하나님은 조용한 혁명을 일으키시는 분입니다. 혁명(革命)이란 단어는 무거운 단어입니다. 혁명이란 급진적인 변화를 의미합니다. 혁명이란 왕이 바뀌는 것입니다. 통치자가 바뀌는 것입니다. 실로 엄청난 사건입니다. 혁명이란 단어를 두려워하는 까닭은 혁명과 함께 수많은 사람이 죽을 수 있기 때문입니다. 또는 감옥에 들어갈 수 있기 때문입니다. 유혈 혁명은 결코 조용히 일어날 수 없습니다. 온 백성을 두렵게 만듭니다. 혁명이란 단어 대신에 전복이란 단어를 쓰기도 합니다. 전복(顚覆)이란 뒤집는 것이며 뒤집히는 것입니다. 그 뜻은 밑에서부터 뒤엎는 것입니다. 전복이란 단어도 질서 붕괴나 전환을 의미합니다.

예수님의 어머니 마리아가 엘리사벳을 만났을 때 주님을 찬양합니다. 그 찬양 속에 전복의 스토리가 담겨 있습니다. “능하신 이가 큰 일을 내게 행하셨으니 그 이름이 거룩하시며 긍휼하심이 두려워하는 자에게 대대로 이르는도다 그의 팔로 힘을 보이사 마음의 생각이 교만한 자들을 흩으셨고 권세 있는 자를 그 위에서 내리치셨으며 비천한 자를 높이셨고 주리는 자를 좋은 것으로 배불리셨으며 부자는 빈 손으로 보내셨도다”(눅 1:49-53). 마리아가 드린 찬양 속에 조용한 혁명이 담겨 있습니다.

조용한 혁명은 예수님이 오심으로 시작되었습니다. 예수님은 왕이십니다. 우리가 생각할 때 왕에 대한 이미지는 백성을 통치하고 다스리고 세도를 부리는 이미지입니다. 하지만 예수님은 섬기러 오셨습니다. “인자가 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라”(막 10:45). 섬기러 오신 예수님의 삶과 가르침 자체가 혁명적이었습니다. “너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고 너희 중에 누구든지 으뜸이 되고자 하는 자는 너희의 종이 되어야 하리라”(마 20:26하-27).

고난에 대한 예수님의 생각이 혁명적입니다. 그 당시 사람들은 고난을 저주로 생각했습니다. 장애를 갖고 태어난 사람은 부모나 자신이 죄를 지었다고 생각했습니다. 하지만 예수님의 생각은 달랐습니다. 고난과 장애는 하나님의 영광을 드러내는 길이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님이 하시는 일을 나타내는 은총의 도구라고 말씀하셨습니다. “이 사람이 맹인으로 난 것이 누구의 죄로 인함이니이까 자기니이까 그의 부모니이까 예수께서 대답하시되 이 사람이나 그 부모의 죄로 인한 것이 아니라 그에게서 하나님이 하시는 일을 나타내고자 하심이라”(요 9:2-3).

예수님은 십자가의 고난을 영광으로 여기셨습니다. 십자가를 지시기 위해 예루살렘에 입성하셨을 때, 헬라 사람들이 예수님을 찾아 왔습니다. 예수님은 그들에게 십자가가 영광이라고 말씀하십니다. “인자가 영광을 얻을 때가 왔도다 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라”(요 12:23하-24). 예수님은 십자가의 고난을 통해 영광을 받으십니다. 예수님은 고통을 피하신 것이 아니라 고통을 껴안으셨습니다. 예수님은 죽음을 피하신 것이 아니라 죽음을 뚫고 부활하셨습니다.

전복은 무너뜨림입니다. 예수님은 죄와 사망과 마귀의 권세를 무너뜨리셨습니다. 교만을 무너뜨리셨습니다. 부활은 다시 세우는 것입니다. 죄인을 새로운 피조물로 세우는 것입니다. 새로운 공동체인 교회를 세우는 것입니다. 하나님의 나라를 세우는 것입니다. 하나님의 나라는 존중의 나라입니다. 하나님의 나라는 사랑의 나라입니다. 하나님의 나라는 화평의 나라입니다. 화목의 나라입니다.

예수님은 스스로 낮아지셨습니다. 죽기까지 복종하셨습니다. 자신을 전복시키신 것입니다. 또한 부활을 통해 하나님의 질서를 회복시키셨습니다. 진정한 혁명은 칼과 총이 아닌 십자가의 사랑으로 완성됩니다. 부활의 아침은 고요했습니다. 예수님은 무덤을 찾아온 여인들을 만나셨습니다. 막달라 마리아를 부활의 증인으로 세우셨습니다. 예수님의 십자가와 부활을 통해 유대인과 헬라인이 하나가 되었습니다. 종과 자유인이 하나가 되었습니다. 남자와 여자가 하나가 되었습니다(갈 3:28). 이전의 계급과 차별이 사라졌습니다. 예수님 안에서 우리는 하나님의 자녀입니다. 하나님의 나라를 유업으로 받은 상속자입니다. 왕같은 제사장입니다. 예수님의 신부입니다.

예수님과 함께 시작된 조용한 혁명은 내면에서 시작됩니다. 진정한 혁명은 우리 안에 있는 교만을 전복하고 사랑과 겸손과 순종과 존중의 새 질서를 세우는 것입니다. 세상의 혁명은 폭력을 동반하지만 부활의 혁명은 평강으로 시작됩니다. 부활의 혁명은 폭력이 아니라 온유입니다. 부활의 혁명은 복수가 아니라 용서입니다. 부활의 능력은 지금 우리 안에 살아 역사합니다. 부활의 능력이 우리 안에 약동하고 있습니다(엡 1:20). 부활의 능력 안에 산다는 것은 죽음이 마지막이 아님을 믿고 사는 것입니다. 십자가는 끝이 아닙니다. 부활로 들어가는 문입니다. 십자가는 절망이 아닙니다. 희망으로 들어가는 길입니다. 우리 함께 부활하신 주님을 찬양합시다. 우리 함께 힘껏 외칩시다. 예수님이 부활하셨습니다!

The Power of the Resurrection That Brings a Quiet Revolution

  God is the One who brings about quiet revolutions. The word “revolution” is a weighty one. A revolution signifies radical change. A revolution is the replacement of a king. It is the overthrow of a ruler. It is a truly momentous event. The reason we fear the word “revolution” is because many people may die as a result—or end up in prison. A bloody revolution can never happen quietly. It fills an entire nation with fear. Sometimes the word “overthrow” is used instead. Overthrow means to turn something over, to be overturned. It means being upended from the bottom. It also implies a collapse or transformation of the current order.

When Mary, the mother of Jesus, met Elizabeth, she praised the Lord. In her praise is the story of an overthrow. “For the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty” (Luke 1:49–53). Within Mary’s praise is contained a quiet revolution.

The quiet revolution began with the coming of Jesus. Jesus is King. When we think of a king, we usually picture someone who rules over people, exercises authority, and wields power. But Jesus came to serve. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Jesus’ life and teachings, as one who came to serve, were revolutionary. “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave” (Matthew 20:26b–27).

Jesus’ view of suffering was revolutionary. In His time, people saw suffering as a curse. Someone born with a disability was thought to be suffering because of their own sin or their parents’ sin. But Jesus had a different perspective. He said that suffering and disability were ways to reveal God’s glory. They were instruments of grace through which God’s work would be displayed. “‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned,’ said Jesus, ‘but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life’” (John 9:2–3).

Jesus considered the suffering of the cross to be glory. When He entered Jerusalem to take up the cross, some Greeks came to see Him. Jesus told them that the cross was His glory. “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds” (John 12:23b–24). Jesus received glory through the suffering of the cross. He did not avoid pain—He embraced it. He did not escape death—He broke through it by rising again.

Overthrow is about tearing down. Jesus overthrew the powers of sin, death, and the devil. He overthrew pride. Resurrection is about rebuilding. It is about making sinners into new creations. It is about establishing the church as a new community. It is about building the Kingdom of God. God’s Kingdom is a kingdom of honor. God’s Kingdom is a kingdom of love. God’s Kingdom is a kingdom of peace and reconciliation.

Jesus humbled Himself. He obeyed to the point of death. He overthrew Himself. And through His resurrection, He restored God’s order. True revolution is not accomplished with swords and guns but through the love of the cross. The morning of the resurrection was quiet. Jesus met the women who came to the tomb. He appointed Mary Magdalene as a witness of His resurrection. Through the cross and resurrection of Jesus, Jews and Greeks became one. Slaves and free became one. Male and female became one (Galatians 3:28). Former class divisions and discrimination disappeared. In Jesus, we are children of God. We are heirs of the Kingdom. We are royal priests. We are the bride of Christ.

The quiet revolution that began with Jesus starts within us. True revolution overthrows the pride within and establishes a new order of love, humility, obedience, and honor. Revolutions of the world are accompanied by violence, but the revolution of the resurrection begins with peace. The revolution of the resurrection is not vengeance but gentleness. It is not revenge but forgiveness. The power of the resurrection is alive and at work within us now. That power is at work within us (Ephesians 1:20). To live in the power of the resurrection is to believe that death is not the end. The cross is not the end—it is the doorway into resurrection. The cross is not despair—it is the path into hope. Let us praise the risen Lord together. Let us shout with all our hearts: Jesus is risen!
