[목회서신] 놓아버림은 영성 훈련입니다! | Letting Go is a Spiritual Discipline!

놓아버림은 소중한 영성 훈련 중의 하나입니다. 놓아버림은 자포자기가 아닙니다. 놓아버림은 자유에 이르는 길입니다. 예수님은 우리에게 자유를 주시기 위해 오셨습니다. “진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 하리라”(요 8:32). 자유는 방종이 아닙니다. 참된 자유란 마땅히 해야 할 것을 행하고 하지 말아야 할 것을 하지 않는 것입니다. 참된 자유는 마땅히 붙들어야 할 것을 붙들고 놓아버려야 할 것을 놓아버리는 것입니다.

놓아버림이 생각보다 쉽지 않습니다. 우리는 이것만은 결코 놓을 수 없다는 어떤 것을 가지고 있습니다. 모든 것을 다 내어놓아도 이것 한 가지만은 결코 내어놓을 수 없다는 어떤 것을 가지고 있습니다. 그것이 우리 삶을 자유롭지 못하게 만듭니다. 아브라함에게 그것은 그의 사랑하는 독자 이삭이었습니다. 하나님은 아브라함에게 이삭을 선물로 주셨습니다.

이삭이 태어난 이후로 아브라함은 이삭을 사랑했습니다. 이삭에 대한 사랑이 깊어지면서 그에 대한 집착이 생겼습니다. 그는 언제나 이삭을 생각하고, 이삭을 염려했습니다. 그는 선물을 주신 하나님보다 하나님이 주신 선물에 집착하게 되었습니다. 그가 이삭을 소유한 어느 날부터, 이삭의 노예가 되었습니다. 때로는 우리가 소유한 것이 우리를 소유해 버립니다. 우리는 우리가 원하는 것을 소유하면 그 소유한 것이 우리를 자유케 해 줄 것이라고 믿고 삽니다. 하지만 꼭 그렇지 않습니다. 우리가 소유한 것이 우리를 소유해 버리고, 우리가 소유한 것에 얽매여 살 때가 많습니다. 물론 모든 소유가 우리를 노예로 만드는 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 우리가 놓아버려야 할 것을 놓지 못할 때 놓지 못한 것의 노예가 될 수 있습니다.

아브라함이 이삭을 하나님께 바치던 날, 그는 놀라운 자유를 경험합니다. 그는 하나님께 이삭을 놓아버렸습니다. 놓아버림은 내려놓음입니다. 하나님께 그의 고귀한 보배를 내려놓았습니다. 놓아버림은 양도(讓渡)입니다. 양도(讓渡)란 재산이나 물건이나 권리나 법적 지위를 남에게 넘겨주는 것입니다. 그는 하나님께 그의 아들 이삭을 양도했습니다. 사실 하나님이 주신 선물을 하나님께 돌려 드린 것입니다. 하나님께 맡겨드린 것입니다. 벌거벗은 몸으로 태어난 우리가 무엇을 소유했다고 주장하는 것 자체가 모순일 수 있습니다. 우리가 태어나서 얻은 모든 것은 사실은 하나님께 받은 선물입니다.

아브라함이 이삭을 하나님께 내어드렸을 때 하나님은 그에게 예비하신 숫양을 바치게 했습니다. 그리고 이삭을 다시 그의 품에 돌려주셨습니다. 그날 이후로 아브라함은 자유인이 되었습니다. 그는 모든 것을 소유했지만 아무것도 소유하지 않은 자유인이 되었습니다. 그 이유는 그가 모든 것을 하나님께 맡긴 까닭입니다. 그가 모든 것을 내려놓은 대신에 가장 소중한 분을 소유한 까닭입니다. 그분은 하나님이십니다. 하나님을 소유한 사람은 가장 부요한 사람입니다. 가장 자유로운 사람입니다. 이삭처럼 소중히 여기는 것 외에도 우리가 놓아버리고 맡겨야 할 것이 많습니다. 우리의 선입견, 편견, 탐욕, 과거의 상처, 부정적인 생각과 감정, 미움, 질투, 복수심 등 많은 것을 놓아버려야 합니다. 십자가 앞에 내려놓아야 합니다.

놓아버림은 놓아줌입니다. 아프리카 원주민들이 원숭이를 잡는 법을 들어 보셨을 것입니다. 원주민들은 손만 간신히 들어갈 정도의 항아리에 원숭이가 좋아하는 견과류나 과일을 넣어 둡니다. 원숭이는 냄새를 맡고 항아리에 손을 넣습니다. 원숭이는 손에 먹이를 움켜쥘 수 있습니다. 하지만 먹이를 움켜쥔 채로 손을 뺄 수는 없습니다. 원숭이가 손에 움켜쥔 먹이를 놓아주면 살 수 있습니다. 그것을 놓지 않기 때문에 원숭이는 붙잡히게 됩니다.

놓아버림은 잘 흐르게 놓아주는 것입니다. 흐르는 물은 썩지 않습니다. 고인 물이 썩습니다. 무엇이든 멈추어 있는 것은 좋지 않습니다. 흘러야 생명이 넘칩니다. 우리 손 안에 있는 씨앗은 결코 열매를 맺을 수 없습니다. 땅속으로 들어가도록 놓아주어야 합니다. 나무에 끝까지 매달려 있는 도토리는 결코 거대한 참나무가 될 수 없습니다. 도토리는 땅에 떨어져야 합니다. 겨울나무는 모든 것을 벗어 버립니다. 모든 것을 벗어버릴 때 나목(裸木)이 됩니다. 나목(裸木)이 된 겨울나무는 봄이 되면 싹이 트고 꽃을 피우고 열매를 맺습니다. 자신을 비운 까닭에 새봄을 맞이한 것입니다.

과거를 놓아줄 때 새로운 미래가 열립니다. 매듭지어야 할 인연을 놓아줄 때 새로운 만남이 전개됩니다. 오래된 것을 놓아주어야 새로운 것이 찾아옵니다. 놓아주는 것을 너무 두려워하지 마십시오. 놓아주는 훈련을 날마다 하십시오. 예수님이 자신의 생명을 하나님 아버지께 맡겼을 때 부활이 시작되었습니다. 우리는 생명을 놓아줌으로 생명을 얻게 됩니다. 곧 옛사람이 죽을 때 새사람이 태어납니다. 놓아주는 훈련, 내려놓는 훈련, 흘려보내는 훈련을 날마다 하십시오. 그 길이 참된 자유를 경험하는 길입니다. 풍성한 삶을 누리는 길입니다.

Letting Go is a Spiritual Discipline!

The act of letting go is one of the most precious disciplines among the other spiritual disciplines. Letting go is not resignation. Letting go is the path to freedom. Jesus came to give us freedom, saying, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). Freedom is not self-indulgence. True freedom is doing what should be done and refraining from what should not be done. True freedom is holding onto what should be held onto and letting go of those that should be let go.

Letting go is not as easy as it seems. We all have something that we cannot let go of. Even if we were to let go of everything else, there is one thing that we cannot let go of. It keeps us from experiencing true freedom in our lives. For Abraham, it was his beloved son Isaac. God had given Isaac to Abraham as a gift.

After the birth of Isaac, Abraham loved him deeply. As his love for Isaac grew, he developed an attachment to him. He constantly thought about Isaac and worried about him. He became more attached to the gift God had given him than to the God who had given him the gift. From the day he possessed Isaac, he became a slave to Isaac. Sometimes, what we possess ends up possessing us. We believe that when we possess what we desire, it will set us free. However, that is not always the case. We often find ourselves enslaved by what we own and entangled in our possessions. Of course, not all ownership makes us slaves. But when we are unable to let go of what we should let go of, we can become slaves to what we cannot let go of.

On the day when Abraham offered Isaac to God, he experienced remarkable freedom. He let go of Isaac to God. Letting go is an act of laying down. He laid down his precious treasure to God. Letting go is a relinquishment. Relinquishment means transferring one's property, belongings, rights, or legal status to someone else. He surrendered his son Isaac to God. In fact, he returned the gift given by God back to God. He entrusted it to God. It can be contradictory for us, who are born naked, to claim ownership of anything. Everything we have gained since birth is, in fact, a gift from God.

When Abraham offered Isaac to God, God provided a ram as a substitute in advance. And He returned Isaac to Abraham's embrace. Since that day, Abraham became a freeman. He possessed everything, yet he owned nothing as a freeman. The reason is because he entrusted everything to God. Instead of holding onto everything, he possessed the most precious being, which is God Himself. The one who possesses God is the wealthiest person. He is the freest person. Apart from precious things like Isaac, there are many things we need to let go of and entrust to God. We must release many other things like our prejudices, biases, greed, past wounds, negative thoughts and emotions, hatred, jealousy, and desire for revenge. We must let them go at the cross.

Letting go is releasing. You may have heard of how African natives catch monkeys. They place nuts or fruits that monkeys love inside a jar that only their hand can barely fit into. The monkey smells the food and puts its hand into the jar. The monkey can grasp the food in its hand. However, it cannot remove its hand from the jar while holding onto the food. The monkey can survive only by letting go of the food it holds. But because it doesn't let go, the monkey becomes trapped.

Letting go is letting things flow freely. Flowing water does not corrupt. Stagnant water is bound to corrupt. It is not good for anything to be at a standstill. Life overflows when it flows. The seeds in our hands can never bear fruit. They must be released to go into the ground. An acorn hanging onto a tree branch will never become a mighty oak tree. Acorns must fall to the ground. The winter tree sheds everything. When it sheds everything, it becomes bare wood. When the winter tree becomes bare wood, it sprouts in spring, blooms flowers, and bears fruit. It welcomes the new spring because it empties itself.

When you let go of the past, a new future unfolds. When you release the ties that need to be untangled, new encounters unfold. You must let go of the old for new things to come. Do not be too afraid of letting go. Practice the art of letting go every day. When Jesus entrusted his life to God the Father, resurrection began. By letting go of our lives, we gain life. As the old self dies, a new self is born. Practice the discipline of letting go, laying down, and letting life flow, every day. That is the path to experiencing true freedom. It is the path to enjoying an abundant life.
