[목회서신] 생명을 존중하는 마음 | The Heart of Honoring Life (2020.06.07)

우리는 역사의 한복판에서 소중한 진리를 배울 수 있어야 합니다. 우리는 코로나바이러스와 조지 플로이드의 사망을 통해 아주 힘든 상황에 직면해 있습니다. 고통스런 역사의 현실 속에서 우리가 배울 수 있는 교훈은 무엇일까요?

첫째, 작은 것 속에 담긴 잠재력을 배워야 합니다. 코로나바이러스는 아주 작습니다. 보이지 않습니다. 하지만 그 안에 병을 일으키는 나쁜 잠재력이 담겨 있습니다. 또한 코로나바이러스는 전염성과 전파력이 강합니다. 눈에 보이지 않은 코로나바이러스가 전 세계로 퍼져 나가고 있습니다. 코로나바이러스는 기생력이 강합니다. 코로나바이러스는 숙주(宿主)에 기생해서 병을 일으키는 것입니다. 숙주란 기생 생물에게 영양을 공급하는 생물을 의미합니다. 코로나바이러스는 사람 속에 기생해서 병을 일으킵니다.

우리가 코비드19를 통해 배우는 가장 소중한 교훈은 작은 것의 힘입니다. 보이지 않는 것의 힘입니다. 우리는 작은 것을 소홀히 해서는 안 됩니다. 코비드19는 작으면서 나쁜 잠재력을 가졌습니다. 그래서 위험합니다. 반면에 좋은 잠재력을 가진 작은 것들이 있습니다. 생명의 씨앗 속에는 좋은 잠재력이 담겨 있습니다. 특별히 말씀은 생명의 씨앗입니다. 말씀의 작은 씨앗이 품고 있는 영향력을 생각해 보십시오. 말씀의 작은 씨앗이 우리 안에서 역사할 때 그 말씀은 우리 영혼에 영원한 영향을 끼치게 됩니다. 하나님의 말씀은 생명의 능력입니다. 치유의 능력입니다. 용서의 능력입니다. 회복의 능력입니다. 화해케 하는 능력입니다. 말씀의 씨앗은 결과를 낳습니다. 그래서 우리는 날마다 말씀을 읽고 암송하고 묵상해야 합니다. 또한 그 말씀을 우리 삶 속에 적용해야 합니다. 그때 우리는 말씀의 능력이 극대화되는 것을 경험하게 됩니다.

둘째, 생명의 소중함을 배워야 합니다. 우리가 코비드19를 통해 배우는 또 하나의 교훈은 생명의 소중함입니다. 코비드19가 역사에 등장하면서 사람들은 모든 것을 내려놓고 생명에 집중하게 되었습니다. 그 이유는 생명보다 소중한 것은 없다는 확신 때문입니다. 생명을 보존하기 위해 모든 것을 멈추고 있는 시점에서 조지 플로이드가 사망했습니다.

그의 죽음을 통해 우리는 한 생명이 얼마나 소중한 가를 깨닫게 됩니다. 그의 죽음은 슬픈 죽음입니다. 우리 마음을 아프게 한 죽음입니다. 하나님이 가장 소중하게 여기는 것이 생명입니다. 예수님은 한 영혼이 천하보다 귀하다고 말씀하십니다. 예수님은 온 천하를 얻고도 생명을 잃으면 무슨 소용이 있겠느냐고 말씀하십니다. 예수님은 이 세상에서 자신의 생명과 바꿀 수 있을 만큼 중요한 것은 없다고 말씀하십니다(마 16:26).

조지 플로이드의 죽음은 그가 식당에서 지불한 20달러를, 위조지폐로 의심한 식당 직원이 경찰에 신고함으로 시작되었습니다. 천하보다 귀한 한 생명이 20달러 때문에 결국 죽음을 맞이한 것입니다. 조지 플로이드는 텍사스 주 휴스턴 출신입니다. 키가 커서 학창 시절에는 운동선수로 활동했습니다. 그를 잘 아는 사람들은 그가 독실한 개신교 신자로 봉사 활동에 적극적인 사람이었다고 합니다. 그는 한때 실수한 과거를 청산하고 젊은 흑인들을 바른길로 인도하기 위해 노력한 모범 시민이었다고 합니다. 그는 무한한 잠재력을 가진 사람이었습니다. 하지만 46세의 젊은 나이에 두 딸을 세상에 남긴 채 생애를 마감했습니다.

셋째, 호흡의 소중함을 배워야 합니다. 조지 플로이드가 체포되는 과정에서 그가 부탁한 것은 숨을 쉬게 해 달라는 것이었습니다. 결국 그는 숨을 쉬지 못해 죽음에 이르렀습니다. 우리 생명은 호흡과 관련되어 있습니다. 하나님이 아담을 만드신 후에 그에게 생기, 즉 호흡을 불어 넣어 주심으로 그가 생령이 되었습니다(창 2:7). 예수님이 부활하신 후에 제자들을 찾아오셔서, 그들에게 숨을 내쉬며 “성령을 받으라”고 말씀하셨습니다(요 20:22). 예수님은 낙심한 제자들에게 숨을 불어 넣어 주셨습니다. 그 숨은 성령님이셨습니다. 호흡은 생명 이상의 뜻을 내포하고 있습니다. 그것은 생명존중, 인권존중, 그리고 정의실현과 관련되어 있습니다. 저는 1992년 4.29폭동을 생생하게 기억합니다. 폭동은 참으로 위험한 것입니다. 흑인의 인권을 존중해 달라는 시위가 과격한 폭동으로 이어지지 않도록 기도해 주십시오.

우리는 이번 사건이 한 경찰관의 과잉진압으로 일어난 것을 알고 있습니다. 하지만 그 경찰관의 잘못 때문에 모든 경찰관들의 헌신적인 노고를 폄하해서는 안 됩니다. 우리 성도들 가운데도 경찰관으로 봉직(奉職)하고 있는 분들이 있습니다. 모든 경찰관들이 사람들의 생명과 인권을 차별없이 존중하면서 시민들을 잘 돌볼 수 있도록 기도해 주십시오. 시민들을 돌보는 경찰관들의 안전을 위해 기도해 주십시오. 또한 하나님이 슬픔을 당한 조지 플로이드 가족들을 위로해 주시도록 기도해 주십시오. 하나님이 미국에 평화를 주시도록 기도해 주십시오.

The Heart of Honoring Life

We must be able to learn precious truths in the middle of history in the making. We are faced with a very difficult situation in the midst of coronavirus and the death of George Floyd. What lessons can we learn from the reality of this painful history in the making?

First, we need to learn the potential that is contained in small things. Coronavirus is very small. It is not visible. But there is bad potential to cause disease in the small coronavirus. In addition, coronavirus is highly contagious and has a high transmission rate. The invisible coronavirus is spreading all over the world. Coronavirus is highly parasitic. Coronavirus is parasitic in the host and causes disease. A host is a creature that provides parasitic organisms nutrition. Coronavirus is parasitic in humans and causes disease.

The most valuable lesson we can learn from COVID-19 is the power of small things. It is the power of the invisible. We should not neglect small things. COVID-19 is small and yet it has the potential to be bad. So it is dangerous. On the other hand, there are small things with good potential. The seeds of life have good potential. In particular, the Word is the seed of life. Think about the influence that a small seed of the Word can have. When the small seed of the Word works within us, it has an eternal effect on our souls. God's Word is the power of life. It has healing power. It has the power of forgiveness. It has the power of restoration. It has the power of reconciliation. The seeds of the Word produce results. That is why we have to read, memorize and meditate on the Word every day. Also, we need to apply the Word to our lives. Then, we can experience the maximization of the power of the Word.

Second, we must learn the preciousness of life. Another lesson we can learn from COVID-19 is the preciousness of life. As COVID-19 appeared in history, people put everything down and focused on life. The reason is because there is nothing more precious than life. George Floyd died while everything was stopped to preserve life.

Through his death, we realize how precious one life is. His death was a sad death. It is the death that breaks our hearts. Life is what God values ​​most. Jesus says one soul is more precious than the world. Jesus tells us what good it would be to gain the whole world if we lose our life. Jesus says there is nothing more important in this world to exchange our life with (Matthew 16:26).

George Floyd's death began when a restaurant employee suspected him for counterfeiting a $20 bill which he paid with and reported to police. One life more precious than the whole world died over a $20 bill. George Floyd is from Houston, Texas. Because he was tall, he was an athlete during his school years. Those who knew him well said that he was a devoted Christian who was active in community service. He is said to have been a model citizen who liquidated his past and worked hard to lead young black people on the right path. He was a man of infinite potential. However, at the young age of 46, he passed away leaving his two daughters behind.

Third, we need to learn the preciousness of breathing. During the arrest of George Floyd, what he asked for was to breathe. Eventually, he could not breathe, leading to his death. Our life is related to breathing. After God created Adam, God breathed the breath of life into Adam, then Adam became a living being. (Genesis 2:7). After Jesus' resurrection, he came to the disciples and breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:22). Jesus breathed on the discouraged disciples. It was the hidden Holy Spirit. Breathing implies the meaning beyond life. It is related to respect for life, respect for human rights, and the realization for justice. I vividly remember the 1992 Los Angeles riots on April 29th. Riots are truly dangerous. Please pray that the protests to respect the human rights of black people will not lead to violent riots.

We know that the incident was caused by a police officer using excessive power. However, because of the wrongdoing of the policeman, we should not demean the dedication of all policemen. Some of our church members are serving as police officers. Please pray for all the police officers to respect people's lives and human rights without discrimination and to take good care of their citizens. Please pray for the safety of the police officers who care for our citizens. Also, pray for God to comfort the grieving family of George Floyd. Please pray for God to bring peace to America.
