[목회서신] 독서 노트는 나의 유통 창고입니다 | Reading Notes Are My Distribution Warehouse

     저는 생산업자가 아니라 유통업자입니다. 저는 일찍 제 한계를 깨달았습니다. 무언가를 새롭게 생산하는 능력이 제게 부족하다는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 하지만 이미 존재하는 좋은 것을 유통하는 것은 가능하다는 것도 깨달았습니다. 유통업이란 이미 존재하는 좋은 것을 필요한 사람에게 전달하는 일입니다. 어떤 사람이 생산한 지식이나 상품, 제품을 필요한 사람에게 전해 주는 일입니다. 만드는 사람이 ‘생산자’라면 전달해 주는 사람은 ‘유통자’입니다. 조금 더 설명하면, 유통업이란 좋은 것을 혼자 소유하지 않고 다른 사람이 누릴 수 있도록 흘려보내는 일입니다.

어떤 면에서 그리스도인은 모두 유통업에 종사하는 사람들입니다. 우리는 하나님께 받은 것을 다른 사람들에게 흘려보내는 사람들입니다. 나누기 위해서는 먼저 받아야 합니다. 받지 않은 것은 나눌 수 없습니다. 우리는 받은 것을 나눌 수 있고, 받은 만큼 나눌 수 있습니다. 하나님의 말씀을 받을 때, 그 말씀을 나눌 수 있습니다. 하나님의 은혜를 받을 때, 그 은혜를 나눌 수 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑을 받을 때, 그 사랑을 나눌 수 있습니다. 하나님의 복을 받을 때, 그 복을 나눌 수 있습니다. 배움도 받음입니다. 우리가 누군가에게서, 어떤 책에서 무엇을 배웠다는 것은 소중한 지식을 전수 받은 것입니다. 그것을 전수하는 것이 유통입니다.

저의 정체성 중의 하나는 유통업자입니다. 저는 목회자입니다. 그리고 저술가입니다. 사실 저의 원초적인 부르심은 목회자입니다. 저술가로서의 부르심은 목회를 하던 중에 깨달은 부차적인 소명입니다. 저는 하나님의 말씀을 유통합니다. 복음을 유통합니다. 독서와 학습을 통해 전수받은 지식을 유통합니다. 정보와 지혜를 흘려보냅니다. 좋은 명언과 좋은 문장을 나눕니다. 묵상 중에 깨달은 것도 유통합니다.

제가 책을 읽는 중요한 이유 가운데 하나는 유통하기 위해서입니다. 저는 한 주간에 여러 권의 책을 읽습니다. 책을 읽을 때 가능하면 독서 노트를 만듭니다. 유통하고 싶은 좋은 내용, 좋은 문장, 좋은 명언을 기록합니다. 요즘은 대부분 컴퓨터에 입력합니다. 제 독서 노트는 단순한 요약 노트가 아닙니다. 좋은 것을 흘려보내기 위해 준비해 둔 ‘유통 창고’입니다. 그 안에는 설교와 글로 전하고 싶은 문장들이 담겨 있습니다. 다른 사람에게 전하고 싶은 깨달음도 담겨 있습니다. 저는 책을 읽을 때 “이 좋은 글을 누구에게 흘려보낼까?”를 생각합니다. 읽는 순간, 이미 유통은 시작됩니다. 기록하는 것은 쌓아 두는 일이 아니라 흘려보낼 준비를 하는 일입니다.

이번 주에 읽은 책에서 전수하고 싶은 문장을 나눕니다. 알랭 드 보통은 이렇게 말했습니다. “걱정 없는 인생을 바라지 말고 걱정에 물들지 않는 연습을 하라.” 걱정에 물드는 것은 좋은 것이 아닙니다. 에픽테토스는 말했습니다. “행복에 이르는 유일한 길은 자신의 의지로도 어쩔 수 없는 것들에 대한 걱정을 그만두는 것이다.” 우리가 통제할 수 없는 일은 내려놓아야 합니다. 하나님께 맡겨야 합니다. 우리는 걱정에 물들기보다 하나님의 말씀에 물들고, 하나님의 사랑에 물들고, 하나님의 소망에 물드는 삶을 살아야 합니다.

걱정이 생길 때, 걱정이 우리를 사로잡기 전에 움직여야 합니다. 산책하는 것도 지혜입니다. 걱정 대신 기도해야 합니다. 걱정할 시간에 성경을 읽어야 합니다. 걱정 대신 찬양해야 합니다. 물론 인생 여정에서 걱정할 일이 생깁니다. 그러나 걱정에 물들고, 걱정에 사로잡히는 삶은 하나님이 원하시는 삶이 아닙니다. 우리는 하나님의 사랑에 사로잡힌 삶을 살아야 합니다(고후 5:14). 소크라테스는 말했습니다. “가장 적은 것으로도 만족하는 사람이 가장 부유한 사람이다.” 진정한 행복은 자족과 만족에 있습니다. 아무리 많이 소유해도 만족하지 못하면 그 사람은 가난한 사람입니다. 탈무드에는 이런 말이 나옵니다. “물고기는 항상 입으로 낚인다. 인간도 역시 입으로 걸린다.” 말조심, 입조심에 대한 지혜입니다.

유통에 모범을 보이신 분은 예수님이십니다. 예수님은 창조주이십니다. 그러나 이 땅에 사시는 동안 겸손히 하나님 아버지께 받은 것을 전하셨습니다. 스스로 행하시기보다 성령님과 함께 일하셨습니다. “내 교훈은 내 것이 아니요 나를 보내신 이의 것이니라”(요 7:16). “하나님이 보내신 이는 하나님의 말씀을 하나니 이는 하나님이 성령을 한량없이 주심이니라”(요 3:34).“ 내가 하나님의 성령을 힘입어 귀신을 쫓아내는 것이면 하나님의 나라가 이미 너희에게 임하였느니라”(마 12:28). 예수님의 겸손은 말씀의 출처가 하나님 아버지이신 것을 밝히신 데 있습니다. 능력의 출처가 성령님이신 것을 밝히신 데 있습니다.

사도 바울도 유통하는 삶을 살았습니다. 그가 먼저 받은 복음을 전해 주었습니다. “내가 받은 것을 먼저 너희에게 전하였노니 이는 성경대로 그리스도께서 우리 죄를 위하여 죽으시고 장사 지낸 바 되셨다가 성경대로 사흘 만에 다시 살아나사”(고전 15:3-4). 또한 바울은 영의 아들 디모데에게 이렇게 권면합니다. “또 네가 많은 증인 앞에서 내게 들은 바를 충성된 사람들에게 부탁하라 그들이 또 다른 사람들을 가르칠 수 있으리라”(딤후 2:2).

우리는 세상을 놀라게 할 작품을 생산하는 사람들이 아닙니다. 세상을 살릴 복음을 흘려보내는 사람들입니다. 하나님의 사랑을 유통하는 사람들입니다. 하나님만이 창조자이십니다. 우리는 하나님께서 맡기신 것을 관리하고 유통하는 청지기입니다. 유통이 막히면 생명이 위협받습니다. 유통이 막히면 혼란이 생깁니다. 유통이 막히면 병이 듭니다. 그러므로 유통하는 사람은 성실해야 합니다. 충성되어야 합니다. 좋은 것이 머물러 썩지 않도록 흘려보내는 통로가 되어야 합니다. 우리 함께 충성된 유통업자의 사명을 감당합시다.

Reading Notes Are My Distribution Warehouse

   I am not a producer; I am a distributor. I became aware of my limitation early on—that I lack the ability to produce something new. But I also realized that it is possible to distribute something already good. Distribution is the act of delivering something already good to someone who needs it. It is passing on knowledge, goods, or products that someone else has produced to someone who needs them. If the person who makes is the “producer,” then the person who passes it on is the “distributor.” To explain further, distribution means not hoarding what is good, but letting others enjoy it.

In some sense, all Christians are people engaged in distribution. We are those who pass on to others what we have received from God. To give, one must first receive. What you haven’t received, you cannot give. We can share what we have received, and we can share only as much as we have received. When we receive God’s Word, we can share that Word. When we receive God’s grace, we can share that grace. When we receive God’s love, we can share that love. When we receive God’s blessing, we can share that blessing. Learning is also receiving. Saying that we have learned something from someone or from a book means we have been entrusted with valuable knowledge—and passing that on is distribution.

One of my identities is that of a distributor. I am a pastor. And I am a writer. In fact, my primary calling is to be a pastor; my calling as an author is a secondary vocation I discovered in the course of ministry. I distribute God’s Word. I distribute the gospel. I distribute the knowledge I have received through reading and study. I let information and wisdom flow. I share good quotes and good sentences. I also distribute what I have realized during meditation.

One important reason I read books is to distribute what I have learned. In a typical week I read several books. When I read, I make reading notes whenever possible—recording good content, good sentences, and good quotes that I want to distribute. These days I mostly input them into a computer. My reading notes are not simple summaries. They are a distribution warehouse prepared to let good things flow. Inside are sentences I want to pass on as sermons or in writing. There are insights I want to share with others. When I read, I think, “Who should I let this good writing flow to?” The moment I read, distribution has already begun. Recording is not stockpiling; it is preparing to let it flow.

From the books I read this week, I share some sentences I want to pass on. Alain de Botton said, “Do not wish for a life without worries; practice not being dyed by your anxieties.” Worrying is not good. Epictetus said, “The only way to happiness is to cease worrying about things beyond the power of our will.” We must let go of things we cannot control. We must entrust them to God. We should be soaked not in worry, but in God’s Word, in God’s love, and in God’s hope.

When worry arises, we must act before it grips us. Taking a walk can itself be wisdom. Instead of worry, we should pray. In the time we might spend worrying, we should read the Bible. Instead of worry, we should praise. Of course, there will be things in life that cause worry. But a life soaked in worry and seized by anxiety is not the life God desires. We must live a life seized by God’s love (2 Corinthians 5:14). Socrates said, “The person who is most content with the least is the richest person.” True happiness lies in contentment and sufficiency. No matter how much one possesses, if they are not satisfied, they are poor. The Talmud says, “Fish always get caught by the mouth. Humans too are caught by the mouth.” It is wisdom about careful speech and guarding the tongue.

The supreme example of distribution is Jesus. Jesus is the Creator. Yet during His time on earth, He humbly passed on to others what He received from the Father. Rather than acting on His own, He worked with the Holy Spirit. “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me” (John 7:16). “Whoever has received it has testified to this: that God is true” (John 3:34). “If I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you” (Matthew 12:28). Jesus’ humility is seen in acknowledging that the source of His words is the Father and the source of His power is the Spirit.

The Apostle Paul also lived a distributing life. He passed on the gospel he first received: “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3–4). Paul also encourages his spiritual son Timothy: “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:2).

We are not people who will produce works that shock the world. We are those who let flow the gospel that saves the world. We are distributors of God’s love. God alone is the Creator. We are stewards who manage and distribute what God has entrusted to us. When distribution is blocked, life is threatened. When distribution is blocked, chaos arises. When distribution is blocked, sickness comes. Therefore, those who distribute must be faithful. They must be loyal. They must be a channel through which good things flow so they do not stagnate and rot. Let us together fulfill the mission of faithful distributors.
