[목회서신] 나무에게 배우는 지혜 | Wisdom Learned from a Tree

하나님은 자연 속에 하나님의 영광을 담아 두셨습니다. 또한 자연 속에 하나님의 지혜를 담아 두셨습니다. 자연을 잘 관찰하면 하나님의 지혜를 배울 수 있습니다. 하나님의 지혜는 나무속에도 감추어져 있습니다. 나무를 관찰하다가 나무처럼 살고 싶다는 생각을 했습니다.

나무는 먼저 뿌리를 가꿉니다. 위로 올라가기 전에 아래로 성장합니다. 뿌리는 지탱하고, 저장하고, 보존하고, 공급하는 역할을 합니다. 나무에게 필요한 것을 공급하는 원천이 뿌리에 있습니다. 나무의 미래는 뿌리에 달려 있습니다. 어떤 어려움이 와도 흔들리지 않을 수 있는 힘이 뿌리에 있습니다. 그래서 나무는 5년 정도, 뿌리를 견실히 가꾸는데 시간을 보냅니다. 나무는 서두르는 법이 없습니다. 하루하루 성실하게 자신을 가꿉니다. 나무는 뿌리를 키우기 위해 자신을 감출 줄 압니다. 우리는 서둘러 자신의 존재감을 드러내려고 하는 경향이 있습니다. 하지만 나무는 자신의 뿌리를 은닉할 줄 압니다. 나무는 어두운 땅 속에서 조용히 깊이 뿌리를 내립니다. 씨앗을 뿌린다고 모두 나무가 되는 것이 아닙니다. 땅 속에서 자신을 깨뜨려 뿌리를 내린 씨앗만이 나무가 되는 것입니다. 거목(巨木)이 되려는 나무는 뿌리를 보통 나무 보다 더 깊이 내립니다.

바울은 신앙 성장과 성숙의 여정을 뿌리 깊은 나무에 비유합니다. 그래서 예수님께 깊이 뿌리를 내리라고 권면합니다. “그 안에 뿌리를 박으며 세움을 받아 교훈을 받은 대로 믿음에 굳게 서서 감사함을 넘치게 하라”(골 2:7). 예수님께 뿌리를 깊이 내릴 때 견실하게, 그리고 균형 잡힌 영성으로 성장할 수 있습니다. 특별히 바울은 예수님의 사랑에 뿌리를 내리라고 권면합니다. “믿음으로 말미암아 그리스도께서 너희 마음에 계시게 하시옵고 너희가 사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어져서”(엡 3:17). 바울이 말하는 사랑은 하나님의 사랑입니다. 하나님의 사랑 가운데서 뿌리가 박히고 터가 굳어질 때 우리는 요동치 않는 인생을 살 수 있습니다.

나무는 산불이 나거나 가뭄의 때에 뿌리를 더욱 깊이 내립니다. 비가 많이 오고 물이 많으면, 나무는 뿌리를 깊이 내리려고 하지 않습니다. 하지만 산불이 나거나 가뭄의 때에는 뿌리를 깊이 내려, 땅 속 깊은 곳에서 생수를 끌어올립니다. 뿌리는 생수를 향해 뻗어 나갑니다. 우리 신앙도 마찬가지입니다. 언제 우리의 신앙이 깊어졌는지 생각해 보십시오. 우리 신앙이 깊어진 때는 고난의 때입니다. 우리는 인생의 폭풍우가 밀려 올 때, 또한 가뭄의 때에 하나님께 깊이 뿌리를 내리게 됩니다. 하나님께 깊이 뿌리를 내린 후에, 우리는 더욱 풍성한 삶을 살게 됩니다. 그런 까닭에 우리는 고난을 통과한 후에는 고난을 좋아하지는 않아도 고마워하게 됩니다.

나무는 태양을 향해 가지를 뻗을 줄 압니다. 태양은 모든 생명의 원천입니다. 나무에게 태양은 생장(生長)하는 데 가장 중요한 역할을 합니다. 태양 볕을 잘 받지 못하면 뿌리가 견실하지 못합니다. 또한 태양을 향해 뻗어 나가는 가지를 통해 나머지 가지들도 잘 자라게 됩니다. 나무가 태양을 바라보며 뻗어 나가듯이 우리는 태양을 만드신 하나님을 늘 바라보아야 합니다. 해바라기가 해를 바라보듯이 우리는 하나님을 바라보아야 합니다. 하나님을 앙망하는 자는 힘을 얻습니다. 지속적으로 성장합니다. 하나님은 생명의 원천이십니다. “진실로 생명의 원천이 주께 있사오니 주의 빛 안에서 우리가 빛을 보리이다”(시 36:9).

나무는 묵묵히 자기 자리를 지킵니다. 나무는 말이 없습니다. 어렵다고 자리를 뜨지 않습니다. 끝까지 포기하지 않고 자리를 지킵니다. 나무의 일생은 버팀의 일생입니다. 폭풍우가 몰아쳐도 나무는 버티고 또 버티어 냅니다. 버팀은 견딤입니다. 견딤이 있을 때 쓰임이 있습니다. 견디는 것만큼 쓰임을 받게 됩니다. 나무는 버팀과 견딤을 통해 서서히 거목이 됩니다. 고목(古木)이 아니라 거목(巨木)이 되길 원한다면 버틸 줄 알아야 합니다. 힘들어도 견뎌낼 줄 알아야 합니다. 우직하게 자리를 지킬 줄 알아야 합니다.

나무는 풍성한 열매를 맺어 나누어 줍니다. 나무는 자신을 위해 열매를 맺지 않습니다. 나무는 자신이 맺은 열매를 먹는 법이 없습니다. 나무가 열매를 맺는 가장 중요한 이유는 재생산을 위해서입니다. 열매 속에는 씨앗이 담겨 있습니다. 새와 다람쥐와 동물들과 사람들이 열매를 먹고 배설하면 그 배설을 통해 씨앗이 땅에 심기어지게 됩니다. 나무는 아낌없이 나누어줍니다. 또한 가을이 오고 겨울이 오면 모든 것을 비울 줄 압니다. 비움을 통해 채움을 준비합니다. 하나님은 우리가 나누고 비우기를 원하십니다. 인생은 나눔을 통해 풍성해 집니다. 비움을 통해 채우게 됩니다. 나무는 풍성한 열매를 통해 그를 창조하신 하나님께 영광을 돌립니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 열매를 많이 맺을 때 하나님이 영광을 받으십니다. “너희가 열매를 많이 맺으면 내 아버지께서 영광을 받으실 것이요 너희는 내 제자가 되리라”(요 15:8). 하나님이 지으신 나무에게 배운 지혜를 통해 풍성한 열매를 맺으시길 빕니다.

Wisdom Learned from a Tree

God has placed His glory in nature. He also has placed His wisdom in nature. By observing nature well, we can learn the wisdom of God. God's wisdom is hidden in nature, even in trees, as well. As I observed the trees, an idea came to mind that I wanted to live like trees.

Trees take care of their roots first. They grow downwards before going up. Roots are responsible for supporting, storing, conserving and supplying the tree. The source that supplies the tree with what it needs is in its roots. The future of a tree depends on its roots. The strength not to be shaken no matter how difficult the circumstance is lies in its root. Therefore, trees spend about five years to take care of its roots firmly. Trees are never in a hurry. They take care of themselves diligently every day. Trees know how to hide themselves in order to grow their roots. We tend to rush ourselves to make ourselves known. But trees know how to hide their roots. Trees take root quietly and deeply in the dark ground. Not every seed planted becomes a tree. Only the seed that breaks itself in the ground and takes root becomes a tree. Trees that want to become giant trees have their roots down deeper than ordinary trees.

Paul compares the journey of the growth and maturity of one’s faith to a deep-rooted tree. So he exhorts us to take root deeply in Jesus. “Rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:7). When we are deeply rooted in Jesus, we can grow into a strong and balanced spirituality. In particular, Paul exhorts us to be rooted in the love of Jesus. “So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love” (Ephesians 3:17). The love Paul is talking about is the love of God. When we are rooted and established in God’s love, we can live a life that is not easily shaken.

Trees take root more deeply in times of wildfire or drought. When it rains and there is a lot of water, the tree doesn't try to get deep roots. However, in times of wildfire or drought, it takes root deep and draws up living water from the depths of the earth. As the roots extend towards the living water, so does our faith. Think about when our faith deepened. It was at times of hardship, when our faith deepened. We are deeply rooted in God when life's storms come, and also in times of drought. After we are deeply rooted in God, we have an abundant life. That is why, after going through suffering, we become grateful even if we do not like it.

Trees know how to stretch their branches toward the sun. The sun is the source of all life. For trees, the sun plays the most important part in their life and growth. If it does not receive enough sunlight, the roots will not be strong. Also, the branches that extend toward the sun will help the rest of the branches grow. Just as a tree stretches out looking at the sun, we should always look to the God who made the sun. As sunflowers look to the sun, we must look to God. Those who wait for God will gain strength. They grow continuously. God is the source of life. “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light” (Psalm 36:9).

Trees silently keep their place. Trees do not speak. They do not leave even in hard circumstances. They keep their place without giving up until the end. The life of a tree is the life of perseverance. Even in storms, the trees remain firm, again and again. To withstand is to endure. There is a purpose when there is endurance. You will be used for a purpose as much as you endure. Trees gradually become giants through holding up endurance. If you want to become a giant tree, not an old tree, you need to know how to endure. You must know how to persevere even when it's hard. We need to be able to keep our place with simple honesty.

Trees produce and share abundant fruit. Trees do not bear fruit for themselves. A tree never eats its own fruit. The most important reason a tree bears fruit is for reproduction. The fruit contains seeds. Birds, squirrels, animals, and people eat and excrete the fruit, and the seeds are planted in the ground through their excretion. Trees give generously. Also, when autumn and winter comes, trees know how to empty themselves. They prepare for the filling by emptying. God wants us to share and empty ourselves. Life is enriched through sharing. Life is being filled by emptying. The tree glorifies the God who created it through its abundant fruit. So are we. God is glorified when we bear much fruit. “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples” (John 15:8). I pray that you will bear abundant fruit through the wisdom you learn from the trees God made.
