[목회서신] 다시 초심으로! | Let’s Go Back to Our First Heart! (2020.11.8)

초심은 처음 마음입니다. 그래서 초심은 순수합니다. 다시 초심이야기를 하는 이유는 우리 교회가 창립 11주년을 맞이하기 때문입니다. 교회 창립을 기념하고, 생일을 기념하고, 결혼기념일을 지키는 이유는 기억하기 위해서입니다. 기념한다는 것은 곧 기억하는 것입니다. 기억한다는 것은 우리 마음의 보물 창고에 담긴 소중한 경험을 다시 끄집어내어 되새김질하는 것입니다. 기억해야 기념할 수 있습니다. 기념한다는 것은 처음 마음과 처음 사랑을 다시 경험한다는 것입니다. 하나님은 성경에서 자주 기억하라고 말씀합니다. 특별히 하나님의 구원과 베풀어 주신 은혜를 기억하라고 말씀합니다. 또한 후손들에게 하나님의 구원의 역사를 가르치기 위해 기록하라고 말씀합니다. 기록이 중요한 것은 기록을 통해 기억할 수 있기 때문입니다. 중요한 것은 어떻게 기억하며, 기억을 어떻게 해석하느냐에 있습니다. 또한 기억에 어떻게 반응하느냐에 있습니다. 미로슬라브 볼프가 《기억의 종말》에서 가르쳐 준 기억에 대한 통찰을 나누고 싶습니다. “우리가 우리의 기억을 형성하기 때문에, 우리의 정체성은 우리가 기억하는 내용으로만 이루어지지 않는다. 어떻게 기억하느냐도 여기에 영향을 미친다. 우리는 자신의 기억에 반응하고 기억을 형성할 수 있기 때문에 우리의 기억보다 큰 존재다. 기억에 대한 반응을 결정하는 것이 기억 하나뿐이라면, 우리는 과거의 노예에 불과할 것이다.” (미로슬라브 볼프, 『기억의 종말』, IVP, 45쪽) 과거의 사건을 기억한다는 것은 과거를 해석한다는 것을 의미합니다. 해석이 중요한 것은 과거의 해석이 우리의 현재와 미래에 영향을 끼치기 때문입니다. 과거의 결혼식 날을 기념하는 부부가 그 날을 어떻게 기억하고, 해석하느냐에 따라 오늘의 결혼 생활과 미래에 영향을 끼치게 됩니다. 무엇보다 우리의 과거를 하나님의 섭리의 관점에서 해석하는 것이 중요합니다. 그때 과거의 기억은 복된 기억으로 재탄생하게 됩니다. 초심은 겸손한 마음입니다. 처음 시작하는 사람은 겸손합니다. 작은 것을 소중히 여깁니다. 작은 것 하나에도 감동합니다. 작은 도움만 받아도 눈물 흘립니다. 그 초심이 시간이 지나가면 변화되고, 잘못하면 변질됩니다. 순수한 동기가 야심으로 변질됩니다. 소중히 여겼던 작은 도움들에 대한 감동이 식어집니다. 감동의 눈물은 쉽게 마릅니다. 감동의 눈물이 사라지면 마음은 딱딱해집니다. 사막처럼 황폐하게 됩니다. 어떤 땅이든 비가 오지 않으면 사막이 되듯이, 우리 마음에 눈물이 사라지면 사막이 됩니다. 초심을 가꾼다는 것은 겸손한 성품을 배양한다는 것입니다. 초심은 배우는 마음입니다. 열린 마음입니다. 새로운 변화에 도전하고 새로운 변화를 환영합니다. 새로운 시작에는 정해진 것이 없기에 유연합니다. 목적지향적입니다. 그런데 세월이 흘러가면 규정이 많아지고 세분화됩니다. 규정이 질서를 잡는 데는 도움이 되지만 잘못하면 유연성을 떨어뜨립니다. 그래서 규정은 정기적으로 점검해서 더 나은 규정으로 갱신해야합니다. 무엇이든 굳어지면 좋지 않습니다. 우리는 거듭 처음 마음으로 돌아가 늘 새롭게 시작해야 합니다. 그래야 지속적으로 발전할 수 있습니다. 초심은 근원을 소중히 여기는 마음입니다. 우리가 소중히 여기는 근원은 하나님이십니다. 하나님은 생명의 원천이 되시며(시 36:9), 생수의 근원이 되십니다(렘 17:13). 우리가 붙잡아야 할 근원은 성경입니다. 진리입니다. 또한 사람의 본분은 하나님을 경외함에 있습니다(전 12;13). 근원을 소중히 여기는 사람은 우선순위를 따라 삽니다. 그리스도인의 우선순위는 하나님의 나라와 의입니다(마 6:33). 하나님께 드리는 예배가 우선순위입니다. 예수님의 비전이 우선순위입니다. 예수님이 우리에게 주신 비전은 세계 복음화입니다. 모든 민족을 제자로 삼는 것입니다(마 28:19). 초심은 존재 이유에 충실한 마음입니다. 아름다움은 존재 이유에 충실할 때 빛납니다. 의사는 환자를 돌볼 때 아름답습니다. 교사는 학생들을 가르칠 때 아름답습니다. 사업가는 이윤과 함께 사람을 남겨 사회에 기여할 때 아름답습니다. 예술가는 감동을 주는 작품을 만들 때 아름답습니다. 음악하는 분은 울림을 주는 연주를 할 때 아름답습니다. 목회자는 상처 입은 영혼을 돌볼 때 아름답습니다. 교회는 새 생명을 구원할 때 아름답습니다. 사람을 구원하고, 사람을 키우고, 사람을 남길 때 아름답습니다. 그것이 전도입니다. 제자 훈련입니다. 또한 선교입니다. 우리 다시 초심으로 돌아가 새롭게 출발하도록 합시다. 성도님들의 아름다운 헌신에 깊이 감사드립니다. 귀한 교회를 세우시고 축복해 주신 하나님께 모든 영광을 올려드립니다.

Let’s Go Back to Our First Heart!

The first intent we have is the first heart we had. That is why the first heart is pure. The reason we are talking about going back to our first heart is because our church is celebrating 11th anniversary. The reason why we celebrate the church’s anniversary, celebrate birthdays, and celebrate wedding anniversaries is to remember. To celebrate means to remember. To remember is to bring back memories and reflect upon the precious experiences contained in our heart's treasure house. We must remember to celebrate. Celebrating means experiencing the first heart and the first love again.

In the Bible, God often tells the people to remember. Especially, God tells them to remember His salvation and grace. He also tells them to keep record so that they can teach their children the works of God's salvation. Keeping record is important because we can remember through recording. What is important is how you remember it and how you interpret what you remember. Also, it’s important how you react to your memory. I would like to share some insights on memories which Miroslav Wolf taught in his book, “The End of Memory.”

“Because we can react to our memories and shape them, we are larger than our memories. If our reactions to our memories were determined simply by the memories themselves, then we would be slaves of the past.” (Miroslav Wolf, “The End of Memory”)

Remembering events from the past means interpreting the past. Interpretation is important because interpretation of the past affects our present and future. Couples celebrating their wedding day of the past will affect their marriage today and their future, depending on how they remember and interpret the day. Above all, it is important to interpret our past from the perspective of God's providence. Then, the memories of the past will be reborn as blessed memories.

The first heart is like a humble heart. Beginners are humble. They cherish the small things. They are touched with even small things. Even a little help makes them shed tears. The first heart changes over time, and if it goes wrong, it deteriorates. Pure motives turn into ambitions. The impact of the small things, that once was precious, will cool down. Touching tears dry easily. When the tears of being touched disappear, the heart becomes hardened. It becomes desolate like a desert. Just as any land becomes a desert when it doesn't rain, our heart becomes a desert when tears disappear from our hearts. To cultivate the first heart, you need to cultivate a humble character.

The first heart is the learning heart. It is an open mind. It challenges and yet welcomes new changes. It's flexible because there's nothing set in a new beginning. It is goal-oriented. However, as the years pass, the regulations become more and more subdivided. Regulations help keep order, but if placed wrongly, it will make you less flexible. So regulations should be checked regularly and updated with better regulations. It is not good if anything hardens. We must go back to the beginning again and again and start anew. Only then can we continue to improve.

The first heart is the heart that cherishes the source. The source we cherish is God. God is the fountain of life (Psalm 36:9) and the source of living water (Jeremiah 17:13). The source we must hold onto is the Bible. It is the truth. Also, the duty of man is to fear God (Ecclesiastes 12;13). Those who value the source live by priorities. The priority of Christians is the kingdom and the righteousness of God (Matthew 6:33). Worshiping God is a priority. Jesus' vision is a priority. The vision Jesus gave us is evangelizing to the world. It is to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19).

The first heart is a heart that is faithful to the reason for existence. Beauty shines when it is faithful to its reason for existence. Doctors are beautiful when taking care of their patients. Teachers are beautiful when they are teaching students. Businessmen are beautiful when they contribute to society by raising people with profits. Artists are beautiful when they create artworks that touch people. Musicians are beautiful when they play resonant performances. Pastors are beautiful when they give care to the wounded souls. The church is beautiful when it saves new lives. It is beautiful when it comes to saving people, raising people up, and leaving people behind. That is evangelism. That is discipleship. And that is also missions. Let's go back to our first heart and start anew. Thank you very much for your beautiful dedication.
