[목회서신] 작은 기회를 소중히 여기는 지혜 | Wisdom to Cherish Small Opportunities

작은 기회를 소중히 여기는 것이 지혜입니다. 사람들은 큰 기회를 기다리느라 작은 기회들을 수없이 흘려보냅니다. 왜 작은 기회를 소중히 여기는 것이 지혜일까요? 어떻게 작은 기회를 큰 기회로 키울 수 있을까요? 어떻게 하면 작은 기회 속에 담긴 비밀을 깨닫고 그 기회를 포착할 수 있을까요?

첫째, 하나님은 작은 기회 속에 큰 기회를 감추어 두십니다. 하나님의 나라는 겨자씨의 나라입니다. 아주 작은 겨자씨가 점점 자라 나무가 되어 새들이 와서 깃들게 됩니다(마 13:31-32). 지혜란 작은 기회 속에 담긴 무한한 잠재력을 볼 수 있는 통찰력입니다. 지혜로운 사람들은 작은 것을 소중히 여깁니다. 그 이유는 모든 위대한 것은 작게 시작된다는 원리를 깨닫고 있기 때문입니다. 거대한 나무도 작은 씨앗에서 시작됩니다. 울창한 숲도 작은 나무 한 그루에서 시작됩니다. 사람도 작은 씨앗에서 시작해서 어른이 됩니다. 거대한 탑도 작은 벽돌 한 장에서 시작됩니다. 높은 건물도 한 사람의 작은 생각 속에서 시작됩니다. 제가 글을 쓰고 책을 출판하게 된 기회를 추적해 보면 독후감을 기고한 것으로 시작됩니다. 그다음에 말씀 묵상 칼럼을 크리스천 신문에 10번 기고한 것으로 발전됩니다. 그 신문 칼럼이 저의 첫 번째 책인 《묵상과 영적 성숙》입니다.

둘째, 하나님은 일상의 삶 속에 작은 기회를 감추어 두십니다. 큰 기회는 눈에 쉽게 띄지만 자주 나타나지 않습니다. 반면에 작은 기회는 눈에 쉽게 띄지 않지만 날마다의 삶 속에 감추어져 있습니다. 작은 기회는 일상의 삶 속에서 어떻게 발견할 수 있을까요? 그것은 주어진 일에 최선을 다하는 것입니다. 룻이 시어머니를 공궤하기 위해 시작한 일은 이삭을 줍는 일이었습니다. 룻은 이삭을 줍는 일에 최선을 다하는 중에 보아스를 만나게 되었습니다. 기회의 크기보다 더 중요한 것은 주어진 기회를 최대한 선용하는 것입니다. 기회의 크기를 따지지 말고 모든 기회를 선용하십시오. 하나님이 주신 모든 기회는 하나님의 선물입니다. 하나님이 주신 기회의 선물을 가지고 어떻게 최선을 다하느냐에 따라 그다음 역사가 전개됩니다. 우리 일상 속에는 하나님이 주신 기회들로 가득 차 있습니다. 배울 기회, 훈련받을 기회, 사랑할 기회, 섬길 기회, 베풀 기회, 그리고 헌신할 기회로 가득 차 있습니다. 세계를 변화시키려고 하지 마십시오. 오늘 주어진 작은 기회를 찾아 주어진 일에 최선을 다하십시오.

셋째, 하나님은 낯선 만남 속에 작은 기회를 감추어 두십니다. 일상의 삶 속에 찾아온 낯선 만남을 소중히 여기는 것이 지혜입니다. 하나님의 기회는 우리가 만나는 사람을 통해 찾아옵니다. 그래서 우리는 날마다 만나는 사람들을 존중해야 합니다. 일터에서 만나는 낯선 만남을 소중히 여겨야 합니다. 모든 만남이 다 좋은 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 만남은 우리 인생을 망가뜨릴 수 있습니다. 그런 까닭에 사람들을 만날 때 좋은 만남과 나쁜 만남을 분별하는 지혜가 필요합니다. 하나님은 좋은 만남 속에 좋은 기회를 담아 두십니다. 그래서 우리는 만남에 늘 깨어 있어야 합니다.

요셉이 보디발의 아내의 유혹을 물리친 대가로 감옥에 들어갔습니다. 그런데 바로 그 감옥에서 술 맡은 관원과 떡 맡은 관원을 만나게 됩니다. 요셉은 그들을 성심을 다해 섬겼습니다. 그중에 술 맡은 관원이 나중에 요셉을 바로 앞에 서도록 도와줍니다. 요셉은 낯선 만남을 잘 섬기는 중에 바로 왕을 만나게 됩니다. 그는 바로 왕을 만나 국무총리가 되어 가족들과 만민의 생명을 구원하는 역할을 하게 됩니다(창 50:20). 저를 복되게 만든 것은 좋은 만남입니다. 예수님을 만난 것이 가장 큰 복입니다. 그 후에 좋은 아내, 탁월한 멘토, 훌륭한 성도님들과 동역자들을 만났습니다. 하나님은 우리를 축복하실 때 만남을 통해 축복하십니다. 그런 까닭에 좋은 만남을 소중히 여기고 그 만남을 지속적으로 가꾸는 것이 지혜입니다.

넷째, 하나님은 기도를 통해 작은 기회를 깨닫게 하십니다. 바울은 “기도에 감사함으로 깨어 있으라”(골 4:2)고 권면합니다. 기도하면 깨어 있게 됩니다. 깨어 있다는 것은 영의 눈이 열려 있다는 것입니다. 영의 눈이 열려 있을 때 하나님이 예비해 두신 기회를 보게 됩니다. 특별히 고난 속에 담긴 기회를 보게 됩니다. 장애물 속에 담긴 기회를 보게 됩니다. 역경 속에 담긴 기회를 보게 됩니다. 하나님의 기회는 고난으로 변장 되어 찾아올 때가 많습니다. 우리는 고난을 싫어합니다. 그런데 고난을 싫어하면 고난 속에 담긴 변장 된 기회와 축복을 놓치게 됩니다. 기도하게 되면 하나님의 아이디어를 얻게 됩니다. 사람들은 명상을 통해 좋은 아이디어를 얻습니다. 하지만 우리는 기도를 통해 하나님의 아이디어를 얻습니다. 좋은 아이디어와 하나님의 아이디어는 하늘과 땅만큼 차이가 있습니다(사 55:9). 날마다 기도하는 중에 하나님이 일상 속에 담아두신 작은 기회를 포착하십시오. 그 기회를 큰 기회로 만드시길 바랍니다.

Wisdom to Cherish Small Opportunities

It is wise to cherish the little opportunities. People waste countless small opportunities as they wait for big ones. Why is it wise to cherish small opportunities? How can we turn small opportunities into big ones? How can we realize the secrets of small opportunities and seize them?

First, God hides big opportunities in small opportunities. The kingdom of God is the kingdom of mustard seeds. A very small mustard seed gradually grows and becomes a tree, where birds come and nest (Matthew 13:31-32). Wisdom is the insight to see the infinite potential of small opportunities. Wise people value the little things. The reason is because they realize the principle that all great things start small. Even giant trees start with small seeds. Even a dense forest starts with a small tree. Humans start from small seeds and become adults. Even a huge tower starts with a single small brick. Even a tall building starts with a small idea of one person. When I trace back to my opportunities to write and publish a book, it started with writing a book review. Then it developed into writing articles on the meditation of the Word, ten times, for Christian newspapers. And those newspaper articles became my first book, Meditation and Spiritual Maturity.

Second, God hides small opportunities in our daily lives. Big opportunities are easy to spot, but they don't show up often. Small opportunities, on the other hand, are not easily noticed but are hidden in our day-to-day life. How can we find small opportunities in our everyday life? It's about doing our best in a given task. What Ruth began to do to feed her mother-in-law was to glean. Ruth met Boaz while she was doing her best in gleaning. More importantly than the size of the opportunity is to make the most of the given opportunity. Don't judge the size of the opportunity, take advantage of every opportunity. Every opportunity God gives is a gift from God. The next history will unfold depending on how you do your best with the gift of opportunity God has given you. Our daily lives are full of opportunities God has given us. They are full of opportunities for learning, training, loving, serving, giving, and committing. Don't try to change the world. Find the small opportunities given today and do your best in the given tasks.

Third, God hides small opportunities in unfamiliar encounters. It is wisdom to cherish unfamiliar encounters in everyday life. God's opportunities come through the people we meet. So we must honor the people we meet every day. We should cherish the new encounters we encounter at work. Not all encounters are good. Some encounters can ruin our lives. That is why, when meeting people, you need wisdom to discern between good and bad encounters. God puts good opportunities in good encounters. So we must always be awake in encounters.

Joseph went to prison for resisting the temptation of Potiphar's wife. But in the same prison, he met the chief cupbearer and the chief baker. Joseph served them wholeheartedly. Among them, the cupbearer later helped Joseph stand before Pharaoh. Joseph met Pharaoh while serving an unfamiliar encounter. He met King Pharaoh and became the Prime Minister, whose role is to save the lives of his family and all peoples (Genesis 50:20). Good encounters blessed me. Encountering Jesus is the greatest blessing. After that, I met a good wife, excellent mentors, and wonderful saints and co-workers. When God blesses us, He blesses us through encounters. Therefore, it is wise to cherish good encounters and cultivate them continuously.

Fourth, God makes us realize small opportunities through prayer. Paul exhorts us to “devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful” (Colossians 4:2). Praying will keep you awake. To be awake means to open your spiritual eyes. When your spiritual eyes are open, you will see the opportunities God has prepared for you. In particular, you will see opportunities contained in hardship. You will see opportunities contained in obstacles. You will see opportunities contained in adversity. God's opportunities often come disguised as suffering. We hate suffering. However, if you hate suffering, you will miss out on opportunities and blessings in disguise. When you pray, you will get God's ideas. People get good ideas through meditation. But we get God's ideas through prayer. A good idea and God's idea are as different as heaven and earth (Isaiah 55:9). In your daily prayers, seize the little opportunities God has placed in your daily life. I hope you turn that opportunity into a great opportunity.
