[목회서신] 부활의 기쁨 | The Joy of Resurrection

십자가는 고난의 나무입니다. 슬픔의 나무입니다. 십자가 나무의 끝자락에 부활의 열매가 맺혔습니다. 부활은 영광입니다. 부활은 기쁨입니다. 반면에 십자가는 건너고 싶지 않은 강입니다. 오르고 싶지 않은 험한 산입니다. 마시고 싶지 않은 쓴 잔입니다. 예수님도 십자가의 고난을 피하고 싶어 겟세마네 동산에서 “내 아버지여 만일 할 만하시거든 이 잔을 내게서 지나가게 하옵소서”(마 26:39)라고 기도하셨습니다. 예수님은 땀방울이 핏방울이 되도록 간절히 기도하신 후에 고난의 쓴 잔을 마시기 위해 십자가를 향해 나아가셨습니다(눅 22:44). 우리는 십자가의 고난과 부활의 기쁨이 교차하는 선상에서 살고 있습니다. 십자가는 우리가 직면하는 고난의 현실입니다. 우리는 고난의 강을 건너고 역경의 산을 넘으면서 성숙합니다. 고통의 쓴 잔을 마시면서 깊어집니다.

예수님은 십자가가 끝이 아니며 새로운 시작임을 아셨습니다. 십자가를 통해 부활의 영광이 임하는 것을 아셨습니다. 예수님은 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위해 십자가를 참으셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가의 고통 중에 기쁨을 선택하셨습니다. 앞에 있는 기쁨을 바라보셨습니다. 제가 안식월 동안에 자주 묵상한 말씀이 시편 4편 7절 말씀입니다. “주께서 내 마음에 두신 기쁨은 그들의 곡식과 새 포도주가 풍성할 때보다 더하니이다”(시 4:7). 저는 어느 순간에 기쁨이 사라지는 아픔을 겪었습니다. 그 힘든 순간에 하나님이 제게 주신 말씀이 시편 4편 7절의 말씀이었습니다.

이 말씀을 작은 노트에 적어 침대 옆에 두고 묵상하고 또 묵상했습니다. 이 말씀 속에 담긴 기쁨을 묵상했습니다. 기쁨을 상실할 때 기쁨을 선택하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 항상 기뻐하고 싶지만, 기뻐할 수 없을 때 기쁨을 선택하는 것은 힘든 일입니다. 그때 주님께서 제 마음에 말씀을 통해 기쁨을 품게 하셨습니다. 주님이 주신 기쁨은 세상이 주는 기쁨과 달랐습니다. 주님이 제 마음에 주신 기쁨은 위에서 임한 기쁨입니다. 성령님이 주시는 기쁨입니다(갈 5:22). 성령님은 십자가의 고통 중에 있는 예수님께, 앞에 있는 기쁨을 바라보게 하셨습니다(히 12:2). 그 기쁨은 부활의 기쁨입니다. 예수님이 바라보시고 경험하신 부활의 기쁨은 어떤 기쁨이었을까요?

첫째, 부활의 기쁨은 회복의 기쁨입니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 엄청난 고통과 상처를 받으셨습니다. 모욕과 희롱과 수치를 받으셨습니다. 하지만 부활을 통해 예수님의 모든 상처가 치유되었습니다. 예수님이 상실하셨던 모든 것이 회복되었습니다. 인간은 자신이 이미 소유한 것에 대해서는 감격이나 기쁨을 잘 누리지 못합니다. 하지만 소유한 것을 상실한 후에 다시 회복했을 때 놀라운 기쁨을 누리게 됩니다. 건강을 잠시 잃었다가 다시 회복했을 때 큰 기쁨을 누리게 됩니다.

둘째, 부활의 기쁨은 부활의 첫 열매가 되는 기쁨입니다. 성경에는 죽은 사람이 다시 살아나는 기적들이 나옵니다. 하지만 그것은 죽은 자가 소생한 것이지 부활은 아닙니다. 죽었다가 소생한 사람들은 또다시 죽었습니다. 하지만 예수님의 부활은 십자가에 죽으시고 부활하셔서 영원히 사신 것입니다. 예수님은 부활의 첫 열매가 되셨습니다(고전 15:20). 더욱 놀라운 사실이 있습니다. 그것은 예수님을 믿는 자는 누구나 예수님의 뒤를 이어 부활하게 된다는 것입니다. 첫 열매는 앞으로 맺게 될 수많은 열매들의 시작을 의미합니다. 예수님은 자신만 부활하신 것이 아니라 그를 믿는 모든 사람들을 부활에 이르게 하신 것입니다.

셋째, 부활의 기쁨은 승리의 기쁨입니다. 예수님은 십자가를 통해 죄를 멸하셨습니다. 사망을 사망시키셨습니다. 바울은 예수님의 부활을 증거하는 중에 “우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 우리에게 승리를 주시는 하나님께 감사하노니”(고전 15:57)라고 외쳤습니다. 예수님은 사망 권세를 물리치고 승리하셨습니다. 또한 죄와 사망 권세를 가지고 역사했던 마귀의 머리를 치심으로 승리하셨습니다. 부활의 날, 예수님은 축복으로 저주를 삼켜 버리셨습니다. 부활의 능력으로 심판을 녹여버리셨습니다. 사랑으로 미움을 물리치셨습니다. 선으로 악을 이기셨습니다.

넷째, 부활의 기쁨은 하나님의 약속이 성취되는 기쁨입니다. 부활은 하나님의 언약의 성취입니다. 신뢰할 수 있는 분에게 특별한 약속을 받는 것은 큰 기쁨입니다. 또한 나중에 약속한 것이 이루어지는 것을 경험하는 것은 더 큰 기쁨입니다. 저는 1981년 가을에 아내와 약혼을 한 후에 1982년 3월 1일에 결혼식을 올렸습니다. 약혼의 기쁨은 결혼을 약속하는 기쁨입니다. 아직 결혼식을 올리지 않았지만 결혼할 것을 확신하며 기뻐하는 것이 약혼의 기쁨입니다. 그 기쁨은 결혼식을 올리면서 더욱 충만해졌습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 십자가에 죽으시고 부활하실 것을 약속하셨습니다. 하지만 제자들은 부활의 약속을 믿을 수가 없었습니다. 그런 까닭에 부활의 약속이 주는 기쁨을 누리지 못했습니다. 나중에야 부활의 약속이 성취된 것을 보고 비로소 기뻐할 수 있었습니다. 하나님의 약속을 믿으십시오. 예수님을 믿는 사람은 어떤 고난을 통과해도 반드시 부활에 이르게 됩니다. 부활절에 부활의 기쁨이 충만하시길 빕니다.

The Joy of Resurrection

The cross is the tree of suffering. It is the tree of sorrow. The fruit of resurrection was borne at the end of the tree of the cross. The resurrection is glorious. The resurrection is joyous. On the other hand, the cross is a river you don't want to cross. It is a steep mountain that you don't want to climb. It's a bitter cup that you don't want to drink. Jesus also prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane to avoid the suffering of the cross, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me” (Matthew 26:39). After Jesus prayed earnestly, so much that his sweat was like drops of blood, he went to the cross to drink the bitter cup of suffering (Luke 22:44). We live on the line where the suffering of the cross and the joy of resurrection intersect. The cross is the reality of suffering we face. We become mature as we cross the river of hardship and the mountains of adversity. We are deepened as we drink the bitter cup of pain.

Jesus knew that the cross was not the end, but a new beginning. He knew that the glory of resurrection comes through the cross. Jesus endured the cross for the joy ahead. Jesus chose joy in the midst of the sufferings of the cross. He looked at the joy ahead. I often meditated on Psalm 4:7 during my Sabbatical month. “You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound” (Psalm 4:7). At some point, I experienced pain that faded my joy. In that difficult moment, God gave me the verse Psalm 4:7.

I wrote this verse in a small notebook and put it next to my bed to meditate on it repeatedly. I meditated on the joy contained in this verse. Choosing joy when you lose is not an easy task. You always want to rejoice, but choosing joy when you can't rejoice is hard. In that moment, the Lord gave me joy through the Word. The joy that the Lord gave was different from the joy the world gave. The joy the Lord has given to my heart is the joy that comes from above. It is the joy that the Holy Spirit gives (Galatians 5:22). The Holy Spirit enabled Jesus who was in pain on the cross to look towards the joy ahead (Hebrews 12:2). That joy is the joy of resurrection. What kind of joy was the resurrection that Jesus looked at and experienced?

First, the joy of the resurrection is the joy of restoration. Jesus suffered tremendous pain and wounds on the cross. He faced insults, harassment, and shame. However, through the resurrection, all of Jesus' wounds were healed. Everything Jesus had lost was restored. People are not usually happy with what he already possesses. But when we are restored after losing what we possess, we enjoy incredible joy. When we lose health for a while and then recover again, we enjoy great joy.

Second, the joy of the resurrection is the joy of being the first fruits of the resurrection. There are miracles in the Bible in which the dead are brought back to life. However, it is not a resurrection of dead coming back to life. Those who once died and are revived will die again. However, Jesus died on the cross, rose again, and lives forever in his resurrection. Jesus became the first fruit of the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:20). There are even more wonderful facts. It is that anyone who believes in Jesus will be resurrected after Jesus. The first fruit signifies the beginning of countless fruits that will be borne in the future. Jesus did not only resurrect himself, but brought all those who believed in him to resurrection.

Third, the joy of resurrection is the joy of victory. Jesus destroyed sin through the cross. He killed death. While witnessing the resurrection of Jesus, Paul cried out, "thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57). Jesus defeated the power of death and triumphed. He also triumphed by striking the head of the devil, who worked with the power of sin and death. On the day of resurrection, Jesus swallowed up the curse with a blessing. He melted judgment with the power of resurrection. He defeated hatred with love. He overcame evil with good.

Fourth, the joy of the resurrection is the joy of fulfilling God's promises. The resurrection is the fulfillment of God's covenant. It is a great pleasure to receive a special promise from someone you trust. And it is even more joy to experience what has promised being fulfilled later. After I was engaged in the fall of 1981, I married my wife on March 1, 1982. The joy of being engaged is the joy of a promised marriage. The wedding has not yet been held, but it is the joy of being engaged to rejoice with confidence that you will be married. The joy became even more fulfilling with the wedding ceremony. Jesus promised his disciples to die on the cross and be resurrected. However, the disciples could not believe the promise of resurrection. For that reason, they did not enjoy the joy of the promise of resurrection. Only later could they rejoice to see the promise of resurrection fulfilled. Believe in God's promises. Those who believe in Jesus will surely reach the resurrection no matter what suffering they pass. May Easter be filled with the joy of resurrection.
