새벽 통트기 전이 가장 어둡습니다!

비전 센터 건축을 시작한 후, 저는 호랑이 등에 올라탄 느낌입니다. 사납고 거친 호랑이 등에 타는 것은 결코 즐거운 일이 아닙니다. 아주 위험한 일입니다.호랑이 등에 올라타면 호랑이가 멈추기 전에는 내려 올 수 없습니다. 호랑이가 달리고 있는 데 무리해서 내려오게 되면 큰 어려움을 겪게 됩니다. 건축이란 호랑이 등에 올라타는 것과 같습니다.일단 시작하면 멈추기가 어렵습니다. 계속해서 달려가야 합니다. 그동안 비전 센터 건축 과정에서 수많은 고비들이 있었습니다. 수많은 장애물을 만났습니다.

반갑지 않은 손님처럼 장애물이 찾아올 때, 때로는 두려웠습니다. 때로는 좌절감을 느꼈습니다. 때로는 혼돈스러웠습니다. 때로는 무거운 짐에 억눌리기도 했습니다. 감당할 수 없는 염려가 찾아오기도 했습니다. 하지만 제 마음 깊은 곳에 조용한 확신이 있었습니다. 성전 건축은 하나님이 시작하도록 도와주신 일이며, 마침내 하나님이 이루실 것이라는 확신이 있었습니다.그 고요한 확신이 저를 붙잡아 주지 않았다면 여기까지 이를 수 없었습니다.

저는 장애물을 만날 때마다 제 자신을 추슬러야 했습니다.장애물은 멈추고 포기하라고 하나님이 주신 것이 아니라, 극복하라고 주신 것으로 믿었습니다.장애물에 직면할 때마다 장애물을 두려워하기보다 극복할 수 있는 지혜와 힘을 달라고 기도했습니다. 우리가 무슨 일을 하던지 장애물을 만나게 됩니다. 큰 일을 도모하면 큰 장애물을 만나게 됩니다.작은 일을 도모하게 되면 작은 장애물을 만나게 됩니다. 비전 센터를 건축하는 일은 큰일입니다. 그런 까닭에 큰 장애물을 만나는 경험을 한 것입니다. 랜디 포쉬는 장벽에 직면했을 때 우리가 기억해야 할 것을 가르쳐 줍니다.

“장벽에는 다 이유가 있다. 장벽은 우리가 무엇을 얼마나 절실하게 원하는지 깨달을 수 있도록 기회를 제공하는 것이다.”

오늘 아침 구약 에스라서를 읽는 중에 성전 건축이 결코 쉬운 일이 아님을 새삼 깨달았습니다. 에스라서를 읽어보면 포로 생활에서 돌아온 이스라엘 백성들이 성전을 재건하는 중에 여러번 큰 어려움에 직면하게 됩니다. 성전 재건을 방해하는 사람들 때문에 성전 건축이 잠시 중단되기도 합니다. 하지만 하나님의 도우심과 백성들의 지속적인 헌신을 통해 성전재건의 사명을 완수하게 됩니다. 성전건축은 결코 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 성도님들이 아시는 것처럼 성전 건축은 영적 전쟁을 치르는것과 같습니다. 또한 예상치 못했던 일들 때문에 여러 가지 자원이 고갈되는 경험을 하게 됩니다.

성전 건축이란 한 번도 가보지 않은 길을 가는 것과 같습니다.성전 건축을 하는 중에 어떤 일이 벌어질지는 아무도 예측할 수가 없습니다. 비전 센터 기공 예배를 드린 후에 건축위원회가 직면했던 첫 번째 문제는 땅을 청소하는 문제였습니다. 건축을 위해 땅을 파는 순간, 땅 밑에 쓰레기가 많은 것을 발견했습니다. 우리가 성전 건축을 위해 구입한 땅은 도자기 공장이 있었던 곳입니다. 1950년 무렵에 도자기 공장이 문을 닫으면서 땅 속에 도자기를 비롯한 여러 종류의 쓰레기를 넣어 둔 채 흙을 덮었던 것입니다. 우리가 땅을 청소하기 위해 버린 쓰레기만4,000트럭이 넘습니다. 우리는 쓰레기를 버리고 최상급의 흙을 가져다가 건축하는 땅에 채웠습니다. 그 과정에서 황무지 같았던 땅이 사람들이 살 수 있는 땅으로 변화되었습니다.

저는 요셉의 생애를 연구하는 중에 동트기 직전이 가장 어둡다는 진리를 오래 전에 깨달았습니다. 하나님이 요셉에게 큰 꿈을 주셨습니다. 그 꿈은 만민의 생명을 살리는 꿈이었습니다. 요셉은 그가 품은 꿈의 크기만큼 큰 문제와 큰 장애물을 만났습니다. 큰 고난과 격심한 고통을 통과했습니다. 요셉의 생애 중에 국무총리가 되기 직전이 가장 어두웠습니다. 그가 국무총리가 되기 직전에 그는 깊은 감옥에 갇혀 있었습니다. 깊은 감옥의 어두움이 얼마나 깊었는지 그의 꿈이 이루어질 것처럼 보이지 않았습니다.하지만 하나님은 그의 고난의 끝자락에서 놀라운 기적을 베풀어 주셨습니다. 벼랑 끝에서 비상하게 하셨습니다. 모든 것이 순식간에 반전되고 역전되는 은혜를 베풀어 주셨습니다. 하나님이 하시는 일은 이토록 드라마틱합니다. 우리는 비전 센터 완공의 끝자락에 와 있습니다.바로 이 끝자락에서 하나님의 큰 도우심이 함께 해 주시길 기도해 주십시오. 성도님들의 아름다운 헌신과 한결같은 사랑에 거듭 감사드립니다.

It’s the Darkest Right Before Dawn!

Since we started building the Vision Center, I have felt like I’m riding on a tiger. Riding on a wild, rough tiger is never fun. It is very dangerous. If you get on a tiger, you cannot come down until the tiger stops. When a tiger is running, it is very risky to try coming down by yourself. Construction is like riding on a tiger. Once started, it is difficult to stop. We must keep running. During construction, there have been lots of crisis situations in the process of building our Vision Center. We have faced numerous obstacles.

Sometimes I was afraid when obstacles came like unwelcomed guests. Sometimes I felt frustrated. Sometimes I was confused. Sometimes I was overwhelmed by heavy burdens. Even though there were worries that I couldn’t handle, I had quiet confidence in my deep inner heart. God helped us to start building His temple, and I had confidence that God will accomplish at last. I could have not come this far if that quiet confidence had not taken hold of me.

Every time I met an obstacle, I had to pull myself together. I believed that God gave us obstacle not to stop but to overcome. Whenever I faced obstacles, I prayed for wisdom and strength to overcome the obstacles rather than to fear them. No matter what we do, we face obstacles. If you plan to do big tasks, you will face big obstacles. When you do small tasks, you will face small obstacles. Building our Vision Center is a big task. That's why we have had the experience of facing big obstacles. Randy Pausch teaches us to remember the following when facing brick walls.

“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something.” Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

As I was reading Ezra in the Old Testament this morning, I realized again that building the temple was never easy. Reading the book of Ezra, the Israelites who came back from captivity faced many big difficulties as they rebuilt the temple. Building the temple was temporarily suspended due to the people interfering with the temple reconstruction. However, through the help of God and the continued dedication of the people, they completed the mission of rebuilding the temple. Building a temple is never an easy task. As you know, temple building is like a spiritual warfare. Also, unexpected things can lead to a depletion of resources.

Building a temple is like going down a road that we have never been before. No one can predict what will happen while building the temple. The first issue that the Building Committee faced afterground-breaking of the Vision Center was the problem of cleaning the land. When they dug the land for construction, they discovered that there was a lot of garbage beneath the ground. The land we bought for building the temple was where a ceramics factory was located. In 1950, the ceramics factory had closed and covered the ground with ceramics and other kinds of garbage. There were more than 4,000 trucks of trash that we dumped to clean the land. We dumped the garbage and took the best soil and filled it into the building ground. In the process, the wasteland has transformed into a land people could live on.

As I was studying the life of Joseph, I realized a long time ago that it is the darkest right before the break of dawn. God gave Joseph a big dream. The dream was to save the lives of his people. Joseph encountered big problems and obstacles that were as big as his dream. He endured through great hardships and intense pain. Joseph's life was the darkest before he became prime minister. Just before he became prime minister, he was in a deep prison. How deep the darkness of the deep prison was, his dream did not seem to be coming true. However, God performed a wonderful miracle at the end of his hardship. He made him soar at the edge of the cliff. Everything was instantly reversed and turn-around by grace. What God does is so dramatic. We are at the end of the completion of the Vision Center. Please pray for God's great help at this very end.
