[목회서신] 자극에 긍정적으로 반응하는 지혜 | Wisdom of Responding Positively to Stimuli

자극(刺戟)은 성장의 촉진제입니다. 자극에는 긍정적인 자극이 있고 부정적인 자극이 있습니다. 긍정적 자극은 우리 성장을 돕는 자극입니다. 우리는 성장할 때 희열을 느낍니다. 또한 우리가 사랑하는 사람들이 성장하는 것을 볼 때 큰 기쁨을 누립니다(요한3서 1:3). 그 이유는 하나님이 우리 안에 성장 본능을 심어주신 까닭입니다. 성장의 기쁨은 큰 기쁨입니다. 하지만 성장은 쉬운 것이 아닙니다. 지속적으로 성장하는 것은 더욱 어렵습니다. 그 이유는, 사람은 성장 보다 안주하는 것을 더 좋아하기 때문입니다. 또한 성장 때문에 치러야 할 대가를 힘들어하기 때문입니다.

성장 때문에 치러야 할 대가가 있다할지라도 성장을 선택하는 것이 지혜입니다. 제가 인생 여정에서 배운 소중한 교훈이 있습니다. 그 교훈은 성장의 고통을 감수하지 않으면 성장하지 못한 고통을 치러야 한다는 것입니다. 성장에는 많은 유익이 따릅니다. 반면에 성장하지 않으면 많은 문제들이 생깁니다. 그런 까닭에 성장을 위한 자극을 받을 때 긍정적으로 반응해야 합니다.

자극이란 단어를 네이버 사전에서는 다음과 같이 정의합니다. “어떠한 작용을 주어 감각이나 마음에 반응이 일어나게 함.” 자극은 반응을 낳습니다. 자극을 받았을 때 반응하지 않는 것도 반응입니다. 우리가 어떤 자극을 받았을 때 어떻게 반응할 것인가를 잘 선택해야 합니다. 스티븐 코비는 “자극과 반응 사이에는 빈 공간이 있다. 그 공간에 우리의 반응을 선택하는 자유와 힘이 있다. 그 반응에 우리의 성장과 행복이 달려 있다.”라고 말합니다. 성장과 행복을 위해 자극에 긍정적으로 반응하는 것이 지혜입니다.

자극이 원인이라면 반응은 결과입니다. 자극은 우리에게 새로운 변화를 촉구합니다. 좋은 자극을 받았을 때 새로운 변화로 반응하십시오. 그때 우리는 지속적으로 좋은 자극을 받게 됩니다. 나이가 들어도 얼마든지 성장할 수 있습니다. 나이가 들어서 성장하는 것은 무르익는 것입니다. 나이가 들어도 꿈을 꾸고 계속 배우는 사람은 영원한 청춘으로 살아가는 사람입니다. 우리의 삶이 나아지기 위해서는 변화하고 성장해야 합니다. 짐 론은 “당신의 삶은 우연히 더 나아지는 것이 아니라 변화에 의해 더 나아지는 것이다.”라고 말합니다. 우리를 성장하도록 도와주는 자극은 네 가지 은혜의 수단을 통해 찾아옵니다.

첫째, 책이 우리를 성장하도록 자극합니다. 책 중의 책은 성경입니다. 성경을 읽게 되면 성장에 대한 자극을 받습니다. 우리가 본 받아야 할 인물들을 만납니다. 그들의 대부분은 미천하게 시작했지만 훌륭한 인물로 성장했습니다. 요셉, 모세, 다윗, 다니엘, 에스더, 룻과 예수님의 제자들을 만나 보십시오. 그들이 어떻게 성장했는가를 연구해 보십시오. 성경과 함께 성장에 자극을 주는 책들을 날마다 읽으십시오. 책은 우리에게 변화와 성장의 중요성을 깨우쳐 줍니다. 또한 우리가 성장할 수 있는 구체적인 길을 보여 줍니다.

둘째, 좋은 만남이 우리를 성장하도록 자극합니다. 좋은 만남은 우리를 더욱 훌륭한 인물로 성장하도록 도와줍니다. 좋은 만남은 우리 안에 있는 잠재력을 보게 하고, 그 잠재력을 개발하도록 도와줍니다. 좋은 만남은 우리가 성장할 수 있는 기회를 제공해 줍니다. 모세와 여호수아의 만남은 좋은 만남입니다. 모세는 여호수아에게 하나님의 말씀을 가르쳐주었습니다(수 1:7). 예수님과 제자들과의 만남은 좋은 만남입니다. 좋은 만남을 통해 우리는 하나님을 만나게 됩니다. 하나님을 만나면 가장 큰 자극을 받습니다. 큰 자극은 자각(自覺)을 낳습니다. 자각이란 영적 각성(覺醒)을 의미합니다. 우리는 자각을 통해 자신의 진면모와 하나님의 진면모를 보게 됩니다.

셋째, 고난이 우리를 성장하도록 자극합니다. 고난은 고통입니다. 고통은 교훈을 줍니다. 고통은 눈을 열어줍니다. 고통은 우리를 움직이게 합니다. 우리를 변화시킵니다. 고통은 하나님을 바라보게 합니다. 고난은 성장을 넘어 성숙하도록 도와줍니다. 원숙함에 이르도록 도와줍니다. 그런 까닭에 우리는 고난을 낭비하지 않아야 합니다. 고난을 변화와 성숙의 기회로 만들어야 합니다.

넷째, 학습 공동체가 성장을 자극합니다. 하나님이 히브리민족을 바로의 손에서 건져내신 후에 그들을 학습 공동체로 세우셨습니다. 광야 40년 동안 그들은 집중적으로 하나님의 지혜와 지식을 배웠습니다. 그리함으로 세계 모든 민족 위에 뛰어난 나라로 성장했습니다. 예수님은 제자들을 학습 공동체 안에서 성장케 하셨습니다. 성령 충만을 받은 초대 교회는 학습 공동체였습니다. 초대 교회 성도들은 사도의 가르침을 받고 서로 교제하며 함께 기도하는 가운데 성장했습니다(행 2:42). 모든 교회는 학습 공동체가 되어야 합니다. 세월이 빠르게 지나갑니다. 세월을 낭비하지 않는 길은 모든 기회를 배움의 기회로 삼는 것입니다. 성장의 기회로 만드는 것입니다. 저는 날마다 성장하길 원합니다. 그래서 오늘도 주님의 은혜 안에서 배웁니다.

Wisdom of Responding Positively to Stimuli

Stimulation is a catalyst for growth. There are positive stimuli and there are negative stimuli. Positive stimulation is one that helps us grow. As we grow, we feel delight. We also feel great joy when we see the people we love grow (3 John 1:3). The reason is because God has instilled a growth instinct in us. The joy of growth is great. But growth isn't easy. It is even more difficult to grow continuously. The reason is that people prefer settling down over growing. It is also because they struggle with the price they have to pay for their growth.

It is wise to choose growth, even if there is a price to pay. There is a valuable lesson I have learned in my life's journey. The lesson is that if you don't bear the pain of growth, you have to suffer the pain of not growing. There are many benefits to growth. On the other hand, if you don't grow, there are many problems. That is why you must respond positively when you are stimulated to grow.

The word stimulus is defined as the following in the Naver dictionary. “It causes a reaction in the senses or mind.” Stimulus produces a reaction. It is also a reaction that does not react when stimulated. We have to choose how we will respond when we are stimulated. “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom,” says Stephen Covey. It is wise to respond positively to stimuli for growth and happiness.

If the stimulus is the cause, the response is the effect. Stimulation urges us to change. When you have a good stimulus, respond with new changes. That's when we continue to receive good stimulation. You can grow as much as you can even if you are old. Growing in old ages is also being ripened. People who dream and continue learning even when they get older are those who live in eternal youth. To make our lives better, we need to change and grow. Jim Ron says, "Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change." The stimulation that helps us grow comes through four means of grace.

First, books stimulate us to grow. The book of the books is the Bible. Reading the Bible stimulates growth. We meet people we should model after. Most of them started off in lowly places, but grow into great characters. Meet Joseph, Moses, David, Daniel, Esther, Ruth and Jesus' disciples. Study how they grow up. Read the Bible daily and the books that stimulate growth. Books remind us of the importance of change and growth. They also show the specific paths we can grow on.

Second, good encounters stimulate us to grow. Good encounters help us grow into better people. Good encounters let us see the potential within us and help us develop that potential. Good encounters give us opportunities to grow. The encounter between Moses and Joshua is a good encounter. Moses taught Joshua the word of God (Joshua 1:7). The encounter between Jesus and his disciples is a good encounter. Through good encounters, we meet God. We are most stimulated, when we meet God. Great stimulus produces self-awareness (自覺). Self-awareness means spiritual awakening (覺醒). Through self-awareness, we see our true face and God's true face.

Third, suffering stimulates us to grow. Suffering is pain. Pain teaches us a lesson. Pain opens the eyes. Pain moves us. It changes us. Pain makes us look to God. Suffering helps us mature beyond growth. It helps us reach full maturity. That is why we should not waste suffering. We must turn suffering into an opportunity for change and maturity.

Fourth, our learning community stimulates growth. After God delivered the Israelites from Pharaoh's hand, He established them as a learning community. During the 40 years of the wilderness, they intensively learned the wisdom and knowledge of God. As a result, they have grown into a nation high above all nations in the world. Jesus made His disciples grow in a learning community. The early church, filled with the Holy Spirit, was a learning community. The members of the early church grew up as they were taught by the apostles, had fellowship, and prayed together (Acts 2:42). Every church should be a learning community. Time passes quickly. The way not to waste time is to use every opportunity as an opportunity to learn. It is to make it an opportunity for growth. I want to grow every day. That is why I learn today in the grace of the Lord.
