[목회서신] 좋은 반복이 기적을 낳습니다! | Good Repetition Brings Forth Miracles!

좋은 반복이 기적을 낳습니다. 제가 반복에 대한 관심을 갖게 된 것은 말씀 묵상 속에 감추인 반복의 지혜 때문입니다. “이 율법책을 네 입에서 떠나지 말게 하며 주야로 그것을 묵상하여 그 안에 기록된 대로 다 지켜 행하라 그리하면 네 길이 평탄하게 될 것이며 네가 형통하리라”(수 1:8). 말씀 묵상의 비밀은 반복에 있습니다. 말씀 묵상은 하나님의 말씀을 입에서 떠나지 않게 하고, 그것을 주야로 묵상하는 것입니다. 주야로 묵상하기 위해서는 반복해야 합니다. 묵상이란 뜻 속에 “반추(反芻)하다”는 뜻이 있습니다. 반추란 소가 삼킨 음식을 다시 꺼내어 되새김질하는 것입니다. 반추란 어떤 말이나, 어떤 일을 되풀이하여 음미하거나 생각하는 것을 의미합니다. 반추의 비밀은 바로 반복에 있습니다.

하나님의 말씀을 주야로 묵상하게 되면 그 말씀이 먼저 머리에 새겨집니다. 성경 암송은 말씀을 먼저 머리에 새기는 것입니다. 암송한 말씀을 더욱 깊이 반복해서 묵상하게 되면 머리에 있는 말씀이 마음으로 내려오게 됩니다. 그때 하나님의 말씀이 우리 마음 판에 새겨지게 됩니다. 마음 판에 새겨질 뿐 아니라 마음의 그릇에 하나님의 말씀이 차곡차곡 쌓이게 됩니다. 말씀이 우리 마음에 풍성히 거하게 됩니다(골 3:16). 예수님은 우리 마음에 가득한 것을 입으로 말한다고 가르쳐 주십니다. “이는 마음에 가득한 것을 입으로 말함이니라”(눅 6:45하).

하나님은 여호수아에게 말씀 묵상을 통한 형통을 약속하셨습니다. 말씀 묵상은 형통을 낳습니다. 곧 말씀 묵상을 반복하고, 그 말씀을 지켜 행하게 되면 형통을 경험하게 됩니다. 반복은 형통을 낳습니다. 하나님이 가르쳐 주시는 말씀 묵상의 비밀은 반복 속에 담긴 즐거움입니다. “오직 여호와의 율법을 즐거워하여 그의 율법을 주야로 묵상하는도다”(시 1:2). 말씀 묵상을 반복하기 위해서는 말씀을 즐거워해야 합니다. 우리는 즐거워하는 것을 반복하고, 반복하는 것을 즐거워하게 됩니다. 즐거움과 반복은 연결되어 있습니다.

물론 모든 반복이 즐거운 것은 아닙니다. 반복의 장애물은 게으름과 조급함과 지루함입니다. 게으름이 조급함을 낳습니다. 조급함이 지루함을 낳습니다. 반복을 통해 기적을 경험하기 위해서는 특별히 지루함을 정복해야 합니다. 반복하는 중에 지루함을 경험하는 것은 반복에 대한 중요성을 충분히 자각하지 못한 까닭입니다. 또한 아무리 반복해도 어떤 결과가 당장 나타나지 않을 때 지루함을 경험하게 됩니다. 반복의 열매는 지루함의 과정을 잘 통과할 때 경험하게 됩니다. 모든 반복이 좋은 것이 아닙니다. 나쁜 반복은 나쁜 습관을 낳고, 나쁜 습관은 나쁜 성품을 낳습니다. 나쁜 성품은 나쁜 선택을 하게 됩니다. 그래서 우리는 좋은 것을 반복해야 합니다.

나쁜 반복보다 어려운 것이 좋은 반복입니다. 인간의 죄의 본성 때문에 나쁜 반복은 너무 자연스럽습니다. 그래서 힘들지 않게 익숙해집니다. 그 결과는 비참합니다. 반면에 좋은 반복은 우리 안에 없는 비 본성 즉 하나님의 성품을 형성하는 것이기 때문에 처음에 힘이 듭니다. 하지만 결과가 아주 좋습니다. 그래서 좋은 반복을 영성 훈련이라고 하는 것입니다. 좋은 영성은 시야를 넓혀줍니다. 좋은 것을 반복하게 되면 시야가 넓어지고, 깊은 통찰력과 깨달음을 경험하게 됩니다.

반복은 탁월함에 이르는 길입니다. 위대한 인물들은 한결같이 반복의 소중함을 알았습니다. 탁월한 연주와 탁월한 작품은 모두 반복의 결과입니다. 한순간에 위대한 작품이 나올 수 없습니다. 절차탁마의 과정을 거친 후에야 위대한 작품이 탄생합니다. 하나님은 반복의 하나님이십니다. 하나님의 사랑의 비밀은 반복에 있습니다. 사랑하는 대상을 거듭 찾아오시는 것입니다.

하나님은 이스라엘 백성을 선택하신 후에 반복해서 선지자들을 보내셨습니다. 그들은 패역했고, 하나님을 배신했습니다. 하지만 하나님은 반복해서 그들에게 선지자들을 보내셨고, 나중에 독생하신 예수님을 보내셨습니다. 서울 여대 장경철 교수님은 《성품, 두란노》이란 책에서 참된 사랑의 비밀은 횟수를 더해가는 반복에 있다고 가르쳐 줍니다. 참된 사랑은 상대방의 반응과 상관없이 사랑의 횟수를 더해가는 것입니다. 또한 아름다운 성품도 횟수를 더해가는 반복을 통해 형성된다고 가르쳐 줍니다. 반복은 참된 사랑의 비밀이며, 아름다운 성품을 형성하는 비밀입니다.

좋은 반복은 탁월한 스승 중의 하나입니다. 프랭크 티볼트는 “반복을 소홀히 한다면 당신은 최고의 스승을 무시하는 것이다.”라고 말합니다. 성경에 나오는 기적들은 반복을 통해 나타납니다. 여리고 성벽은 7일 동안 13번 반복해서 도는 가운데 무너졌습니다(수 6:20). 엘리야가 무릎을 꿇고 7번 반복해서 기도했을 때 하늘에서 소낙비가 임했습니다(왕상 18:45). 나아만 장군의 나병은 요단강에 7번 반복해서 몸을 담갔을 때 깨끗하게 치료되었습니다(왕하 5:14). 좋은 반복을 통해 탁월함의 경지에 이르도록 하십시오. 좋은 반복을 통해 놀라운 기적을 경험하시길 빕니다.

Good Repetition Brings Forth Miracles!

Good repetition brings forth miracles. My interest in repetition has grown because of the wisdom hidden within repetitive meditation on the Word. “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” (Joshua 1:8). The secret of meditating on the Word lies in repetition. Meditating on the Word ensures that it does not depart from your mouth and involves pondering it day and night. To meditate day and night, one must engage in repetition. The meaning of meditation includes “ruminating.” It is like when a cow regurgitates and chews its food again. Ruminating means repeating certain words or actions, savoring and contemplating them. The secret of rumination lies precisely in repetition.

When you meditate on God's Word day and night, that Word is first engraved in your mind. Memorizing scripture is the act of inscribing the Word in your mind. When you further repeat and meditate on the memorized Word, the Word that's in your mind descends into your heart. It's then, that God's Word is written onto the tablet of our hearts. Not only does it get inscribed onto the tablet of our hearts, but God's Word also accumulates in the vessel of our hearts, layer by layer. The Word becomes richly present within us (Colossians 3:16). Jesus teaches us that what fills our hearts will be spoken from our mouths. "For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks" (Luke 6:45b).

God promised success to Joshua through meditating on his Word. Meditating on the Word brings about success. Specifically, by repeating and then diligently obeying the meditated word, we will experience success. Repetition breeds success. The secret joy of meditating on God's word, as taught by God, is encapsulated in repetition. “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2). To engage in repeated meditation, one must find joy in the Word. We find joy in what we repeat, and we repeat what brings us joy. Joy and repetition are interconnected.

Of course, not all repetition is enjoyable. Obstacles to repetition include laziness, impatience, and boredom. Laziness gives birth to impatience. Impatience gives birth to boredom. To experience miracles through repetition, one must particularly conquer boredom. Experiencing boredom during repetition is often due to not fully realizing the importance of repetition. Additionally, boredom can arise when results don't immediately manifest no matter how much you repeat. The fruits of repetition are experienced when you successfully navigate through the process of boredom. Not all repetition is beneficial. Bad repetition breeds bad habits, which in turn gives birth to bad character. Bad character lead to poor choices. That's why we should engage in repetition of the good.

More challenging than bad repetition is good repetition. Due to human's inherent sinful nature, bad repetition comes quite naturally. It becomes comfortable without much effort, resulting in a miserable outcome. On the other hand, good repetition is initially difficult because it involves cultivating attributes that are not part of our core nature—attributes of God's character. However, the results are highly rewarding. This is why good repetition is often referred to as spiritual discipline. A strong spirituality broadens one's perspective. Engaging in good repetition expands our perspective, leading to profound insights and realizations.

Repetition is the path to excellence. Great individuals have consistently recognized the value of repetition. Outstanding performances and exceptional works are both outcomes of repetition. A momentary stroke of greatness cannot create exceptional work. Only after undergoing the refining process of diligent repetition does exceptional work come to life. God is the God of repetition. The secret of God's love lies in repetition. It is the act of continually seeking the beloved, again.

After choosing the Israelite people, God repeatedly sent prophets to them. They rebelled and turned away from Him, yet God repeatedly sent prophets to them and eventually sent his only begotten Son, Jesus. Professor Jang Kyung-chul of Seoul Women's University teaches in his book "Character," that the secret of true love lies in accumulating repetitions. True love involves increasing the number of loving acts regardless of the recipient's response. Furthermore, he teaches that beautiful character is also formed through the accumulation of repetitions. Repetition is the secret of true love and the secret of forming beautiful character.

Good repetition is among the marks of an excellent teacher. Frank Tyger once said, "You are neglecting your best teacher when you neglect repetition." Miracles mentioned in the Bible often occur through repetition. The walls of Jericho fell after being circled for seven days, repeated thirteen times (Joshua 6:20). Elijah prayed with his face between his knees seven times, and then a rainstorm came (1 Kings 18:45). Naaman's leprosy was cleansed after he dipped himself seven times in the Jordan River (2 Kings 5:14). Strive for excellence through good repetition. May you experience remarkable miracles through the power of positive repetition.
