[목회서신] 한계 속에 감춰두신 하나님의 지혜 | God’s Wisdom Hidden Within Limits

우리는 한계를 좋아하지 않습니다. 특별히 포스트모던 시대 속에 살고 있는 사람들은 모든 한계를 무너뜨리는 것을 즐기는 것 같습니다. 한계는 하나님의 질서입니다. 하나님의 지혜입니다. 한계는 경계를 의미합니다. 하나님이 나라마다 경계를 정해 주셨습니다. 그 경계를 침범하는 것이 전쟁입니다. 전쟁은 비극을 낳습니다. 우크라이나와 러시아의 전쟁이 멈추기를 기도하고 있습니다. 전쟁은 평화를 깨뜨립니다. 전쟁은 수많은 생명을 빼앗아 갑니다. 아름다운 나라를 황폐케 만듭니다. 수많은 난민을 낳습니다. 우리나라에 전쟁이 일어나지 않기를 기도드립니다.

하나님은 바다에 경계를 정해 주셨습니다. 바다는 썰물과 밀물이 있습니다. 하나님이 바다에 경계를 정해 주신 까닭에 바닷물이 경계를 넘어서지 않습니다. 쓰나미와 큰 태풍과 큰 폭풍이 아니면, 바닷물은 경계를 넘어서지 않습니다. 경계는 생명선입니다. “너는 백성을 위하여 주위에 경계를 정하고 이르기를 너희는 삼가 산에 오르거나 그 경계를 침범하지 말지니 산을 침범하는 자는 반드시 죽임을 당할 것이라”(출 19:12). 한계는 난간과 같습니다. 절벽 난간은 위험합니다. 그 난간을 잘 지키는 것이 지혜입니다.

한계를 잘 지키는 것이 가정을 지키는 길입니다. 가정이라는 한계 안에서 남편과 아내가 가정의 선을 지킬 때 가정은 행복해집니다. 가정이라는 선을 넘어 외도하기 시작하면 가정은 어려워집니다. 진정한 행복은 한계 속에 임합니다. 진정한 안전은 한계 속에 임합니다. 기차는 철로를 따라 움직일 때 가장 안전합니다. 가장 자유롭습니다. 그 기량을 최대한 발휘할 수 있습니다. 기차가 자신의 한계를 무시하고 철로를 이탈할 때 기차는 전복되고 맙니다. 기차가 전복될 때 수많은 사람들의 생명이 위협에 처할 수 있습니다. 기차는 더 이상 자신의 역할을 감당할 수가 없습니다.

자리를 지키는 것이 별것 아닌 것처럼 생각하는 사람들이 있습니다. 그것은 위험한 생각입니다. 타락한 천사의 문제는 자리를 잘 지키지 않은 것입니다. “또 자기 지위를 지키지 아니하고 자기 처소를 떠난 천사들을 큰 날의 심판까지 영원한 결박으로 흑암에 가두셨으며”(유 1:6). 지도자가 자기 자리를 지키는 것이 중요합니다. 엄마와 아빠가 가정에서 자기 자리를 지키는 것이 중요합니다. 군인이 전쟁터에서 자기 자리를 지키는 것이 중요합니다. 의사는 병원에서 자신의 자리를 지켜야 합니다. 수술실에서 수술의가 자리를 지키지 않는다면 무슨 일이 벌어질까요? 목회자는 목회자로서의 자리를 잘 지켜야 합니다. 교사는 학교에서 교사의 자리를 잘 지켜야 합니다. 성도는 예배의 자리를 잘 지켜야 합니다. 교회에서 맡겨주신 일을 잘 감당하는 자리를 지켜야 합니다.

하나님이 우리를 불편한 한계 속에 두실 때가 있습니다. 그런데 바로 그 한계 속에 들어가는 것이 축복입니다. 무한한 능력을 가지신 예수님이 인간의 육신을 입으셨습니다. 스스로 인간의 몸이라는 한계 속에 들어오신 것입니다. 예수님이 십자가에 못 박히셨습니다. 아무도 원치 않는 십자가의 한계 속으로 들어가신 것입니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 내려오라는 사람들의 비아냥거리는 소리를 듣지 않으시고, 십자가의 자리를 끝까지 지키셨습니다. 그리고 죽으신지 사흘 만에 부활하셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가를 통해 영광과 존귀의 관을 쓰셨습니다(히 2:9).

한계는 걸림돌이 아니라 축복의 디딤돌입니다. 한계를 어떻게 보고 어떻게 해석하고 어떻게 반응하느냐가 중요합니다. 애슐리 헤일스는 “우리의 한계를 멋진 삶의 걸림돌이 아니라 멋진 삶에 들어가는 문으로 볼 줄 알아야 한다.”라고 말합니다.(애슐리 헤일스, 『작아서 아름다운』, IVP, 59쪽). 한계는 좁은 문과 같습니다. 하지만 그 문이 생명의 문입니다. 축복의 문입니다. 풍성한 열매를 맺는 문입니다. 좁은 문 안으로 들어가면 상상할 수 없는 아름다운 일들이 전개됩니다.

조니 에릭슨 타다는 1967년 7월 어느 여름날, 체사피크 만에서 수심이 얕은 것을 파악하지 못한 채 다이빙을 했습니다. 목이 부러져 어깨 아래로 전신이 마비되는 불의의 사고를 당했습니다. 그 사고 이후로 휠체어라는 한계 속에 살고 있습니다. 그녀는 휠체어라는 한계를 벗어나서 걸을 수 있기를 소원하며 하나님께 치유를 위해 기도했습니다. 하지만 하나님은 그녀를 휠체어에 머물게 하심으로 더욱 존귀하고 영광스럽게 만드셨습니다. 그녀는 휠체어를 통해 예수님 안으로 들어갔습니다. 예수님과 동행하게 되었습니다. 예수님과 함께 그녀는 지금까지 40여 권 이상의 책을 썼습니다. 다수의 음반을 냈습니다. 자신의 이야기를 담은 영화에 출연했습니다. 장애인들을 옹호하고 지원하는 사역을 하고 있습니다.

하나님은 바울에게 육체의 가시를 허락하셨습니다. 그는 연약함의 한계 속에 살았습니다. 하지만 그의 연약함 위에 그리스도의 능력이 머물렀습니다. 하나님은 그의 연약함을 통해 놀라운 일을 이루었습니다. 한계 때문에 한탄하지 마십시오. 오히려 한계를 끌어안으십시오. 지켜야 할 경계와 위치와 자리를 잘 지키십시오. 한계를 통해 더욱 아름다운 일을 이루시길 빕니다.

God’s Wisdom Hidden Within Limits

We do not like limits. Especially in the postmodern era, it seems that people enjoy breaking down all limits. Limits are God's order. They are God's wisdom. Limits mean boundaries. God has set boundaries for each nation. Crossing those boundaries leads to war. War brings tragedy. We pray for an end to the war between Ukraine and Russia. War disrupts peace. War takes countless lives. It turns beautiful countries into wastelands. It creates countless refugees. We pray that there will be no war in our country.

God has set boundaries for the sea. The sea has high and low tides. Because God has set boundaries for the sea, the waters do not cross those boundaries, except in the case of tsunamis, great typhoons, or severe storms. Boundaries are a lifeline. “Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not go up the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death’” (Exodus 19:12). Limits are like guardrails. Cliff guardrails are crucial. Keeping those guardrails is wisdom.

Keeping boundaries is the way to protect a family. When a husband and wife uphold the boundaries of their family, the family becomes happier. When they start to cross the boundaries of the family, it becomes difficult. True happiness lies within limits. True safety lies within limits. A train is safest and freest when it moves along the rails. It can operate at its maximum capacity. When a train ignores its limits and derails from the tracks, it can lead to disaster. Many lives can be threatened when a train derails. The train can no longer fulfill its role.

There are those who consider keeping their positions as something trivial. It is a dangerous thought. The problem with fallen angels was that they did not keep their positions properly. “And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day” (Jude 6). It is important for leaders to keep their positions and responsibilities. Moms and dads should keep their roles within the family. Soldiers should keep their positions on the battlefield. Doctors should keep their roles in hospitals. What would happen in an operating room if a surgeon didn't keep their position? Pastors should keep their roles as pastors. Teachers should keep their positions in schools. Believers should keep their places in worship. They should keep the responsibilities entrusted to them in the church.

There are times when God places us within uncomfortable limits. However, it is often within those very limits that blessings can be found. Jesus, who possesses infinite power, chose to take on human flesh. He willingly entered the limits of human existence. Jesus allowed Himself to be nailed to the cross. He willingly entered the limits of a cross that no one else desired. Despite the mockery and ridicule from those who told Him to come down from the cross, Jesus held His position on the cross until the end. Then, after His death, He rose again on the third day. Through the cross, Jesus was crowned with glory and honor (Hebrews 2:9).

Limits are not obstacles but stepping stones to blessings. How we perceive, interpret, and respond to limits is crucial. Ashley Hales says, "We must learn to see our limits as the entrance into the good life, not what bars us from it (Ashley Hales, “A Space Life,” IVP, 32) Limits are like narrow doors, but they are doors to life, blessings, and abundant fruitfulness. When we enter through these narrow doors, unimaginable beauty unfolds.

Joni Eareckson Tada, at the age of 17, went diving in Chesapeake Bay on a summer day in July 1967, unaware of the shallow depth. She suffered an unfortunate accident that left her paralyzed from the shoulders down due to a broken neck. Since that accident, she has been living within the confines of a wheelchair. She wished and prayed to God for healing, hoping to break free from the limitations of the wheelchair. However, God chose to let her remain in the wheelchair, making her even more honorable and glorious. Through her wheelchair, Tada found her way into the presence of Jesus. She began to walk with Jesus. Together with Jesus, she has written over 40 books to date, released numerous albums, acted in a movie depicting her own story, and engaged in a ministry advocating for and supporting people with disabilities.

God allowed Paul to have a bodily thorn. He lived within the limits of weakness. But on his weakness, the power of Christ dwelled. Through his weakness, God accomplished amazing things. Do not complain because of your limits. Instead, embrace your limits. Keep your boundaries, positions, and places well. May God accomplish even more beautiful things through your limits.
