suffering. Jesus' suffering is truly noble. Though we do not like suffering, please remember that God blesses us through suffering. Please live a life that does not waste suffering. May you receive and enjoy the disguised blessings hidden in your sufferings.
