통찰력(洞察力)을 키우는 지혜

인생의 문제는 시각의 문제입니다. 무엇을 보며, 누구를 보며, 어떻게 보느냐에 따라 인생은 달라집니다. 두 사람이 감옥에서 함께 살았습니다. 한 사람은 창문 너머로 진흙땅을 바라보며 원망하며 살았습니다. 그 사람은 감옥에서 나온 후에 정신병동으로 갔다고 합니다. 다른 한 사람은 창문 너머로 하늘을 바라보며 시를 썼습니다. 밤에 별과 달을 보며 시를 썼습니다. 그 사람은 감옥에서 나온 후에 시집을 들고 출판사로 갔다고 합니다. 누군가 만들어 낸 이야기일 수 있지만 시각이 얼마나 중요한가를 보여주는 이야기임에는 틀림이 없습니다.

어떤 분은 감옥과 수도원의 차이는 감사에 있다고 말했습니다. 감옥에 있는 분들이 원망과 남을 탓하며 살아가는 동안, 수도원에 사는 수사들은 감사하며 살아갑니다. 감옥이나 수도원이나 갇혀 있는 것은 일반입니다. 하지만 수도원에 사는 수사들은 늘 하나님을 바라보며 감사하며 살아갑니다. 날마다 수많은 영혼들을 끌어안고 중보기도를 드리며 살아갑니다. 중요한 것은 시각에 있으며 마음의 태도에 있습니다.

본다고 다 보는 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 관심을 가진 것만큼 봅니다. 또한 아는 것만큼 봅니다. 경험하는 것만큼 봅니다. 미국에 와서 “토우러스”(Taurus)라는 중고차를 산 적이 있습니다. “Taurus”라는 차를 사기전까지는 그런 차가 있는지 조차 몰랐습니다. 그 날, 중고차를 사서 운전하고 집에 돌아가는 길에 “Taurus”라는 차가 수없이 눈에 띠었습니다. 그렇게 “Taurus”라는 차가 많은 줄 몰랐습니다. 여인이 결혼해서 아이를 갖기 전까지는 어린 아이 용품이 눈에 들어오지 않습니다. 텔레비전, 신문, 그리고 잡지에 나오는 어린 아이들의 기저귀 광고가 눈에 잘 들어오지 않습니다. 하지만 아이를 잉태하는 순간 기저귀 광고가 눈에 들어오기 시작합니다. 어린 아이들을 위한 옷과 어린 아이 용품들이 눈에 들어오게 됩니다. 새로운 관심이 생긴 까닭입니다.

누구나 보지만 잘 본다는 것, 깊이 본다는 것, 그리고 전체를 본다는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 특별히 남이 잘 보지 못하는 것을 본다는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 통찰력이란 남이 잘 보지 못하는 것을 보는 것을 의미합니다. 통찰(洞察)이란 단어는 “뿌리부터 본다”라는 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 문제에 직면할 때 문제만 보는 것이 아니라 문제의 원인을 살피는 것을 의미합니다. 통찰력이란 깊이 보는 것을 의미합니다. 근원을 살피는 것을 의미합니다.

통찰력을 키우기 위해서는 주의 깊게 관찰하는 훈련을 해야 합니다. 깊이 보고, 전체를 보는 안목을 키워야 합니다. 사업을 잘하는 사람은 남들보다 조금 더 잘 본 것이 있습니다. 다른 사람이 본 것만큼만 본다면 사업을 잘하기 어렵습니다. 보는 힘이 깊어질 때 통찰력이 깊어집니다. 통찰력을 얻기 위해서는 조금 떨어져서 바라보는 훈련을 해야 합니다. 숲을 보기 위해서는 숲 밖으로 나와야 합니다. 숲을 보면서 한 발자국 물러서는 지혜가 필요합니다. 사업 실패란 당장의 이익에 너무 집착하다가 큰 것을 잃어보는 중에 경험하는 것입니다. 전체를 보면 당장의 이익에 집착하지 않고 초연하게 사업에 임할 수 있습니다.

조금 떨어져서 보면 전체가 보입니다. 또한 시대적인 흐름을 읽게 됩니다. 시대적인 흐름을 읽을 때 변화를 감지하게 되고, 변화를 시도하게 됩니다. 변화해야 할 때는 변화해야 살아남습니다. 피터 드러커는 “10분 후와 10년 후를 동시에 보는 통찰력을 길러야 한다.”고 말했습니다. 세상은 멀리 보는 사람들에 의해 만들어져 갑니다.

통찰력이 중요한 까닭은 통찰력을 통해 소통을 잘할 수 있기 때문입니다. 통찰이란 사물이나 현상만 보는 것을 의미하지 않습니다. 통찰이란 사람들의 마음을 보고 이해하는 것입니다. 사람들의 마음을 이해할 때 공감력(共感力)이 탁월해집니다. 공감할 때 소통이 가능해지고, 소통이 잘 될 때 유쾌해집니다. “아픈 것은 통(通)하지 않기 때문이요, 아프지 않은 것은 통(通)하기 때문이다.” 동의보감에 나오는 말입니다. 소통을 잘하기 위해서는 관찰을 잘해야 하고, 경청을 잘해야 합니다. 보는 것과 듣는 것은 함께 동행하는 친구입니다. 보는 것과 듣는 것은 열림을 의미합니다. 열림이 있어야 보게 됩니다. 또한 열림이 있어야 듣게 됩니다.

가장 탁월한 통찰은 성령님의 빛이 임할 때 가능합니다. 그런 까닭에 우리는 성령님의 도우심을 받기 위해 기도해야 합니다. 우리가 기도할 때 하나님은 성령님을 통해 빛을 비추어 주십니다. 그때 우리는 눈이 열려 탁월한 통찰력을 얻게 됩니다. 하나님이 사랑하는 성도님들에게 통찰의 은혜를 베풀어 주시길 빕니다.

Wisdom to Foster Insight

The problem of life is the problem of perspective. Life depends on what, whom, and how you see. Two people have lived in a prison. One man lived in resentment as he looked upon the muddy ground through the window. The person went to a psychiatric hospital after he got out of prison. The other person wrote poetry as he looked towards the sky through the window. And at night he wrote poetry while looking at the starts and the moon. After he got out of prison, he went to a publisher with his collection of poetry. This story might be a made-up story by someone, but it clearly shows how important perspective is.

Some said that the difference between prisons and the monasteries is in thanksgiving. While prisoners are living with blame and resentment, the monks live with thanksgiving. It is the same confinement in both prisons and monasteries. However, the monks live in thanksgiving while looking upon God. Every day they live embracing many souls and interceding for them. The important thing is perspective and the attitude of the mind.

Just because you see something doesn’t mean that you can see everything. We see as much as we care. We also see as much as we know. We see as much as we experience. I bought a used car called “Taurus” when I came to America. Before I bought that car, I didn’t even know there was such a car. But on the day of purchase, I could see many “Taurus” on the way home. I didn’t know that there were so many cars called “Taurus.” Until the woman is married and has children, goods used for children are not visible to her. The diapers on television, newspapers, and magazines are not noticeable. But as soon as she conceives a child, diaper ads will start to catch her eyes. Clothes and supplies for children come into sight. That is because she has new interests.

Anyone can see, but it is not so easy to see well, deeply, and holistically. Especially, it is not easy to see what others can’t. Insight means seeing what others can’t. The word insight has the meaning of "seeing from the root." It means not looking at just the problem but the cause of the problem when facing problems. Insight means to look deeply. It means to look at the source.

In order to foster insight, you need to discipline yourself to observe carefully. You need to foster a discerning eye to look at the depth and the whole. Those who are good at business can see better than others. If you see only what others have seen, it is difficult to do business well. When the capacity of seeing gets deeper, your insights becomes deep. In order to gain insight, you must discipline yourself to look from a little way off. To see the forest, you have to come out of the forest. You need wisdom to step away from the forest while seeing it. A business failure is what you experience when you are too preoccupied with immediate profit. When you look at the whole, you can do business remaining aloof from being preoccupied with immediate profit.

You can see the whole when you are a little way off. Also you can understand the generational flow of our time. When you look and understand the generational flow of time, you will perceive the change and try the change. In the times of change, you must be changed to survive. Peter Drucker says, "We must develop insights to see 10 minutes and 10 years later at the same time.” The world is made by people who can see far.

Insight is important because it allows you to communicate well through it. Insight doesn’t mean seeing only things or phenomena. Insight is seeing and understanding people's minds. When we understand people's minds, we can excel in empathy. When we feel empathy, communication becomes possible, and when communication is smooth, then it becomes pleasant. "We are sick because we don’t understand each other, we are not sick because we understand each other,” says in Donguibogam. Good communication requires good observation and good listening. Looking and listening are friends that accompany together. Looking and listening means opening. Opening will lead you to see. Also opening will lead you to listen.

The best insights are possible when the light of the Holy Spirit comes on. That is why we must pray for the Holy Spirit’s help. When we pray, God gives light through the Holy Spirit. Then our eyes will open, and we will gain excellent insight. May the grace of insight be granted to the beloved saints.
