[목회서신] 겸손은 지혜를 낳습니다! | Humility Produces Wisdom!

구약의 잠언은 지혜서입니다. 잠언은 지혜를 가르쳐 주는 책입니다. 잠언에서 가르쳐 주는 지혜 중의 하나는 겸손입니다. 잠언은 거듭 교만을 경계하고 겸손하라고 가르쳐줍니다. “사람의 마음의 교만은 멸망의 선봉이요 겸손은 존귀의 길잡이니라”(잠 18:12). 하나님은 교만한 자를 미워하십니다(잠 16:5). 하나님은 교만한 자를 대적하십니다(벧전 5:5). 반면에 하나님은 겸손한 자에게 은혜를 베풀어 주십니다(약 4:6). 겸손한 자에게 풍성한 복을 허락해 주십니다. “겸손과 여호와를 경외함의 보상은 재물과 영광과 생명이니라”(잠 22:4). 아담의 원죄는 교만과 불순종에 있습니다. 반면에 예수님의 구속의 비밀은 겸손과 순종에 있습니다(빌 2:8). 교만은 아담의 본성입니다. 반면에 겸손은 예수님의 본성이십니다. 우리는 예수님의 겸손을 배우고 익혀야 합니다.

앤드류 머레이는 그의 책 《겸손》에서 겸손의 중요성을 강조합니다. 그는 “하나님께 전적으로 의지하는 것, 즉 겸손이야말로 사람이 담당해야 할 첫째가는 의무요 최고의 덕이며, 모든 덕의 뿌리다.”고 말합니다. 그는 “교만은 바로 모든 죄와 악의 뿌리다. ... 자기를 높이는 교만이야말로 지옥의 문이요 지옥의 저주다.”고 말합니다. 교만은 아담의 본성, 즉 우리 인간의 본성이기에 교만을 위해 노력할 필요가 없습니다. 교만하기 위해 따로 세미나를 할 필요도 없습니다. 교만은 너무 자연스럽습니다. 그래서 세상에는 교만한 사람들이 많습니다. 반면에 겸손은 예수님의 본성, 즉 하나님의 본성이기에 배워야 합니다. 겸손하기 위해 노력해야 하고 훈련해야 합니다. 겸손처럼 힘들고 어려운 것은 없습니다. 평생 동안 쌓아야 할 덕이 겸손의 덕입니다.

하나님이 우리에게 겸손을 원하는 까닭은 우리의 행복을 위해서입니다. 겸손한 사람이 행복합니다. 그 이유는 겸손한 사람은 감사할 줄 알기 때문입니다. 자족할 줄 알기 때문입니다. 작은 은혜를 소중히 여길 줄 알기 때문입니다. 우리의 불안과 불만과 원망의 뿌리에 교만이 있습니다. 겸손한 가정은 행복합니다. 서로를 존귀히 여기기 때문입니다. 반면에 교만한 가정은 불행합니다. 서로를 무시하고 함부로 대하기 때문입니다. 겸손한 가정은 천국을 맛보며 살아갑니다. 반면에 교만한 가정은 지옥을 맛보며 살아갑니다. 겸손의 덕은 우리의 행복을 위해 반드시 쌓아야 할 덕입니다. 제게 가장 부족한 것이 겸손입니다. 그래서 날마다 겸손의 덕을 쌓기 위해 힘쓰고 있습니다. 겸손의 덕을 쌓는 중에 겸손한 사람들에게서 발견한 몇 가지 지혜를 나누고 싶습니다.

첫째, 겸손한 사람은 하나님을 항상 의지합니다. 자신이 부족하다는 것을 깨달은 겸손한 사람은 하나님을 항상 의지합니다. 다니엘은 하나님을 항상 의지했습니다(단 6:16, 20). 그런 까닭에 날마다 하루에 세 번씩 무릎을 꿇고 기도했습니다(단 6:10). 겸손한 사람은 하나님을 경외합니다. 겸손은 경외를 낳습니다. 잠언은 겸손과 하나님을 경외함을 함께 언급합니다. “여호와를 경외하는 것은 지혜의 훈계라 겸손은 존귀의 길잡이니라”(잠 15:33, 22:4 참조). 겸손한 사람은 하나님께 날마다 도움을 구합니다. 인간은 자존할 수 있는 존재가 아닙니다. 하나님의 도움을 받아야 풍성한 삶을 살 수 있습니다. 하나님의 말씀과 사랑을 먹어야 건강하게 살 수 있습니다. 하나님의 지혜와 능력을 공급받아야 승리하는 삶을 살 수 있습니다. 겸손한 사람은 날마다 기도합니다. 날마다 기도를 통해 하나님의 도움을 받습니다(시 46:5, 히 4:16).

둘째, 겸손한 사람은 잘 배웁니다. 겸손한 사람은 자신의 부족함을 압니다. 그래서 누구에게나 잘 배웁니다. 만나는 모든 사람들을 통해 배웁니다. 심지어 어린 아이들을 통해서도 배웁니다. 겸손한 사람은 성경을 통해 배우고, 좋은 책을 통해 배웁니다. 겸손한 사람은 책을 가까이 합니다. 그 이유는 아직도 배울 것이 많다고 생각하기 때문입니다. 겸손한 사람은 스승에게서 배우기를 갈망합니다. 겸손한 사람은 스승의 중요성을 알고, 스승을 존중합니다. 스승의 가르침 아래 머물기를 즐겨합니다. 바울은 교만하면 아무것도 알지 못한다고 말합니다(딤전 6:4). 그 이유는 교만한 사람은 배우려고 하지 않기 때문입니다. 배움을 멈추면 성장을 멈추게 됩니다. 성장을 멈추면 과거 속에 살게 됩니다. 과거가 전부인 것처럼 생각합니다. 하지만 잘 배우는 사람은 날마다 성장합니다. 잘 배우는 사람은 생각이 유연합니다. 잘 배우는 사람은 변화에 잘 적응합니다. 잘 배우는 사람은 다르게 생각할 줄 알고 다양한 각도에서 생각할 줄 압니다.

셋째, 겸손한 사람은 경청할 줄 압니다. 경청할 때 지혜를 얻게 됩니다. 말을 많이 하기보다 경청할 때 지혜를 얻게 됩니다. 경청하기 위해서는 침묵할 줄 알아야 합니다. 경청하기 위해서는 상대방을 존중할 줄 알아야 합니다. 경청하기 위해서는 상대방이 말할 때 집중할 줄 알아야 합니다. 침묵, 존중, 그리고 집중은 경청의 열매입니다. 경청을 잘하는 사람은 말을 아낄 줄 압니다. 말을 아낄 줄 아는 사람은 필요한 말, 적합한 말, 지혜로운 말을 하게 됩니다. 우리 함께 평생 동안 겸손의 덕을 쌓음으로 더욱 지혜로운 삶을 살도록 합시다.

Humility Produces Wisdom!

The book of Proverbs from the Old Testament is a book of wisdom. Proverbs is a book that teaches us wisdom. One of the wise teachings of Proverbs is humility. Proverbs repeatedly teaches us to guard ourselves against pride and to be humble. “Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 18:12). God hates the proud (Proverbs 16:5). God opposes the proud (1 Peter 5:5). On the other hand, God is gracious to the humble (James 4:6). He grants abundant blessings to the humble. “Humility and the fear of the Lord bring wealth and honor and life” (Proverbs 22:4). Adam's original sin was pride and disobedience. On the other hand, the secret of Jesus' redemption lies in humility and obedience (Philippians 2:8). Pride is Adam's nature. Humility, on the other hand, is the nature of Jesus. We must learn and practice the humility of Jesus.

Andrew Murray emphasizes the importance of humility in his book Humility. He says, “Humility, the place of entire dependence on God, is the first duty of the creature, and the root of every good quality.” He said, “Pride is the root of every sin and evil … pride is the gate and the curse of hell.” Because pride is Adam's nature, that is, our human nature, there is no need to strive for pride. There is no need for a separate seminar to be proud. Pride is so natural. So there are many proud people in the world. On the other hand, humility must be learned because it is the nature of Jesus, that is, the nature of God. You must try and train to be humble. There is nothing harder and more difficult than humility. The virtue that should be cultivated throughout life is the virtue of humility.

The reason God wants us to be humble is for our happiness. Humble people are happy. The reason is because the humble knows how to be grateful. Because they know how to be content. Because they know how to cherish the small moments of grace. Pride is at the root of our anxiety, dissatisfaction, and resentment. Humble families are happy. It is because they respect each other. On the other hand, proud families are unhappy. It is because they ignore each other and treat each other badly. A humble family lives with a taste of heaven. On the other hand, a proud family lives with a taste of hell. The virtue of humility is a virtue that must be cultivated for our happiness. What I lack the most is humility. That is why I am working hard to build the virtue of humility every day. I would like to share with you some wisdom I have found in humble people as they build the virtue of humility.

First, a humble person always depends on God. A humble person who realizes that he lacks is always dependent on God. Daniel always relied on God (Daniel 6:16, 20). That is why he prayed on his knees three times a day every day (Daniel 6:10). A humble person fears God. Humility produces awe. Proverbs speaks of humility and the fear of God together. “The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 15:33, cf. 22:4). A humble person turns to God, daily, for help. Humans are not self-sustaining beings. We need God's help so we can live an abundant life. We must eat God's Word and love to live a healthy life. We must be supplied with God's wisdom and power to live a victorious life. A humble person prays daily. He receives divine help through daily prayer (Psalm 46:5, Hebrews 4:16).

Second, a humble person learns well. A humble person knows his shortcomings. So he learns well from anyone. He learns from everyone he meets. Even he learns through young children. A humble person learns from the Bible, and learns from a good book. A humble person draws close to books. The reason is because he thinks that there are still a lot to learn. A humble person longs to learn from a teacher. A humble person knows the importance of a teacher and respects the teacher. He enjoys staying under his teacher's teaching. Paul says that in pride he knows nothing (1 Timothy 6:4). The reason is that the proud do not want to learn. When you stop learning, you stop growing. When you stop growing, you live in the past. You think the past is everything. But a person who learns well grows every day. A person who learns well is flexible in thinking. A person who learns well adapts well to change. A well-learned person can think differently and can think from different angles.

Third, the humble person knows how to listen. When you listen, you gain wisdom. You gain wisdom when you listen rather than talking a lot. To listen, you must learn to be silent. To listen, you need to be able to honor the other person. To listen, you need to be able to pay attention when the other person is speaking. Silence, honor, and concentration are the fruits of listening. A good listener knows how to speak sparingly. A man who knows how to speak sparingly will say what is necessary, what is appropriate, and what is wise. Let us live wiser lives together by accumulating the virtue of humility throughout our lives.
