[목회서신] 문제를 압도하는 하나님의 풍성한 은혜 | God’s abundant Grace of Overpowering Problems

제가 만나 본 모든 사람에게는 문제가 있었습니다. 겉으로 아무 문제가 없어 보인 분도 30분만 깊은 대화를 나누어 보면 문제가 서서히 드러나는 것을 봅니다. 문제가 없는 사람은 없습니다. 문제가 없는 가정은 없습니다. 문제가 없는 교회는 없습니다. 문제가 없는 나라는 없습니다. 우리는 문제와 더불어 살아갑니다. 언제나 문제는 우리 곁에 있습니다. 그런데 문제만 있는 것이 아니라 하나님의 은혜가 함께 합니다. 문제 때문에 무너지지 않습니다. 하지만 하나님의 은혜가 없으면 무너집니다. 그 이유는 하나님의 풍성한 은혜가 문제보다 더 크기 때문입니다. 하나님의 은혜가 풍성하면 문제는 더 이상 문제가 아닙니다. 하나님의 은혜는 문제를 압도하는 은혜입니다.

창세기 6장에 보면 온 땅이 부패했다고 기록되어 있습니다. 그런데 하나님의 은혜가 노아와 함께 했습니다. “그러나 노아는 여호와께 은혜를 입었더라”(창 6:8). 방주를 만들었던 노아도 나중에 보면 문제가 많은 사람입니다. 술에 취해 벌거벗고 잠을 자면서 드러내서는 안 될 부분까지 드러냈습니다. 함이 자기 수치를 덮어주지 않았다고 함의 아들인 가나안을 저주합니다(창 9:25). 그런데 하나님이 노아의 가정에 베푸신 은혜 때문에 노아의 후손이 보존됩니다.

아브라함의 가정도 문제가 많았습니다. 아브라함은 자신의 생명을 보존하기 위해 아내 사라를 누이라고 두 번이나 속입니다. 그는 하갈을 통해 이스마엘을 낳습니다. 이스마엘이 태어나면서 사라는 슬픈 여자가 됩니다. 그런데 하나님의 풍성한 은혜가 아브라함의 가정에 함께함으로 그의 후손을 통해 놀라운 구속의 역사가 전개됩니다.

야곱의 가정은 문제가 더 많았습니다. 야곱은 아내가 네 명이나 되었습니다. 그들 가운데 태어난 아들들이 12명이었습니다. 친형제들이 요셉을 질투함으로 그를 구덩이에 던집니다. 그를 은 20에 팝니다. 그들은 동생을 인신매매하는 악한 죄를 지었습니다. 그런데 하나님의 풍성한 은혜가 요셉과 함께 했습니다. 요셉이 복을 받고 만민의 생명을 살리게 됩니다. 하나님의 은혜가 악을 선으로 바꾸어버렸습니다(창 50:20). 하나님의 압도하는 은혜가 악을 선으로 바꾼 것입니다.

다윗의 가정은 야곱 가정보다 문제가 더 많았습니다. 다윗은 간음죄를 범했습니다. 살인죄를 범했습니다. 압살롬이 그의 형제를 죽였습니다. 압살롬이 반역을 꾀함으로 아버지를 왕좌에서 내려오게 했습니다. 정말 기가 막힌 가정입니다. 그런데 하나님의 풍성한 은혜가 다윗과 함께함으로 다윗의 후손 가운데 예수님이 오시게 됩니다.

베드로는 예수님을 세 번이나 부인했습니다. 예수님의 모든 제자들이 예수님이 십자가를 지실 때 예수님을 버리고 도망갔습니다(마 26:56). 바울은 한 때 비방자, 박해자, 그리고 폭행자였습니다(딤전 1:13). 스데반을 죽이는 일에 관여했던 사람입니다. 그런데 베드로와 예수님의 제자들과 바울에게 하나님의 은혜가 함께 했습니다. 하나님의 은혜는 거저 주시는 은혜입니다(엡 1:6). 하나님의 은혜는 풍성한 은혜입니다(엡 1:7, 2:7; 딤전 1:14). 하나님의 은혜는 크십니다(시 145:7). 하나님의 은혜는 차고 넘치는 은혜입니다(고후 9:8). 우리가 사모해야 할 것은 은혜입니다. 우리가 의지해야 할 것도 은혜입니다. 은혜 없이는 살아갈 수 없습니다.

하나님의 은혜는 우리를 구원하시는 은혜입니다. “너희는 그 은혜에 의하여 믿음으로 말미암아 구원을 받았으니 이것은 너희에게서 난 것이 아니요 하나님의 선물이라”(엡 2:8). 하나님의 은혜는 긍휼히 여기시는 은혜입니다(엡 2:4; 롬 9:15). 하나님이 우리를 불쌍히 여기실 때 놀라운 일들이 전개 됩니다. 성경에 나타난 놀라운 기적은 모두 하나님의 긍휼에서 시작됩니다.

하나님의 은혜는 용서하시는 은혜입니다. 하나님의 용서하시는 은혜는 우리의 죄보다 더 큰 능력입니다. 하나님의 용서는 우리 죄를 덮고, 우리를 예수님의 피로 정결케 합니다. 우리 죄를 기억하지도 않으십니다(히 10:17). 우리 모든 죄를 십자가에서 제하여 버리십니다(골 2:14).

하나님의 은혜는 회복의 은혜입니다. 상실과 질병과 갈등으로부터 우리를 회복시켜 주시는 은혜입니다. 예수님은 하나님과 원수 된 우리를 화목케 하시기 위해 십자가에서 죽으셨습니다. 예수님의 은혜로 우리는 하나님과의 관계를 회복하게 되었습니다. 하나님의 은혜는 다시 시작하게 하시는 은혜입니다. 예수님을 세 번이나 부인한 베드로를 찾아가셔서 그와의 관계를 회복하십니다. 그리고 그에게 다시 시작할 수 있는 은혜를 베푸십니다.

하나님의 은혜는 부족한 우리를 그리스도의 일꾼으로 세우신 은혜입니다. 하나님의 은혜로 우리는 하나님의 일꾼(고후 6:4), 교회의 일꾼(골 1:25), 복음의 일꾼이 되었습니다(골 1:23). 우리는 날마다 은혜의 보좌 앞으로 나아가서 하나님의 은혜를 구해야 합니다(히 4:16). 하나님의 풍성한 은혜는 문제를 압도합니다. 은혜만이 문제를 기적으로 바꿉니다. 은혜만이 문제를 축복으로 바꿉니다. 은혜만이 문제를 잘 견디어 보석으로 만들도록 도와줍니다. 은혜가 바닥나면 모든 것이 힘들어집니다. 하지만 하나님의 풍성한 은혜가 임하면 모든 것이 풍성해집니다. 하나님의 풍성한 은혜가 늘 함께하시길 빕니다.

God’s abundant Grace of Overpowering Problems

In everyone I have met, I have noticed that they all had problems. Even those who appear to have no issues on the surface, when you spend just 30 minutes with them and engage in deep conversation, you begin to see the problems gradually revealing themselves. There is no one without problems. There is no family without problems. There is no church without problems. There is no nation without problems. We live alongside problems. Problems are always present near us. However, it's not just problems that exist; God's grace is also present. We do not crumble because of problems, but we would crumble without God's grace. The reason is because God's abundant grace is greater than the problems. When God's grace is abundant, problems cease to be problems. God's grace overpowers problems.

In Genesis chapter 6, it is recorded that the whole earth was corrupt. However, God's grace was with Noah. "But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord" (Genesis 6:8). Even Noah, who built the ark, was a man with many problems. He exposed himself in a shameful manner while intoxicated, revealing parts that should not have been seen. He cursed Canaan, the son of Ham, because Ham did not cover his nakedness (Genesis 9:25). However, because of the grace bestowed by God upon Noah's family, Noah's descendants were preserved.

Abraham's household also had many problems. Abraham, in order to preserve his own life, deceived others by presenting his wife Sarah as his sister, twice. Through Hagar, he fathered Ishmael, and Sarah became a sorrowful woman thereafter. However, it is through the abundant grace of God that an incredible history of redemption unfolds through Abraham's descendants.

Jacob's household had even more problems. Jacob had four wives, and he had twelve sons born among them. Joseph’s brothers, out of jealousy, threw Joseph into a pit. They sold him for twenty shekels of silver. They committed the wicked sin of selling their own brother. However, the abundant grace of God was present with Joseph. Joseph received blessings and eventually became the savior of many lives. God's grace transformed evil into good (Genesis 50:20). It was the overpowering grace of God that turned evil into good.

David's household had even more problems than Jacob's. David committed adultery and murder. Absalom killed his own brothers and orchestrated a rebellion that drove his father from the throne. It was truly a troubled household. However, the abundant grace of God brought forth Jesus among David's descendants.

Peter denied Jesus three times. When Jesus was crucified, all his disciples abandoned him and fled (Matthew 26:56). Paul was once known as a blasphemer, persecutor, and violent man (1 Timothy 1:13). He was involved in the killing of Stephen. However, God's grace was present with Peter, the disciples of Jesus, and Paul. God's grace is given freely (Ephesians 1:6). God’s grace is abundant (Ephesians 1:7, 2:7; 1 Timothy 1:14). God’s grace is great (Psalm 145:7). God’s grace is overflowing (2 Corinthians 9:8). It is grace that we should long for and rely on. We cannot live without grace.

God's grace saves us. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). God's grace is a merciful grace (Ephesians 2:4; Romans 9:15). When God shows us mercy, amazing things unfold. Every miraculous event recorded in the Bible begins with God's mercy.

God's grace is the grace of forgiveness. God's forgiving grace is a greater power than our sins. God's forgiveness covers our sins and cleanses us with the blood of Jesus. He does not remember our sins (Hebrews 10:17). He has taken away all our sins on the cross (Colossians 2:14).

God's grace is the grace of restoration. It is the grace that restores us from loss, illness, and conflict. Jesus died on the cross to reconcile us with God, whom we were once enemies with. Through the grace of Jesus, we have been restored in our relationship with God. God's grace is the grace of new beginnings. He seeks out Peter, who denied Jesus three times, and restores the relationship with him. And He bestows upon him the grace to start anew.

God's grace is the grace that appoints us, imperfect as we are, as workers for Christ. Through God's grace, we have become workers for God (2 Corinthians 6:4), workers for the church (Colossians 1:25), and workers for the gospel (Colossians 1:23). Every day, we need to approach the throne of grace to seek God's grace (Hebrews 4:16). God's abundant grace overpowers problems. Only grace can turn problems into miracles. Only grace can transform problems into blessings. Only grace can help us endure and turn problems into precious jewels. When grace runs dry, everything becomes difficult. But when God's abundant grace is present, everything becomes abundant. May God's abundant grace always be with you.
