[목회서신] 숲 밖을 나오니 숲이 보입니다! | I Can See the Forest, Now That I am Out of the Forest!

숲 안에 있으면 숲을 보지 못합니다. 숲을 보려면 숲 밖을 나와야 합니다. 숲 밖을 나오니 숲이 보입니다. 한국에 나오니 미국이 보입니다. 조국교회에 나오니 이민교회가 보이고 제가 섬기는 새생명비전교회가 보입니다. 여행은 눈뜸입니다. 저는 눈뜸을 좋아합니다. 눈을 뜨지 못하면 보지 못합니다. 깨닫지 못합니다. 돌이킬 수 없습니다. 눈뜸은 하나님의 은혜입니다. 하나님이 도와주시지 않으면 눈을 뜰 수 없습니다. 사단은 우리 눈을 어둡게 만듭니다(고후 4:4). 그래서 복음의 영광을 보지 못하게 만듭니다. 언제 그리고 어떻게 눈뜸의 은혜를 경험할 수 있을까요? 여행을 통해서입니다. 전도와 선교를 통해서입니다. 좋은 만남과 독서를 통해서입니다. 특별히 성경을 읽을 때 성령님께서 눈을 열어 주십니다.

예수님이 부활하신 후에 엠마오로 가는 두 제자를 만나서 그들에게 성경을 풀어 주셨습니다. 그때 그들의 눈이 열렸습니다. 그들의 마음이 뜨거워졌습니다. 그 순간 부활하신 주님을 알게 됩니다. 그들의 영의 눈이 열리지 않았을 때 그들과 동행하는 분이 주님이신 줄 몰랐습니다. 하지만 하나님이 그들의 눈을 열어 주실 때 눈이 열려 성경을 깨닫게 되고, 그들과 동행하신 분이 예수님이신 것을 알게 됩니다. 눈뜸이 축복입니다.

모국에 와서 사도행전을 읽고 묵상하는 중에 눈뜸이라는 단어가 울림으로 다가왔습니다. 눈뜸이란 단어가 예수님께서 다메섹 도상에서 바울을 만나셨을 때 하신 말씀에 등장합니다. “이스라엘과 이방인들에게서 내가 너를 구원하여 그들에게 보내어 그 눈을 뜨게 하여 어둠에서 빛으로, 사탄의 권세에서 하나님께로 돌아오게 하고 죄 사함과 나를 믿어 거룩하게 된 무리 가운데서 기업을 얻게 하리라 하더이다”(행 26:17-18). 특별히 이 말씀을 읽는 중에 “그 눈을 뜨게 하여”라는 말씀이 제 눈에 크게 들어왔습니다.

예수님께서 바울에게 복음을 전함으로 사람들의 눈을 뜨게 하라고 말씀합니다. 사람들이 눈을 뜨게 되면 어둠에서 빛으로, 사탄의 권세에서 하나님께 돌아오게 됩니다. 죄 사함을 받고 예수님을 믿어 거룩하게 된 무리 가운데서 기업을 얻게 됩니다. 눈뜸이 축복입니다. 눈뜸은 깨달음입니다. 눈뜸은 열림입니다. 눈을 뜨면 새로운 세계가 열립니다. 눈뜸은 회개입니다. 눈을 뜰 때 잘못된 방향에서 돌이키게 됩니다. 눈뜸은 변화입니다. 변화는 성장과 성숙을 의미합니다. 눈뜸은 새로운 차원으로 들어가는 경험입니다. 눈뜸은 새로운 축복 속으로 들어가는 문입니다. 제가 모국에 와서 말씀을 전할 때마다 하나님이 성도들의 눈을 뜨게 해 주시길 기도하고 있습니다.

모국에 와서 환대에 대해 다시 눈을 뜨고 있습니다. 제가 머무는 곳은 신길교회가 제공해 준 게스트룸입니다. 신길교회 이기용 목사님과 사모님의 열렬한 환대를 받으며 안식하고 있습니다. 모국에 나오면 나그네가 됩니다. 나그네에게 먹을 것과 마실 것과 잠잘 곳을 제공해 주는 것은 큰 사랑입니다. 저는 수줍은 사람입니다. 그래서 적극적으로 환대하지 않으면 움츠리게 됩니다. 적극적인 환대 속에는 나그네를 편안하게 쉬도록 도와주는 환대가 있습니다. 부담 없이 편안하게 쉬도록 도와주는 환대는 최상의 환대입니다. 저를 아껴주시는 분들을 통해 그런 환대의 축복을 누리고 있습니다.

모국에 와서 배움에 대해 다시 눈을 뜨고 있습니다. 저는 배움을 좋아합니다. 인생은 배움이라고 생각합니다. 모든 사건과 모든 만남을 배움의 기회로 여기며 살고 있습니다. 모국에 오니 정말 배울 것이 많습니다. 6년 전과는 비교할 수 없을 만큼 새로운 시스템이 갖추어져 있습니다. 특별히 배달 문화는 세계 최고입니다. 배달의 민족이라는 말을 실감합니다. 무엇이든 주문하면 아주 빠른 시간에 배달이 됩니다.

모국에 와서 사람을 키우고 남기는 것의 중요성에 다시 눈을 뜨고 있습니다. 부족하지만 제가 섬겼던 목회자들이 한국에서 아주 탁월한 사역을 하고 있습니다. 저와 오랜 세월 동안 우정을 나눈 전병철 교수님은 아신대학교에서 탁월한 교수로 사역하고 있습니다. 특별히 아크연구소(ARCC-Align Research Center for Christianity)를 통해 한국 교회의 시대적 변화를 읽어내고 대처하는 일에 앞장서고 있습니다.

성도님들이 그리워하는 오운철선교사님과 사모님을 모국에 도착해서 바로 만났습니다. 두 분이 케냐로 떠나기 전에 다시 한번 친밀한 교제를 나누었습니다. 제가 목회서신을 쓰는 이 시간에 두 분이 케냐에 잘 도착했다는 연락을 받았습니다. 오선교사님과 사모님을 위해 계속 중보해 주시길 부탁드립니다. 저희 부부는 성도님들의 중보기도 덕분에 잘 지내고 있습니다. 안식월을 갖도록 허락해 주신 교회와 장로님들께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 제가 모국에서 안식하는 동안 고난주간 특새와 부활절 음악예배 그리고 어린이 부활절 잔치가 진행되는 것을 알고 기도드립니다. 성심을 다해 말씀을 전해주시는 동역자들과 아낌없는 섬김으로 헌신해 주시는 성도님들에게 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 부활의 주님이 함께하십니다. 모국은 아름답습니다.

I Can See the Forest, Now That I am Out of the Forest!

If you are in the forest, you cannot see the forest. You have to get out of the forest to see the forest. When you come out of the forest, you can see the forest. When I came to Korea, I saw the United States. When I came to the church of our homeland, I was able to see the immigrant church - and New Life Vision Church, that I serve. Travel is eye-opening. I like having eye-opening experiences. If you can't open your eyes, you can't see. You can’t understand. You can’t turn back. Eye-openings are God's grace. We cannot open our eyes without God's help. Satan blinds our eyes (2 Corinthians 4:4). So he makes us blind to the glory of the gospel. When and how can we experience the grace of having an eye-opening experience? We can experience it through travel. It is through evangelism and missions. It is through good encounters and reading. Especially when we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit opens our eyes.

After Jesus rose again, he met two disciples on the road to Emmaus and opened the Bible to them. Then their eyes were opened. Their hearts were burning. At that moment, they came to know the risen Lord. When their spiritual eyes were not opened, they did not know that the Lord was accompanying them. But when God opened their eyes, they understood the Bible and came to know that Jesus was accompanying them. An eye-opening is a blessing.

While I was reading and meditating on the book of Acts after coming to the motherland, the word ‘eye-opening’ resonated with me. The word eye-opening appears in what Jesus said when he met Paul on the road to Damascus. “I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me” (Acts 26:17–18).In particular, while reading these verses, the words “open their eyes” caught my eye.

Jesus tells Paul to open people's eyes by preaching the gospel. When people open their eyes, they will return from darkness to light, from Satan's domain to God. They will receive the forgiveness of their sins and gain an inheritance among the people who have been sanctified by believing in Jesus. Eye-opening is a blessing. Eye-opening is enlightenment. Eye-opening is opening. When you open your eyes, a new world opens up. Eye-opening is repentance. When you open your eyes, you turn from the wrong direction. Eye-opening is change. Change means growth and maturity. Eye-opening is the experience of entering a new dimension. Eye-opening is the door to a new blessing. Every time I come to the motherland and preach the Word, I pray that God will open the eyes of the saints.

I am reopening my eyes to hospitality in the motherland. The place I am staying at is a guest room provided by Singil Church. I am resting with the enthusiastic hospitality of Pastor Lee Ki-yong of Singil Church and his wife. When I return to the motherland, I become a stranger. It is great love to provide a stranger with food, drink, and a place to sleep. I am a shy person. So if I am not actively welcomed, I become withdrawn. In active hospitality, there is hospitality that helps travelers to rest comfortably. Hospitality that helps you relax without burden is the best hospitality. I am enjoying the blessings of such hospitality through those who care for me.

I am reopening my eyes to learning in the motherland. I like learning. I think life is learning. I view every incident and encounter as an opportunity to learn. There is a lot to learn in the motherland. The new system is incomparable to what it was six years ago. In particular, the delivery culture is the best in the world. I realize that it is a nation of delivery. Anything you order will be delivered very quickly.

I am reopening my eyes to the importance of nurturing and appointing people in the motherland. The pastors I served are doing a very outstanding ministry in Korea. Professor Jeon Byeong-cheol, who has been friends with me for many years, is serving as an outstanding professor at Acts University. He is especially at the forefront of reading and responding to the changes of the times in the Korean church through the ARCC-Align Research Center for Christianity.

I met Missionary Oh Un-cheol and his wife, whom you miss, right after arriving in the motherland. We shared another intimate fellowship again before they left for Kenya. I received a message that the two had arrived safely in Kenya while writing this pastoral letter. Please continue to intercede for Missionary Oh and his wife. My wife and I are doing well thanks to your intercession. I sincerely thank the church and the elders for allowing me to have a sabbatical. While I am resting in the motherland, I pray for the Passion Week Special Daybreak Service, Easter Music Service, and Children's Celebration for Easter. I am deeply grateful to the co-workers who preach the Word with all their heart and to the saints who devote themselves to lavish service. The Lord of resurrection is with you. Motherland is beautiful.
