[목회서신] 환대 속에 감추인 지혜 | Wisdom Hidden in Hospitality

제가 매주 글을 쓰고 있다는 것도 기적입니다. 저는 매일 기적을 경험합니다. 그래서 날마다 기적을 기대하며 삽니다. 한편의 글을 쓰고 나면 그 다음에 쓸 글을 생각합니다. 글감을 찾느라 늘 깨어 있습니다. 글감이란 글의 내용이 되는 재료나 소재를 의미합니다. 마치 요리를 잘하는 분들이 늘 좋은 재료를 찾는 것과 같습니다. 오늘 제가 새벽 일찍 만난 글감은 “환대”입니다. 환대 속에는 놀라운 비밀이 감춰있습니다. 환대는 지혜입니다. 환대는 배우고 익혀야 할 삶의 예술입니다. 우리 삶의 많은 것들은 환대와 관련되어 있습니다.

네이버 사전은 “환대란 반갑게 맞아 정성껏 후하게 대접함”이라고 정의하고 있습니다. 환대는 환영하는 것입니다. 기쁨으로 영접하는 것입니다. 따뜻하게 용납하는 것입니다. 우리는 환대를 받아본 경험이 있습니다. 또한 거절을 당해본 경험이 있습니다. 환대를 받은 경험이 우리 삶을 풍성하게 합니다. 반면에 거절당한 상처가 우리 삶을 힘들게 합니다.

우리는 거절보다는 환대를 원합니다. 저도 환대받을 때 행복합니다. 환대는 어떻게 시작되는 것일까요? 환대는 시선의 마주침에서 시작됩니다. 환대는 만남입니다. 우리가 보는 것이 모두 우리 눈에 들어오는 것이 아닙니다. 본다고 보는 것이 아닙니다. 보여준다고 볼 수 있는 것도 아닙니다. 똑같은 것을 보고도 어떤 사람은 경탄하고 어떤 사람은 무감각합니다. 그렇게 보면 환대도 은총의 사건입니다. 환대받고, 환대를 베푼다는 것은 은혜입니다.

제가 전에 섬기던 교회를 떠날 때 저는 내리막길에 들어섰습니다. 그때 읽었던 시 한 편이 제게 울림으로 다가왔습니다. 〔순간의 꽃〕에 수록된 고은선생님의 시입니다.

내려갈 때 보았네

올라갈 때 못 본

그 꽃

내려갈 때 보았던 꽃은 올라갈 때 보지 못했던 바로 그 꽃입니다. 제가 한창 올라가고 있는 동안에 보지 못했던 꽃을 내리막길에서 본 것입니다. 올라가고 있는 동안 깨닫지 못했던 것을 내려가는 길에 깨달은 것입니다. 환대는 시선이 머무는 것입니다. 시선과 함께 새로운 각성을 경험하는 것입니다. 환대는 마주침입니다. 마주침을 통해 환대가 시작됩니다. 모든 만물은 환대받을 때 빛을 발합니다. 자신 안에 있는 아름다움을 드러냅니다. 무한한 잠재력을 드러냅니다. 환대받을 때 이전에 발견하지 못했던 자기 존재의 의미를 발견하게 됩니다. 환대를 통해 치유를 경험하게 됩니다. 거절의 상처는 환대를 통해 치유됩니다.

예수님이 오셔서 하신 일은 소외된 자, 병든 자, 귀신 들린 자, 잃어버린 자, 버림받은 자, 작은 자, 어린아이, 죄인을 환대하신 것입니다. 예수님은 그들을 환대하셨습니다. 예수님의 환대를 받은 사람들은 고침을 받았습니다. 새사람이 되었습니다. 하나님의 자녀가 되었습니다. 천국 백성이 되었습니다. 환대의 열매는 풍성합니다. 교회는 환대하는 곳입니다. 새로운 분들이 왔을 때 환대해야 합니다. 교회에서 환대의 경험을 하신 분들은 나중에 다른 교회로 이전할 때 건강한 성도로 이전하게 됩니다. 교회에서 상처받은 경험을 한 분들은 다른 교회에 가서도 상처받을까 두려워 몸을 움츠리게 됩니다.

환대는 복을 받는 은총의 수단입니다. 아브라함이 천사를 환대함으로 복을 받았습니다. 사르밧 과부가 엘리야를 환대함으로 복을 받았습니다. 수넴 여인이 엘리사를 환대함으로 복을 받았습니다. 예수님이 이 땅에 오셨을 때 예수님을 영접하고, 예수님을 환대한 사람은 복을 받았습니다. “영접하는 자 곧 그 이름을 믿는 자들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨으니”(요 1:12). 성령님이 임하셨을 때 성령님을 환대한 사람들은 복을 받았습니다.

환대가 소중하지만 우리 인생에는 환대만 있는 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 거절을 싫어하지만 때로는 거절이 더 놀라운 환대로 들어가는 문이 될 수 있습니다. 그런 까닭에 거절 때문에 너무 아파하지 않는 것도 지혜입니다. 요셉은 그의 형제들에게 거절을 당했지만 하나님은 그를 환대했습니다. 애굽의 바로 왕은 그를 환대했습니다. 뼈아픈 거절이 복된 환대를 낳은 것입니다. 인생의 역설입니다. 더 놀라운 비밀은 십자가에 있습니다. 예수님은 십자가에서 거절을 당하셨습니다. 버림 받으셨습니다. 배신당하셨습니다. 그런데 주님의 거절 당하심 때문에 죄인된 우리가 하나님의 환대를 받게 되었습니다. 원수된 사람들이 서로를 용서하고 환대하게 되었습니다. 화목하게 되었습니다. 환대의 지혜를 통해 더욱 풍성한 삶을 사시길 빕니다.

Wisdom Hidden in Hospitality

It's a miracle that I'm writing every week. I experience miracles every day. That's why I live in anticipation of a miracle every day. Once I finish writing, I think about the following writing. I am always awake, searching for writing inspiration. The term "글감" refers to the materials or subjects that become the content of a piece of writing. It's like how skilled cooks always seek out quality ingredients. Today, the topic I encountered in the early morning is "hospitality." Hospitality hides a surprising secret. Hospitality is wisdom. Hospitality is an art of life that must be learned and mastered. Many things in our lives are related to hospitality.

The Naver dictionary defines hospitality as "sincerity, welcoming, and treating to the fullest." Hospitality is to welcome. It is to receive with joy. It is to accept warmly. We have experience receiving hospitality. I have also experienced rejection. The experience of receiving hospitality enriches our lives. On the other hand, the wounds of rejection make our lives difficult.

We want hospitality rather than rejection. I am also happy when I am welcomed. How does hospitality begin? Hospitality begins with eye contact. Hospitality is an encounter. Not everything we see enters our eyes. To see is not always seeing. To show doesn't always mean we can see. Seeing the same thing, some people marvel at it, while others are insensitive. In that way, hospitality is also an event of grace. It is grace to be welcomed and to give hospitality.

When I left the church I served previously, I went downhill. A poem I read then resonated with me. It's a poem by Eun Koh, included in Flower of the Moment.

I saw on my way down,

that which I passed during my journey up

The flowers seen while going down are the same flowers unnoticed while going up. I noticed the flowers on my way down but couldn't see them in the middle of the climb. What I didn't realize while going up, I realized on the way down. Hospitality is to keep an eye on. It is to experience a new awakening with the gaze. Hospitality is an encounter. Hospitality begins through encounters. All creation shines when it is welcomed. Reveal the beauty within yourself. Unleash your limitless potential. When you are welcomed, you will discover the meaning of your existence that you have not discovered before. You will experience healing through hospitality. The wounds of rejection are healed through hospitality.

What Jesus came to do was to welcome the outcast, the sick, the demon-possessed, the lost, the outcast, the children, and the sinners. Jesus welcomed them. Those who received Jesus' hospitality were healed. They became a new person. They became a child of God. They became a citizen of heaven. The fruits of hospitality are abundant. Church is a place of hospitality. We should be welcoming when new people arrive. Those who have experienced hospitality in the church will later become healthy saints when they move to another church. Those who have experienced hurt in church shrink their bodies for fear of being hurt even if they go to another church.

Hospitality is a means of blessed grace. Abraham was blessed by welcoming an angel. The widow of Zarephath was blessed by welcoming Elijah. The woman of Shunem was blessed by welcoming Elisha. When Jesus came to this earth, those who received Him and welcomed Him were blessed. "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12). When the Holy Spirit came, those who welcomed the Holy Spirit were blessed.

Hospitality is precious, but hospitality is not the only thing in our lives. We hate rejection, but sometimes rejection can be the door to more amazing hospitality. That is why it is wise not to be too hurt by rejection. Joseph was rejected by his brothers, but God welcomed him. Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, welcomed him. A painful refusal resulted in blessed hospitality. It's a paradox of life. A more amazing secret is on the cross. Jesus was rejected on the cross. He was abandoned. He was betrayed. However, because of the Lord's rejection, we, as sinners, received God's hospitality. Those who were once enemies came to forgive and welcome each other. They became reconciled. I hope you live an abundant life through the wisdom of hospitality.
