[목회서신] 배우는 즐거움 | The Joy of Learning

배움은 즐거움을 낳습니다. 인생 여정에서 우리가 경험할 수 있는 즐거움은 다양합니다. 인간을 움직이는 힘은 두 가지로 압축됩니다. 고통과 즐거움입니다. 우리는 가능한 고통을 피하길 원합니다. 고통이 모두 나쁜 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 고통은 우리에게 유익합니다. 하지만 우리는 고통보다 즐거움을 늘 갈망합니다. 즐거움 중에는 우리에게 유익한 즐거움이 있고, 해로운 즐거움이 있습니다. 해로운 즐거움은 죄의 쾌락입니다. 죄의 쾌락은 우리 인생을 망가뜨리고, 우리 안에 있는 잠재력을 소멸시킵니다. 죄의 쾌락은 잠시입니다(히 11:25). 그 후에는 공허함, 후회, 죄책감, 정죄감, 그리고 수치심이 따라옵니다. 잠시 맛본 쾌락 때문에 가정이 깨어질 수 있습니다. 자신이 쌓아온 성공의 탑이 한 순간에 무너질 수 있습니다. 죄는 순간의 쾌락을 약속하지만 그 다음에는 쾌락을 맛 본 자를 노예로 삼습니다. 죄는 정말 무서운 파괴력을 지녔습니다.

하나님은 우리가 해로운 즐거움이 아닌 유익한 즐거움을 누리길 원하십니다. 인생의 비극은 유익한 즐거움이 아닌 해로운 즐거움에 초점을 맞추는 데 있습니다. 첫 번째 아담은 생명나무가 주는 즐거움 대신 선악과가 주는 해로운 즐거움에 집착했습니다. 그 결과는 비극이었습니다. 반면에 마지막 아담이신 예수님은 여호와를 경외함으로 즐거움을 삼으셨습니다(사 11:3). 하나님의 뜻을 이루시는 것으로 즐거움을 삼으셨습니다(시 40:8). 영혼을 구원하고, 제자를 키우고 남기는 것을 즐거움으로 삼으셨습니다.

하나님이 우리에게 허락하신 즐거움 중에 배움의 즐거움이 있습니다. 배움의 즐거움은 모르는 것을 아는 즐거움입니다. 인간은 이전에 몰랐던 것을 알 때 기쁨을 경험하게 됩니다. 모르는 것을 아는 즐거움은 성장의 즐거움입니다. 우리 인간은 자신이 성장할 때 큰 기쁨을 경험하게 됩니다. 그런 까닭에 우리는 지속적으로 성장을 추구합니다. 몰랐던 것을 배우는 것은 새로운 경험입니다. 새 경험이 새 각성을 일으킵니다. 새 경험이 새 자극을 줍니다. 새 자극은 우리를 더욱 배움의 길로 인도해 줍니다.

배움의 즐거움은 자신이 꼭 알았어야 하는 것을 모르고 있었다는 것을 깨닫는 것입니다. 우리의 문제는 자신이 무엇을 모르는지를 모르는 것입니다. 제가 책을 읽는 이유 중의 하나는 제가 무엇을 모르고 있는지를 발견하기 위해서입니다. 책을 읽으면 책은 제가 마땅히 알아야 하는 데 모르고 있는 것을 보여 줍니다. 그 순간 큰 기쁨을 경험합니다. 그 기쁨은 발견의 기쁨입니다. 제가 마땅히 알아야 할 것을 알게 된 기쁨입니다. 제가 처음 목회를 시작 할 때 제가 무엇을 모르는지를 몰랐습니다. 마땅히 알아야 할 것을 몰랐기에 실패를 경험했습니다. 마땅히 알아야 할 것을 조금 더 일찍 알았다면 실패를 줄일 수 있었을 것입니다.

배움의 즐거움은 자신이 희미하게 아는 것을 확실히 아는 것입니다. 우리가 무엇인가를 알아도 확실히 알지 못하면 답답합니다. 희미하게 알면 왠지 자신이 없습니다. 자신감은 확신에서 옵니다. 자신이 알고 있는 것을 확실히 알게 되면 우리는 확신에 찬 삶을 살게 됩니다. 우리가 확실히 알게 되면 자신의 언어와 문장으로 그것을 표현하게 됩니다. 또한 구체적으로 설명할 수 있게 됩니다. 자신이 확실하게 알고 있는 것을 설명하고 표현하는 기쁨은 큰 기쁨입니다.

배움의 즐거움은 배운 것을 나누는 즐거움입니다. 배움은 좋은 것입니다. 좋은 지식, 좋은 지혜, 좋은 원리, 그리고 좋은 비법(秘法)은 모두 좋은 배움에 속한 것입니다. 좋은 것을 혼자만 알고 있는 것은 좋지 않습니다. 좋은 것을 소유하는 것은 기쁨입니다. 하지만 좋은 것을 나누는 기쁨은 더 큰 기쁨입니다. 인간은 나눔을 통해 더 큰 기쁨을 누리도록 만들어졌습니다. 배움의 목표는 나눔에 있습니다. 나눈다는 것은 배운 것을 표현하는 것이며 가르치는 것입니다. 나눈다는 것은 배운 것을 전수하는 것입니다.

우리가 배운 것을 표현할 수 없다면 진정으로 배운 것이 아닙니다. 참 배움은 자신이 배운 것을 자신의 언어로 표현할 수 있을 때 완성됩니다. 놀라운 사실은 우리가 배운 것을 나눌 때 배운 것을 더욱 확실히 깨닫게 된다는 것입니다. 배운 것을 나눌 때 배운 지식을 체계화할 수 있습니다. 배운 것을 체계화할 때 우리의 삶은 견고해집니다. 흔들리지 않게 됩니다. 우리가 예수님의 제자가 될 뿐만 아니라 충성된 사람을 그리스도의 제자로 양육을 해야 하는 이유가 여기에 있습니다(딤후 2:2). 우리가 누군가를 제자로 양육할 때 양육 받는 사람보다 양육하는 사람이 더욱 성장하게 됩니다. 그 이유는 가르침을 통해 두 번 배우기 때문입니다.

배움을 소중하게 여기는 사람을 가까이 하십시오. 배움의 공동체에 속해 있다는 것을 감사하십시오. 우리 안에 있는 가능성과 잠재력을 여는 열쇠는 배움입니다. 배움을 통해 더욱 성장하시길 바랍니다. 배운 것을 나눔으로 더욱 보람 있는 삶을 사시길 바랍니다.

The Joy of Learning

Learning brings joy. There are many kinds of joy we can experience on our life's journey. The force that moves humans is reduced into two things. These are pain and pleasure. We want to avoid suffering as much as possible. But not all pain is bad. Some pain is good for us. But we always long for pleasure over pain. Among the pleasures of life, there are pleasures that are beneficial to us, and there are pleasures that are harmful. Harmful pleasures are the pleasures of sin. The pleasures of sin ruin our lives and destroy the potential within us. The pleasures of sin are temporary (Hebrews 11:25). Then comes emptiness, regret, guilt, condemnation, and shame. Families can be broken by momentary pleasures. The tower of success you have built can collapse in an instant. Sin promises momentary pleasure, but then enslaves those who have tasted it. Sin has a truly terrifying destructive power.

God wants us to enjoy beneficial pleasures, not harmful ones. The tragedy of life lies in focusing on the harmful pleasures rather than the beneficial ones. The first Adam was obsessed with the harmful pleasure of the fruit of the tree of knowledge instead of the joys of the tree of life. The result was tragic. On the other hand, Jesus, the last Adam, took pleasure in the fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:3). He took pleasure in doing the will of God (Psalm 40:8). He took pleasure in saving souls, making disciples and leaving them behind.

One of the joys God has given us is the joy of learning. The joy of learning is the joy of knowing what you do not know. Humans experience joy when they learn something they did not know before. The joy of knowing what you did not know is the joy of growing. We humans experience great joy when we grow. That is why we are constantly seeking growth. Learning what we didn't know before is a new experience. New experiences give rise to new awakenings. New experiences give us new stimulation. New stimuli lead us on the path of further learning.

The joy of learning is realizing that you didn't know what you should have known. Our problem is that we don't know what we don't know. One of the reasons I read books is to discover what I don't know. When I read a book, it shows me that I didn’t know what I should have known. I experience great joy in that moment. That joy is the joy of discovery. It's a joy to know what I ought to know. When I first started pastoring, I didn't know what I didn't know. I experienced failure because I didn't know what I ought to know. Failure could have been reduced if I had known what I ought to know sooner.

The joy of learning is knowing for sure what you didn’t know clearly. Even if we know something, it's frustrating if we don't know for sure. If you know it unclearly, you are not confident for some reason. Confidence comes from assurance. When we know for sure what we know, we live a life of conviction. When we know for sure, we can express it in our own language and sentences. We will also be able to be explain in detail. The joy of explaining and expressing what we know for sure is great joy.

The joy of learning is also the joy of sharing what you learn. Learning is a good thing. Good knowledge, good wisdom, good principles, and good secrets are all part of good learning. It is not good to be alone in knowing good things. Owning something good is a joy. But the joy of sharing good things is a greater joy. Humans were created to enjoy greater joy through sharing. The goal of learning is to share. Sharing is expressing and teaching what has been learned. Sharing is passing on what you learned.

If we cannot express what we have learned, we have not truly learned it. True learning is complete when we can express what we have learned in our own language. The amazing thing is that when we share what we learn, we understand what we have learned more clearly. When we share what we learn, we can systemize what we have learned. When we systemize what we learned, our lives become solid. It will not be shaken. This is the reason why we should not only become disciples of Jesus, but also nurture faithful people as disciples of Christ (2 Timothy 2:2). When we disciple someone, the nurturer grows more than the one being nurtured. The reason is that we learn twice by teaching.

Draw near to people who value learning. Be grateful to be part of a learning community. Learning is the key to unlocking the possibilities and potential within us. I hope you will grow further through learning. I hope that you will live a more rewarding life by sharing what you have learned.
