[목회서신] 왜 지속적으로 성장해야 할까요? | Why Should We Continue to Grow?

하나님은 우리가 예수님의 장성한 분량에 이르도록 성장하기를 원하십니다. “우리가 다 하나님의 아들을 믿는 것과 아는 일에 하나가 되어 온전한 사람을 이루어 그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한 데까지 이르리니”(엡 4:13). “오직 사랑 안에서 참된 것을 하여 범사에 그에게까지 자랄지라 그는 머리니 곧 그리스도라”(엡 4:15). 우리가 범사에 예수님에게까지 성장하는 것은 평생의 과업입니다. 단기간의 성장이 아니라 지속적으로 성장하는 것을 의미합니다.

성경은 복 받은 사람의 모습을 시냇가에 심은 나무로 묘사합니다. “그는 시냇가에 심은 나무가 철을 따라 열매를 맺으며 그 잎사귀가 마르지 아니함 같으니 그가 하는 모든 일이 다 형통하리로다”(시 1:3). “그는 물 가에 심어진 나무가 그 뿌리를 강변에 뻗치고 더위가 올지라도 두려워하지 아니하며 그 잎이 청청하며 가무는 해에도 걱정이 없고 결실이 그치지 아니함 같으리라”(렘 17:8). 이사야는 하나님의 백성을 “의의 나무”라고 말합니다(사 61:3).

하나님은 우리가 시냇가에 심은 나무가 되길 원하십니다. 또한 뿌리 깊은 나무가 되길 원하십니다. 버섯은 몇 시간이면 자랍니다. 호박은 6개월 정도 시간이 필요합니다. 하지만 풍성한 열매를 맺는 나무로 성장하는 데는 오랜 시간이 필요합니다. 뿌리 깊은 나무로 성장한다는 것은 쉽게 흔들리지 않는 사람이 되는 것입니다. 뿌리 깊은 나무는 쉽게 흔들리지 않습니다. 뿌리 깊은 나무는 견고합니다. 땅 깊이 뿌리를 내리고 있기 때문에 가무는 때에도 깊은 뿌리에서 생수를 끌어올리게 됩니다. 그래서 가무는 때에도 걱정이 없습니다.

오래된 나무는 더 깊숙이 아래로 자라는 일을 계속합니다. 높이 자라기 위해서는 먼저 아래로 자라야 합니다. 오래된 나무의 비밀은 오랫동안 서 있었기 때문입니다. 오랫동안 서서 오랜 세월 폭염, 폭풍우, 그리고 겨울의 거센 추위를 견뎌내면서 강하고 거대하게 자랄 수 있었던 것입니다. 오랜 세월을 견딘 나무는 오랫동안 쓰임 받게 됩니다. 견딤이 있을 때 쓰임이 있습니다. 견딤의 길이가 쓰임의 길이를 결정합니다. 나무가 깊이 뿌리를 내릴 때 생수를 만나게 됩니다. 생수는 비가 오면 생겼다가 마르면 사라지는 물이 아닙니다. 땅속 깊숙이 흐르는 생수는 결코 마르는 법이 없습니다. 하나님은 생수의 원천이십니다. 생수의 근원이십니다(렘 17:13). 지혜로운 사람은 거듭 근원으로 돌아가는 사람입니다. 지혜로운 사람은 원천에 머무는 사람입니다.

하나님께 깊이 뿌리를 내린 사람은 지속적으로 생수를 공급받습니다. 생수는 하나님의 말씀입니다(요 15:3; 엡 5:26). 생수는 성령님이십니다(요 7:38-39). 생수는 예수님의 보혈입니다(요 19:34; 요일 5:6). 그리스도인들은 말씀과 성령님과 보혈의 생수를 통해 견고하게 서게 됩니다. 보이는 것을 강조하는 시대에 살고 있지만 정말 중요한 것은 보이지 않는 것입니다. 눈에 보이는 나무보다 중요한 것은 나무의 뿌리입니다. 사람도 마찬가지입니다. 외모를 무시할 수는 없지만 정말 중요한 것은 우리 내면입니다. 영원히 하나님과 함께할 영혼입니다. 우리 속사람입니다. “성령으로 말미암아 너희 속사람을 능력으로 강건하게 하시오며”(엡 3:16). “우리의 겉사람은 낡아지나 우리의 속사람은 날로 새로워지도다”(고후 4:16). 왜 우리가 지속적으로 성장해야 할까요?

첫째, 성장을 통해 더 나은 사람이 될 수 있기 때문입니다. 성장을 통해 우리는 예수님의 성품을 닮은 사람이 됩니다. 우리가 예수님의 성품을 닮아 겸손하고 온유한 사람이 될 때 놀라운 복을 누리게 됩니다. 하나님이 겸손한 사람에게 베푸시는 큰 은혜를 받게 됩니다(약 4:6). 하나님이 온유한 사람에게 베푸시는 축복을 받게 됩니다(마 5:5). 더 나은 사람으로 변화되고 성숙한 사람이 되는 것은 아름다운 일입니다.

둘째, 성장을 통해 미래를 잘 준비할 수 있기 때문입니다. 하나님의 지혜는 미래를 준비하는 데 있습니다. 성장한다는 것은 구비한다는 것을 의미합니다. 고기잡이를 나가는 사람은 고기를 잡는 데 필요한 것을 구비합니다. 전쟁터에 나가는 사람은 전쟁에서 승리하는 데 필요한 것을 구비합니다. 그와 같이 우리가 성장하게 되면 하나님께 쓰임 받는 그릇으로 잘 준비되게 됩니다.

셋째, 성장을 통해 하나님이 예비해 주신 기회를 잘 포착할 수 있기 때문입니다. 기회는 준비된 사람에게 찾아옵니다. 기회는 준비된 사람이 알아봅니다. 기회는 준비된 사람이 포착할 수 있습니다. 기회는 하나님이 주시지만, 준비는 하나님이 대신해 주시지 않으십니다.

넷째, 성장을 통해 축복의 통로가 될 수 있기 때문입니다(창 12:3). 우리는 성장을 통해 선한 영향력의 지경을 넓힐 수가 있습니다. 성장을 통해 열매를 많이 맺음으로 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수가 있습니다(요 15:8). 성장은 하나님의 뜻입니다. 하나님의 기쁨입니다. 지적 성장, 지혜의 성장, 정서적 성장, 인격의 성장, 영적 성장, 관계의 성장, 그리고 기술과 시스템의 성장을 통해 축복의 통로가 되시길 바랍니다.

Why Should We Continue to Grow?

God wants us to grow up to the whole measure of the fullness of Jesus. “Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13). “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ” (Ephesians 4:15). Growing up to be like Jesus in all things is a lifelong task. It means growing continuously, rather than a sprint growth.

The Bible describes a blessed person as a tree planted by streams of water. “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers” (Psalm 1:3). “He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit” (Jeremiah 17:8). Isaiah speaks of God's people as “the tree of righteousness” (Isaiah 61:3).

God wants us to be trees planted by streams of water. He also wants us to be deep-rooted trees. Mushrooms grow in a matter of hours. Pumpkins need about 6 months to grow. However, growing into a tree with abundant fruit takes a long time. To grow into a deep-rooted tree is to become a person who is not easily shaken. A tree with deep roots is not easily shaken. A deep-rooted tree is strong. Since it is deeply rooted in the ground, it draws living water from its deep roots even in times of drought. So, there is no need to worry even in times of drought.

Older trees continue to grow their roots deeper down. In order to grow high, you must first grow downwards. The secret of old trees is that they have been standing for a long time. They have been able to stand for a long time and survive the heat, storms, and bitter cold of winter to grow strong and big. A tree that has endured for a long time will be used for a long time. When there is endurance, you can be used. The length of endurance determines the length of being used. When the tree is deeply rooted, it meets living water. Living water is not water that is created when it rains and disappears when it dries. Living water that flows deep into the ground never dries up. God is the fountain of living water. He is the source of living water (Jeremiah 17:13). A wise person is one who returns to the source again and again. A wise person is one who stays at the fountain.

Those who are deeply rooted in God are continuously supplied with living water. The living water is the word of God (John 15:3; Ephesians 5:26). The living water is the Holy Spirit (John 7:38-39). The living water is the blood of Jesus (John 19:34; 1 John 5:6). Christians stand firm through the Word, the Holy Spirit, and the living water of the blood. We live in an era where the visible is emphasized, but what is really important is the invisible. The root of a tree is more important than the visible tree. The same goes for people. We can't ignore our appearance, but what really matters is what's inside us. It is a soul that will be with God forever. It is our inner person. “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being” (Ephesians 3:16). “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16). Why should we continue to grow?

First, because growing makes us a better person. Through growth, we become those who resemble the character of Jesus. When we resemble the character of Jesus and become humble and meek, we will enjoy amazing blessings. You will receive the great grace that God bestows on the humble (James 4:6). You will receive the blessings that God bestows on those who are meek (Matthew 5:5). It is a beautiful thing to change for the better and become a mature person.

Second, it is because we can prepare well for the future through growth. God's wisdom lies in preparing for the future. To grow means to be equipped. A person who goes out fishing equips himself with everything he needs to catch a fish. Those who go to war equip themselves with what they need to win the war. When we grow with preparations, we will be well prepared to be used by God as His vessels.

Third, it is because we can seize the opportunities God has prepared for us through growth. Opportunities come to those who are prepared. Opportunities are recognized by those who are prepared. Opportunities are seized by those who are prepared. Opportunities are given by God, but the preparations that are required for the opportunities are not completed by God.

Fourth, it is because we can become a channel of blessing through growth (Genesis 12:3). We can enlarge our territory of good influence though growth. By growing and bearing much fruit, you can glorify God (John 15:8). Growth is God's will. It is the joy of God. I hope you become a channel of blessing through intellectual growth, growth in wisdom, emotional growth, personality growth, spiritual growth, relationship growth, and growth in technology and system.
