닻을 내리고 잠시 쉬는 시간을 갖도록 하십시오!

배를 타고 항해할 때 돛(sail)과 닻(anchor)이 함께 필요합니다. 돛은 돛대에 달아, 바람의 힘을 이용해 배가 앞으로 나갈 수 있도록 도와주는 천을 의미합니다. 국어사전에 “돛이란 배 바닥에 세운 기둥에 매어 펴 올리고 내리고 할 수 있도록 만든 넓은 천. 바람을 받아 배를 가게 한다.”라고 나와 있습니다. 오늘날의 선박들은 거의 엔진 동력으로 움직입니다. 하지만 옛날 배는 돛이 엔진 동력의 역할을 해 주었습니다. 돛은 바람의 힘을 빌어 배를 움직이는 추진 장치입니다.

돛의 영어 단어는 “sail”입니다. 이 뜻은 돛뿐만 아니라 항해나, 출항을 의미합니다. 돛은 바람을 이용해 속도를 낼 수 있도록 도와줍니다. 돛은 배의 항로를 예측하도록 도와줍니다. 돛은 미래지향적인 도구로 전진과 발전을 의미합니다. 반면에 닻은 정박하는 데 사용하는 도구입니다. 사전에 보면 “닻이란 배를 한 곳에 머물게 하기 위해 줄을 매어 물 밑바닥에 가라앉히는 갈고리가 달린 제구다. 철이나 강철로 만들며, 배를 묶어 잇는 닻줄이라는 로프나 쇠사슬의 끝에 달려 있다.”라고 나와 있습니다. 닻은 정박하는 데 사용됩니다. 닻은 급속도로 달리는 배의 브레이크용으로 사용되기도 합니다. 또한 큰 파도가 일어날 때, 이 닻이 깊은 바다 밑에 박혀 있어야 배가 밀리지 않고 파선을 면할 수 있습니다.

닻이 제공해 주는 것이 배의 무게입니다. 무게는 균형을 잡아주는 역할을 합니다. 무게가 없으면 배가 속도를 아주 빨리 낼 수 있지만, 다른 한편으로 균형 감각을 상실하게 됩니다. 닻이 없으면 배를 멈출 수가 없습니다. 닻이 없으면 항구에 다가왔을 때 속도를 조절할 수 없어 배가 많이 부서지게 됩니다. 돛만 있고 닻이 없는 배는 정말 위험합니다. 안전한 항해를 위해서는 돛과 닻이 모두 필요합니다.

돛과 닻은 인생 항해의 적절한 비유입니다. 어떤 사람은 돛만 가지고 삽니다. 늘 전진입니다. 늘 속도만 강조합니다. “빨리 빨리”가 입에 붙어 있습니다. 어떤 사람은 닻만 가지고 삽니다. 같은 자리에 무거운 닻을 내리고 멈춰, 앞으로 나아가지 못합니다. 우리는 돛과 닻을 적절하게 사용할 줄 알아야 합니다.

인생 항해에서 ‘닻’은 잠시 멈춤의 시간을 의미합니다. 잠시 안식하는 시간을 뜻합니다. 우리는 먼 길을 떠나기 전에 항구에 잠시 정박해서 쉼의 시간을 가져야 합니다. 먼 길을 떠나는데 필요한 것들을 준비하는 시간을 가져야 합니다. 가장 위험한 사람은 쉬지 않고 일하는 사람입니다. 브레이크가 없는 차처럼 일하는 사람입니다. 인간은 기계가 아닙니다. 기계도 잠시 멈추어 기름을 쳐 주어야 하고 정비하는 시간을 가져야 한다면 인간은 말할 것도 없습니다.

잠시 멈춤의 시간을 갖는 것은 결코 낭비가 아닙니다. 잠시 멈추어 닻을 내리고, 지나간 날의 항해를 돌아보고 미래를 조망(眺望)하는 시간을 가질 줄 아는 사람은 지혜로운 사람입니다. 돛은 목적지를 향해 나아가도록 돕습니다. 돛이 인도해준 목적지에 도착했을 때 그 목적지에 정박할 수 있도록 도와주는 것이 닻입니다.

중요한 것은 돛과 닻의 아름다운 협력과 조화에 있습니다. 지금처럼 속도를 강조하는 시대에 속도를 무시할 수 없습니다. 그런 면에서 돛의 역할은 중요합니다. 하지만 속도가 주는 위험성을 결코 간과할 수 없습니다. 가속(加速)은 무서운 것입니다. 가속이 붙으면 멈출 수가 없고 돌이킬 수가 없습니다. 가속의 결과는 사고입니다. 그런 면에서 닻의 역할은 속도를 조절해 주고, 필요할 때는 잠시 멈추도록 도와줍니다.

성경은 우리 영혼의 닻이 필요하다고 말씀합니다. “우리가 이 소망을 가지고 있는 것은 영혼의 닻 같아서 튼튼하고 견고하여 휘장 안에 들어가나니”(히 6:19). 우리 소망이 영혼의 닻입니다. 튼튼하고 견고한 영혼의 닻입니다. 인간은 소망하는 존재입니다. 소망이 있는 한 견고하게 살아갑니다. 하지만 세상 소망은 결코 영혼의 닻이 될 수 없습니다. 세상 소망을 붙잡게 되면 작은 풍파에도 흔들리게 됩니다. 오직 우리의 소망은 오직 예수 그리스도입니다. 예수님은 영광의 소망이십니다(골 1:27). 예수님을 소망으로 삼은 사람은 흔들리지 않습니다. 예수님은 흔들리지 않는 우리 영혼의 닻입니다. 영원한 반석이십니다. 예수님을 영혼의 닻으로 삼은 사람은 어떤 환난과 역경이 찾아와도 흔들리지 않습니다. 예수님은 죽음을 이기시고 부활하신 주님이십니다. 예수님의 나라는 흔들리지 않는 나라입니다(히 12:28).

예수님이 우리 영혼의 닻이라면 성령님은 우리 영혼의 돛처럼 역사하십니다. 필요할 때면 돛을 올리십시오. 성령님의 바람을 통해 앞으로 전진하십시오. 또한 정기적으로 닻을 내리십시오. 예수님께 깊이 닻을 내리고 쉼의 시간을 갖도록 하십시오. 하나님이 성도님들의 인생 항해에 돛과 닻을 적절하게 사용할 수 있는 지혜를 주시길 빕니다.

Drop your Anchor and Take Time For Rest!

When we go on a ship for a voyage, we need both the sail and the anchor. The sail is a large cloth hung on the mast and it helps the ship move forward as it uses the wind’s power. In the Korean dictionary it says, “Sail is an extent of fabric, which can be folded up and down on a pillar on the bottom of a ship, by means of which wind is used to propel a ship through water.” Today’s ships mostly move by the power of the engine. But in the past, sails were the power of the engine. A sail is a propulsion device that moves the ship by the power of the wind.

The word “sail” also means to go on voyage or to take off. Sail helps the ship speed up with the wind. Sails also help predict the course of the ship. The sail is a future-oriented tool that means advancement and development. On the other hand, an anchor is a tool used to anchor the ship. In the dictionary, "An anchor is a device with a hook that is tied onto a string that is dropped into the bottom of the water to make the ship stay in one place. It is made of iron or steel, and it rests at the end of a rope or chain, called an anchor cable that ties up the ship." Anchors are often used to give breaks to the fast running ship. Also, when a large wave occurs, this anchor must be dug into the bottom of the deep sea so that the ship would not be pushed and wrecked by the large waves.

What the anchor sustains is the weight of the ship. Weight balances the ship. Without weight, the ship can speed up very quickly, but on the other hand it will lose balance. Without an anchor, we cannot stop the ship. Without an anchor, we cannot control the speed when the ship comes to the harbor, and it will crash. Ships with only sails and no anchor are very dangerous. Both sails and anchors are necessary for safe voyage.

Sails and anchors are appropriate metaphors for our life voyage. Some people live with only sails. They are always advancing and they are always emphasizing on speed. The word “quickly, quickly!” is always on their lips. In contrast, some people live with only anchors. They cannot move forward because they are stuck in the same spot because they drop their heavy anchor. We need to know how to properly use both our sails and anchor.

In our life voyage, “anchor” represents a pause in life. It represents our time to rest for a moment. We must have a moment of rest - anchoring in the harbor before leaving for a long journey. We must take time to prepare the things we need for the long journey. The most dangerous person is the one who works without breaks. This person is working like a car without brakes. Humans are not machines. If the machine must stop for a while to be lubricated and maintained, it needs no saying that humans must rest, as well.

Taking a pause is not a waste at all. He who drops his anchor to look back on the past voyage and to take a look into the future is a wise person. The sails help you reach your destination. When you arrive at the destination that the sail guides to, it is the anchor that helps dock the ship at that destination.

The important thing is the beautiful cooperation and harmony of sails and anchors. We cannot ignore the speed, especially in present times when we emphasize speed. In that sense, the role of sails is important. However, we cannot overlook the danger of speed. Acceleration is dangerous. When accelerated, we cannot stop nor return. The resulting consequence of acceleration can be an accident. In that sense, the role of anchors is to control the speed, and to pause when necessary.

The bible says that we need an anchor for our souls. “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain (Heb 6:19).” Our hope is the anchor for the soul. It is a firm and a secure anchor for the soul. Humans are all hopeful beings. We can live securely as long as we have hope. But the hope of the world can never be the anchor for the soul. You will be swayed by the small winds of life if you hold on to the hope of the world. Our only hope is Jesus Christ. Jesus is the hope of glory (Col 1:27). He who makes Jesus his hope will never be shaken. Jesus is the unshaken anchor for our souls. He is the eternal Rock. He who makes Jesus as his anchor for the soul is not swayed by any trouble or adversity. Jesus is the Lord who conquered death and was risen. The kingdom of Jesus cannot be shaken (Heb 12:28).

If Jesus is the anchor for our souls, the Holy Spirit works as the sail for our souls. Raise the sail when you need it. Move forward through the wind of the Holy Spirit. Additionally, drop your anchor regularly. Drop the anchor deeply into Jesus and have time to rest. May God give you the wisdom to properly use both sails and anchors for your life voyage.
