[목회서신] 어떻게 칭찬받는 일꾼이 될 수 있을까요! | How Can I Be a Praiseworthy Worker!

저의 소원 중의 하나는 예수님께 칭찬받는 일꾼이 되는 것입니다. 초대 교회에 문제가 생겼을 때 성령과 지혜가 충만하고 칭찬받는 일꾼을 세움으로 문제를 해결했습니다. “너희 가운데서 성령과 지혜가 충만하여 칭찬 받는 사람 일곱을 택하라”(행 6:3). 사도 바울의 영의 아들 디모데도 형제들에게 칭찬을 받는 사람이었습니다. “디모데는 루스드라와 이고니온에 있는 형제들에게 칭찬 받는 자니”(행 16:2).

바울은 자신을 “하나님의 일꾼”(고후 6:4), “그리스도 예수의 일꾼”(롬 15:16), “복음의 일꾼”(골 1:23), 그리고 “교회의 일꾼”(골 1:25)이라고 말합니다. 우리는 하나님의 자녀이면서 또한 그리스도의 일꾼으로 부름을 받았습니다. 일꾼에게는 일이 주어집니다. 일이란 완수해야 할 과업을 의미합니다. 하나님이 일꾼에게 일을 맡기실 때 그의 재능과 은사를 따라 맡기십니다. 또한 인생의 계절에 따라 하나님이 맡기신 일이 다를 수 있습니다. 느헤미야는 술 맡은 관원, 예루살렘 성벽 건축자, 그리고 예루살렘의 총독의 역할을 담당했습니다.

예수님은 하나님 아버지께서 맡기신 일을 이루어 하나님을 영화롭게 하셨습니다. “아버지께서 내게 하라고 주신 일을 내가 이루어 아버지를 이 세상에서 영화롭게 하였사오니”(요 17:4). 저는 한때 성품을 강조하고 일의 중요성을 간과한 적이 있습니다. 왜냐하면 성품 없이 일만 열심히 하는 사람들에게 받은 상처 때문이었습니다. 하지만 성경을 깊이 연구하는 중에 성품과 함께 하나님이 맡기신 일을 이루는 것도 중요하다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그래서 저는 하나님께 칭찬받는 일꾼이 되고 싶은 갈망을 마음에 품게 되었습니다. 어떻게 하나님께 칭찬받는 일꾼이 될 수 있을까요?

첫째, 착한 태도를 갖고 일할 때 칭찬을 받습니다. 예수님께서 달란트 비유에서 다섯 달란트와 두 달란트를 남긴 종들에게 “착하고 충성된 종”(마 25:23)이라고 칭찬하십니다. 일꾼은 착해야 합니다. 무엇보다 태도가 좋아야 합니다. 마음은 드러나지 않지만 태도는 드러납니다. 태도는 몸의 자세와 같습니다. 올바른 자세가 몸을 건강하게 유지하듯이 좋은 태도가 좋은 결과를 낳습니다. 일꾼은 먼저 보이지 않는 마음의 정원을 잘 가꾸어 착한 태도를 갖도록 자신을 훈련해야 합니다.

둘째, 적은 일에 충성될 때 칭찬을 받습니다. 예수님은 “네가 적은 일에 충성하였다”(마 25:23)라고 칭찬하셨습니다. 예수님은 “지극히 작은 것에 충성된 자는 큰 것에도 충성되고 지극히 작은 것에 불의한 자는 큰 것에도 불의하니라”(눅 16:10)라고 말씀합니다. 적은 일은 잘 보이지 않습니다. 적은 일에 충성했다는 의미는 사람들이 보이지 않은 데서 충성했다는 것을 의미합니다. 은밀하게, 아무도 보지 않은 데서 하나님의 눈길을 의식하며 충성했다는 것을 의미합니다.

셋째, 충성된 일꾼이 칭찬을 받습니다. 요즈음 충성이라는 단어는 잊혀진 단어입니다. 우리는 잊혀진 단어를 다시 회복해야 합니다. 그 이유는 하나님이 소중히 여기시는 것이 충성이기 때문입니다. 충성이란 맡겨진 일을 신실하게 하는 것을 의미합니다. 끈기 있게 하는 것을 의미합니다. 예수님을 믿고 제 마음에 깊이 새겨진 말씀 중에 하나가 있습니다. “네가 죽도록 충성하라 그리하면 내가 생명의 면류관을 네게 주리라”(계 2:10, 개역한글). 예수님은 죽도록 충성하신 분입니다. 한두 번 충성하고, 잠시 충성하는 것은 누구나 할 수 있습니다. 하지만 끝까지 충성하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 충성된 일꾼은 신실한 일꾼입니다. 바울은 그의 동역자들을 칭찬할 때 신실한 일꾼(골 1:7, 4:7; 고전 4:17)이라고 칭찬합니다.

넷째, 풍성한 열매를 맺을 때 칭찬을 받습니다. 연기와 기침과 사랑은 감출 수 없듯이 열매도 감출 수가 없습니다. 열매는 겉으로 드러나게 되어 있습니다. 예수님은 열매를 맺되 많이 맺으라고 말씀합니다. “너희가 열매를 많이 맺으면 내 아버지께서 영광을 받으실 것이요 너희는 내 제자가 되리라”(요 15:8). 열매를 많이 맺는 것은 우리 자신의 힘만으로는 안 됩니다. 늘 예수님 안에 거하기를 힘써야 합니다(요 15:5). 성령 충만을 받아야 합니다(엡 5:18; 갈 5:22-23).

하나님이 일을 맡기시는 이유는 일을 통해 우리를 축복하시기 위해서입니다. 우리는 일을 통해 인격적 성숙을 도모할 수 있습니다. 일을 통해 상을 받습니다. 일을 통해 좋은 만남을 갖게 됩니다. 훌륭한 인물들은 주어진 일에 최선을 다했습니다. 고난과 고통과 갈등과 상처를 견디며 맡겨진 일에 최선을 다했습니다. 그런 과정을 통해 훌륭한 인격을 가꾸었습니다. 칭찬받는 일꾼이 되는 길은, 자기가 좋아하는 일을 먼저 하는 것이 아니라 맡겨진 일을 좋아하는 것으로부터 시작됩니다. 맡겨진 일에 충성하는 것으로부터 시작됩니다(고전 4:2). 여호수아는 40년 동안 모세의 시종으로 일했습니다. 그 후에 그는 이스라엘의 지도자가 되었습니다. 저의 소원 중의 하나는 제가 섬기는 성도님들과 동역자들이 칭찬받는 일꾼이 되는 것입니다.

How Can I Be a Praiseworthy Worker!

One of my desires is to become a worker praised by Jesus. When a problem arose in the early church, the problem was solved by raising up praised workers who were full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. “Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them” (Acts 6:3). Timothy, the spiritual son of the Apostle Paul, was also a man praised by the brothers of the church. “The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him” (Acts 16:2).

Paul describes himself as “a servant of God” (2 Corinthians 6:4), “a minister of Christ Jesus” (Romans 15:16), a “servant of the gospel” (Colossians 1:23), and a “servant of the church” (Colossians 1:25). We are also called to be servants of Christ as well as God’s children. Workers are given a job. Works are tasks to be completed. When God entrusts a worker with a task, he entrusts it according to his talents and gifts. Also, depending on the season of his life, the work God will entrust may be different. Nehemiah served as a cupbearer, a builder of Jerusalem's walls, and a governor of Jerusalem.

Jesus glorified God by fulfilling the work that the Heavenly Father entrusted to him. “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do” (John 17:4). In the past, I once emphasized character and overlooked the importance of work. It was because of the wounds I received from people who only work hard without good character. However, during my deep study of the Bible, I realized that it is important to fulfill the work God has entrusted to me along with my character. So, I had a longing in my heart to become a worker who was praised by God. How can I become a worker who is praised by God?

First, when you work with a good attitude, you are praised. In the parable of the talents, Jesus praises the servants who left five and two talents as “good and faithful servants” (Matthew 25:23). Workers must be noble. Above all, you must have a good attitude. The heart is not revealed, but the attitude is. Attitude is like body posture. Just as good posture keeps the body healthy, a good attitude produces good results. Workers must first cultivate the invisible garden of the heart and train themselves to have a good attitude.

Second, we are praised when we are faithful with little things. Jesus praised, “You have been faithful with a few things” (Matthew 25:23). Jesus said, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much” (Luke 16:10). Little things can’t be seen well. Being faithful in little things means being faithful behind the scenes. Secretly, it means being conscious of God's eyes and being faithful while no one sees.

Third, faithful workers are praised. Faithfulness is a forgotten word these days. We must recover the forgotten word. The reason is because it is what God values, faithfulness. Faithfulness means doing the work entrusted to you with devotion. It means to have tenacity. There is one verses that is deeply engraved in my heart after believing in Jesus. “Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10). Jesus is the one who was faithful to the point of death. Anyone can be faithful once or twice, and for a while. However, staying faithful to the end is not easy. A faithful worker is a truthful worker. When Paul commends his co-workers, he praises them as faithful workers (Colossians 1:7; 4:7; 1 Corinthians 4:17).

Fourth, we are praised when we bear abundant fruit. Just as you cannot hide smoke, a cough, and love, you cannot hide fruit. The fruit is exposed outwardly. Jesus says to bear fruit and bear much. “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples” (John 15:8). Bearing much fruit is not possible in our own strength. We must always strive to abide in Jesus (John 15:5). We must be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18; Galatians 5:22-23).

The reason God entrusts work to us is to bless us through the work. We can promote personal growth through work. We can receive rewards through work. We will have a good encounter through work. Great people did their best in what they were given. They did their best in the work entrusted to them, enduring hardships, pain, conflicts, and wounds. Through such a process, they cultivated great character. The way to become a praiseworthy worker begins with liking the entrusted task given to you, not doing what you like first. It begins with being faithful to the task entrusted to you (1 Corinthians 4:2). Joshua served as Moses' attendant for 40 years. After that, he became the leader of Israel. One of my wishes is for the saints and co-workers I serve to become praiseworthy workers.
